Semiconducting Zn x Mo 3 S 13 -GO Chalcocarbogel: A High-Capacity and Stable Sulfur-Equivalent Conversion-Based Electrode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium–sulfur batteries with a sulfur electrode offer a theoretical capacity of ∼1672 mAh g –1 , but rapid capacity loss mainly constrains their practical application. This work introduces a semiconducting and amorphous Zn x Mo 3 S 13 -GO (x = 0.5) chalcocarbogel sulfur-equivalent electrode with superior capacity and stability for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The Zn x Mo 3 S 13 -GO is synthesized in solution under ambient conditions, and its local structure contains S–S, M-Q (M = Mo, Zn; Q = S, O), C–S, and Mo–Mo bonding motifs with Mo coordination environment closely related to Mo 3 S 13 anions, as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray scattering, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The Li/Zn x Mo 3 S 13 -GO cell offers an initial discharge capacity of 1019 mAh g –1 at a rate of C/3. After the activation cycles, the Li/Zn x Mo 3 S 13 -GO cell demonstrates good cycling stability, retaining a discharge capacity of 519.4 mAh g –1 after 250 cycles with ∼99.98% Coulombic efficiency and excellent rate capabilities. Moreover, it provides an initial discharge capacity of ∼574 mAh g –1 and maintains a retention capacity of 279 mAh g –1 at 1C after 625 cycles. The Lewis acidic Zn 2+ ion enhances the Lewis basic polysulfide anchoring ability and reduces the dissolution of polysulfides produced during the redox process through Zn–S covalent interaction, while the semiconducting and amorphous structure of the chalcocarbogel increases the electrical and ionic conductivity. Furthermore, this work highlights chalcocarbogels’ potential for developing high-capacity and stable electrodes for LIBs.

Solvent-Driven Transformation of Zn/Cd 2+ -Deoxycholate Assemblies

Deoxycholic acid (DOC) is a unique, biologically derived surfactant with facial amphiphilicity that has been exploited, albeit minimally, in supramolecular assembly of materials. Here, we present the synthesis and structural characterization of three hybrid metal (Zn 2+ and Cd 2+ )-DOC compounds. Analysis by single-crystal Xray diffraction reveals the many interactions that are possible between these facial surfactants and the influence of solvent molecules that drive the assembly of materials. These structures are the first metal- DOC complexes besides those obtained from alkali and alkaline earth metals. We isolated polymeric chains of both Cd and Zn (Zn poly -DOC and Cd poly -DOC) from water. Major interactions between DOC molecules in these phases are hydrophobic in nature. Cd poly -DOC exhibits unique P1 symmetry, with complete interdigitation of the amphiphiles between neighboring polymeric chains. Zn 4 -DOC, obtained from methanol dissolution of Zn poly -DOC, features the OZn 4 tetrahedron, widely known in basic zinc acetate and MOF-5 (metal organic framework). We document a solvent-driven, roomtemperature transition between Zn poly -DOC and Zn 4 -DOC (in both directions) by scanning and transmission electron microscopies in addition to small-angle X-ray scattering, powder X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy. These studies show the methanoldriven transition of Zn poly -DOC to Zn 4 -DOC occurs via an intermediate with no long-range order of the Zn 4 clusters, indicating the strongest interactions driving assembly are intramolecular. On the contrary, water-driven solid-to-solid transformation from Zn 4 -DOC to Zn poly -DOC exhibits crystal-to-crystal transformation. Zn poly -DOC is robust, easy to synthesize, and comprised of biologically benign components, so we demonstrate dye absorption as a proxy for water treatment applications. It favors absorption of positively charged dyes. These studies advance molecular level knowledge of the supramolecular assembly of facial surfactants that can be exploited in the design of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. This research also highlights the potential of solvent for tuning supramolecular assembly processes, leading to new hybrid materials featuring facial surfactants.

Zn‐Doped P‐Type InAs Nanocrystal Quantum Dots

Abstract Doped heavy metal‐free III–V semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) are of great interest both from the fundamental aspects of doping in highly confined structures, and from the applicative side of utilizing such building blocks in the fabrication of p–n homojunction devices. InAs nanocrystals (NCs), that are of particular relevance for short‐wave IR detection and emission applications, manifest heavy n‐type character poising a challenge for their transition to p‐type behavior. The p‐type doping of InAs NCs is presented with Zn – enabling control over the charge carrier type in InAs QDs field effect transistors. The post‐synthesis doping reaction mechanism is studied for Zn precursors with varying reactivity. Successful p‐type doping is achieved by the more reactive precursor, diethylzinc. Substitutional doping by Zn 2+ replacing In 3+ is established by X‐ray absorption spectroscopy analysis. Furthermore, enhanced near infrared photoluminescence is observed due to surface passivation by Zn as indicated from elemental mapping utilizing high‐resolution electron microscopy corroborated by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy study. The demonstrated ability to control the carrier type, along with the improved emission characteristics, paves the way towards fabrication of optoelectronic devices active in the short‐wave infrared region utilizing heavy‐metal free nanocrystal building blocks.

On the Effects of Aliovalent Substitutions in Thermoelectric Zintl Pnictides. Varied Polyanionic Dimensionality and Complex Structural Transformations–The Case of Sr 3 ZnP 3 vs Sr 3 Al x Zn 1– x P 3

The structures and the transport properties of a novel family of Zintl phosphides and arsenides with the formula AE 3 ZnPn 3 and the solid solutions AE 3 Al x Zn 1–x Pn 3 , AE 3 ZnAs y P 1–y (AE = Sr, Eu; Pn = P, As) are reported. Crystals of nine new phases have been obtained via Pb-flux reactions and used for structural work by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The derived orthorhombic structure is without a direct analog, and features unusual structural units, where the Zn atoms are in both distorted tetrahedral and trigonal-planar coordination of pnictogens. Electronic structure calculations reveal moderately wide bandgaps for Sr 3 ZnP 3 and Sr 3 ZnAs 3 , on the order of 0.70 and 0.63 eV, respectively. Electrical transport measurements above room temperature indicate relatively high resistivity values above 500 K (ρ ≈ 4.8 Ω cm and above), but some of the samples exhibit very high Seebeck coefficients, as large as 300 μV/K at 560 K for Sr 3 ZnAs 3 . Aliovalent substitutions in AE 3 ZnPn 3 , achieved by the partial replacement of Zn 2+ with Al 3+ cations promote occupational and positional disorder, which causes structural transformation towards the disordered variant of the Sr 5 Al 2 Sb 6 structure type. Such substitutions also change the dimensionality of the polyanionic sub-lattice in the resulting quaternary AE 3 Al x Zn 1–x Pn 3 phases. Furthermore, preliminary transport property data on the latter reveal nine times lower electrical resistivity (ρ 500 ≈ 0.5 Ω cm) together with a significantly enhanced Seebeck coefficient, αmax ≈ 430 μV/K at 560 K.

Anode Potential Evolution During Zinc Metal Plating and Stripping in Dual-Solvent Battery Electrolytes

In the field of battery electrolyte research, the importance of the working cation solvation environment has become increasingly more apparent. To optimize bulk properties and, especially, interfacial reactions, multisolvent electrolytes (electrolytes containing two different solvents) have become more prevalent in battery research and development. In this work, we elucidate the relationship between cation solvation and interfacial electrochemistry, demonstrating that preferential solvation of Zn 2+ by a strong coordinating solvent such as 2-methoxyethylamine or ethylenediamine as opposed to a weaker solvent such as 3-methylsulfolane or acetonitrile leads to dynamic evolution in the interfacial energetics during Zn plating and stripping due to local changes in solvent composition and coordination. In some instances, interfacial solvation evolution can shift the reversible potential of Zn plating by as much as 1 V under relatively mild rate conditions. Through these investigations, we establish the generality of this phenomenon, highlight its importance as a consideration in dual-solvent battery electrolytes, and provide direction for tailoring electrochemistry through solvent design.

Liposomes with polyribonucleotides as model of precellular systems

Three types of liposomes were prepared under anoxic conditions: from dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline (DPPC), from egg yolk phosphatidyl choline (PC), and from PC with cholesterol (PC:Chol). These were used for encapsulation of poly(U) and poly(C). It was found that 36 to 70 percent of the available liposome lipids and 2 to 5 percent of the polyribonucleotides could be entrapped. An enhanced encapsulation of poly(U) and poly(C) by all three types of liposomes was observed in the presence of 0.001 to 0.01 M Zn(2+), with the effect being greatest with DPPC. The presence of 1.0 M urea inhibited the formation of PC liposomes.

Voltage‐Modulated Untwist Deformations and Multispectral Optical Effects from Ion Intercalation into Chiral Ceramic Nanoparticles

Abstract Reconfiguration of chiral ceramic nanostructures after ion intercalation should favor specific nanoscale twists leading to strong chiroptical effects. In this work, V 2 O 3 nanoparticles are shown to have “built‐in” chiral distortions caused by binding of tartaric acid enantiomers to the nanoparticle surface. As evidenced by spectroscopy/microscopy techniques and calculations of nanoscale chirality measures, the intercalation of Zn 2+ ions into the V 2 O 3 lattice results in particle expansion, untwist deformations, and chirality reduction. Coherent deformations in the particle ensemble manifest as changes in sign and positions of circular polarization bands at ultraviolet, visible, mid‐infrared (IR), near‐IR (NIR), and IR wavelengths. The g‐ factors observed for IR and NIR spectral diapasons are ≈100–400 times higher than those for previously reported dielectric, semiconductor, and plasmonic nanoparticles. Nanocomposite films layer‐by‐layer assembled (LBL) from V 2 O 3 nanoparticles reveal cyclic‐voltage‐driven modulation of optical activity. Device prototypes for IR and NIR range problematic for liquid crystals and other organic materials are demonstrated. High optical activity, synthetic simplicity, sustainable processability, and environmental robustness of the chiral LBL nanocomposites provide a versatile platform for photonic devices. Similar reconfigurations of particle shapes are expected for multiple chiral ceramic nanostructures, leading to unique optical, electrical, and magnetic properties.

An Ultrafast, Durable, and High-Loading Polymer Anode for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries and Supercapacitors

Zn metal has shown promise as an anode material for grid-level energy storage, yet is challenged by dendritic growth and low Coulombic efficiency. Herein, an ultrafast, stable, and high-loading polymer anode for aqueous Zn-ion batteries and capacitors (ZIBs and ZICs) is developed by engineering both the electrode and electrolyte. The anode polymer is rationally prepared to have a suitable electronic structure and a large pi-conjugated structure, whereas the electrolyte is manufactured based on the superiority of triflate anions over sulfate anions, as analyzed and confirmed via experiments and simulations. This dual engineering results in an optimal polymer anode with a low discharge potential, near-theoretical capacity, ultrahigh-loading capability (approximate to 50 mg cm -2 ), ultrafast rate (100 A g -1 ), and ultralong lifespan (one million cycles). Further, its mechanism involves reversible Zn 2+ /proton co-storage at the carbonyl site. When the polymer anode is coupled with cathodes for both ZIB and ZIC applications, the devices demonstrate ultrahigh power densities and ultralong lifespans, far surpassing those of corresponding Zn-metal-based devices.

Molecular Catalyst Synthesis Strategies to Prepare Atomically Dispersed Fe-N-C Heterogeneous Catalysts

We report a strategy to integrate atomically dispersed iron within a heterogeneous nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) support, inspired by routes for metalation of molecular macrocyclic iron complexes. The N-C support, derived from pyrolysis of a ZIF-8 metal–organic framework, is metalated via solution-phase reaction with FeCl 2 and tributyl amine, as a Brønsted base, at 150 °C. Fe active sites are characterized by 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. The site density can be increased by selective removal of Zn 2+ ions from the N-C support prior to metalation, resembling the transmetalation strategy commonly employed for the preparation of molecular Fe-macrocycles. As a result, the utility of this approach is validated by the higher catalytic rates (per total Fe) of these materials relative to established Fe-N-C catalysts, benchmarked using an aerobic oxidation reaction.

Synthesis of luminescent core/shell α-Zn 3 P 2 /ZnS quantum dots

Metal chalcogenide nanoparticles offer vast control over their optoelectronic properties via size, shape, composition, and morphology which has led to their use across fields including optoelectronics, energy storage, and catalysis. While cadmium and lead-based nanocrystals are prevalent in applications, concerns over their toxicity have motivated researchers to explore alternate classes of nanomaterials based on environmentally benign metals such as zinc and tin. The goal of this research is to identify material systems that offer comparable performance to existing metal chalcogenide systems from abundant, recyclable, and environmentally benign materials. With band gaps that span the visible through the infrared, II–V direct band gap semiconductors such as tetragonal zinc phosphide (α-Zn 3 P 2 ) are promising candidates for optoelectronics. To date, syntheses of α-Zn 3 P 2 nanoparticles have been hindered because of the toxicity of zinc and phosphorus precursors, surface oxidation, and defect states leading to carrier trapping and low photoluminescence quantum yield. Here, we report a colloidal synthesis of quantum confined α-Zn 3 P 2 nanoparticles from common phosphorus precursor tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine and environmentally benign zinc carboxylates. Shelling of the nanoparticles with zinc sulfide is shown as a method of preventing oxidation and improving the optical properties of the nanoparticles. These results show a route to stabilizing α-Zn 3 P 2 nanoparticles for optoelectronic device applications.

Assembled peptoid crystalline nanomaterials as carbonic anhydrase mimics for promoted hydration and sequestration of CO 2

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) mimics have received significant attention due to their promising applications in the enhanced hydration and sequestration of CO 2 . Herein, we report the assembly of sequence-defined peptoids into crystalline nanomaterials with controlled microenvironment of active sites as CA mimics for promoted hydration and sequestration of CO 2 . By incorporating specific ligands into self-assembling peptoids and coordinating these ligands with metal cations, we synthesize a variety of crystalline nanosheets and nanotubes as efficient CA mimics comparable to natural bovine CA. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the critical roles of peptoid-Zn 2+ binding energy and the active site local microenvironment on the catalytic performance of these CA mimics. CO 2 precipitation results show that these CA mimics promote the hydration and sequestration of CO 2 while retaining high thermal and chemical stabilities. This study offers essential guidance for the future design of high-performance CA-mimics suitable for applications in CO 2 capture and sequestration.

To grind or not to grind? The influence of mechanical and thermal treatments on the $\mathrm{Cu/Zn}$ disorder in $\mathrm{Cu}$ 2 $\mathrm{ZnSn}$($\mathrm{S}$ x $\mathrm{Se}$ 1-x ) 4 monograins

We report that Kesterite-type based thin film solar cell technologies are mainly based on polycrystalline absorber layers. A promising low cost alternative technology uses Cu 2 ZnSn(S x Se 1-x ) 4 (CZTSSe) monograins (single crystals of 20–100 μm size) which are fixed in a polymer matrix to form a flexible solar cell. The Cu/Zn disorder is discussed as a possible reason for band tailing causing voltage losses limiting the efficiency of CZTSSe-based devices. The experimental determination of the order parameter Q which is a quantitative measure of Cu/Zn disorder, requires a differentiation between the isoelectronic cations Cu + and Zn 2+ . An in-depth analysis of neutron diffraction data allows the determination of type and concentration of intrinsic point defects including a distinction between Cu and Zn. Neutron diffraction requires large sample volumes, thus monograins offer the unique possibility to correlate structural disorder in CZTSSe with device performance parameters. In this study we tackle the influence of grinding the monograins on stoichiometry deviations, the Cu/Zn disorder as well as intrinsic point defects and optoelectronic properties of CZTSSe monograins. Moreover, an easy methodology based on Raman scattering spectroscopy is proposed for the assessment of Cu/Zn disorder in the CZTSSe compounds.

Zng1 is a GTP-dependent zinc transferase needed for activation of methionine aminopeptidase

The evolution of zinc (Zn) as a protein cofactor altered the functional landscape of biology, but dependency on Zn also created an Achilles' heel, necessitating adaptive mechanisms to ensure Zn availability to proteins. A debated strategy is whether metallochaperones exist to prioritize essential Zn-dependent proteins. Here, we present evidence for a conserved family of putative metal transferases in human and fungi, which interact with Zn-dependent methionine aminopeptidase type I (MetAP1/Map1p/Fma1). Deletion of the putative metal transferase in Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ZNG1; formerly YNR029c) leads to defective Map1p function and a Zn-deficiency growth defect. In vitro, Zng1p can transfer Zn 2+ or Co 2+ to apo-Map1p, but unlike characterized copper chaperones, transfer is dependent on GTP hydrolysis. Proteomics reveal mis-regulation of the Zap1p transcription factor regulon due to loss of ZNG1 and Map1p activity, suggesting that Zng1p is required to avoid a compounding effect of Map1p dysfunction on survival during Zn limitation.

Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions in Hybrid Aqueous/Nonaqueous Electrolytes Enable Low-Cost and Long-Lifespan Sodium-Ion Storage

Although “water-in-salt” electrolytes have opened a new pathway to expand the electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes, the electrode instability and irreversible proton co-insertion caused by aqueous media still hinder the practical application, even when using exotic fluorinated salts. In this study, an accessible hybrid electrolyte class based on common sodium salts is proposed, and crucially an ethanol-rich media is introduced to achieve highly stable Na-ion electrochemistry. Here, ethanol exerts a strong hydrogen-bonding effect on water, simultaneously expanding the electrochemical stability window of the hybridized electrolyte to 2.5 V, restricting degradation activities, reducing transition metal dissolution from the cathode material, and improving electrolyte–electrode wettability. The binary ethanol–water solvent enables the impressive cycling of sodium-ion batteries based on perchlorate, chloride, and acetate electrolyte salts. Notably, a Na 0.44 MnO 2 electrode exhibits both high capacity (81 mAh g –1 ) and a remarkably long cycle life >1000 cycles at 100 mA g –1 (a capacity decay rate per cycle of 0.024%) in a 1 M sodium acetate system. The Na 0.44 MnO 2 /Zn full cells also show excellent cycling stability and rate capability in a wide temperature range. The gained understanding of the hydrogen-bonding interactions in the hybridized electrolyte can provide new battery chemistry guidelines in designing promising candidates for developing low-cost and long-lifespan batteries based on other (Li + , K + , Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ , and Al 3+ ) systems.

Decorrelated singlet and triplet exciton delocalization in acetylene-bridged Zn-porphyrin dimers

The controlled delocalization of molecular excitons remains an important goal towards the application of organic chromophores in processes ranging from light-initiated chemical transformations to classical and quantum information processing. In this study, we present a methodology to couple optical and magnetic spectroscopic techniques and assess the delocalization of singlet and triplet excitons in model molecular chromophores. By comparing the steady-state and time-resolved optical spectra of Zn-porphyrin monomers and weakly coupled dimers, we show that we can use the identity of substituents bound at specific positions of the macromolecules' rings to control the inter-ring delocalization of singlet excitons stemming from their B states through acetylene bridges. While broadened steady-state absorption spectra suggest the presence of delocalized B state excitons in mesityl-substituted Zn-tetraphenyl porphyrin dimers (Zn 2 U-D), we confirm this conclusion by measuring an enhanced ultrafast non-radiative relaxation from these inter-ring excitonic states to lower lying electronic states relative to their monomer. In contrast to the delocalized nature of singlet excitons, we use time-resolved EPR and ENDOR spectroscopies to show that the triplet states of the Zn-porphyrin dimers remain localized on one of the two macrocyclic sub-units. We use the analysis of EPR and ENDOR measurements on unmetallated model porphyrin monomers and dimers to support this conclusion. The results of DFT calculations also support the interpretation of localized triplet states. These results demonstrate researchers cannot conclude triplet excitons delocalize in macromolecular based on the presence of spatially extended singlet excitons, which can help in the design of chromophores for application in spin conversion and information processing technologies.

Study of CO2 sorbents for extravehicular activity

Portable life support equipment was studied for meeting the requirements of extravehicular activities. Previous studies indicate that the most promising method for performing the CO2 removal function removal function were metallic oxides and/or metallic hydroxides. Mgo, Ag2, and Zno metallic oxides and Mg(OH)2 and Zn(OH)2 metallic hydroxides were studied, by measuring sorption and regeneration properties of each material. The hydroxides of Mg and Zn were not regenerable and the zinc oxide compounds showed no stable form. A silver oxide formulation was developed which rapidly absorbs approximately 95% of its 0.19 Kg CO2 Kg oxide and has shown no sorption or structural degeneration through 22 regenerations. It is recommended that the basic formula be further developed and tested in large-scale beds under simulated conditions.

Amorphous zinc–molybdenum–sulfide chalcogel as a long-cycle, high-capacity electrode for lithium-ion batteries

The inherent limitations of intercalation-based electrodes in lithium-ion batteries have prompted the search for alternative materials with higher specific capacities and robust electrochemical stability. Sulfur-based electrodes, despite their high theoretical capacities (1672 mAh g −1 ), typically suffer from poor cycling performance. In this work, zinc molybdenum polysulfide (Zn x Mo 3 S 13 , 0.5 ≤ x), an amorphous semiconductor chalcogel, exhibits high specific capacity and excellent cycling stability. Synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analyses reveal a short-range atomic structure comprising Mo–Mo, M–S (M = Mo, Zn), and S–S bonding motifs. The coordination environment of Mo and S closely resembles that of Mo 3 S 13 clusters, interconnected via S–S bridges and Zn 2+ cations. The Li/Zn x Mo 3 S 13 cell delivers an initial discharge capacity of 844 mAh g −1 at C/3, and retains 386.2 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles with an average coulombic efficiency of 99.99%. The distribution of relaxation times analysis confirms the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase, which underpins the cell's long-term stability. In conclusion, this outstanding performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of the chalcogel's unique amorphous framework, semiconductive character, Zn-mediated polysulfide anchoring, and structural resilience, positioning Zn x Mo 3 S 13 chalcogel among the most durable pure metal sulfide cathodes reported for next-generation LIBs.
