Flat-plate drag measurements with vortex generators in turbulent boundary layer

Direct drag measurements were obtained on a flat plate with a spanwise row of vortex generators near the leading edge, to produce an array of stream wise vortices within the approaching turbulent boundary layer. The object was to explore the possibility of modifying the large scale structure of the boundary layer through embedded longitudinal vortices with a view to obtaining a reduction in wall shear. Both obstacle and vane type vortex generators were tested at free stream velocities 40 ft/sec to 130 ft/sec corresponding to plate length Reynolds no. 0.3 million to 0.8 million with a nominal boundary layer thickness of approximately 0.6 in. at the leading edge. A few vortex generator configurations were tested both on and off the plate to measure the total drag as well as the plate drag alone. The obstacle type devices reduced the plate drag, indicating that the wake momentum defect predominated even in the presence of streamwise vortices. The vane type vortex generators however always increased the plate drag.

Evaluation of trends in wheat yield models

Trend terms in models for wheat yield in the U.S. Great Plains for the years 1932 to 1976 are evaluated. The subset of meteorological variables yielding the largest adjusted R(2) is selected using the method of leaps and bounds. Latent root regression is used to eliminate multicollinearities, and generalized ridge regression is used to introduce bias to provide stability in the data matrix. The regression model used provides for two trends in each of two models: a dependent model in which the trend line is piece-wise continuous, and an independent model in which the trend line is discontinuous at the year of the slope change. It was found that the trend lines best describing the wheat yields consisted of combinations of increasing, decreasing, and constant trend: four combinations for the dependent model and seven for the independent model.

A translational registration system for LANDSAT image segments

The use of satellite images obtained from various dates is essential for crop forecast systems. In order to make possible a multitemporal analysis, it is necessary that images belonging to each acquisition have pixel-wise correspondence. A system developed to obtain, register and record image segments from LANDSAT images in computer compatible tapes is described. The translational registration of the segments is performed by correlating image edges in different acquisitions. The system was constructed for the Burroughs B6800 computer in ALGOL language.

Responsibilities and practical limitations in the operation of an astronomical data center

The operation of an astronomical data center requires that many decisions be made concerning the handling of the astronomical catalogs and data distributed. Should a data center be, as Wilkins (1977) described it, passive, in that catalogs and data are collected and distributed blackbox-wise upon request, or should a data center be active and have experts in various fields to scrutinize, correct, reformat, and document data where necessary. These questions will be addressed and illustrated by describing the current operations and future goals of the Astronomical Data Center at NASA/GSFC.

Post-instability in continuous systems. I - Failure of differentiability of solutions in continuum mechanics

It is pointed out that mathematical models of continua are based on certain assumptions regarding functions which must be at least piece-wise differentiable. The assumption about smoothness of the functions makes it possible to use the mathematical technique of differentiable equations. However, this artificial mathematical limitation follows neither from the principles of mechanics nor from the definition of a continuum. The price paid for such a mathematical convenience is instability (in the class of smooth functions) of the solutions to the corresponding governing equations in some regions of the parameters. A new mathematical technique should, therefore, be developed to describe the solutions which are not necessarily differentiable. The present investigation is concerned with the criteria of applicability of the classical models of continua from the view point of stability of the corresponding solutions, postinstability models derived by reformulation of the original models, and postinstability models in enlarged classes of functions.

Heating measurements on Space Shuttle Orbiter models with differentially deflected elevons

The phase-change paint technique was used to make heat-transfer measurements on five Space Shuttle Orbiter models with differentially-deflected elevons. The outboard elevons were deflected windward through an angle delta when the inboard elevons were deflected through an angle - 2delta, where delta = 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 deg. The models were tested in air at Mach 6 and Mach 10 with two different flow conditions at each Mach number. Each test was run at three angles of attack; 20, 28, and 35 deg. This study was restricted to the windward side of the wing/elevons area. Multiple chord-wise streaks of high heating often occurred on the wings and sometimes extended to localized spots of high heating on the windward-deflected elevons. The extent of heating was a function of angle of attack and test conditions, but in general differential deflection of the elevons affected the wing heat-transfer coefficient on the order of 40 percent or less whereas the windward elevon heat-transfer coefficient was a function of the deflection angle and could be many times the value determined for the undeflected elevon.

Study of spectral/radiometric characteristics of the thematic mapper for land use applications

The previous characterization of scan-related low-frequency noise was confirmed and extended through analysis of reflective-band data from another nighttime acquisition. Amplitude and phase relationships of the level shifts were determined for each detector in each of free full frames. Analysis of scan-direction-related signal droop effects in nighttime data from the reflective bands was begun with encouraging initial observations. Also, an effort to characterize high-frequency noise in the reflective bands through Fourier analysis of nighttime data was initiated. Recommendations are made relative to the choice of radiometric calibration constants in the thematic mapper image processing system for the routine processing of TM data. Non-linear (piece-wise linear) calibration curves are recommended.

Method and apparatus for simulating gravitational forces on a living organism

A method and apparatus for simulating gravitational forces on a living organism wherein a series of negative pressures are externally applied to successive length-wise sections of a lower limb of the organism. The pressures decreasing progressively with distance of said limb sections from the heart of the organism. A casing defines a chamber adapted to contain the limb of the organism and is rigidified to resist collapse upon the application of negative pressures to the interior of the chamber. Seals extend inwardly from the casing for effective engagement with the limb of the organism and, in cooperation with the limb, subdivide the chamber into a plurality of compartments each in negative pressure communicating relation with the limb.

The ESA activities on future launchers

A future launcher development scenario depends on many assumptions, such as the impetus provided by the probability of future missions, and the political willingness of member states to undertake future developments. Because of the long timescale implied by a coherent launcher development, a step-wise approach within an overall future launcher development plan appears essential. The definition of development steps allows the launcher developments to be adapted to the driving external forces, so that no possible opportunity to Europe in the space launch business is missed out because of improper planning on the absence of a long term goal. The launcher senario, to be presented in 1985, forms part of Europe's overall STS plan for the future. This overall STS plan is one product of the complete STS LTPP, a first draft of which should exist by 1985, and which will be updated regularly to take into account the changing political and economic perspectives.

Spectral methods for solution of the boundary-layer equations

The basic principles of spectral methods are reviewed, and their application to the two-dimensional incompressible boundary-layer equations is discussed. It is shown that spectral collocation methods provide an accuracy sufficient for engineering applications on extremely coarse grids, and the machine time requirements are small. Although for a given stream-wise discretization, the fully spectral scheme requires more computational effort than the marching scheme, the higher accuracy of the former yields a large net gain in efficiency when considered at equivalent error levels.

Direction Judgement Errors in Perspective Displays

Spatial information transfer characteristics of perspective situation displays were investigated by having eight subjects judge the directions of displayed targets relative to a fixed position in the center of computer generated perspective scenes. Their errors in judging azimuth angles varied sinusoidally with the azimuth of the targets. Errors alternated between clockwise and counterclock wise from one direction quadrant to the next. As the perspective geometry was varied between telephoto lens and wide angle lens views, the direction of error gradually reversed in all quadrants. The results can be explained by systematic differences between the three-dimensional stimulus angles and the perspective projections of those angles onto the display screen.

Solar cosmic ray produced neon in lunar soils and their implication for gas-rich meteorite studies

Characteristic neon isotopic ratios, produced due to solar cosmic ray spallation (SCR) in lunar soils, are useful in deciphering and estimating the relative contributions of SCR and GCR spallation. To delineate these features, etched mineral grains from mature and immature lunar soils (14148 and 61221 respectively) were analyzed using mass spectrometry. The SF-Ne composition deduced in this work agrees with that obtained from earlier etched lunar pyroxene studies. The data points for mature soil 14148 define a line which significantly deviates from the 61221 tie line. This deviation is attributed to the presence of SCR spallation component. In this context, neon isotopic compositions (step-wise heating) in Pantar and Leighton dark portions were studied and compared with that of Fayetteville. The meteorite data points deviate significantly from the tie line joining SF-Ne and GCR (pyroxene) end points. This deviation is attributed to SCR-spallation in gas-rich chondrites.

On the divergence of the Hall current in the westward traveling surge

Recent observations suggest that the Hall current tends to be highly divergence-free in the westward traveling surge. It is shown in a model calculation that the blockage of the Hall current from closure along field lines leads to a significant reduction of the divergence of the Hall current, but is not divergence-free. The westward electrojet in this models is found to rotate counterclock wise around the leading edge of the surge and merge into the eastward electrojet. The difference in strength between the two electrojets at the head of the surge goes into the upward field-aligned current. It is also shown that the conductivity enhanced by the discrete auroral precipitation does not contribute to the divergence of the Hall current, provided that the electric fields are coplanar along a field line. The above results strongly suggest that the Hall current tends to be highly divergence-free in regions of bright auroral forms, especially in the westward traveling surge.

Heat transfer characteristics within an array of impinging jets. Effects of crossflow temperature relative to jet temperature

Spanwise average heat fluxes, resolved in the streamwise direction to one stream-wise hole spacing were measured for two-dimensional arrays of circular air jets impinging on a heat transfer surface parallel to the jet orifice plate. The jet flow, after impingement, was constrained to exit in a single direction along the channel formed by the jet orifice plate and heat transfer surface. The crossflow originated from the jets following impingement and an initial crossflow was present that approached the array through an upstream extension of the channel. The regional average heat fluxes are considered as a function of parameters associated with corresponding individual spanwise rows within the array. A linear superposition model was employed to formulate appropriate governing parameters for the individual row domain. The effects of flow history upstream of an individual row domain are also considered. The results are formulated in terms of individual spanwise row parameters. A corresponding set of streamwise resolved heat transfer characteristics formulated in terms of flow and geometric parameters characterizing the overall arrays is described.

Global change in the geosphere-biosphere: Initial priorities for an IGBP

Some of the factors are outlined that leads one to endorse the concept of focused, international geosphere-biosphere program, whose goal is to understand the interactive physical, chemical, and biological processes that regulate the Earth's unique environment for life, the changes that are occurring in this system, and the manner in which they are influenced by human actions. There is a pressing need to assess the consequence of human activities in the context of natural global change and to provide the body of knowledge necessary to chart a wise course to the future. A number of specific objectives were developed which leads to the conclusion that the need for new programs of observation of the Earth as a planet, a better understanding of the interactive processes that governs its changes, the development of a new generation of coupled modes, and the design of suitable tests to guide the development of these models and the understanding of the processes involved. Some general recommendations are summarized.

A novel method of calculating far-field patterns of large aperture antennas

A method is described for calculation of the radiation pattern of large aperture antennas. A piece-wise linear approximation of the aperture field using overlapping pyramidal basis functions allows the radiation pattern of an aperture antenna to be calculated as though it were a two-dimensional array. The calculation of radiation pattern data versus theta and phi, suitable for 3-D or contour plot algorithms, is achieved by locating the array in the yz-plane and performing a summation over the aperture field data sampled on a square grid. A FORTRAN subroutine is provided for performing radiation pattern calculations. Numerical results are included to demonstrate the accuracy and convergence of the method. These numerical results indicate that typical accuracies of + or - 0.1 dB for Directivity, + or - dB for the 1st Sidelobe Level, and + - 2dB for the 2nd Sidelobe Level can be obtained with an aperture grid of 45x45 points and requires approximately 0.02 seconds CPU time per far-field data point on a VAX 11/750 with a floating point accelerator.

Neighborhood comparison operator

Digital values in a moving window are compared by an operator having nine comparators connected to line buffers for receiving a succession of central pixels together with eight neighborhood pixels. A single bit of program control determines whether the neighborhood pixels are to be compared with the central pixel or a threshold value. The central pixel is always compared with the threshold. The omparator output plus 2 bits indicating odd-even pixel/line information about the central pixel addresses a lookup table to provide 14 bits of information, including 2 bits which control a selector to pass either the central pixel value, the other 12 bits of table information, or the bit-wise logical OR of all nine pixels through circuit that implements a very wide OR gate.

Spatially extended 10 micron emission from the infrared reflection nebula GSS30

A surface brightness map and point-wise photometry at 10 microns of the infrared reflection nebula GSS30 were made with the Wyoming 2.3-m telescope. Extended emission is detected as far as 10 arcsec north of the illuminating star, IRS1. The photometry shows that the nebular surface brightness is a factor of three more than that expected from thermal emission from dust grains. If the 10 micron flux is due to scattering, then grains with a radius of 1.6 microns are required. Alternatively, the 10 micron flux is consistent with the flux expected from the unidentified IR emission features at 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 microns.
