Implementation of High Temperature and Pressure fluid property interpolation tables

This document describes the use of module property_interpolate by John Doherty (Doherty,2006). The document “Fast Lookup of CO 2 Properties” describes the numerical details associated with lookup table. Rajeh Pawar modified property_interpolate for easier implementation in the FEHM code. George Zyvoloski modified the package to produce tables for water and air at very high temperatures and pressures. He also modified the auxiliary codes(drivers) to use newer datasets from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. We note here that within the files associated with FEHM there three property_interpolate modules. They are interpolate_2a.f90 (water), interpolate_2b.f90 (air) , and interpolate_2c.f90(CO 2 ). The interpolate_2c module is different than the earlier module produced by Rajeh Pawar in that it includes high temperature and pressure data. While FEHM has a number of fluid physics modules, this document will describe only the software and algorithms associated with water, water vapor, and heat (WH).

Optimization of Canister Loading Patterns in Dual Purpose Canisters for Criticality Suppression

This report documents work performed in support of the US Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition, Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology, under work breakdown structure element 1.08.01.03.05, “Direct Disposal of Dual Purpose Canisters.” In particular, this report fulfills milestone M3SF-22PN010305094, “Application of AI/ML techniques to optimize DPC loading,” within work package SF-22PN01030509, “Direct Disposal of Dual Purpose Canisters - PNNL.” This report continues the process of examining the potential for using loading optimization as a disposal criticality suppression technique. This latest update to the report added: 1. A validation of the artificial neural network (ANN) reactivity prediction tool against as-loaded dual-purpose canisters from the UNF-ST&DARDS database 2. Refinement of the algorithm to incorporate an additional DPC design to improve the predictions 3. Investigation of a storage and transportation focused loading optimization algorithm. A key result from this year’s work is that the ANN performance was significantly improved by including the additional model for the NUHOMS canisters and it is apparent that fuel type specific modeling considerations should be incorporated into the ANN in future work. The GRASP-enabled adaptive multi-objective memetic algorithm with partial clustering (GAMMA-PC) algorithm was evaluated as a tool for storage and transportation oriented optimization. The GAMMA-PC optimization routine considers decay heat at loading, the time between loading and when the canister is eligible for transportation and minimizes the number of casks loaded. Future work will develop a dose minimization optimization routine.

Low Noise Frequency-Domain Multiplexing of TES Bolometers Using SQUIDs at Sub-Kelvin Temperature

Digital Frequency-Domain Multiplexing (DfMux) is a technique that uses MHz superconducting resonators and Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) arrays to read out sets of transition edge sensors. DfMux has been used by several Cosmic Microwave Background experiments, including most recently POLARBEAR-2 and SPT-3 G with multiplexing factors as high as 68, and is the baseline readout technology for the planned satellite mission LiteBIRD. Here, we present recent work focused on improving DfMux readout noise, reducing parasitic impedance, and improving sensor operation. We have achieved a substantial reduction in stray impedance by integrating the sensors, resonators, and SQUID array onto a single-carrier board operated at 250 mK. This also drastically simplifies the packaging of the cryogenic components and leads to better-controlled crosstalk. We demonstrate a low readout noise level of 8.6 pA/Hz1 1/2 , which was made possible by operating the SQUID array at a reduced temperature and with a low dynamic impedance. This is a factor of two improvement compared to the achieved readout noise level in currently operating Cosmic Microwave Background experiments using DfMux and represents a critical step toward maturation of the technology for the next generation of instruments.

Assessment of Critical Experiment Benchmark Applicability to a Large-Capacity HALEU Transportation Package Concept

This work presents an assessment of the applicability of existing benchmark critical experiments to the criticality safety code validation for a large-capacity high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) transportation package concept. Numerous next-generation nuclear reactor designs require HALEU fuel, which is characterized by an enrichment between 5 and 20 wt% 235 U. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has proposed to recover and downblend highly enriched uranium from DOE-owned used nuclear fuel to accelerate the demonstration of commercially viable microreactor technologies. One element of the infrastructure needed to demonstrate HALEU-fueled reactors is the ability to safely transport enriched product to be used for fuel fabrication. There is uncertainty as to whether existing critical benchmark experiment data are sufficient to support criticality safety code validation for HALEU transportation applications. The anticipated chemical form of the HALEU in the proposed transportation concept is UO 2 with 20 wt% 235 U/U. The concept uses a combination of an existing transportation packaging design and a novel basket design, including borated aluminum flux traps. The basket provides space for 18 reusable, stainless steel canisters that contain the HALEU. In 10 CFR 71, normal conditions of transport (NCTs) and hypothetical accident conditions (HACs) are defined for fissile material transportation packages. NCT and HAC KENO-VI models of the transportation package were developed using the Standardized Computer Analyses for Licensing Evaluation (SCALE) 6.2.3 computer code package, and optimum moderation conditions were determined using the SCALE SAMPLER sequence. The SCALE Tools for Sensitivity and Uncertainty Analysis Methodology Implementation (TSUNAMI) sequences were then used to compare the neutronic characteristics of 1584 International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project benchmark critical experiments with the NCT and HAC HALEU transportation models. The TSUNAMI integral correlation coefficient c k was the criterion used to rank neutronic similarity. Thirty-four experiments were identified as similar (c k ≥ 0.9) to the NCT model, and 55 experiments were identified as similar to the HAC model. Hundreds of experiments were also identified as at least marginally similar (c k ≥ 0.8) to both models. The results indicate that additional critical experiments are unlikely to be needed to support HALEU transportation criticality safety analyses for package concepts similar to the concept package analyzed.

The developments in modifying functionality of lignin and its application in biocomposites

With the advancement of sustainable material innovations, renewable natural biopolymers are gradually replacing traditional metal and petroleum-based synthetic materials due to their environmental friendliness, biodegradability, and economic advantages. Lignin, the second most abundant natural aromatic polymer in the plant kingdom, has emerged as a key candidate raw material for the development of green polymer systems because of its unique phenylpropane unit network structure, high carbon content, and rich functional group characteristics. However, challenges such as the inherent structural complexity, chemical inertness, and uneven molecular weight distribution of lignin limit its direct application. By employing modification strategies such as chemical functionalization and physical regulation, researchers can precisely control its reactivity, thermal stability, and interfacial compatibility, enabling the preparation of high-performance lignin-based functional composites. Here, this paper systematically reviews the principles and methodological advancements in lignin's multi-dimensional modification technology. It analyzes the mechanisms by which various chemical and physical modification techniques enhance the mechanical properties, functional responsiveness, and environmental adaptability of materials, and discusses innovative applications in fields such as intelligent packaging, biomedical materials, and energy storage devices. Furthermore, this review addresses the key challenges encountered in the high-value transformation of lignin, with the aim of offering a theoretical framework and technical pathway for the transformative development of lignin from agricultural and forestry by-products to functional material platforms.

ESS-DIVE Unoccupied Aerial Systems (UAS) Reporting Format v1

Here we present documentation of the ESS-DIVE reporting format for Unoccupied Aerial System (UAS) data and metadata. This reporting format provides guidance to data contributors on how to store data to maximize their discoverability, facilitate their efficient reuse, and add value to individual datasets. For data users, the reporting format will better allow data repositories to optimize data search and extraction, and more readily integrate similar data into harmonized synthesis products. The reporting format provides templates and guidance for the reporting of metadata for UAS experimental campaigns, individual flights, platform and sensor description. To improve data access and discoverability, the reporting format proposes a data description scheme of Levels based on the degree of processing, where Level 0 includes raw data, through to Level 3 being derived data end products. A range of examples of data types for each Level are given, with suggested file naming schemes. The reporting format presented here is intended to form a foundation for future development that will accommodate new UAS technologies and approaches to data access and use in the future. The reporting format documentation is maintained and updated on the ESS-DIVE Community Space GitHub at https://github.com/ess-dive-community/essdive-uas. This data package is the first published version of this reporting format, and comprises a zip file of the complete content of https://github.com/ess-dive-community/essdive-uas v1.0. The zip contains the reporting format description, instructions and variable definitions in GitHub markdown language (*.md) and metadata templates in csv format. The reporting format is designed to be compatible with other ESS-DIVE formats, and it is specifically recommended that this reporting format be used in conjunction with the File-level metadata (FLMD) and comma separated values (csv) reporting formats for submission to the ESS-DIVE repository.

Novel Harsh Environment Materials and Fabrication Techniques for Wireless Sensor Applications (Final Report)

The overarching goal of this project is to establish a center of excellence program at the University of Maine that is focused on Harsh Environmental Materials and Fabrication Techniques for Wireless Sensor Applications. UMaine is well-positioned to build on previous successes in the areas of materials science research and sensor engineering. Since 1980, the Laboratory for Surface Science & Technology (LASST) has been a very successful interdisciplinary UMaine research center with a well-established infrastructure to investigate surfaces, interfaces, thin films, and micro/nano-fabrication. This infrastructure established through NSF, DOE, DOD, NASA, the State of Maine, and industry includes (i) a 3,500 ft2 clean room with nano/microfabrication and photolithography instrumentation, (ii) thin film synthesis, processing and characterization, (iii) surface and thin film analytical chemistry tools, and (iv) device packaging, electronic testing, wireless devices, system fabrication, and sensor test facilities. This strong foundation is the basis for a planned significant growth in R&D capacity currently underway. To that end, since the start of this project in the Fall of 2019, LASST has undergone a transition to become a new interdisciplinary center at UMaine, named the Frontier Institute for Research in Sensor Technologies (FIRST). This new focus represents a commitment and investment by UMaine that aligns with the proposed DOE-EPSCoR theme, capitalizing on the state-of-the-art instrumentation to form an energized group of faculty and students pursuing advances in sensor materials, devices, and applications.

This work was performed to fulfill Level 2 Milestone M2SF-24OR010201024, “FY23 ORNL Testing on Sibling Pins,” within work package SF-24OR01020102 and is an update to the work reported in M2SF-23OR010201024, M2SF-22OR010201047, M2SF-21OR010201032, M2SF-19ORO010201026, and M2SF-19OR010201028. As a part of the DOE NE High Burnup Spent Fuel Data Project, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is performing destructive examinations (DEs) of high burnup (HBU) (>45 GWd/MTU) spent nuclear fuel (SNF) rods from the North Anna Nuclear Power Station operated by Dominion Energy. The SNF rods, called sister rods or sibling rods, are all HBU and include four different kinds of fuel rod cladding: standard Zircaloy-4 (Zirc-4), low-tin Zirc-4, ZIRLO, and M5. The DEs are being conducted to obtain a baseline of the HBU rods’ condition before they are sent to dry storage and are focused on gaining an understanding of overall SNF rod strength and durability. Composite fuel and defueled cladding will be tested to derive material properties. Although the data generated can be used for multiple purposes, one primary goal for obtaining the post-irradiation examination data and the associated measured mechanical properties is to support SNF dry storage licensing and relicensing activities by (1) addressing identified knowledge gaps and (2) enhancing the technical basis for post-storage transportation, handling, and subsequent disposition. This report documents the status of the ORNL Phase 1 DE activities related to the mechanical testing of selected sister rods in Phase 1 of the sister rod test program. This appendix provides images of the segments broken in four-point bending (4PB).

Silicon Carbide Inverter for Off-Road Heavy-Duty Applications: The Importance of Thermal and Thermomechanical Design in Power Electronics Packaging

Electrification of drivetrain systems is now seen as a major opportunity by the transportation industry across the globe to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and revolutionize the travel patterns of millions of people. The cumulative number of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles (EVs) sold in the United States has now surpassed 2 million in 2021, according to the International Energy Agency. The introduction of EVs in different classes of passenger vehicles and the continued drop in prices spurred by government incentives have attracted the attention of consumers despite certain barriers, such as higher initial cost and range anxiety. In the United States, the EV market share is now growing at an exponential pace, with the domestic automakers allocating a lion's share of new and future car sales to EVs. Additionally, different market studies project decreasing cost and rising sales of medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks. Although electrification initiatives are strongly pursued in the on-road passenger vehicle market, off-highway sectors, such as construction, mining, and agriculture, are also gradually implementing electric drivetrain technologies in their machineries. As EVs grow in popularity on a global scale, innovative drivetrain technologies must meet the increasing energy demand by significantly increasing system efficiency.
