A summary of the study and the salient results are presented. The topics included are: (1) TDRSS operations, (2) telecommunications service performance, telecommunications service equipment, (3) TDRS configurations and their design characteristics, and (4) TDRS system reliability.

Tracking and data relay satellite system configuration and tradeoff study. Volume 1: Study summary

A study was conducted to determine the configuration and tradeoffs of a tracking and data relay satellite. The study emphasized the design of a three axis stabilized satellite and a telecommunications system optimized for support of low and medium data rate user spacecraft. Telecommunications support to low and high, or low medium, and high data rate users, considering launches with the Delta 2914, the Atlas/Centaur, and the space shuttle was also considered. The following subjects are presented: (1) launch and deployment profile, (2) spacecraft mechanical and structural design, (3) attitude stabilization and control subsystem, and (4) reliability analysis.

Coordination procedure for radio relay and communication satellite services

A global rain rate statistic model is used to link microwave propagation statistics to measurable rain statistics in order to develop international telecommunication site criteria for radio relay and communication satellite services that minimize interference between receivers and transmitters. This rain coordination procedure utilizes a rain storm cell size, a statistical description of the rainfall rate within the cell valid for most of the earth's surface, approximations between Raleigh scatter and constancy of precipitation with altitude, and an analytic relation between radar reflectivity and rain rate.

Preliminary analysis of ERTS-relayed water resources data in the Delaware River Basin

Preliminary analysis of ERTS-DCS data from water-resources stations in the Delaware River Basin indicates that the Data-Collection System is performing well. Data-Collections Platforms have been successfully interfaced with five stream-gaging station and three ground-water observation wells and are being interfaced with 12 water-quality monitors in the basin. Data are being relayed during four or five ERTS orbital passes per day, which is within the design specifications of the ERTS-DCS.

Tracking and data relay satellite system configuration and tradeoff study. Volume 1: TDRS system summary, part 1

A Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) concept for service of low and medium data rate user spacecraft has been defined. The TDRS system uses two geosynchronous dual spin satellites compatible with Delta 2914 to provide command, tracking, and telemetry service between multiple low earth orbiting users and a centrally located ground station. The low data rate user service capability via each TDRS is as follows: (1) forward link at UHF: voice to one user, commands to 20 users (sequential), range and range rate service, and (2) return link at VHF: voice from one user, data from 20 users (simultaneous), range and range rate return signals. The medium data rate user service via each TDRS is as follows: (1) forward link at S band: voice or command and tracking signals to one user, and (2) return link at S band: voice, data and tracking signals from one user "order wire" for high priority service requests (implemented with an earth coverage antenna).

Tracking and data relay satellite system configuration and tradeoff study. Volume 7: Telecommunications system summary, part 1

The baseline Tracking and Data Relay Satellite telecommunication system is described. The configurations of the user spacecraft terminal and the ground based terminal are illustrated. The system service and performance summary is developed to show the link support, modes of operation, and link performance to the low data rate and medium data rate user spacecraft. The link budget calculation is included to show a typical computation for each space-to-space and space-to-ground link with the assumptions used in each calculation.

Design analysis tracking and data relay satellite simulation system

The design and development of the equipment necessary to simulate the S-band multiple access link between user spacecraft, the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, and a ground control terminal are discussed. The core of the S-band multiple access concept is the use of an Adaptive Ground Implemented Phased Array. The array contains thirty channels and provides the multiplexing and demultiplexing equipment required to demonstrate the ground implemented beam forming feature. The system provided will make it possible to demonstrate the performance of a desired user and ten interfering sources attempting to pass data through the multiple access system.

Variable beamwidth monopulse feed for Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS)

The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite with a set of circularly-polarized, amplitude-sensing monopulse patterns suitable for acquiring and tracking user spacecraft at Ku-band (15.0 GHz) is discussed. The possibility of increasing the less than 0.4-degree half-power beamwidth of the data beam to almost 1.0 degree during the acquisition phase is predicated on the use of feeds situated in the first bright-ring of the Airy diffraction structure. A complex-vector simulation equivalent to the Kirchhoff-Kottler or Franz formulations is used to compute transmitted and received field information for a dual-reflector (Cassegrain) antenna configuration in a three-dimensional space.

Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) frequency plan

The functions of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) are discussed. The primary purpose of the system is to transmit signals to and receive signals from earth orbiting user spacecraft, and provide data from which user spacecraft ephemerides can be calculated. The system configuration is described and illustrated. The frequency plan is analyzed to show the frequency coverage and the signal handling capability of the system. The characteristics of the components of the system are tabulated.

Tracking and data relay satellite system /TDRSS/

Plans for a new way of providing tracking and data acquisition support for future earth orbital missions, the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), are reviewed. This system is to become the principal support facility for all NASA R&D missions below about 5000 km altitude. Current plans call for a 2-satellite system that is to provide upwards of 85% coverage of all orbits above 200 km and 100% coverage above 1200 km.

Tracking and data relay satellite system configuration and tradeoff study, part 1. Volume 1: Summary volume

Study efforts directed at defining all TDRS system elements are summarized. Emphasis was placed on synthesis of a space segment design optimized to support low and medium data rate user spacecraft and launched with Delta 2914. A preliminary design of the satellite was developed and conceptual designs of the user spacecraft terminal and TDRS ground station were defined. As a result of the analyses and design effort it was determined that (1) a 3-axis-stabilized tracking and data relay satellite launched on a Delta 2914 provides telecommunications services considerably in excess of that required by the study statement; and (2) the design concept supports the needs of the space shuttle and has sufficient growth potential and flexibility to provide telecommunications services to high data rate users. Recommendations for further study are included.

Multipath study for a low altitude satellite utilizing a data relay satellite system

Technical considerations associated with a low altitude satellite operating in conjuction with a data relay satellite system are reported. Emphasis was placed on the quantitative characterization of multipath phenomenon and determination of power received via both the direct and earth reflection paths. Attempts were made to develop a means for estimating the magnitude and nature of the reflected power.

ATS-6 - Television Relay Using Small Terminals Experiment

The Television Relay Using Small Terminals (TRUST) Experiment was designed to advance and promote the technology of broadcasting satellites. A constant envelope television FM signal was transmitted at C band to the ATS-6 earth coverage horn and retransmitted at 860 MHz through the 9-m antenna to a low-cost direct-readout ground station. The experiment demonstrated that high-quality television and audio can be received by low-cost direct-receive ground stations. Predetection bandwidths significantly less than predicted by Carson's rule can be utilized with minimal degradation of either monochrome or color pictures. Two separate techniques of dual audio channel transmission have been demonstrated to be suitable for low-cost applications.
