Conformal Thin Film Packaging for SiC Sensor Circuits in Harsh Environments

In this investigation sputtered silicon carbide annealed at 300 C for one hour is used as a conformal thin film package. A RF magnetron sputterer was used to deposit 500 nm silicon carbide films on gold metal structures on alumina wafers. To determine the reliability and resistance to immersion in harsh environments, samples were submerged in gold etchant for 24 hours, in BOE for 24 hours, and in an O2 plasma etch for one hour. The adhesion strength of the thin film was measured by a pull test before and after the chemical immersion, which indicated that the film has an adhesion strength better than 10(exp 8) N/m2; this is similar to the adhesion of the gold layer to the alumina wafer. MIM capacitors are used to determine the dielectric constant, which is dependent on the SiC anneal temperature. Finally, to demonstrate that the SiC, conformal, thin film may be used to package RF circuits and sensors, an LC resonator circuit was fabricated and tested with and without the conformal SiC thin film packaging. The results indicate that the SiC coating adds no appreciable degradation to the circuits RF performance. Index Terms Sputter, silicon carbide, MIM capacitors, LC resonators, gold etchants, BOE, O2 plasma

Instrument Packages for the Cold, Dark, High Radiation Environments

We are developing a small cold temperature instrument package concept that integrates a cold temperature power system and radhard ultra low temperature ultra low power electronics components and power supplies now under development into a cold temperature surface operational version of a planetary surface instrument package. We are already in the process of developing a lower power lower tem-perature version for an instrument of mutual interest to SMD and ESMD to support the search for volatiles (the mass spectrometer VAPoR, Volatile Analysis by Pyrolysis of Regolith) both as a stand alone instrument and as part of an environmental monitoring package.

Physics of Failure Analysis of Xilinx Flip Chip CCGA Packages: Effects of Mission Environments on Properties of LP2 Underfill and ATI Lid Adhesive Materials

The Xilinx Virtex 4QV and 5QV (V4 and V5) are next-generation field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for space applications. However, there have been concerns within the space community regarding the non-hermeticity of V4/V5 packages; polymeric materials such as the underfill and lid adhesive will be directly exposed to the space environment. In this study, reliability concerns associated with the non-hermeticity of V4/V5 packages were investigated by studying properties and behavior of the underfill and the lid adhesvie materials used in V4/V5 packages.

Demonstration of a Packaged Capacitive Pressure Sensor System Suitable for Jet Turbofan Engine Health Monitoring

In this paper, the development and characterization of a packaged pressure sensor system suitable for jet engine health monitoring is demonstrated. The sensing system operates from 97 to 117 MHz over a pressure range from 0 to 350 psi and a temperature range from 25 to 500 deg. The sensing system consists of a Clapp-type oscillator that is fabricated on an alumina substrate and is comprised of a Cree SiC MESFET, MIM capacitors, a wire-wound inductor, chip resistors and a SiCN capacitive pressure sensor. The pressure sensor is located in the LC tank circuit of the oscillator so that a change in pressure causes a change in capacitance, thus changing the resonant frequency of the sensing system. The chip resistors, wire-wound inductors and MIM capacitors have all been characterized at temperature and operational frequency, and perform with less than 5% variance in electrical performance. The measured capacitive pressure sensing system agrees very well with simulated results. The packaged pressure sensing system is specifically designed to measure the pressure on a jet turbofan engine. The packaged system can be installed by way of borescope plug adaptor fitted to a borescope port exposed to the gas path of a turbofan engine.

PyDDA: A New Pythonic Wind Retrieval Package

PyDDA (Pythonic Direct Data Assimilation) is a new community framework aimed at wind retrievals that depends only upon utilities in the SciPy ecosystem such as scipy, numpy, and dask. It can support retrievals of winds using information from weather radar networks constrained by high resolution forecast models over grids that cover thousands of kilometers at kilometer-scale resolution. Unlike past wind retrieval packages, this package can be installed using anaconda for easy installation and, with a focus on ease of use can retrieve winds from gridded radar and model data with just a few lines of code. The package is currently available for download at https://github.com/openradar/PyDDA.

Novel High Barrier Films for Packaging Food and Medicine

Long manned missions require food packaging to maintain food safety, nutrition, and acceptability for the length of 3-5 years1,2 while the shelf life assigned by NASA for current provisions is 18-24 months1. The focus of this design project was to make a polymer film specifically to function as a high oxygen barrier to later be included in an improved multi-layer packaging system of other specialized polymers with capabilities to allow for a 5-year shelf-life. To qualify as a high oxygen barrier film and to be a successful design for the future packaging, the resulting film is required to have an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) less than 0.06 cc/ m2/24 hr/atm, the standard for the current packaging3. This new film was designed to have a decreased permeability by increasing the “tortuous path” a gas molecule travels to permeate through a film. The increase in the “tortuous path” of a gas molecule is accomplished by introducing a 2D material additive. The additive chosen for this project was hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) which exfoliates into boron nitride nanosheets (BNNs). Nylon 6 was chosen as the candidate for the matrix. This project is required to determine the best methods to synthesize the sample film and then to test the OTR of the film to determine if this design was successful. This project examined methods for pulverizing polymer resin pellets, h-BN exfoliation, and film fabrication using a hot press. This report includes the exfoliation and analysis of h-BN, procedural preparations for films, and a modeling study of estimated OTR of the h-BN/Nylon. The work in this report did not yield a high barrier composite film because of the laboratory closure in response to COVID -19 guidance but provides a concise method of the additive preparation and film synthesis. This gives a good starting point for future research in high barrier films by 2D additive composites.

TriTruss Packaging and Deployment Trade Study

An architecture and feasibility study of next generation In-Space Assembled Telescopes (iSAT) concluded that robotic in-space assembly of modular components is necessary to enable large (>15-meter diameter) primary apertures. The iSAT study recommended that the foundational structure be assembled from modular TriTruss modules that are packaged for launch, deployed on-orbit and robotically assembled into the final configuration. This paper will describe and summarize the results of a trade study that investigated viable concept of operations (ConOps) for the packaging and deployment (P&D) of individual planar TriTruss modules that could be assembled to form a large aperture iSAT. The ideal TriTruss P&D concept is defined as one that: allows for efficient packaging; has sufficient geometric versatility to be launch vehicle independent; provides a stiff and lightweight structure; has low mechanical complexity; and has component modularity. The P&D concept should allow for prelaunch subsystem or utility integration if required. The concept would be kinematically simple and be robotically deployed using a minimum number of specialized tools. In this first phase of an ongoing more comprehensive trade study, concepts were proposed and then evaluated based on initial metrics representing features of an ideal P&D concept. The P&D concepts evaluated are categorized as: core collapse, face collapse, and erectable structures. Sub-scale models were constructed to help understand the kinematics and mechanical complexity required to enable P&D. Based on a weighting scale, the most promising candidate P&D concepts have selected and will undergo more rigorous structural design, analysis, and testing in the study’s next phase. The ultimate goal of the comprehensive trade study will be to recommend a single TriTruss design and associated P&D concept that will be built and evaluated at NASA Langley Research Center’s In-Space Assembly Laboratory.

Pypromice: A Python Package for Processing Automated Weather Station Data

The pypromice Python package is for processing and handling observation datasets from automated weather stations (AWS). It is primarily aimed at users of AWS data from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), which collects and distributes in situ weather station observations to the cryospheric science research community. Functionality in pypromice is primarily handled using two key open-source Python packages, xarray (Hoyer & Hamman, 2017) and pandas (The pandas development team, 2020). A defined processing workflow is included in pypromice for transforming original AWS observations (Level 0, L0) to a usable, CF-convention-compliant dataset (Level 3, L3) (Figure 1). Intermediary processing levels (L1,L2) refer to key stages in the workflow, namely the conversion of variables to physical measurements and variable filtering (L1), cross-variable corrections and user-defined data flagging and fixing (L2), and derived variables (L3). Information regarding the station configuration is needed to perform the processing, such as instrument calibration coefficients and station type (one-boom tripod or two-boom mast station design, for example), which are held in a toml configuration file. Two example configuration files are provided with pypromice , which are also used in the package’s unit tests. More detailed documentation of the AWS design, instrumentation, and processing steps are described in Fausto et al. (2021).

Intercomparing Open Source Surface Water Extent Mapping Products & Software Packages

The open source revolution of Earth Observation (EO) science has resulted in increased openness of EO data, workflows to transform that data into end products (e.g. surface water extent maps), and the products themselves. However, this revolution has oversaturated decision-makers with products that can give conflicting results. Thus, it is increasingly crucial for scientists to communicate their methodologies and assumptions so scientific products can be used accurately. Recognizing this challenge, SERVIR – a joint initiative between NASA, USAID, and geospatial organizations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America – is conducting a regional intercomparison of open source surface water extent products and packages. SERVIR’s Hindu Kush Himalaya and Southeast Asia “hubs” have developed satellite-based surface water mapping services involving customizable code packages that are operationally run at each hub. These services are regionally and locally tailored to inform specific decisions and early actions. Conversely, the scientific community has released surface water products that are global or near-global, but are not customizable. These packages and products employ different methodologies and sensors, causing decision-makers to evaluate trade-offs related to physical sensor characteristics (e.g. spectral, temporal, and spatial resolution, and latency). We will discuss the tradeoffs, strengths, and weaknesses of the sensor characteristics and methodologies associated with each product/package, and provide preliminary results of a validation effort intercomparing products/packages for case studies in South and Southeast Asia. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of these products is crucial in both the aftermath of a flood event and in preparing for future floods.

Building an Efficient Cluster Cosmology Software Package for Modeling Cluster Counts and Lensing

We introduce a software suite developed for galaxy cluster cosmological analysis with the Dark Energy Survey Data. Cosmological analyses based on galaxy cluster number counts and weak-lensing measurements need efficient software infrastructure to explore an increasingly large parameter space, and account for various cosmological and astrophysical effects. Our software package is designed to model the cluster observables in a wide-field optical survey, including galaxy cluster counts, their averaged weak-lensing masses, or the cluster's averaged weak-lensing radial signals. To ensure maximum efficiency, this software package is developed in C++ in the CosmoSIS software framework, making use of the CUBA integration library. We also implement a testing and validation scheme to ensure the quality of the package. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this development by applying the software to the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 galaxy cluster cosmological data sets, and acquired cosmological constraints that are consistent with the fiducial Dark Energy Survey analysis.
