Electrokinetically Driven Rare Earth Element Separation by Coated Capillary Arrays

I, Kyle McCarthy, am traveling to Austin, TX for the TechConnect World Innovation conference. At the conference, I will give an poster presentation on research findings from Energy and Homeland Security LDRD "A New, Green Approach to Rare Earth Element (REE) Purification Based on Electrokinetics." titled "Electrokinetically Driven Rare Earth Element Separation..." I will also attend other live presentations and conduct professional networking. This fits within Sandia's energy security mission.

Pattern of filling in the pulmonary capillary bed.

Artificially ventilated and perfused dog lungs were rapidly frozen under various physiological conditions. In 2-micron-thick sections the number of red blood cells (RBCs) per 10-micron length of alveolar septum was counted. Under conditions in which alveolar pressure exceeded venous pressure, variation in RBC concentration within areas supplied by single arterioles accounted completely for variation between areas supplied by different arterioles. Except at very high perfusion pressures when venous pressure exceeded alveolar pressure, there was no significant correlation between RBC concentrations of pairs of adjacent septa.

Capillary gas chromatography with two new moderately high temperature phases.

Gas chromatography test results are presented for two new moderately high-temperature phases of Dexsil 400-GC with free hydroxyl end groups (uncapped) and with end groups covered by trimethyl silyl groups (capped). The two Dexsil 400-GC phases were tested for their ability to resolve N-TFA-DL-(+)-2-butyl esters and n-butyl esters, as well as fatty acid methyl esters and hydrocarbon standards. Generally the more polar uncapped phase was superior to the capped phase in all separation comparisons, except for the hydrocarbons.

Capillary flow weld-bonding

The invention of a weld-bonding technique for titanium plates was described. This involves fastening at least two plates of titanium together using spot-welding and applying a bead of adhesive along the edge of the resistance spot-welded joint which upon heating, flows and fills the separation between the joint components.

Mathematical and computational studies of the stability of axisymmetric annular capillary free surfaces

Of principal interest is the stability of a perfectly wetting liquid in an inverted, vertical, right circular-cylindrical container having a concave spheroidal bottom. The mathematical conditions that the contained liquid be in stable static equilibrium are derived, including those for the limiting case of zero contact angle. Based on these results, a computational investigation is carried out for a particular container that is used for the storage of liquid fuels in NASA Centaur space vehicles, for which the axial ratio of the container bottom is 0.724. It is found that for perfectly wetting liquids the qualitative nature of the onset of instability changes at a critical liquid volume, which for the Centaur fuel tank corresponds to a mean fill level of approximately 0.503 times the tank's radius. Small-amplitude periodic sloshing modes for this tank were calculated; oscillation frequencies or growth rates are given for several Bond numbers and liquid volumes, for normal modes having up to six angular nodes.
