Eight Ways Agrivoltaics Installations Can Impact Communities: Insights from the Energy to Communities Peer-Learning Cohort

From July to December of 2024, the National Laboratory of the Rockies partnered with World Resources Institute to run a peer-learning cohort for local governments and community-based organizations on "Implementing an Agrivoltaics Project." This cohort effort, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy to Communities program, provided 15 organizations with expert presentations, peer-learning opportunities, and technical assistance related to agrivoltaics project development. Pulling from cohort discussions, this document shares a summary of the benefits that agrivoltaics projects can provide to surrounding communities.

Patient rooms transition: Contemporary makes way for the future

Recent advances in lighting research, technology and control systems are creating new opportunities to use lighting in healthcare facilities, particularly patient rooms, to improve everyday experiences for patients, visitors and staff. Healthcare facilities design has undergone shifts in thinking over the past 50 years, including the incorporation of more technology, and moving from an institutional appearance to a residential appearance, with biophilic elements. The Facilities Guidelines Institute defines the term environment of care as “those physical environment features in a health care facility that are created, structured, and maintained to support and enhance the delivery of health care”. Many attributes of the environment of care in existing hospital patient rooms, especially those built prior to 1990, reflect a focus on maximizing the efficiency of delivering medical care, sometimes without much attention to the impact of design on the experience of patients and guests.

Paving the Way for Net Zero Energy Codes through Performance Based Approaches

The prescriptive path is the most widely used approach for commercial code compliance in the United States. However, to achieve near-term net zero energy performance that many stakeholders in the buildings industry desire, it is clear that energy codes will need to transition from prescriptive to performance-based approaches. However, that transition is not without potential pitfalls. Among the concerns expressed by stakeholders are added complexity and cost, lack of confidence in energy modeling results, gamesmanship on the part of applicants, lack or qualified reviewers, challenges in promoting de-carbonization, and the inequity of trading long lived envelope efficiency for short lived measures such as building controls. This paper will discuss multiple approaches being evaluated and implemented by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to improve the usability of the performance-based approach for both code compliance and beyond code programs to meet aggressive energy savings targets. A 'system performance' approach provides a simpler approach compared to whole building performance, while keeping tradeoffs limited to specific building systems. A simplified whole-building performance-based approach for small commercial buildings can cost effectively achieve deeper savings for buildings that typically follow the prescriptive compliance approach. Improved reporting and verification processes applied to the traditional performance path can provide greater confidence in simulation results and facilitate adoption of performance-based approaches. Prescriptive packages provide prescriptive solutions while targeting specific performance thresholds. This paper discusses the progress being made with each of these approaches and provides examples of their implementation in energy codes and beyond code programs.

DOE Zero Energy Ready Home Case Study HIA 2020: United Way of Long Island, Net Positive All Electric Home, Port Jefferson Station, NY

Case study of a DOE 2020 Housing Innovation Award winning custom home in a mixed-humid climate that got a HERS -2 with PV, with 2,500 square feet, featuring a novel attic truss specifically designed to accommodate a ducted mini-split heat pump tucked into an insulated chase in the vented attic. The walls are constructed of 2x6 studs installed at 24 inches on center and incorporating advanced framing techniques to reduce the amount of lumber needed and to provide more room for insulation.

Energy Credits—A New Way to Save in ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2022

This article discusses a new Section 11 that has been added to Standard 90.1-2022 to increase energy savings by requiring additional energy credit measures beyond the base prescriptive requirements. This new requirement targets a 5% reduction in overall building energy cost using a broad range of additional measures. Allowing designers to choose measures that are particularly suited to a particular project provides flexibility in increasing energy savings. There are resources available to help designers implement this new requirement in Standard 90.1.
