A status report devoted to progress of design, manufacturing and test activities for each element of the Space Shuttle is presented. In particular, attention is given to system engineering and integration, the orbiter and its subsystems, the carrier aircraft, the main engine, the external tank, the solid rocket booster, the launch and landing facilities, and ground and orbital flight tests.
The papers in this compilation were presented at the NASA Symposium on "Supercritical Wing Technology: A Progress Report on Flight Evaluation" held at the NASA Flight Research Center, Edwards, Calif., on February 29, 1972. The purpose of the symposium was to present timely information on flight results obtained with the F-8 and T-2C supercritical wing configurations, discuss comparisons with wind-tunnel predictions, and project [ ] flight programs planned for the F-8 and F-III (TACT) airplanes.
Advanced materials, coatings, and cooling technology is assessed in terms of improved aircraft turbine engine performance. High cycle operating temperatures, lighter structural components, and adequate resistance to the various environmental factors associated with aircraft gas turbine engines are among the factors considered. Emphasis is placed on progress in development of high temperature materials for coating protection against oxidation, hot corrosion and erosion, and in turbine cooling technology. Specific topics discussed include metal matrix composites, superalloys, directionally solidified eutectics, and ceramics.
Monthly progress reports are given in the areas of marketable subsystems integration; development, design, and building of site data acquisition subsystems and data processing systems; operation of the solar test facility and a systems analysis.
The paper reviews current progress in the development of atmospheric models. Consideration is given to CIRA 1972 (COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere), the OGO 6 model (1974), the ESRO 4 model (1977), the global Doppler-temperature model of Thuillier et al. (1977), the Jacchia 1977 model (based on a synthesis of temperature, mass-spectrometer, and total-density data from many sources), and the MSIS model (1977), based on incoherent-scatter temperatures and mass-spectrometer data from various sources. New models of the disturbed thermosphere, developed by the author, are compared with recent mass-spectrometer measurements at 170 km.
The current status of the problem of gas turbine engine emissions is reviewed. Presently promulgated EPA standards and their implications for aircraft gas turbines are discussed. The progress and status of emissions reduction technology programs and other efforts which have emphasized advanced combustor technology are reviewed in detail. Also examined are those efforts underway to determine the emissions floor and incorporate those techniques into practical combustors of the future.
A procedure is presented for determining the nonlinear behavior of structures subjected to extreme loading and the possibility of development of potential for progressive failure. The methodology takes into account the effect of both material and geometric nonlinearities. At a given stage of analysis, the individual components of the structure are checked against predetermined failure criteria. Subsequently, the failing components are removed and the modified structure is analyzed for overall failure. Examples, obtained from a computer program based on the proposed procedure, showing the applicability of the method are presented.
Although the development of a finite difference relaxation procedure to solve the steady form of equations of motion gave birth to the study of computational transonic aerodynamics and considerable progress has been made using the small disturbance theory, no general analytical solution method yet exists for transonic flows that include three dimensional unsteady, and viscous effects. Two techniques are described which are useful in computational transonic aerodynamics applications. The finite volume method simplifies the application of boundary conditions without introducing the constriction associated with small disturbance theory. Governing equations are solved in a Cartesian coordinate system using a body-oriented and shock-oriented mesh network. Only the volume and surface normal directions of the volume elements must be known. The other method, configuration design by numerical optimization, can be used by aircraft designers to develop configurations that satisfy specific geometric performance constraints. Two examples of airfoil design by numerical optimization are presented.
A report is given on progress made in a search for soft X-ray emission from RS CVn systems, using the low-energy detectors aboard HEAO 1. To date, nine systems have been seen. The properties of these systems are discussed. The failure to detect certain systems is considered. The possibility is discussed of discovering hitherto unknown RS CVn systems with soft X-ray observations.
Progress in the development and future requirements of the Variable Stream Control Engine (VSCE) are presented. The two most critical components of this advanced system for future supersonic transports, the high performance duct burner for thrust augmentation, and the low jet coannular nozzle were studied. Nozzle model tests substantiated the jet noise benefit associated with the unique velocity profile possible with a coannular nozzle system on a VSCE. Additional nozzle model performance tests have established high thrust efficiency levels only at takeoff and supersonic cruise for this nozzle system. An experimental program involving both isolated component and complete engine tests has been conducted for the high performance, low emissions duct burner with good results and large scale testing of these two components is being conducted using a F100 engine as the testbed for simulating the VSCE. Future work includes application of computer programs for supersonic flow fields to coannular nozzle geometries, further experimental testing with the duct burner segment rig, and the use of the Variable Cycle Engine (VCE) Testbed Program for evaluating the VSCE duct burner and coannular nozzle technologies.
Progress in the application of finite-volume methods to the calculation of transonic potential flows past general wing-body combinations is reviewed. Two different methods of generating boundary-conforming grids are investigated, and the results compared to provide an estimate of solution sensitivity to grid geometry. Both conservative and quasi-conservative difference schemes are used in one of the coordinate systems. Results show that the error introduced by the quasi-conservative formulation seems to be small, although a one-dimensional analysis suggests that schemes of this type do not necessarily produce mass-conserving shocks. Comparison of calculated results with experimental data for realistic fuselage geometries clearly shows the importance of modelling the effect of fuselage geometry upon the wing pressure distribution.
The paper discusses the Point-Focusing Thermal and Electric Applications Project which encompasses three primary activities: (1) applications analysis and development, in which potential markets for small power systems (less than 10 MWe) are identified and characterized in order to provide requirements for design and information for activities relating to market development; (2) systems engineering and development, for analyses that will define the most appropriate small power system designs based on specific user requirements; and (3) experiment implementation and test, which deals with the design and placement of engineering experiments in various applications environments in order to test the readiness of the selected technology in an operational setting. Progress to date and/or key results are discussed throughout the text.
The significant progress which has been achieved in development of aircraft ground handling simulation capability is reviewed and additional improvements in software modeling identified. The problem associated with providing necessary simulator input data for adequate modeling of aircraft tire/runway friction behavior is discussed and efforts to improve this complex model, and hence simulator fidelity, are described. Aircraft braking performance data obtained on several wet runway surfaces is compared to ground vehicle friction measurements and, by use of empirically derived methods, good agreement between actual and estimated aircraft braking friction from ground vehilce data is shown. The performance of a relatively new friction measuring device, the friction tester, showed great promise in providing data applicable to aircraft friction performance. Additional research efforts to improve methods of predicting tire friction performance are discussed including use of an instrumented tire test vehicle to expand the tire friction data bank and a study of surface texture measurement techniques.
Langley Research Center efforts to develop a methodology for predicting the effective perceived noise level (EPNL) produced by jet-powered CTOL aircraft to an accuracy of + or - 1.5 dB are summarized with emphasis on the aircraft noise prediction program (ANOPP) which contains a complete set of prediction methods for CTOL aircraft including propulsion system noise sources, aerodynamic or airframe noise sources, forward speed effects, a layered atmospheric model with molecular absorption, ground impedance effects including excess ground attenuation, and a received noise contouring capability. The present state of ANOPP is described and its accuracy and applicability to the preliminary aircraft design process is assessed. Areas are indicated where further theoretical and experimental research on noise prediction are needed. Topics covered include the elements of the noise prediction problem which are incorporated in ANOPP, results of comparisons of ANOPP calculations with measured noise levels, and progress toward treating noise as a design constraint in aircraft system studies.
The LASSO (Later Synchronisation from Stationary Orbit) experiment, designed to demonstrate the feasibility of achieving time synchronization between remote atomic clocks with an accuracy of one nanosecond or better by using laser techniques for the first time is described. The experiment uses groundbased laser stations and the SIRIO-2 geostationary satellite to be launched towards the end of 1981. The qualification of the LASSO on-board equipment is discussed with a brief description of the electrical and optical test equipment used. The progress of the operational organization is included.
At NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and through associated contractors, a broad spectrum of work is being carried out to develop improved hydrogen maser frequency standards for field use, improved experimental hydrogen maser frequency standards, and improved frequency and time distribution and measurement systems for hydrogen maser use. Recent progress in the following areas is reported: results on the Nr masers built by the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University, the development of a low cost hydrogen maser at Goddard Space Flight Center, and work on a low noise phase comparison system and digitally phase locked crystal oscillator called the distribution and measurement system.
Progress in the development and operations of the Deep Space Network is reported. Developments in Earth-based radio technology as applied to geodynamics, astrophysics, and the radio search for extraterrestrial intelligence are included.
We report here progress in a program designed to examine the feasibility of large scale production of low-cost silicon sheet substrates for solar cells by the EFG process. A multiple-ribbon EFG station, containing five single-ribbon cartridges, has been continuously operated for a period of 15 hours at a duty cycle of 94%. The average width of the ribbon grown was 5 cm, and the average growth speed was 3.4 cm/min. The cartridge concept of ribbon growth has been extended to successfully grow 10 cm wide ribbon at speeds up to 4 cm/min. Large area (approximately 50 sq cm) solar cells with efficiencies in the range from 8% to 11% (AM1) have been made from ribbon grown in the cartridge systems.
