Hybrid phonon-enhanced optical absorbers and emitters

A semiconductor optical device is comprised of a phonon donating material structurally connected to an indirect bandgap material to improve absorption and emission of light in the indirect bandgap material. An excitation energy source provides excitation radiation to the semiconductor optical device to excite electrons in the semiconductor optical device. Phonons from the phonon donating material present in the indirect bandgap material provide a mechanism for increased rates of electron-hole generation and recombination, and electrical leads provide an electrical connection to the semiconductor optical device.

Additive manufacturing of composite neutron absorbing components

Collimators and other components for use in neutron scattering experiments or to provide neutron shielding in nuclear reactors or accelerator based neutron sources are produced by additive manufacturing from multiple different types of material, such as boron carbide (B4C), steel, isotopically enriched boron carbide (10B4C), and blends thereof.

Radioactive waste repository when contacted by water provides borates that absorb neutrons

A container holds radioactive material. A sub-criticality controller protects the radioactive material from reaching a criticality from contact with the water. The sub-criticality controller includes a metallic composition having at least one metal component and at least one borate component bonded to the at least one metal component. The metallic composition forms borates when the metallic composition contacts the water.
