An optical investigation of the peculiar supernova remnant CTB 80

Interference-filter photographs and optical spectrophotometry are used to investigate the optical emission associated with the peculiar supernova remnant CTB 80. Optically, the remnant consists of outlying diffuse and filamentary emission surrounding a small, central ring of filaments which are coincident with the central radio emission peak. Spectra of two filaments in the southwestern part of the remnant show strong forbidden S II emission relative to H-alpha; in conjunction with the nonthermal radio emission in this region, this suggests that the filaments are shock heated. Filaments outside the radio structure in the northeast show a similar optical spectrum and may also be a part of CTB 80. The central filaments form a well-defined shell structure in the light of forbidden O III emission 5007 A but are irregular in H-alpha showing both knots and diffuse emission.

Trapped Xe components in etched samples of the Murray (C2) and Murchison (C2) carbonaceous chondrites

Xe isotopic measurements are described. The samples analyzed were bulk chips of the Murray (C2) and Murchison (C2) carbonaceous chondrites that had been freeze-thaw disaggregated, etched with H2O2, and then split into colloidal and noncolloidal fractions using methanol. The etching removed a substantial portion of the trapped Xe and increased variations in measured isotopic ratios compared with bulk sample analyses. The Murray samples appeared to contain a binary mixture of U-Xe and H+L-Xe. The Murchison data concur with the Murray data for the heavy isotopes, but the structure at the light isotopes is obscured by spallation Xe. There is no evidence in these data for the separability of H-Xe and L-Xe. The fact that H2O2 etching removes Xe without prior demineralization supports the view that the carrier of a substantial portion of trapped Xe may reside on grain surfaces.

Composite Semiconductor Substrates

Epitaxial structure of three semiconductor materials - silicon, gallium arsenide, and cadmium telluride - makes possible integrated monolithic focal-plane arrays of photodectors. Silicon layer contains charge-coupled devices, gallium arsenide layer contains other fast electronic circuitry, and cadmium telluride layer serves as base for array of mercury cadmium telluride infrared sensors. Technique effectively combines two well-established techniques; metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition (MOCVD) and molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). Multilayer structure includes HgCdTe light sensors with Si readout devices and GaAs signal-processing circuits. CdTe layer provides base for building up HgCdTe layer.

A Mathematical Formulation of the SCOLE Control Problem. Part 2: Optimal Compensator Design

The study initiated in Part 1 of this report is concluded and optimal feedback control (compensator) design for stability augmentation is considered, following the mathematical formulation developed in Part 1. Co-located (rate) sensors and (force and moment) actuators are assumed, and allowing for both sensor and actuator noise, stabilization is formulated as a stochastic regulator problem. Specializing the general theory developed by the author, a complete, closed form solution (believed to be new with this report) is obtained, taking advantage of the fact that the inherent structural damping is light. In particular, it is possible to solve in closed form the associated infinite-dimensional steady-state Riccati equations. The SCOLE model involves associated partial differential equations in a single space variable, but the compensator design theory developed is far more general since it is given in the abstract wave equation formulation. The results thus hold for any multibody system so long as the basic model is linear.

Model reduction for flexible spacecraft with clustered natural frequencies

Two approaches to the problem of model reduction for flexible spacecraft that have proved very useful are balancing and model truncation. Furthermore, it is well known that a model representation of a lightly damped flexible structure with widely spaced natural frequencies is approximately balanced. Consequently, reduction in either coordinate system gives similar results for this case. It is important to note, however, that flexible space structures typically have clusters of closely spaced frequencies. In such cases, reduction in model coordinates can give large errors, while the error obtained using balancing is generally much smaller. A new reduction procedure which combines the best features of model and balanced reduction is therefore developed. It is more efficient than balanced reduction of the full system, as it only involves balancing those subsystems of close modes that are highly correlated, yet is shown to yield results which are essentially as good.

Reduced-order filtering for flexible space structures

There is a need for feedback control of the large flexible space structures which are going to be increasingly important in the future of the space program. These structures are very lightly damped, and vibrations may persist for a long time when the system is disturbed unless an active feedback control strategy is used to damp out the vibrations. The system is best described by a partial differential equation description, but the more common approach is to use a large set of second order differential equations, where a large number of modes must be retained if the mathematics is to provide an adequate description of the dynamical process. Sensors, such as accelerometers and rate gyros, may provide data to the feedback controller so that it may respond appropriately to control the system. The data from the sensors is not perfect, but is subject to noise, called measurement noise, and the dynamical process itself is subject to disturbances referred to as process noise. Filtering the sensor signals to remove the measurement noise, and using the resulting state estimates to control the system are investigated.

Field induced gap infrared detector

A tunable infrared detector which employs a vanishing band gap semimetal material provided with an induced band gap by a magnetic field to allow intrinsic semiconductor type infrared detection capabilities is disclosed. The semimetal material may thus operate as a semiconductor type detector with a wavelength sensitivity corresponding to the induced band gap in a preferred embodiment of a diode structure. Preferred semimetal materials include Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te, x is less than 0.15, HgCdSe, BiSb, alpha-Sn, HgMgTe, HgMnTe, HgZnTe, HgMnSe, HgMgSe, and HgZnSe. The magnetic field induces a band gap in the semimetal material proportional to the strength of the magnetic field allowing tunable detection cutoff wavelengths. For an applied magnetic field from 5 to 10 tesla, the wavelength detection cutoff will be in the range of 20 to 50 micrometers for Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te alloys with x about 0.15. A similar approach may also be employed to generate infrared energy in a desired band gap and then operating the structure in a light emitting diode or semiconductor laser type of configuration.

Velocity structure of the ring nebula around supernova 1987A

A series of high-resolution spectra of the pc-sized nebula around SN1987A are presented. The hollow, 1.7 arcsec-wide nebula has the velocity field of a ring expanding at 10.3 km/s, not that of a limb-brightened spheroid. Fainter nebulosity within 3 arcsec is expanding slightly faster, as indicated by redshifted emission from behind the SN. The geometry of the emission can be used to infer structure, provided that light travel time and recombination delays are accounted for. The analysis sets an upper limit to the velocity of the wind from the progenitor during its red supergiant (RGS) phase, and implies an RSG lifetime of less than 400,000 yr and an interval of about 20,000 yr between the end of the RSG phase and the SN explosion.

Dynamically reconfigurable optical morphological processor and its applications

An innovative optically implemented morphological processor is introduced. With the use of a large space-bandwidth-product Dammann grating and a high-speed shutter spatial light modulator, effective structuring element with large size and arbitrary shape can be constructed with dynamic reconfigurability. This reconfigurability is a major improvement over the conventional correlator-based morphological processor in which fixed holographic filters are used as structuring elements (Casasent and Botha, 1988). A novel two-dimensional thresholding photodetector array, capable of performing parallel thresholding and feedback, is utilized in this system and makes possible the implementation of many complex morphological operations requiring iterative feedbacks and full programmability. The optical architecture and the principle of operation are presented. Experimental demonstration of binary image morphological erosion, dilation, opening, and closing are also demonstrated. A technique for extending this technique to gray-scale image using thresholding decomposition technique is also discussed.

Mars Gravity and Topography Interpretations

New models of the topography of Mars and its gravity field from the Mars Global Surveyor mission are shedding new light on the structure of the planet and the state of isostatic compensation. Gravity field observations over the flat northern hemisphere plains show a number of anomalies at the 100 to 200 mGal level that have no apparent manifestation in the surface topography. We believe that these anomalies are probably the result of ancient impacts and represent regions of denser material buried beneath the outer depositional crust. Similar anomalies are also found in the region of the north polar ice cap even though a gravity anomaly resulting from the 3 km high icecap has not been uniquely identified. This leads us to speculate that the ice cap is largely compensated and is older than the timescale of isostatic compensation, about 10(exp 15) years.

Method and program product for determining a radiance field in an optical environment

A hybrid method is presented by which Monte Carlo techniques are combined with iterative relaxation techniques to solve the Radiative Transfer Equation in arbitrary one-, two- or three-dimensional optical environments. The optical environments are first divided into contiguous regions, or elements, with Monte Carlo techniques then being employed to determine the optical response function of each type of element. The elements are combined, and the iterative relaxation techniques are used to determine simultaneously the radiance field on the boundary and throughout the interior of the modeled environment. This hybrid model is capable of providing estimates of the under-water light field needed to expedite inspection of ship hulls and port facilities. It is also capable of providing estimates of the subaerial light field for structured, absorbing or non-absorbing environments such as shadows of mountain ranges within and without absorption spectral bands such as water vapor or CO.sub.2 bands.

Experimental Behavior of Fatigued Single Stiffener PRSEUS Specimens

NASA, the Air Force Research Laboratory and The Boeing Company have worked to develop new low-cost, light-weight composite structures for aircraft. A Pultruded Rod Stitched Efficient Unitized Structure (PRSEUS) concept has been developed which offers advantages over traditional metallic structure. In this concept a stitched carbon-epoxy material system has been developed with the potential for reducing the weight and cost of transport aircraft structure by eliminating fasteners, thereby reducing part count and labor. By adding unidirectional carbon rods to the top of stiffeners, the panel becomes more structurally efficient. This combination produces a more damage tolerant design. This document describes the results of experimentation on PRSEUS specimens loaded in unidirectional compression in fatigue and to failure.

Hard X-Ray Footprint Source Sized

RHESSI has detected compact hard (25 - 100 keV) X-ray sources that are <4 arcseconds (FWHM) in extent for certain flares (Dennis and Pernak (2009). These sources are believed to be at magnetic loop footpoints that are known from observations at other wavelengths to be very small. Flare ribbons seen in the W with TRACE, for example, are approx. 1 arcsecond in width, and white light flares show structure at the approx. 1 arcsecond level. However, Kontar and Jeffrey (2010) have shown that the measured extent should be >6 arcseconds, even if the X-ray emitting thick-target source is point-like. This is because of the strong albedo contribution in the measured energy range for a source located at the expected altitude of 1 Mm near the top of the chromosphere. This discrepancy between observations and model predictions may indicate that the source altitude is significantly lower than assumed or that the RHESSI image reconstruction procedures are not sensitive to the more diffuse albedo patch in the presence of a strong compact source. Results will be presented exploring the latter possibility using the Pixon image reconstruction procedure and other methods based on visibilities.
