Life after 30 years - a PV system in Colorado

The PV system consisted of 155 monocrystalline Si Arco M53 panels, installed in 1987. 80 were installed on a fixed tilt rack, and 75 on 5 separate dual-axis passive trackers. The system was decommissioned in 2017 due a campus re-design and building expansion at the Platte River Power Authority (PPRA) site. Prior to decommissioning a site visit established the following failure type observations: EVA browning (100%), cracked cells (60%), and cracked wires or grommets (9%, or more if replacements were made selectively on cracked parts). EVA browning is typical in modules of this vintage, whereas the occurrence of so many cracked cells is surprising and is likely weather-related. The fairly frequent occurrence of cracked wires and grommets serves as a reminder that accelerated testing of these components is important for goals of low-cost 50-year energy generation. In smaller numbers, thermal effects (7%), bent frames (1%), and cell corrosion (<1%) were observed. A sample of 20 modules was selected and brought to NREL for in-depth characterization. Because baseline measurements were not available using the nameplate rating, which can be inaccurate, revealed a mean module sample degradation of 0.7 %/year. Sporadic production data during the 30 years determined a system degradation rate closer to 1.2 %/year. Subsequently, four of these modules were re-mounted outdoors at NREL and are now approaching a total lifetime of 34 years.

Reduced Organic Outgassing in the NASA Osiris-Rex and Hayabusa2 Curation Facility by Careful Selection and Implementation of Cleanroom Construction Materials

In October 2021, NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Astromaterials Acquisition and Cu-ration Office in JSC bldg. 31 completed construction and commissioning of the OSIRIS-REx and Hayabusa2cleanroom laboratory suites along with new precision cleaning and advanced curation laboratories: •OSIRIS-REx Curation Cleanroom: ISO Class 5•Hayabusa2 Curation Cleanroom: ISO Class 5•Final Precision Cleaning Cleanroom: ISO Class 5•Advanced Precision Cleaning Cleanroom: ISO Class 6•PreClean Precision Cleaning Cleanroom: ISO Class 6•Advanced Curation Cleanroom: ISO Class 7The new curation facilities are designed for initial receiving, basic characterization, curation processing, and preliminary examination of carbonaceous asteroidal material. The facilities are also designed to enable long-term pristine sample storage to preserve the scientific integrity of each sample to enable decades of future re-search by the international science community. The scientific study of organics in general is critical for both missions. The OSIRIS-REx mission executed a stringent contamination control plan [1] where all sample hardware at time of sample acquisition would be at Level 100 A/2 per IEST-STD-CC1246D (non-volatile residue (NVR) < 500 ng/cm2). In addition, the mission imposed a requirement of <180 ng/cm2 for amino acids (and hydrazine) [1]. Given these mission requirements, long-term storage preservation requirements, and information from the Organic Contamination Baseline Study at JSC [2], the JSC Curation team decided to carefully select cleanroom construction materials that would not hinder the scientific search for amino acids and the study of organics in the samples [3].

Event Selections in the NOvA 2024 Analysis

The NuMI Off-axis $\nu_e$ Experiment (NOvA) is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment that studies a neutrino beam produced by the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) facility at Fermilab to constrain the PNFS mixing angles, the neutrino mass hierarchy, and the CP-violating phase $\delta_{CP}$. These parameters are extracted by comparing the spectra of muon neutrinos and electron neutrinos measured at the near and far detectors, using an extrapolation of the Near Detector spectra. Accurate event selection is critical to this process, as only interactions with well-reconstructed energies and interaction types should be included in the oscillation analysis to reduce systematic uncertainties. In this work, we describe the selection criteria used for muon and electron neutrinos in the Near and Far Detector. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the criteria by examining the efficiency and purity of the event selections as well as their impact on key variables used in the oscillation analysis.

Cost and Performance Baseline for Fossil Energy Plants Volume 1: Bituminous Coal and Natural Gas to Electricity

This report presents an independent assessment of the cost and performance of select fossil energy power systems—pulverized coal (PC) and natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) plants—using a systematic, transparent, technical, and economic approach. This is Volume 1 of the baseline series: Bituminous Coal and Natural Gas to Electricity. The cost and performance of fossil fuel‐based generation technologies represented in this report are important inputs to assessments and determinations of technology combinations to be utilized to meet the projected demands of future power markets. From a research and development perspective, this report is used to assess goals and metrics and to provide a consistent basis for comparing developing technologies. The main report consists of fifteen power plant configurations, six PC cases (with and without carbon capture) nine NGCC cases (with and without carbon capture) and few additional cases of higher capture rate, for both PC and NGCC plants in the appendix. In addition to the report, an interactive tool was developed that allows users to manipulate six key study parameters simultaneously for each case and visualize the impact on three metrics: 1) levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), 2) cost of CO 2 capture (CCC), and 3) cost of CO 2 avoided (CCA). Exploring the keV-scale physics potential of CUORE

We present the analysis techniques developed to explore the keV-scale energy region of the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) experiment, based on more than 2 metric ton yr of data collected over five years. By prioritizing a stricter selection over a larger exposure, we are able to optimize data selection for thresholds at 10 keV and 3 keV with 691 kg yr and 11 kg yr of data, respectively. We study how the performance varies among the 988-detector array with different detector characteristics and data-taking conditions. We achieve an average baseline resolution of 2.54 ±0.14 keV FWHM and 1.18 ±0.02 keV FWHM for the data selection at 10 keV and 3 keV, respectively. The analysis methods employed reduce the overall background by about an order of magnitude, reaching 2.06±0.05 counts/(keV kg days) and 16±2 counts/(keV kg days) at the thresholds of 10 keV and 3 keV. We evaluate for the first time the near-threshold reconstruction efficiencies of the CUORE experiment, and find these to be 50 ±2% and 26 ±4% at 10 keV and 3 keV, respectively. This analysis provides crucial insights into rare decay studies, new physics searches, and keV-scale background modeling with CUORE. We demonstrate that ton-scale cryogenic calorimeters can operate across a wide energy range, from keV to MeV, establishing their scalability as versatile detectors for rare event and dark matter physics. These findings also inform the optimization of future large mass cryogenic calorimeters to enhance the sensitivity to low-energy phenomena.

Evoked potential correlates of selective attention with multi-channel auditory inputs

Ten subjects were presented with random, rapid sequences of four auditory tones which were separated in pitch and apparent spatial position. The N1 component of the auditory vertex evoked potential (EP) measured relative to a baseline was observed to increase with attention. It was concluded that the N1 enhancement reflects a finely tuned selective attention to one stimulus channel among several concurrent, competing channels. This EP enhancement probably increases with increased information load on the subject.

Radiator selection for Space Station Solar Dynamic Power Systems

A study was conducted to define the best radiator for heat rejection of the Space Station Solar Dynamic Power System. Included in the study were radiators for both the Organic Rankine Cycle and Closed Brayton Cycle heat engines. A number of potential approaches were considered for the Organic Rankine Cycle and a constructable radiator was chosen. Detailed optimizations of this concept were conducted resulting in a baseline for inclusion into the ORC Preliminary Design. A number of approaches were also considered for the CBC radiator. For this application a deployed pumped liquid radiator was selected which was also refined resulting in a baseline for the CBC preliminary design. This paper reports the results and methodology of these studies and describes the preliminary designs of the Space Station Solar Dynamic Power System radiators for both of the candidate heat engine cycles.

Baseline vs. DER Scenario

Projections and associated uncertainty estimates are generated for a variety of user-selectable EV charging sessions, electricity tariffs, subsidy levels, revenue schemes, charging station configurations, and on-site solar and/or storage options. The outputs are presented in CHIP's web portal browser in the form of easily interpretable graphics (interactive graphs and bar charts) that facilitate convenient comparison among different scenarios to aid decision-making. The user should bring assumptions for modeling on simulation planning horizon, number of EV charging sessions per year, electricity costs (energy and demand charge rates; flat versus time-of-use rate), site capital costs (equipment for EV chargers and transformer), solar PV, and battery energy storage (kW).
