Results of a Loran-C flight test using an absolute data reference

A closed circuit flight test was conducted in the Boston area using VOR's and NDB's as reference points. The Loran-C data collected during the flight was then compared against a reference provided by the Discrete Address Beacon System (DABS) facility at Lincoln Laboratories. A MIT crew used a commercial receiver and recorded Loran-C time differences which would also be compared with the data provided by the DABS facility and eventually with the data collected by Ohio University. The Ohio University low-cost receiver was used for this test which was conducted in the Ohio University DC-3 flying laboratory. The Loran-C time-difference data was recorded with a microcomputer data collection system and stored on magnetic tape for subsequent analysis. The MIT receiver was also on board the DC-3, and recorded its data on a cassette tape which was later used by the MIT crew for data analysis. The equipment configuration in the aircraft, the flight procedure and the results obtained from the data collected with Ohio University's receiver and recording system are described.

Atomic emission spectroscopy

The relationship between the Slater-Condon theory and the conditions within the atom as revealed by experimental data was investigated. The first spectrum of Si, Rb, Cl, Br, I, Ne, Ar, and Xe-136 and the second spectrum of As, Cu, and P were determined. Methods for assessing the phase stability of fringe counting interferometers and the design of an autoranging scanning system for digitizing the output of an infrared spectrometer and recording it on magnetic tape are described.

Automated frequency standard stability data reduction

A design using a medium sized computer, a fiber optic communication link, and a desk top computer to reduce data collected at a remote site for analysis of frequency standard tests is described. Data generated at the Interim Frequency Standards Test Facility is collected on magnetic tape, which is then transported to a Sigma 5 computer. An Allan variance (two sample variance) is then calculated. The Allan variance (sigma vs tau) is then written to a data file in the Sigma 5. A fiber optic communication link between the Sigma 5 and a desk top computer was designed to transmit data in the Sigma 5 file to the desk top computer. A program was written for the desk top computer that will automatically access the data file in the Sigma 5, process the data and provide a data plot.

Physiological response to hyper- and hypogravity during rollercoaster flight

Twenty-six healthy male subjects were flown in a Lear jet aircraft through rollercoaster and parabolic weightlessness flight. Eye movements, respiration, and blood volume pulse were recorded on magnetic tape. The same subjects underwent a battery of five vestibular tests in the laboratory on the ground. One subject in each flight was flown in an upright position, the other in a 90 deg forward tilted head position. The forward tilted subjects always reported motion sickness earlier and after fewer rollercoaster maneuvers than the upright-sitting subjects. It is concluded that the susceptibility to changes of X-axis acceleration is higher than to changes of Z-axis acceleration. Correlation was found between the ability to estimate the subjective vertical (modified Mueller-Aubert-test), optokinetic nystagmus asymmetries, and susceptibility to rollercoaster flight sickness.

Water depth measurement using an airborne pulsed neon laser system

The paper presents the water depth measurement using an airborne pulsed neon laser system. The results of initial base-line field test results of NASA airborne oceanographic lidar in the bathymetry mode are given, with water-truth measurements of depth and beam attenuation coefficients by boat taken at the same time as overflights to aid in determining the system's operational performance. The nadir-angle tests and field-of-view data are presented; this laser bathymetry system is an improvement over prior models in that (1) the surface-to-bottom pulse waveform is digitally recorded on magnetic tape, and (2) wide-swath mapping data may be routinely acquired using a 30 deg full-angle conical scanner.

Space shuttle simulation model

The effects of atmospheric turbulence in both horizontal and near horizontal flight, during the return of the space shuttle, are important for determining design, control, and 'pilot-in-the-loop' effects. A nonrecursive model (based on von Karman spectra) for atmospheric turbulence along the flight path of the shuttle orbiter was developed which provides for simulation of instantaneous vertical and horizontal gusts at the vehicle center-of-gravity, and also for simulation of instantaneous gust gradients. Based on this model, the time series for both gusts and gust gradients were generated and stored on a series of magnetic tapes which are entitled shuttle simulation turbulence tapes (SSTT). The time series are designed to represent atmospheric turbulence from ground level to an altitude of 10,000 meters. The turbulence generation procedure is described as well as the results of validating the simulated turbulence. Conclusions and recommendations are presented and references cited. The tabulated one dimensional von Karman spectra and the results of spectral and statistical analyses of the SSTT are contained in the appendix.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of an atlas of ultraviolet stellar spectra and a second atlas of ultraviolet stellar spectra from OAO 2 observations

The magnetic tape version of the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory 2 atlases of ultraviolet stellar spectra is described. The first file of the tape contains ultraviolet stellar fluxes for 164 bright stars in lambda the spectral region 1200 to 1300 A with resolutions of 22 A in the region from 3600 to 1850 A and 12 A in the region from 1850 to 1160 A. Files two and three contain spectra for 132 stars in the region lamba 1200 to 1850 A and 34 stars in the lambda region 1800 to 3600 A, respectively, with resolutions as stated above. The monochromatic flux is given in units of ergs cm(-2)s(-1) (-1) for all data.

Submillimeter, millimeter, and microwave spectral line catalogue

A computer accessible catalogue of submillimeter, millimeter and microwave spectral lines in the frequency range between 0 and 3000 GHZ (i.e., wavelengths longer than 100 mu m) is presented which can be used a planning guide or as an aid in the identification and analysis of observed spectral lines. The information listed for each spectral line includes the frequency and its estimated error, the intensity, lower state energy, and quantum number assignment. The catalogue was constructed by using theoretical least squares fits of published spectral lines to accepted molecular models. The associated predictions and their estimated errors are based upon the resultant fitted parameters and their covariances. Future versions of this catalogue will add more atoms and molecules and update the present listings (133 species) as new data appear. The catalogue is available as a magnetic tape recorded in card images and as a set of microfiche records.

Viking lander imaging investigation during extended and continuation automatic missions. Volume 1: Lander 1 picture catalog of experiment data record

All images returned by Viking Lander 1 during the extended and continuation automatic phases of the Viking Mission are presented. Listings of supplemental information which describe the conditions under which the images were acquired are included together with skyline drawings which show where the images are positioned in the field of view of the cameras. Subsets of the images are listed in a variety of sequences to aid in locating images of interest. The format and organization of the digital magnetic tape storage of the images are described as well as the mission and the camera system.

Infrared Imagery of Shuttle (IRIS). Task 1, summary report

The feasibility of remote, high-resolution infrared imagery of the Shuttle Orbiter lower surface during entry to obtain accurate measurements of aerodynamic heat transfer was demonstrated. Using available technology, such images can be taken from an existing aircraft/telescope system (the C141 AIRO) with minimum modification or addition of systems. Images with a spatial resolution of 1 m or better and a temperature resolution of 2.5% between temperatures of 800 and 1900 K can be obtained. Data reconstruction techniques can provide a geometrically and radiometrically corrected array on addressable magnetic tape ready for display by NASA.

A microcomputer based data acquisition system and experiment controller

A data acquisition system is described. The system monitors and records the signal strength of a radio beacon sent to Earth from a geosynchronous satellite. It acquires data from several devices such as a radar, a radiometer, and a rain gauge which monitor the meteorological conditions along the Earth space propagation path. The acquired data are stored in digital format on magnetic tape for analysis at the computer center. A detailed description of the design and operation of the system's various hardware components is given. Schematic diagrams, the theory of operation, and normal operating procedures are presented.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the thirteen color photometry of 1380 bright stars

The magnetic tape version of the catalogue of thirteen-color photometry of 1380 bright stars, containing data on the 13 color medium narrow band photometric system is described. Observations of essentially all stars brighter than fifth visual magnitude north of delta = -20 deg and brighter than fourth visual magnitude south of delta = -20 deg are included. It is intended to enable users to read and process the tape without the common difficulties and uncertainties.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the catalog of 5,268 standard stars, 1950.0 based on the normal system N30

The machine-readable version of the N30 catalog available on magnetic tape from the Astronomical Data Center is described. Numerical representations of some data fields on the original catalog were changed to conform more closely to formats being used for star-catalog data, plus all records having asterisks indicating footnotes in the published catalog now have corresponding remarks entries in a second tape file; i.e. the footnotes in the published catalog were computerized and are contained in a second file of the tape.

Simulation of atmospheric turbulent gusts and gust gradients

An improved three-dimensional, nonrecursive model for atmospheric turbulence has been developed which provides for simulation of both instantaneous gusts and gust gradients along the flight path of the Space Shuttle. The one-dimensional gust and gust gradient spectral models, which form the basis for the simulation scheme, are developed from three-dimensional, von Karman spectra, integrated over finite limits based on the characteristic dimensions (length, width, and thickness) of the flight vehicle. By means of the simulation process nondimensional time series for both gusts and gust gradients have been generated and stored on a series of magnetic tapes for four altitude bands ranging from 0 to 10,000 meters. These Shuttle Simulated Turbulence Tapes (SSTT) have been validated by means of spectral and statistical analyses with satisfactory results. The dimensionless form of the time series coupled with the use of a von Karman spectral model (as opposed to a Dryden model) distinguish the SSTT from earlier turbulence simulation concepts.

In-flight jet engine noise measurement system

An instrumentation system in flight tests for noise research is described which utilizes miniature transducers to measure low-amplitude, high-frequency fluctuating pressures in a jet engine mounted under the wing of a turboprop aircraft. The system employs a rotor-mounted FM telemeter to acquire data from eight fan-blade-mounted transducers which are subjected to up to 75,000 g's of loading. Data is transmitted from the rotor to an antenna mounted in the inlet-duct wall using a low-power, close-coupled RF link. The blade pressures and other inlet and stator-vane fluctuating pressures are recorded on airborne, magnetic-tape recorders. The flight instrumentation described also includes PCM techniques to encode and record a variety of quasi-static measurements to provide engine and aircraft performance data. The instrumentation and experimental measurements are of value to an improved understanding of noise sources in jet engines and for the advancement of jet-engine ground noise testing techniques.
