Novel dielectric reduces corona breakdown in ac capacitors

Dielectric system was developed which consists of two layers of 25-gage paper separated by one layer of 50-gage polypropylene to reduce corona breakdown in ac capacitors. System can be used in any alternating current application where constant voltage does not exceed 400 V rms. With a little research it could probably be increased to 700 to 800 V rms.

Terminated capacitor-discharge firing of electroexplosive devices.

By terminating the discharge of energy into an insensitive electroexplosive device, firing-energy parameters can be determined. A simple capacitor-discharge system providing exponential pulses terminated at an adjustable width is described. Basic theory and application to testing are discussed.

Compact 20-kiloampere pulse-forming-network capacitor bank

Bank uses commercially available high-energy-density capacitors for energy storage and silicon-controlled rectifiers for switching. Low voltage design employing solid-state switching is utilized in lieu of conventional gas discharge switching.

Frequency shifting with a solid-state switching capacitor

Frequency shifting, commonly used in electronic signal processing, is applied in tuning, automatic frequency control, antenna element switching, phase shifting, etc. Frequency shifting can be accomplished economically and reliably with simple circuit comprising conventional resistor and solid-state switching device which can be equivalent to two capacitors, depending on switching state.

Investigation of Some Characteristics Related to PCM Thermal Capacitors

In order to provide greater flexibility, shorter computer time, and a parametric study, attention was devoted to an implicit numerical scheme. The experimental work involved outlining and monitoring approximately fourteen tests of an invertable capacitor. Surface and PCM temperatures were measured at several locations and photographs were made of the PCM during melting and solidification. Some typical experimental results are presented and discussed.

20 kA PFN capacitor bank with solid-state switching

A compact high-current pulse-forming network capacitor bank using paralleled silicon controlled rectifiers as switches is described. The maximum charging voltage of the bank is 1kV and maximum load current is 20 kA. The necessary switch equalization criteria and performance with dummy load and an arc plasma generator are described.

Thermal capacitator design rationale. Part 1: Thermal and mechanical property data for selected materials potentially useful in thermal capacitor design and construction

The thermal properties of paraffin hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon mixtures which may be used as the phase change material (PCM) in thermal capacitors are discussed. The paraffin hydrocarbons selected for consideration are those in the range from C11H24 (n-Undecane) to C20H42 (n-Eicosane). A limited amount of data is included concerning other properties of paraffin hydrocarbons and the thermal and mechanical properties of several aluminum alloys which may find application as constructional materials. Data concerning the melting temperature, transition temperature, latent heat of fusion, heat of transition, specific heat, and thermal conductivity of pure and commercial grades of paraffin hydrocarbons are given. An index of companies capable of producing paraffin hydrocarbons and information concerning the availability of various grades (purity levels) is provided.
