Method for contact resistivity measurements on photovoltaic cells and cell adapted for such measurement

A method is disclosed for scribing at least three grid contacts of a photovoltaic cell to electrically isolate them from the grid contact pattern used to collect solar current generated by the cell, and using the scribed segments for determining parameters of the cell by a combination of contact end resistance (CER) measurements using a minimum of three equally or unequally spaced lines, and transmission line modal (TLM) measurements using a minimum of four unequally spaced lines. TLM measurements may be used to determine sheet resistance under the contact, R.sub.sk, while CER measurements are used to determine contact resistivity, .rho..sub.c, from a nomograph of contact resistivity as a function of contact end resistance and sheet resistivity under the contact. In some cases, such as the case of silicon photovoltaic cells, sheet resistivity under the contact may be assumed to be equal to the known sheet resistance, R.sub.s, of the semiconductor material, thereby obviating the need for TLM measurements to determine R.sub.sk.

Memory cell comprising coupled Josephson junctions

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for operating a memory cell formed from the plurality of coupled Josephson junctions. The memory cell is configured such that applying an electrical signal to the junctions can cause at least one, but not all, of the junctions to change their respective phase states. Subsequent writes to the memory cell using substantially the same electrical pulse do not change the phase state of the plurality of junctions. The memory cell can be ready by providing another electrical pulse to one of the junctions and receiving an output electrical pulse generated in response by a different Josephson junction of the memory cell. A set of phase states are selected to represent the logic values that are stable across anticipated operating conditions for the memory cell. Methods of selecting electrical parameters and manufacturing memory cells are further disclosed.

Optimizing Perovskite Thin‐Film Parameter Spaces with Machine Learning‐Guided Robotic Platform for High‐Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract Simultaneously optimizing the processing parameters of functional thin films remains a challenge. The design and utilization of a fully automated platform called SPINBOT is presented for the engineering of solution‐processed functional thin films. The SPINBOT is capable of performing experiments with high sampling variability through the unsupervised processing of hundreds of substrates with exceptional experimental control. Through the iterative optimization process enabled by the Bayesian optimization (BO) algorithm, the SPINBOT explores an intricate parameter space, continuously improving the quality and reproducibility of the produced thin films. This machine learning (ML)‐guided reliable SPINBOT platform enables the acceleration of the optimization process of perovskite solar cells via a simple photoluminescence characterization of films. As a result, this study arrives at an optimal film that, when processed into a solar cell in an ambient atmosphere, immediately yields a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.6% with satisfactory performance reproducibility. The unsealed devices retain 90% of their initial efficiency after 1100 h of continuous operation at 60–65 °C under metal‐halide lamps. It is anticipated that the integration of robotic platforms with the intelligent algorithm will facilitate the widespread adoption of effective autonomous experimentation to address the evolving needs and constraints within the materials science research community.

A device model for the tandem junction solar cell

A conceptual device model has been developed to explain operation of the tandem junction cell (TJC) when back contacts only are used. Operation and parameters of the cell are explained by transistor action. Experimental observations are presented which confirm that current is collected for carrier generation in the front uncontacted n(plus) region. The model should be useful as a guideline to optimize the TJC by application of transistor design principles.

Photovoltaic characteristics of diffused P/+N bulk GaAs solar cells

The photovoltaic characteristics of P(+)N junction solar cells fabricated on bulk GaAs by an open tube diffusion technique are described in this paper.Spectral response measurements were analyzed in detail and compared to a computer simulation in order to determine important material parameters. It is projected that proper optimization of the cell parameters can increase the efficiency of the cells from 12.2 percent to close to 20 percent.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of lithium-titanium disulfide rechargeable cells

The two-terminal alternating current impedance of Li/TiS2 rechargeable cells was studied as a function of frequency, state-of-charge, and extended cycling. Analysis based on a plausible equivalent circuit model for the Li/TiS2 cell leads to evaluation of kinetic parameters for the various physicochemical processes occurring at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. To investigate the causes of cell degradation during extended cycling, the parameters evaluated for cells cycled 5 times were compared with the parameters of cells cycled over 600 times. The findings are that the combined ohmic resistance of the electrolyte and electrodes suffers a tenfold increase after extended cycling, while the charge-transfer resistance and diffusional impedance at the TiS2/electrolyte interface are not significantIy affected. The results reflect the morphological change and increase in area of the anode due to cycling. The study also shows that overdischarge of a cathode-limited cell causes a decrease in the diffusion coefficient of the lithium ion in the cathode.

Measurement of electrical parameters and current components in the bulk of silicon solar cells

A review and illustration of electrical measurements for determination of the bulk parameters in silicon solar cells is given. The presentation concentrates on transient and small signal admittance measurements. These measurements yield accurate and reliable values of the base lifetime and the surface recombination velocity at the back contract without inaccuracies that normally results from electrons and holes in the p/n junction space charge region. This then allows the determination of the recombination current in each region of the cell. As an example, current components in the emitter, low doped base, high doped base and junction space charge region of the back surface field cell are obtained. Such analysis is essential in determining the relative importance of the base and the emitter and, thus, the region that limits the cell efficiency.

Bipolar Membrane Capacitive Deionization for pH-Assisted Ionic Separations

Selective ionic separations represent an increasingly important technical area for the strategic interests of the U.S. economy–for example, securing critical minerals and materials and circular economy aspirations that include recovering organic acids from processed biomass. This work disseminates bipolar membrane (BPM) capacitive deionization for selective ionic separations from multicomponent, ionic species mixtures. The selective separations are guided by the Pourbaix diagram and acid–base equilibria principles. BPM capacitive deionization was demonstrated to generate alkaline or acidic process streams depending upon the location of the BPM in the electrochemical cell. The role of system operating parameters, such as the cell voltage, residence time, and feed concentration on effluent stream pH was studied. It was observed that the pH adjustment in BPM-CDI/MCDI (MCDI, membrane capacitive deionization) was more sensitive to the cell voltage when compared to the process stream residence time and salt feed concentration. The BPM-MCDI gave over 6 times higher percentage of copper(II) removal when compared to sodium ion removal from brine mixtures. Lastly, BPM-MCDI demonstrated over 40% greater removal for copper ions from brine mixtures and fivefold higher removal for itaconic acid from brine mixtures when benchmarked against a traditional flow-by-MCDI setup.

Summary of process research analysis efforts

A summary of solar-cell process research analysis efforts was presented. Process design and cell design are interactive efforts where technology from integrated circuit processes and other processes are blended. The primary factors that control cell efficiency are: (1) the bulk parameters of the available sheet material, (2) the retention and enhancement of these bulk parameters, and (3) the cell design and the cost to produce versus the finished cells performance. The process sequences need to be tailored to be compatible with the sheet form, the cell shape form, and the processing equipment. New process options that require further evaluation and utilization are lasers, robotics, thermal pulse techniques, and new materials. There are numerous process control techniques that can be adapted and used that will improve product uniformity and reduced costs. Two factors that can lead to longer life modules are the use of solar cell diffusion barriers and improved encapsulation.
