Sintered Cathodes for All-Solid-State Structural Lithium-Ion Batteries

All-solid-state structural lithium ion batteries serve as both structural load-bearing components and as electrical energy storage devices to achieve system level weight savings in aerospace and other transportation applications. This multifunctional design goal is critical for the realization of next generation hybrid or all-electric propulsion systems. Additionally, transitioning to solid state technology improves upon battery safety from previous volatile architectures. This research established baseline solid state processing conditions and performance benchmarks for intercalation-type layered oxide materials for multifunctional application. Under consideration were lithium cobalt oxide and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide. Pertinent characteristics such as electrical conductivity, strength, chemical stability, and microstructure were characterized for future application in all-solid-state structural battery cathodes. The study includes characterization by XRD, ICP, SEM, ring-on-ring mechanical testing, and electrical impedance spectroscopy to elucidate optimal processing parameters, material characteristics, and multifunctional performance benchmarks. These findings provide initial conditions for implementing existing cathode materials in load bearing applications.

Solid state thermal control for spacecraft

The steady-state heat-pumping capabilities of thermoelectric devices are examined for spacecraft in earth orbit, using a simple model. Thermoelectric parameters for a standard Bi2Te, alloy are fitted with fourth-order polynomials in temperature. Parameters are used which are the average for the temperature difference across the p-n couple. Internal spacecraft temperatures are varied from 270 to 330 K, and absorbed incident radiation fluxes are varied from zero to 700 W per sq m. It is found that heat rejection can be optimized with respect to thermoelectric device and radiator fin geometries, as well as with respect to input electrical power and that these devices are most useful on the surfaces with highest incident radiant power. Maximum heat fluxes which can be pumped out of the spacecraft are on the order of 50-160 W per sq m for the various thermal environments examined. Input electrical powers corresponding to these maximum heat fluxes range from about 50-300 W per sq m. However, efficiency is greatly improved by operation at lower input-power levels.

Solid state, CCD-buried channel, television camera study and design

An investigation of an all solid state television camera design, which uses a buried channel charge-coupled device (CCD) as the image sensor, was undertaken. A 380 x 488 element CCD array was utilized to ensure compatibility with 525 line transmission and display monitor equipment. Specific camera design approaches selected for study and analysis included (a) optional clocking modes for either fast (1/60 second) or normal (1/30 second) frame readout, (b) techniques for the elimination or suppression of CCD blemish effects, and (c) automatic light control and video gain control techniques to eliminate or minimize sensor overload due to bright objects in the scene. Preferred approaches were determined and integrated into a design which addresses the program requirements for a deliverable solid state TV camera.

Charge-coupled device camera for the Galileo Jupiter Orbiter spacecraft

A slow-scan television camera called the solid-state imaging subsystem (SSI), built for the Galileo Jupiter Orbiter, is described. The SSI consists of a 1500-mm focal-length telescope coupled to a camera head housing a 800 x 800-element charge-coupled device (CCD) detector based on 'virtual-phase' charge transfer technology. The CCD detector provides broadband sensitivity over 100 times that of a comparable vidicon-tube camera, while also yielding improved resolution, linearity, geometric fidelity, and spectral range. The system noise floor is 30 electrons, which results in a dynamic range of about 3500. Saturation of the detector with 9000-A light, followed by a high-speed erasure cycle prior to exposing each image, stabilizes the detector quantum efficiency at its maximum level for wavelengths beyond 7000 A. An optical schematic diagram of the SSI is included.

The 20 GHz spacecraft IMPATT solid state transmitter

The engineering development of a solid-state transmitter amplifier operating in the 20-GHz frequency range is described. This effort involved a multitude of disciplines including IMPATT device development, circulator design, multiple-diode circuit design, and amplifier integration and test. The objective was to develop a transmitter amplifier demonstrating the feasibility of providing an efficient, reliable, lightweight solid-state transmitter to be flown on a 30 to 20 GHz communication demonstration satellite. The work was done under contract from NASA/Lewis Research Center for a period of three years. The result was the development of a GaAs IMPACT diode amplifier capable of an 11-W CW output power and a 2-dB bandwidth of 300 MHz. GaAs IMPATT diodes incorporating diamond heatsink and double-Read doping profile capable of 5.3-W CW oscillator output power and 15.5% efficiency were developed. Up to 19% efficiency was also observed for an output power level of 4.4 W. High performance circulators with a 0.2 dB inserting loss and bandwidth of 5 GHz have also been developed. These represent a significant advance in both device and power combiner circuit technologies in K-band frequencies.

Sustained arc ignition system

Circuitry for maintaining an arc or spark across a spark gap for a desired length of time is disclosed. A high voltage, direct current source is connected in series with a secondary winding of a high voltage, stepup transformer or coil and a spark gap such as a spark plug for example. The high voltage source may be on continuously or may be turned on and off by a control circuit such as a solid state switch which is, in turn, responsive to a timing device such as a set of ignition contact points or a magnetic pulse generator operating in synchronism with a spark ignition engine. The timing device also provides signals to a current switching circuit which interrupts, current flow through a primary winding of the high voltage coil at the prescribed time that a spark is desired at the spark gap.

Diode pumped solid-state laser oscillators for spectroscopic applications

The rapid improvement in diode laser pump sources has led to the recent progress in diode laser pumped solid state lasers. To date, electrical efficiencies of greater than 10 percent were demonstrated. As diode laser costs decrease with increased production volume, diode laser and diode laser array pumped solid state lasers will replace the traditional flashlamp pumped Nd:YAG laser sources. The use of laser diode array pumping of slab geometry lasers will allow efficient, high peak and average power solid state laser sources to be developed. Perhaps the greatest impact of diode laser pumped solid state lasers will be in spectroscopic applications of miniature, monolithic devices. Single-stripe diode-pumped operation of a continuous-wave 946 nm Nd:YAG laser with less than 10 m/w threshold was demonstrated. A slope efficiency of 16 percent near threshold was shown with a projected slope efficiency well above a threshold of 34 percent based on results under Rhodamine 6G dye-laser pumping. Nonlinear crystals for second-harmonic generation of this source were evaluated. The KNbO3 and periodically poled LiNbO3 appear to be the most promising.

Rapid, Nondestructive Readout From Ferroelectric Memory

Proposed devices with nondestructive readout offer attractive alternatives for rugged, solid-state memories suitable for contactless optical addressing and parallel processing and for nonvolatile analog memories. Pulses of light from lasers induce photoresponses in ferroelectric capacitors. Magnitude and polarity of response of each capacitor indicates magnitude and polarity of remanent polarization which, in turn, represents datum stored in that memory cell.

Space Qualification Studies of AOTF Devices Under the MISSE-11 Mission

The acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) devices are used in a variety of applications including hyperspectral and spectrapolarimetric based imaging. The AOTF devices provide several advantages including speed and random access to desired spectral bands and enable all-solid-state operation that are attractive for space applications. In this paper, the performance of Tellurium Dioxide (TeO 2 ) and Mercurous Bromide (Hg 2 Br 2 ) AOTF devices in space environment carried out under the NASA’s Materials International Space Station Experiments 11 (MISSE-11) mission is discussed. The purpose of the MISSE-11 mission was to study materials and devices subjected to space conditions for long term while attached to the International Space station (ISS). The TeO 2 AOTF was developed for short wavelength IR (SWIR) operation while the Hg 2 Br 2 AOTF device was developed for long wavelength IR (LWIR) operation. These devices were attached to the ISS platform for more than a year. Pre-flight and post-flight performance characterization were performed on these devices. In the case of TeO 2 AOTF, the preflight efficiency was around 87% with a center frequency at 68MHz while the post-flight efficiency was around 83%. However, the optical transmission of Hg 2 Br 2 AOTF had deteriorated considerably. The details of performance testing and analysis of both AOTF devices are discussed.
