Multidimensional coherent spectroscopy of light-driven states and their collective modes in multiband superconductors

We present a comprehensive theory of light-controlled multiband superconductivity, and apply it to predict distinctive signatures of light-driven superconducting (SC) states in terahertz multidimensional coherent spectroscopy (THz-MDCS) experiments. We first derive gauge-invariant Maxwell-Bloch equations for multiband BCS superconductors with spatial fluctuations. We consider driving electromagnetic fields determined self-consistently by Maxwell's equations. By calculating the THz-MDCS spectra measured experimentally in the clean SC limit, we identify unique signatures of finite-momentum Cooper-pairing states that live longer than the laser pulse. They are controlled by a pair of THz laser pulses with well-defined relative phase (pulse pair). The pseudospin oscillators that describe the properties of these SC states are parametrically driven by both finite-momentum Cooper pairing and by time oscillations of the order-parameter relative phase. We show that such strong parametric driving leads to drastic changes in the THz-MDCS spectral shape from the predictions of third-order nonlinear susceptibility calculations. These spectral changes strongly depend on the interband-to-intraband interaction ratio and on the collective modes of the light-driven state. For negligible interband interaction, the spectra show a transition with increasing field, from traditional pump-probe, four-wave-mixing, and third-harmonic generation peaks determined by the laser frequency to sidebands determined by the excitations of the driven system. These sidebands emerge from difference-frequency Raman processes in the nonequilibrium SC state. For interband couplings weaker than the intraband pairing, we show that the Leggett phase collective mode leads to harmonic sidebands around the traditional pump-probe peaks. Additional Higgs collective mode peaks result from light-induced inversion-symmetry breaking in a thin-film geometry. For strong interband coupling, we find a transition from a nonequilibrium finite Cooper-pair momentum state characterized by hybrid-Higgs amplitude mode peaks in THz-MDCS spectra to a driven state identified experimentally by the emergence of Floquet-type sidebands at bi-Higgs frequencies. Those dominant bi-Higgs-frequency satellites are manifestations of a new order parameter relative phase collective mode that characterizes the nonequilibrium SC state. The predicted interaction- and field-dependent transitions in the spectral profile allow us to propose THz-MDCS experiments for quantum tomography of light-driven superconductivity.

Fast attenuation of high-frequency acoustic waves in bicontinuous nanoporous gold

We studied the formation and attenuation of GHz elastic waves in free-standing nanoporous gold films by MeV ultrafast electron diffraction and finite element simulations. By tracing the evolution of the high frequency acoustic waves in time domain, we found that the bicontinuous nanoporous structure in nanoporous gold films results in three-dimensionally acoustic response with low coherence, leading to fast attenuation of the elastic waves in comparison with solid gold films. The morphologically dominated dynamics indicates the nanoporosity plays an important role in the high-frequency acoustic energy relaxation, which shines a light on the applications of dealloyed nanoporous materials in nanodevices and sensors as GHz and THz acoustic filters and dampers.

Local Oscillator Sub-Systems for Array Receivers in the 1-3 THz Range

Recent results from the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) on the Herschel Space Telescope have confirmed the usefulness of high resolution spectroscopic data for a better understanding of our Universe. This paper will explore the current status of tunable local oscillator sources with emphasis on building a multi-pixel LO subsystem for the scientifically important CII line around 1908 GHz. Recent results have shown that over 50 microwatts of output power at 1.9 THz are possible with an optimized single pixel LO chain. These power levels are now sufficient to pump array receivers in this frequency range. Further power enhancement can be obtained by cooling the chain to 120 K or by utilizing in-phase power combining technology.

Terahertz parametric amplification as a reporter of exciton condensate dynamics

Condensates are a hallmark of emergence in quantum materials with superconductors and charge density wave as prominent examples. An excitonic insulator (EI) is an intriguing addition to this library, exhibiting spontaneous condensation of electron-hole pairs. However, condensate observables can be obscured through parasitic coupling to the lattice. Time-resolved terahertz (THz) spectroscopy can disentangle such obscurants through measurement of the quantum dynamics. We target Ta 2 NiSe 5 , a putative room-temperature EI where electron-lattice coupling dominates the structural transition (T c = 326 K), hindering identification of excitonic correlations. A pronounced increase in the THz reflectivity manifests following photoexcitation and exhibits a BEC-like temperature dependence. This occurs well below the T c , suggesting a novel approach to monitor exciton condensate dynamics. Nonetheless, dynamic condensate-phonon coupling remains as evidenced by peaks in the enhanced reflectivity spectrum at select infrared-active phonon frequencies. This indicates that parametric reflectivity enhancement arises from phonon squeezing, validated using Fresnel-Floquet theory and density functional calculations. In conclusion, our results highlight that coherent dynamics can drive parametric stimulated emission with concomitant possibilities, including entangled THz photon generation.

A 163 micron laser heterodyne radiometer for OH

A 163 micron (1.836 THz) radiometer developed for airplane and/or balloon platforms is described. The laser local oscillator is a CO2 pumped methanol laser operating at a frequency which is approx. 1 GHz from the J = 3/2 - 1/2 transition of OH. The laser is used directly as a local oscillator or is translated in frequency to closer coincidence with the OH emission, depending on achieved detector IF bandwidth. Frequency translation techniques which are described are diode mixing and a method of single sideband generation using an external Stark modulated gas cell. The photoconductive mixer used is a strained Ge crystal, doped with Ga, originally used as an incoherent detector. The uniaxial strain on the Ga doped Ge crystal shifts the threshold for photoconduction from 100/cm to frequencies as low as 50/cm. These detectors are currently being characterized as mixers in the laboratory. Of particular interest are the effect of local oscillator power and strain on IF, bandwidth detector impedance, and conversion loss. Preliminary results of these tests are described and compared with theorectical expectations.

Direct Measurement of Terahertz Conductivity in a Gated Monolayer Semiconductor

Two-dimensional semiconductors and their moiré superlattices have emerged as important platforms for investigating correlated electrons. However, many key properties of these systems, such as the frequency-dependent conductivity, remain experimentally inaccessible because of the mesoscopic sample size. Here we report a technique to directly measure the complex conductivity of electrostatically gated two-dimensional semiconductors in the terahertz frequency range. Applying this technique to a WSe2 monolayer encapsulated in hBN, we observe a clear Drude-like response between 0.1 and 1 THz, in a density range challenging to access even in DC transport. Our work opens a new avenue for studying tunable van der Waals heterostructures using terahertz spectroscopy.

Light quantum control of persisting Higgs modes in iron-based superconductors

The Higgs mechanism, i.e., spontaneous symmetry breaking of the quantum vacuum, is a cross-disciplinary principle, universal for understanding dark energy, antimatter and quantum materials, from superconductivity to magnetism. Unlike one-band superconductors (SCs), a conceptually distinct Higgs amplitude mode can arise in multi-band, unconventional superconductors via strong interband Coulomb interaction, but is yet to be accessed. Here we discover such hybrid Higgs mode and demonstrate its quantum control by light in iron-based high-temperature SCs. Using terahertz (THz) two-pulse coherent spectroscopy, we observe a tunable amplitude mode coherent oscillation of the complex order parameter from coupled lower and upper bands. The nonlinear dependence of the hybrid Higgs mode on the THz driving fields is distinct from any known SC results: we observe a large reversible modulation of resonance strength, yet with a persisting mode frequency. Together with quantum kinetic modeling of a hybrid Higgs mechanism, distinct from charge-density fluctuations and without invoking phonons or disorder, our result provides compelling evidence for a light-controlled coupling between the electron and hole amplitude modes assisted by strong interband quantum entanglement. Such light-control of Higgs hybridization can be extended to probe many-body entanglement and hidden symmetries in other complex systems.

Terahertz nano-imaging of metal-insulator transition in Cd 2 Os 2 O 7

The osmate pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 supports an antiferromagnet insulator ground state with an all-in/all-out (AIAO) spin ordering at low temperature. Above 225 K, Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 becomes a paramagnetic metal whereas the mechanism of this metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) remains elusive. In this letter, we use cryogenic near-field technique operating at terahertz frequencies to study the evolution of low-energy response across the MIT. We observed a systematic variation of the magnitude of nano-THz signal across the transition, consistent with the trend in the direct-current conductivity. Conducting domain walls that dominate the nano-scale landscape of the conductivity of a closely related AIAO system Nd 2 Ir 2 O 7 are not apparent in Cd 2 Os 2 O 7

Frequency-independent optical spin injection in Weyl semimetals

We demonstrate that in Weyl semimetals, the momentum-space helical spin texture can couple to the chirality of the Weyl node to generate a frequency-independent optical spin injection. This frequency-independence is rooted in the topology of the Weyl node. Since the helicity and the chirality are always locked for Weyl nodes, the injected spin from a pair of Weyl nodes always add up, implying no symmetry requirements for Weyl semimetals. Finally, we show that such frequency-independent spin injection is robust against multiband corrections and lattice-regularization effect and capable of realizing all-optical magnetization switching in the THz regime.

Tapering-enhanced high-efficiency THz waveguide oscillator

Using a waveguide in a THz FEL has been shown to maximize the coupling and enable efficient extraction of relativistic electron beam energy from a single passage through a tapered helical undulator. An oscillator configuration can further boost energy extraction above the single-pass limits and open the door toward very high average power THz sources. Embedding the undulator in an oscillator cavity is particularly useful in combination with high repetition rate electron sources, even if at reduced peak brightness, since recycling a fraction of the radiation as an intense seed can compensate for lower single-pass gain. In this paper, we investigate the efficiency scaling of a tapering-enhanced waveguide oscillator, showcasing its capability for frequency-tuning operation and high-efficiency operation at different wavelengths. Using a thermionic-driven beamline equipped with compression elements, numerical start-to-end simulation results indicate a 16% efficiency at 200 GHz and a 2.1% efficiency at 1.5 THz, resulting in kW-level average power out-coupled in radiation pulses with few hundred μ J energy and tens of MW peak power. Raman and Terahertz Spectroscopy of Low-Frequency Chiral Phonons in Amino Acids

Chiral phonons are mirror-symmetric vibrations with nonzero angular momenta that correspond to twisting and rotational motions of multiple atoms. In chiral crystals, these include low-energy terahertz (THz)-range vibrations of the molecular segments involving dozens of atoms with energies sensitive to molecular chirality. Here, we present spectral signatures of chiral phonons in circularly polarized Raman optical activity (ROA) spectra from enantiomers of amino acid crystals. Along with complementary THz circular dichroism (TCD) measurements, our ROA data reveal several vibrational bands in enantiomers of valine, alanine, tyrosine, and proline between 30 and 150 cm –1 (∼1–4.5 THz) that exhibit opposite intensities. Density functional theory calculations confirm their assignment to twisting and shearing molecular motions. The simultaneous registration of chiral phonon modes by ROA and TCD demonstrates the necessity of these complementary techniques to identify complex mirror-asymmetric vibrational modes and offers new insights into their interactions with circularly polarized light.

Observation of hydrodynamic plasmons and energy waves in graphene

Thermally excited electrons and holes form a quantum-critical Dirac fluid in ultraclean graphene and their electrodynamic responses are described by a universal hydrodynamic theory. The hydrodynamic Dirac fluid can host intriguing collective excitations distinctively different from those in a Fermi liquid. Here we report the observation of the hydrodynamic plasmon and energy wave in ultraclean graphene. In this study, we use the on-chip terahertz (THz) spectroscopy technique to measure the THz absorption spectra of a graphene microribbon as well as the propagation of the energy wave in graphene close to charge neutrality. We observe a prominent high-frequency hydrodynamic bipolar-plasmon resonance and a weaker low-frequency energy-wave resonance of the Dirac fluid in ultraclean graphene. The hydrodynamic bipolar plasmon is characterized by the antiphase oscillation of massless electrons and holes in graphene. The hydrodynamic energy wave is an electron-hole sound mode with both charge carriers oscillating in phase and moving together. The spatial–temporal imaging technique shows that the energy wave propagates at a characteristic speed of $V_f$ / $ \sqrt2$ near the charge neutrality. Our observations open new opportunities to explore collective hydrodynamic excitations in graphene systems.

Avoided Level Crossing and Entangled States of Interacting Hydrogen Molecules Detected by the Quantum Superposition Microscope

Pump–probe measurements by ultrashort THz pulses can be used to excite and follow the coherence dynamics in the time domain of single hydrogen molecules (H 2 ) in the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). By tailoring the resonance frequency through the sample bias, we identified two spectral signatures of the interactions among multiple H 2 molecules. First, the avoided level crossing featured by energy gaps ranging from 20 to 80 GHz was observed because of the level repulsion between two H 2 molecules. Second, the tip can sense the signal of H 2 outside the junction through the projective measurement on the H 2 inside the junction, owing to the entangled states created through the interactions. A dipolar-type interaction was integrated into the tunneling two-level system model of H 2 , enabling accurate reproduction of the observed behaviors. Furthermore, our results obtained by the quantum superposition microscope reveal the intricate quantum mechanical interplay among H 2 molecules and additionally provide a 2D platform to investigate unresolved questions of amorphous materials.

Method and apparatus for low-loss signal transmission

The present invention relates to the field of radio-frequency (RF) waveguides. More specifically, the present invention pertains to a method and apparatus that provides ultra-low-loss RF waveguide structures targeted between approximately 300 GHz and approximately 30 THz. The RF waveguide includes a hollow core and a flexible honeycomb, periodic-bandgap structure surrounding the hollow core. The flexible honeycomb, periodic-bandgap structure is formed of a plurality of tubes formed of a dielectric material such as of low-loss quartz, polyethylene, or high-resistivity silicon. Using the RF waveguide, a user may attach a terahertz signal source to the waveguide and pass signals through the waveguide, while a terahertz signal receiver receives the signals.
