Plasma chamber testing of advanced photovoltaic solar array coupons

The solar array module plasma interactions experiment is a space shuttle experiment designed to investigate and quantify the high voltage plasma interactions. One of the objectives of the experiment is to test the performance of the Advanced Photovoltaic Solar Array (APSA). The material properties of array blanket are also studied as electric insulators for APSA arrays in high voltage conditions. Three twelve cell prototype coupons of silicon cells were constructed and tested in a space simulation chamber.

Planetary and Deep Space Requirements for Photovoltaic Solar Arrray

Most spacecraft are powered by nuclear sources. Now, on smaller, low-cost missions, photovoltaic arrays are being planned. Because they may be exposed to high temperatures and radiation when exploring the inner planets, cell materials and array structures must be able to perform at high incidence angles.

Design of Photovoltaic Power System for a Precursor Mission for Human Exploration of Mars

This project analyzed the viability of a photovoltaic power source for technology demonstration mission to demonstrate Mars in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) to produce propellant for a future human mission, based on technology available within the next ten years. For this assessment, we performed a power-system design study for a scaled ISRU demonstrator lander on the Mars surface based on existing solar array technologies.

Photovoltaic Investigation on the Lunar Surface (PILS): Design Considerations and Ground Testing

The PILS (Photovoltaic Investigation on the Lunar Surface) platform consists of flight demonstrations of multiple solar cell technologies that could be used for future lunar missions. It also includes a solar charging experiment to shape design considerations of high voltage solar arrays on the Moon that could power in-situ resource utilization systems and other lunar surface assets. This poster and conference proceedings describe the design considerations of the PILS platform and ground testing performed prior to spacecraft integration. The platform is expected to operate on the lunar surface at Lacus Mortis in late 2022.

Photovoltaic Investigation on the Lunar Surface (PILS) – PV Testbed for Lunar Landers

The PILS (Photovoltaic Investigation on the Lunar Surface) platform provides an opportunity to test state of the art solar cell technologies on the lunar surface. The first PILS mission is scheduled to operate on the lunar surface at Lacus Mortis in late 2022 onboard the Astrobotic Peregrine lander. The platform, designed, built, and tested at the NASA Glenn Research Center, includes multiple solar cell technologies from various vendors that could be used for future lunar missions and a solar charging experiment to shape design considerations of high voltage solar arrays on the Moon. This presentation will describe the mission requirements, design considerations, and ground testing performed prior to spacecraft integration. Considerations for future PILS missions will also be discussed.

Cuprous selenide and sulfide form improved photovoltaic barriers

Photovoltaic barriers formed by depositing a layer of polycrystalline cuprous sulfide or cuprous selenide on gallium arsenide are chemically and electrically stable. The stability of these barrier materials is significantly greater than that of cuprous iodide.

Photovoltaic effect in organic polymer-iodine complex

Certain charge transfer complexes formed from organic polymers and iodine generate appreciable voltages at relatively low impedances upon exposure to light. These films show promise in applications requiring chemically and electrically stable films as detectors of optical radiation and as energy converters in photovoltaic cells.
