Early immune response and regulation of IL-2 receptor subunits

Affymetrix oligonucleotide arrays were used to monitor expression of 8796 genes and probe sets in activated T-cells; analysis revealed that 217 genes were significantly upregulated within 4 h. Induced genes included transcription factors, cytokines and their receptor genes. Analysis by semi-quantitative RT-PCR confirmed the significant induction of IL-2, IL-2R(gamma) and IL-2R(alpha). Forty-eight of the 217 induced genes are known to or predicted to be regulated by a CRE promoter/enhancer. We found that T-cell activation caused a significant increase in CREB phosphorylation furthermore, inhibition of the PKC pathway by GF109203 reduced CREB activation by 50% and inhibition of the PKA pathway caused a total block of CREB phosphorylation and significantly reduced IFN(gamma), IL-2 and IL-2R(alpha) gene expression by approximately 40% (p<0.001). PKC(theta) plays a major role in T-cell activation: inhibition of PKC significantly reduced the expression of IFN(gamma), IL-2 and IL-2R(alpha). Since PKC blocked activation of CREB, we studied potential cross-talk between the PKC and the PKA/MAPK pathways, PMA-stimulated Jurkat cells were studied with specific signal pathway inhibitors. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase-2 (ERK2) pathway was found to be significantly activated greater than seven-fold within 30 min; however, there was little activation of ERK-1 and no activation of JNK or p38 MAPK. Inhibition of the PKA pathway, but not the PKC pathway, resulted in inhibition of ERK1/2 activation at all time points, inhibition of MEK1 and 2 significantly blocked expression of IL-2 and IL-2R(alpha). Gene expression of IL-2R(alpha) and IFN(gamma) was dependent on PKA in S49 wt cells but not in kin- mutants. Using gel shift analysis, we found that forskolin activation of T-cells resulted in activation of AP1 sites; this increase in nuclear extract AP1 was significantly blocked by MEK1 inhibitor U0126. Taken together, these results suggest that the PKA in addition to PKC and MAPK pathways plays a role in early T-cell activation and induction of IL-2, IL-2R(alpha) and IFN(gamma) gene expression.

Advanced Brine Processing to Enable U.S. Lithium Independence (CRADA Report)

Current production of LiOH, which is needed to make Li-ion battery cathode active materials, utilizes a multistep process including solar evaporation, precipitation with Na 2 CO 3 and then conversion to LiOH using Ca(OH) 2 . This process requires a large amount of land area for solar evaporation, the right weather conditions, and chemicals for the conversion process that result in NaCl and CaCO 3 waste products. The production of Ca(OH) 2 is very energy intensive and evolves significant quantities of CO 2 . An alternative process flow utilizing direct lithium extraction techniques, followed by a chemical free conversion process can have benefits in reducing the needed land requirements and chemicals for traditional brine processing. There are many potential direct lithium extraction technologies that are currently being developed. The direct lithium extraction process from typical brine sources will produce a LiCl solution with some impurities including typically high concentrations of Na. This brine then needs to be converted to LiOH for use in battery cathode production. Ideally this conversion could occur without the use of additional chemicals. Electrochemistry can do this conversion either via electrolysis or bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BPED) to produce LiOH and HCl in solution. BPED utilized bipolar membranes to split water, which has a reduced potential as compared to splitting water at electrodes into hydrogen and oxygen gas. This reduced potential required results in a significant energy savings for BPED over electrolysis methods. This CRADA project aimed to develop such an integrated process using direct lithium extraction followed by BPED to produce a LiOH solution. That solution can then be crystallized into battery grade LiOH. In particular, Albemarle utilized a direct lithium extraction process to produce a concentrated LiCl solution that could be used for the BPED process. The BPED process was first tested using various LiCl solutions with impurity ions added at bench scale to understand the effects of impurities and determine processing parameters. Then testing was performed using the direct lithium extracted brine at the bench scale before scaling the process up. After the process was scaled up a long duration test was carried out to estimate the lifetime of the membranes, which is key to the economics of the BPED process.

Advances in solar forecasting: Computer vision with deep learning

Renewable energy forecasting is crucial for integrating variable energy sources into the grid. It allows power systems to address the intermittency of the energy supply at different spatiotemporal scales. To anticipate the future impact of cloud displacements on the energy generated by solar facilities, conventional modeling methods rely on numerical weather prediction or physical models, which have difficulties in assimilating cloud information and learning systematic biases. Augmenting computer vision with machine learning overcomes some of these limitations by fusing real-time cloud cover observations with surface measurements acquired from multiple sources. This Review summarizes recent progress in solar forecasting from multisensor Earth observations with a focus on deep learning, which provides the necessary theoretical framework to develop architectures capable of extracting relevant information from data generated by ground-level sky cameras, satellites, weather stations, and sensor networks. Overall, machine learning has the potential to significantly improve the accuracy and robustness of solar energy meteorology; however, more research is necessary to realize this potential and address its limitations.

A unified thermionic and thermionic-field emission (TE–TFE) model for ideal Schottky reverse-bias leakage current

We present a unified thermionic emission (TE) and thermionic-field emission (TFE) model for the ideal reverse-bias leakage current in Schottky junctions. The unified TE–TFE analytical model advances upon previous analytical TFE models by Murphy–Good and Padovani–Stratton, which are the two most widely adopted models by the community, in two major aspects: (i) the applicability of the TFE expression therein is extended to near-zero surface electric fields by an error-function correction, allowing for the calculation of the total current by a nontrivial sum of TE (over-the-barrier current) and TFE (below-the-barrier current) contributions; therefore, an accurate description of the TE-to-TFE transition region is captured analytically for the first time; (ii) image-force lowering is considered with much-simpler correction terms. Comparisons with the reference numerical model show that the unified TE–TFE model has excellent accuracy, as well as a 10 000× reduction in computation time. The unified model is further tested against experimental data from Schottky barrier diodes based on Si, 4H-SiC, GaN, and β-Ga 2 O 3 , revealing accurate extractions of barrier heights and correct descriptions of the ideal reverse leakage characteristics. With the extended applicable range, improved accuracy, and computational efficiency, the unified TE–TFE model is highly valuable for the design and analysis of devices based on Schottky junctions, as well as for potential integration in technology computer-aided design (TCAD) tools.

Deep Learning-Assisted Real-Time Forward Modeling of Electromagnetic Logging in Complex Formations

Higher dimensional (i.e., 2-D and 3-D) modeling is indispensable to correctly evaluate the responses of electromagnetic logging tools in complex formation environments. However, limited by the high computational cost of rigorous modeling such as finite difference method and the finite element method, the real-time applications in the well logging industry primarily rely on the 1-D forward solver, which would result in erroneous formation evaluation for complex scenarios. As a result, aiming at realizing fast modeling for electromagnetic logging tools in complex formations, this paper proposes a general framework assisted by deep neural networks (DNNs). The framework consists of three modules: earth model classification, parameter extraction, and surrogate construction. Separate DNNs are trained and tested for different modules. The accuracy and efficiency of the DNN assisted fast modeling are validated by several experiments. Here, this study finds that the fast modeling assisted by DNNs is able to calculate the tool responses and reconstruct the subsurface formations in real-time.

Rapid High-Resolution Analysis of Polysaccharide-Lignin Interactions in Secondary Plant Cell Walls Using Proton-Detected Solid-State NMR

The plant secondary cell wall, a complex matrix composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, is crucial for the mechanical strength and water-proofing properties of plant tissues, and serves as a primary source of biomass for biorenewable energy and biomaterials. Structural analysis of these polymers and their interactions within the secondary cell wall has been heavily relying on 13 C-based solid-state NMR techniques. In this study, we explore the application of 1 H-detected solid-state NMR techniques for rapid, high-resolution structural characterization of polysaccharides and lignin, demonstrated on the stems of hardwood eucalyptus. We explored the use of synthesized 2D spectra to resolve central 1 H resonances and the combined application of 3D hCCH and hCHH experiments for complete resonance assignment and unambiguous identification of lignin-carbohydrate interactions. Our findings emphasize the central role of acetylated three-fold xylan conformers, rather than two-fold, in stabilizing the carbohydrate-lignin interface, with glucuronic acid sidechains in eucalyptus glucuronoxylan colocalizing with lignin, revised cellulose-lignin interactions involving uncoated microfibril surfaces, and pectin-lignin interactions indicative of early-stage lignification. These results present a novel approach for rapid structural analysis of lignocellulosic biomaterials without the need for solubilization or extraction.

Lattice-QCD Computable Quark Correlation Functions at Three-Loop Order and Extraction of Splitting Functions

We present the first complete next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order calculation of the matching coefficients that link unpolarized flavor nonsinglet parton distribution functions with lattice QCD computable correlation functions. By using this high-order result, we notice a reduction in theoretical uncertainties compared to relying solely on previously known lower-order matching coefficients. Furthermore, based on this result we have extracted the three-loop unpolarized flavor nonsinglet splitting function, which is in agreement with the state-of-the-art result. Because of the simplicity of our method, it has the potential to advance the calculation of splitting functions to the desired four-loop order.

"DUST BUSTER" - A Single Photon Ionization TOF MS for Cometary Dusts

It is hard to predict the properties and composition of dust that will be returned by STARDUST from WED- 2. The most interesting but challenging case would be grains, pg to fg in weight, each carrying its own isotopic signature characteristic of its source zones in a variety of stars. How do we extract the maximum amount of science from such grains? Clearly, the best that can be accomplished is to measure every atom in each grain.Academia Sinica and Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) have entered into a collaboration to develop a SPI TOF MS instrument for analysis of stardust grains. A new instrument will be built at Academia Sinica based on the new TOF mass spectrometer design developed, built and operating at ANL. The instrument is intended for SPI TOF MS analysis of elements from Ca to Cu plus Li after first using SIMS to measure H, C, N, 0, Si, and S. There are still technical challenges facing the technique. We will need to improve submicrometer sample handling, avoid the effects of space charge, and increase the Mamie range of the detector. The most difficult obstacle to overcome may be the fact that the flux density of present high repetition rate, WV lasers is below the level needed to ensure full ionization (saturation) in the source region, which must be several mm in size to achieve the high useful yield needed for analysis of small stardust grains. A potential breakthrough effort is to exploit the novel free electron laser being pioneered at ANL. In principle, this FEL can reach ionization saturation and is tunable up to photon energies of 25 eV, which is higher than the ionization potential of any element.

Water dynamics in C–S–H and M-S-H cement pastes: A revised jump-diffusion and rotation-diffusion model

The Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering (QENS) spectra from four cement pastes are re-analyzed by a new revised jump-diffusion and rotation-diffusion model (rJRM). From the QENS fit, it can be seen that the rJRM is an improved model to fit QENS spectra within the whole detected neutron energy transfer and scattering vector. By the rJRM fitting, the structure parameters extracted from QENS spectra show that both the additives aluminum-silicate nanotubes (ASN) and carboxyl group functionalized ASN (ASN-COOH) can improve magnesium-silicate-hydrate (M-S-H) toward calcium-silicate-hydrate (C–S–H) direction in mechanical properties, but the improvement is weakened with decreasing temperatures. The extracted dynamical parameters show that there is a dynamic anomaly near 230 K in not only translational but also rotational diffusion of water confined in all the investigated samples. In conclusion, the anomaly in rotational diffusion is new compared with those results obtained by the QENS fit using other models.

Net Electronic Charge as an Effective Electronic Descriptor for Oxygen Release and Transport Properties of SrFeO 3 -based Oxygen Sorbents

Perovskite oxides, as oxygen sorbents, exhibit excellent potential in thermochemical redox applications such as chemical looping air separation (CLAS), resulting from their excellent redox properties and high tunability. The structural and compositional flexibility of perovskites, while making these mixed oxides highly versatile, also poses challenges for their design and optimization. Moreover, the elevated operating temperature and dynamic oxygen partial pressure swings during redox processes add additional complications for oxygen sorbent design. From a fundamental standpoint, finding simple yet effective descriptors for the effect of cation substitutions on oxygen sorbents’ redox and oxygen transport properties are of significant importance for rational optimization of perovskite-based oxygen sorbents. In the present study, a series of A/B-site-doped SrFeO 3-δ perovskites are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) + U simulations. From these simulations, an effective electronic structural descriptor, the net electronic charge (Δe) of oxygen anions, is extracted based on its excellent correlations with vacancy formation energy, experimentally derived oxygen capacity, and oxygen vacancy migration barrier. Overall, these findings provide an effective tool to correlate the oxygen sorbents’ redox performances with a simple yet physically meaningful descriptor for rational design and optimization of perovskites in the context of CLAS.

Experimental evidence of plasmarons and effective fine structure constant in electron-doped graphene/h-BN heterostructure

Electron-electron interaction is fundamental in condensed matter physics and can lead to composite quasiparticles called plasmarons, which strongly renormalize the dispersion and carry information of electron-electron coupling strength as defined by the effective fine structure constant $α$ $^{*}_{ee}$. Although h-BN with unique dielectric properties has been widely used as an important substrate for graphene, so far there is no experimental report of plasmarons in graphene/h-BN yet. Here, we report direct experimental observation of plasmaron dispersion in graphene/h-BN heterostructures through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements upon in situ electron doping. Characteristic diamond-shaped dispersion is observed near the Dirac cone in both 0° (aligned) and 13.5° (twisted) graphene/h-BN, and the electron-electron interaction strength $α$ $^{*}_{ee}$ is extracted to be $α$ $^{*}_{ee}$ ≈ 0.9 ± 0.1, highlighting the important role of electron-electron interaction. Our results suggest graphene/h-BN as an ideal platform for investigating strong electron-electron interaction with weak dielectric screening, and lays fundamental physics for gate-tunable nano-electronics and nano-plasmonics.

ExCALiBR: An Instrument for Uncovering the Origin of the Moon’s Organics.

Lipids are organic molecules of great astrobiological interest for future NASA missions to the Moon, Mars and Icy Worlds. Lipids are essential for life as we know it, and likely also required for putative extraterrestrial organisms. These robust organics can be synthesized abiotically and survive for long periods of geological time. Laboratory characterization techniques are well established but are laborious, operator dependent, and require large volumes of consumables, precluding in situ analysis. We are developing an autonomous, miniaturized fluidic system, integrating lab techniques for lipid analysis while minimizing rea-gent volumes and concentrating organics for analysis, thereby increasing signal-to-noise ratios by orders of magnitude. This system, the Extractor for Chemical Analysis of Lipid Biomarkers in Regolith (ExCALiBR), will enable future organic surveys by extracting and concentrating lipids from approximately 50 grams of regolith using a fluidic and microfluidic sample processor made of materials compatible with non-aqueous solvents required for extraction. ExCAL-iBR can be deployed on a lander or used on a crewed mission.

CAMFeND: Credibility-Aware Multimodal Fake News Detection with Rotational Attention

In the evolving digital landscape, fake news is a significant challenge, influencing public perception and decision-making. Traditional detection approaches focus on single-modal data or simple multimodal fusion, often overlooking deeper interactions and news credibility. We propose a novel model addressing these limitations by introducing rotational attention and news domain information as a feature. Unlike static attention mechanisms, our rotational attention dynamically shifts query, key, and value roles across text and image inputs, enabling richer cross-modal interaction. Incorporating news domain information further enhances the model’s reliability by associating news posts with top domains extracted from Google search results, reducing false detections. This approach assesses both the content and the broader web context in which the news is discussed. Our model outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods by providing deeper, layered multimodal integration and domain information analysis, resulting in a more robust and adaptive fake news detection system.

Partial muon capture rates in A = 3 and A = 6 nuclei with chiral effective field theory

Searches for neutrinoless-double beta decay rates are crucial in addressing questions within fundamental symmetries and neutrino physics. The rates of these decays depend not only on unknown parameters associated with neutrinos, but also on nuclear properties. In order to reliably extract information about the neutrino, one needs an accurate treatment of the complex many-body dynamics of the nucleus. Neutrinoless-double beta decays take place at momentum transfers on the order of 100 MeV/$c$ and require both nuclear electroweak vector and axial current matrix elements. Muon capture, a process in the same momentum transfer regime, has readily available experimental data to validate these currents. In this work, we present results of {\it ab initio} calculations of partial muon capture rates for $^3$He and $^6$Li nuclei using variational and Green's Function Monte Carlo computational methods. We estimate the impact of the three-nucleon interactions, the cutoffs used to regularize two-nucleon ($2N$) interactions, and the energy range of $2N$ scattering data used to fit these interactions.

Physics-based Models, Machine Learning, and Experiment: Towards Understanding Complex Electrode Degradation

Degradation phenomena in Li-ion batteries are highly complex, coupled, and sensitive to use history and operating conditions. In this study, we show how tracking model parameters in continuum-level physics-based models, expedited by machine learning, can be useful in testing hypotheses for degradation mechanisms. An exemplary analysis using this approach is presented for a set of lithium trivanadate ( L i x V 3 O 8 ) cathodes cycled over a range of current rates. A simple cell revival process is combined with the parameter estimates over the course of cycling to extract valuable insights into cathode evolution and eliminate hypothesized degradation mechanisms for these cathodes. The presented approach is expected to be broadly applicable for degradation analysis of other electrodes.

Chemical-Free Lithium Separation from High-Salinity Brines Using Model-Informed and Machine Learning-Optimized Multi-Column Zwitterionic Chromatography

Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technologies often struggle to produce high-purity lithium salts from high-salinity brines, as current approaches require chemical-based elution, regeneration, and precipitation steps, resulting in significant environmental footprints. A novel salt fractionation approach using carboxybetaine resin, known as zwitterionic chromatography (ZIC), has demonstrated that lithium ions can be separated from divalent cations under high-salinity conditions using only water as eluent, with no regeneration required. To enable continuous and scalable deployment of this approach, we developed a chemical-free Multi-column Zwitterionic Chromatography (MZC) process and its theoretical and process models. To predict and optimize this nontraditional separation system, we introduced a novel anti-Langmuir isotherm, and the isotherm parameters were estimated through a machine learning-driven optimization based on artificial neural network ensembles with numerical feasibility assessment. Using machine learning-driven optimization, the MZC process achieved 98.0% lithium recovery, 99.5 % Li/(Li + Mg + Ca) purity, a 31.3% productivity increase, and a 33% reduction in water use compared to batch operation. The proposed MZC process enables lithium separation at $0.6-1.2 kg-1 Li, with costs dominated by resin manufacturing, while offering lower separation costs and carbon footprint compared with conventional carbonation. Overall, these findings position the MZC process as an effective polishing step within scalable and sustainable lithium production pipelines.

Phonon-exciton Interactions in WSe 2 under a quantizing magnetic field

Strong many-body interaction in two-dimensional transitional metal dichalcogenides provides a unique platform to study the interplay between different quasiparticles, such as prominent phonon replica emission and modified valley-selection rules. A large out-of-plane magnetic field is expected to modify the exciton-phonon interactions by quantizing excitons into discrete Landau levels, which is largely unexplored. Here, we observe the Landau levels originating from phonon-exciton complexes and directly probe exciton-phonon interaction under a quantizing magnetic field. Phonon-exciton interaction lifts the inter-Landau-level transition selection rules for dark trions, manifested by a distinctively different Landau fan pattern compared to bright trions. This allows us to experimentally extract the effective mass of both holes and electrons. The onset of Landau quantization coincides with a significant increase of the valley-Zeeman shift, suggesting strong many-body effects on the phonon-exciton interaction. Our work demonstrates monolayer WSe 2 as an intriguing playground to study phonon-exciton interactions and their interplay with charge, spin, and valley.
