Spacelab user implementation assessment study (software requirements analysis). Volume 1: Executive study

The primary objective of this study was to develop an integrated approach for the development, implementation, and utilization of all software that is required to efficiently and cost-effectively support advanced technology laboratory flight and ground operations. It was recognized that certain aspects of the operations would be mandatory computerized services; computerization of other aspects would be optional. Thus, the analyses encompassed not only alternate computer utilization and implementations but trade studies of the programmatic effects of non-computerized versus computerized approaches to the operations. A general overview of the study is presented.

The timing and sources of information for the adoption and implementation of production innovations

Two dimensions (personal-impersonal and internal-external) are used to characterize information sources as they become important during the interorganizational transfer of production innovations. The results of three studies are reviewed for the purpose of deriving a model of the timing and importance of different information sources and the utilization of new technology. Based on the findings of two retrospective studies, it was concluded that the pattern of information seeking behavior in user organizations during the awareness stage of adoption is not a reliable predictor of the eventual utilization rate. Using the additional findings of a real-time study, an empirical model of the relative importance of information sources for successful user organizations is presented. These results are extended and integrated into a theoretical model consisting of a time-profile of successful implementations and the relative importance of four types of information sources during seven stages of the adoption-implementation process.

Synthesis and implementation of state-trajectory control law for dc-to-dc converters

Mathematical representations of a state-plane switching boundary employed in a state-trajectory control law for dc-to-dc converters are derived. Two approaches to implementing the control law are discussed; one approach employs a digital processor and the other uses analog computational circuits. Performance characteristics of experimental voltage step-up dc-to-dc converters operating under the control of each of these implementations are presented.

Digital filter structures having low errors and simple hardware implementation

Sensitivity and roundoff errors can seriously limit the application of recursive digital filters in practice, particularly when the filters have poles near z = + 1. A filter structure, based on digital incremental computers is proposed, which has low sensitivity, good error characteristics, and simple hardware implementation for pole locations close to z = + 1. Expressions for the roundoff errors are derived and compared to those for conventional structures. A design procedure is suggested to implement the new filter structure given the transfer function. Simulation results are presented.

The digital implementation of control compensators: The coefficient wordlength issue

There exists a number of mathematical procedures for designing discrete-time compensators. However, the digital implementation of these designs, with a microprocessor for example, has not received nearly as thorough an investigation. The finite-precision nature of the digital hardware makes it necessary to choose an algorithm (computational structure) that will perform 'well-enough' with regard to the initial objectives of the design. This paper describes a procedure for estimating the required fixed-point coefficient wordlength for any given computational structure for the implementation of a single-input single-output LOG design. The results are compared to the actual number of bits necessary to achieve a specified performance index.

A digitally implemented communications experiment utilizing the communications technology satellite, Hermes

Developments which will reduce the costs associated with the distribution of satellite services are considered with emphasis on digital communication link implementation. A digitally implemented communications experiment (DICE) which demonstrates the flexibility and efficiency of digital transmission of television video and audio, telephone voice, and high-bit-rate data is described. The utilization of the DICE system in a full duplex teleconferencing mode is addressed. Demonstration teleconferencing results obtained during the conduct of two sessions of the 7th AIAA Communication Satellite Systems Conference are discussed. Finally, the results of link characterization tests conducted to determine (1) relationships between the Hermes channel 1 EIRP and DICE model performance and (2) channel spacing criteria for acceptable multichannel operation, are presented.

Development and implementation of Shuttle/IUS proximity operations flight design software

The High Fidelity Relative Motion Program (HFRMP), a trajectory/attitude numerical integration program, was developed and implemented on the MPAD HP-9825A desk top computer systems. A solar and a lunar ephemeris is included in the HFRMP along with models of the oblate Earth, a rotating atmosphere, the orbiter's OMS/RCS/DAP system, orbiter vents, rotor dynamics, and upper stage propulsion systems. Although designed primarily for the analysis of proximity operations, it is useful in other areas such as attitude/stability analysis, propulsive consumables estimation, and trajector perturbation studies. An unique identification was assigned to each of the various configurations of the HFRMP that were developed to test new techniques and algorithms are briefly described. These include the HFRMP Versions 03H, 03M, 03T, 03U, and 05D. Development of orbiter/upper stage separation techniques including flight design support for the TDRS-A and Galileo deployment flights and design of standard maneuver sequences is discussed. Also, the development and implementation of the Euler angle conversion program is briefly addressed.

Parallel processing implementations of a contextual classifier for multispectral remote sensing data

The applicability of parallel processing schemes to the implementation of a contextual classification algorithm which exploits the spatial and spectral context of a multispectral remote sensing pixel to achieve classification is examined. Two algorithms for classifying each multivariate pixel taking into account the probable classifications of neighboring pixels are presented which make use of a size three horizontally linear neighborhood, and the serial computational complexity of the more efficient algorithm is shown to grow in proportion to the number of pixels and the cube of the number of possible categories. The implementation of the more efficient algorithm on a CDC Flexible Processor system and on a multimicroprocessor system such as the proposed PASM is then discussed. It is noted that the use of N processors to perform the calculations N times faster than a single processor overcomes the principal disadvantage of contexual classifiers, i.e., their computational complexity.

Optical implementation of systolic array processing

Algorithms for matrix vector multiplication are implemented using acousto-optic cells for multiplication and input data transfer and using charge coupled devices detector arrays for accumulation and output of the results. No two dimensional matrix mask is required; matrix changes are implemented electronically. A system for multiplying a 50 component nonnegative real vector by a 50 by 50 nonnegative real matrix is described. Modifications for bipolar real and complex valued processing are possible, as are extensions to matrix-matrix multiplication and multiplication of a vector by multiple matrices.

A high speed implementation of the random decrement algorithm

The algorithm is useful for measuring net system damping levels in stochastic processes and for the development of equivalent linearized system response models. The algorithm works by summing together all subrecords which occur after predefined threshold level is crossed. The random decrement signature is normally developed by scanning stored data and adding subrecords together. The high speed implementation of the random decrement algorithm exploits the digital character of sampled data and uses fixed record lengths of 2(n) samples to greatly speed up the process. The contributions to the random decrement signature of each data point was calculated only once and in the same sequence as the data were taken. A hardware implementation of the algorithm using random logic is diagrammed and the process is shown to be limited only by the record size and the threshold crossing frequency of the sampled data. With a hardware cycle time of 200 ns and 1024 point signature, a threshold crossing frequency of 5000 Hertz can be processed and a stably averaged signature presented in real time.

Implementation of structural response sensitivity calculations in a large-scale finite-element analysis system

The implementation includes a generalized method for specifying element cross-sectional dimensions as design variables that can be used in analytically calculating derivatives of output quantities from static stress, vibration, and buckling analyses for both membrane and bending elements. Limited sample results for static displacements and stresses are presented to indicate the advantages of analytically calclating response derivatives compared to finite difference methods. Continuing developments to implement these procedures into an enhanced version of the system are also discussed.
