Dark Field Proton Radiography (Los Alamos LDRD Report)

Proton radiography at LANL (pRad) takes advantage of the high flux, high proton energy, and flexible timing structure of LANSCE's 800-MeV proton beam to visualize dense, dynamic systems under extreme strain. With recent needs identified for the development of the W93, the pRad team has been actively searching for ways to increase the facility's radiographic capabilities. Recently, we discovered that utilizing two magnetic lenses (one upstream and one downstream of the object), and specific combinations of collimator choices within the two lenses, that the signal-to-noise ratio was improved by more than a factor of two. However, we did not fully understand the mechanism, and found that results did not match forward modeling predictions. This work specifically sought to implement an engineering solution to solve this problem, through the development of an actuated collimator that reduced the time required to swap collimator settings from a typical 4-8 hours, to less than 30 seconds. This allowed, in combination with a unique multi-material, multi-resolution stepwedge, to acquire an unprecedently enormous dataset, with in total 24 collimation combinations, and multiple diffuser settings and pulse patterns, equivalent to almost a full run cycle's worth of data in a few days. This massive dataset is currently being harnessed to make a fully-predictive, ultra-fast Python-based model of the system, to dial in specific settings for any future experiments that fully optimize that radiographic sensitivity to the material of interest.

Innovative Pathways: Transforming Impact Investments to Working Capital For Early Stage Cleantech Companies: Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2020)

Project Objectives: The focus for the entirety of the last quarter was on the completion of the pilot loan funding within our portfolio, and the closing out of our DOE-CAP Grant: “Innovative Pathways: Transforming Impact Investments to Working Capital for Early Stage Cleantech Companies.” The fourteenth quarter (Q14) of the program performance was also dedicated toward two main activities: the continued fundraising efforts for a formalized LACI debt fund, as well as finalization of the lending processes for pilot underwriting amongst the LACI Team and with Mission Driven Finance. This quarter marked key successes around the workflows of the DOE-CAP grant, specifically around fund capitalization efforts. Activities during the thirteenth quarter included: 1. Finalization of the DOE-CAP grant activities and work-flows; 2. Due diligence, underwriting and issuance of one (1) loan in Q1 2021 and three (3) in Q4 2020 for technology providers in grant-funded zero emissions mobility & community pilots, in partnership with LACI and local organizations, totaling ten (10) total loans; 3. Development of fundraising and marketing materials, and distribution to 30+ possible funding sources over the course of Q13 & Q14; and 4. Reinvigoration of conversations with Mission Driven Finance, the prospective underwriting partner for key activities and governance documents, and finalization of all loan processing activities once the fund is capitalized

A particle accelerator is a scientific instrument that produces a directional stream of electrically charged particles, usually electrons or protons. The accelerator propels particles to high speeds, close to the speed of light. Historically, accelerators play a crucial role in scientific discovery. Nowadays, accelerators produce particle beams for biomedical and material research, manufacturing, energy technology, and Homeland security.

Early Intervention Program Los Alamos National Laboratory [Slides]

Objectives of the Program: Identify employees with symptoms/discomfort and provide early intervention/rapid response before discomfort becomes an injury; Demonstrate to employees that the Laboratory cares about them using a personalized approach; Improve worker productivity and workplace satisfaction; Spread the word so that employees report discomfort early and rapid intervention can be executed to prevent injuries; facilitate procurement of necessary equipment as quickly as possible given risk of progression to injury.
