Restoration of degraded images by composite gratings in a coherent optical processor.

A study has been made on restoration of degraded images utilizing spatial filtering techniques in a coherent optical processor. This study differs from other coherent approaches in that the spatial filters employed contain only composite gratings that are quite simple to produce. A general method of synthesizing the appropriate composite gratings for linearly smeared as well as multiply exposed and out-of-focus images will be presented in some detail with experimental results. The extension of the method of synthesis to other types of degradation is briefly discussed.

The program will result in the government obtaining bearings at lower costs at equivalent reliability. The bearing industry can recover lost profits during a period of reduced demand and higher costs.

Three-dimensional vector modeling and restoration of flat finite wave tank radiometric measurements

The three-dimensional vector interaction between a microwave radiometer and a wave tank was modeled. Computer programs for predicting the response of the radiometer to the brightness temperature characteristics of the surroundings were developed along with a computer program that can invert (restore) the radiometer measurements. It is shown that the computer programs can be used to simulate the viewing of large bodies of water, and is applicable to radiometer measurements received from satellites monitoring the ocean. The water temperature, salinity, and wind speed can be determined.

Image restoration consequences of the lack of a two variable fundamental theorem of algebra

It has been shown that, at least for one pair of otherwise attractive spaces of images and operators, singular convolution operators do not necessarily have nonsingular neighbors. This result is a nuisance in image restoration. It is suggested that this difficulty might be overcome if the following three conditions are satisfied: (1) a weaker constraint than absolute summability can be identified for useful operators: (2) if the z-transform of an operator has at most a finite number of zeros on the unit torus, then the inverse z-transform formula yields an inverse operator meeting the weaker constraint: and (3) operators whose z-transforms are zero in a set of real, closed curves on the unit torus have neighbors which are zero in only a finite set of points on the unit torus.

Multispectral data restoration study

A digital resampling technique for LANDSAT data is reported that incorporates a deconvolution concept to minimize spatial and radiometric degradation of data during resampling for geometric correction. A quantitative comparison of cubic convolution and digital restoration methods establishes the latter as the superior technique.

Restoration of turbulence degraded images - A review

The paper surveys techniques for recovering high resolution information from atmospheric turbulence degraded images. Several approaches to image restoration are covered, noting that the effectiveness of each technique is strongly dependent on the brightness and the angular extent of the object being observed. These approaches include: speckle holography and betelgence imaging, nonredundant aperture imaging, phase retrieval, and speckle imaging. In addition, the applications and the expected performance range of the various techniques are discussed.

On the force-restore method for prediction of ground surface temperature

The force-restore method for prediction of ground surface temperature is investigated in view of the large temperature gradient that generally exists on a bare ground surface after an extended period of evaporation. The rate equation for the 'ground surface' temperature is rederived. The result from a numerical experiment indicates that there can be significant differences in the diurnal variation of ground surface temperature depending upon its definition. The method was tested by a simulation study of two field-measured data sets at different experiment sites.

The nature of compensatory and restorative processes in the livers of animals irradiated during hypokinesia

The nature of postirradiation repair in the livers of rats irradiated during hypokinesia is investigated. Hepatocyte population counts, mitotic activity, binuclear cell content, and karyometric studies were done to ascertain the effects of combined hypokinesia and radiation. Hypokinesia is shown to change the nature and rate of post-irradiation changes in the liver, the effect varying with the timing of irradiation relative to the length of hypokinesia. It is concluded that the changes in the compensatory and restorative processes are caused by stress developed in response to isolation and restricted mobility. By changing neuroendocrine system activity, the stress stimulates cell and tissue repair mechanisms at a certain stage essential to the body's reaction of subsequent irradiation.

Mars - Paleostratigraphic restoration of buried surfaces in Tharsis montes

Volcanism in the Tharsis province of Mars occurred in several different areas and was generally continuous without large time intervals between eruptive episodes. Major lava flow units are numerous and extensive, but relatively thin. In many places, impact craters on buried surfaces project above younger flows that overlie them. A new application of crater dating methods has been developed to aid in the identification of these buried surfaces and to determine their lateral extent. The technique is especially adaptable to the Tharsis region where the stratigraphic succession of major flow units has been established by detailed geologic mapping. Knowledge of the overall stratigraphy allows correlations to be made between known and unknown surfaces by comparing their crater frequencies at diameters large enough to insure their recognition on the buried unit. The method has been applied to aid in the restoration of buried rock units and to construct a series of paleostratigraphic maps showing the sequence of major eruptive events in the Tharsis region.

Image restoration and superresolution as probes of small scale far-IR structure in star forming regions

Far-infrared continuum studies from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory are described that are designed to fully exploit the small-scale spatial information that this facility can provide. This work gives the clearest picture to data on the structure of galactic and extragalactic star forming regions in the far infrared. Work is presently being done with slit scans taken simultaneously at 50 and 100 microns, yielding one-dimensional data. Scans of sources in different directions have been used to get certain information on two dimensional structure. Planned work with linear arrays will allow us to generalize our techniques to two dimensional image restoration. For faint sources, spatial information at the diffraction limit of the telescope is obtained, while for brighter sources, nonlinear deconvolution techniques have allowed us to improve over the diffraction limit by as much as a factor of four. Information on the details of the color temperature distribution is derived as well. This is made possible by the accuracy with which the instrumental point-source profile (PSP) is determined at both wavelengths. While these two PSPs are different, data at different wavelengths can be compared by proper spatial filtering. Considerable effort has been devoted to implementing deconvolution algorithms. Nonlinear deconvolution methods offer the potential of superresolution -- that is, inference of power at spatial frequencies that exceed D lambda. This potential is made possible by the implicit assumption by the algorithm of positivity of the deconvolved data, a universally justifiable constraint for photon processes. We have tested two nonlinear deconvolution algorithms on our data; the Richardson-Lucy (R-L) method and the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM). The limits of image deconvolution techniques for achieving spatial resolution are addressed.

Far-infrared image restoration analysis of the protostellar cluster in S140

Image restoration techniques are applied to one-dimensional scans at 50 and 100 microns of the protostellar cluster in S140. These measurements resolve the surrounding nebula clearly, and Fourier methods are used to match the effective beam profiles at these wavelengths. This allows the radial distribution of temperature and dust column density to be derived at a diffraction limited spatial resolution of 23 arcsec (0.1 pc). Evidence for heating of the S140 molecular cloud by a nearby ionization front is established, and the dissociation of molecules inside the ionization front is spatially well correlated with the heating of the dust. The far-infrared spectral distribution of the three near-infrared sources within 10 arcsesc of the cluster center is presented.

Wiener restoration of sampled image data - End-to-end analysis

The Wiener filter is formulated as a function of the basic image-gathering and image-reconstruction constraints, thereby providing a method for minimizing the mean-squared error between the (continuous-input) radiance field and its restored (continuous-output) representation. This formulation of the Wiener filter is further extended to the Wiener-characteristic filter, which provides a method for explicitly specifying the desired representation. Two specific examples of Wiener filters are presented.
