Pedestal Hazard Abatement and Soil Removal Construction Completion Report for Launch Complex 34, Solid Waste Management Unit CC054, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida

This Construction Completion Report summarizes the activities associated with implementation of an interim measure (IM) for hazard abatement of the Launch Pedestal and soil removal at Launch Complex 34 (LC34), Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. The purpose of the hazard abatement IM was to mitigate any continuing source of contamination associated with residual paint on the Launch Pedestal that contained polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Sampling determined that residual PCB concerns were limited to the steel elements on the top-side of the Pedestal, which included the torus ring, feed pipe, down pipes, pipe straps and shields, remaining steel cover plates and bolts, and railing support steel. The IM also mitigated the potential spread of contamination to surrounding areas by removing fallen metal fragments from the concrete launch pad, as well as soil from trenches on the launch pad where PCB-containing paint chips may have accumulated prior to or during Pedestal hazard abatement activities.

The Spacecraft Water Impurity Monitor, a Framework for the Next Generation Complete Water Analysis System for Crewed Vehicles Beyond the ISS

The Spacecraft Water Impurity Monitor (SWIM) is a joint collaboration to develop an instrument platform that will perform in-flight measurements and deliver a more complete picture of water quality to decision makers. Eventually, missions to the moon, Mars, and beyond will be equipped with analytical capabilities equaling those found in terrestrial labs. Based on what we know about current and future spacecraft environments, SWIM will seek to provide enhanced analytical capability that enables NASA to confidently send astronauts on distant missions without the possibility of returned water samples. This paper discusses the challenges presented by exploration requirements and the research and development progress toward the goal of a total water analysis system. For organic analysis, one of the analysis technologies that the SWIM team have been developing is a liquid-injection gas chromatograph mass spectrometer system; these systems are the workhorses of analytical chemistry laboratories world-wide. For inorganic analysis, the team is exploring a number of technologies ranging from traditional liquid chromatography technologies (e.g. ion chromatography, capillary electrophoresis) to flight-heritage technology such as ion-specific electrodes.

World’s Largest Liquid Hydrogen Tank Nearing Completion

Construction of the world’s largest liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ) storage tank is almost complete at launch pad 39B at NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. With a usable capacity of 4732 m 3 (1.25 Mgal), this new vessel is roughly 50% larger than its sister tank, which is located 170 m (550 ft) to the southeast. Once the new sphere is fully commissioned these two tanks will provide a combined LH 2 storage capacity of 7950 m 3 (2.1 Mgal) to fuel the new Space Launch System rocket in support of future Artemis exploration missions to the Moon and Mars.

This Performance Monitoring and Construction Completion Report (PM-CCR) presents the findings, observations, and results for air sparging (AS) operations and sitewide groundwater monitoring for Launch Complex 39A (LC39A), Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) 008, and Launch Complex 39B (LC39B), SWMU 009, at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida. Results from direct push technology (DPT) sampling and AS system expansion activities at LC39A are also included in this report. The reporting period covered under this PM-CCR is from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021.

Progress on the Organic and Inorganic Modules of the Spacecraft Water Impurity Monitor, a Next Generation Complete Water Analysis System for Crewed Vehicles

The Spacecraft Water Impurity Monitor (SWIM) is a joint collaboration to develop an instrument platform that will perform in-flight measurements and deliver a more complete picture of water quality to decision makers. For exploration missions, returned water samples will not be an option, so spacecraft and habitats will need to be equipped with advanced water monitoring capabilities. Eventually, missions to the moon, Mars, and beyond should be equipped with analytical capabilities roughly analogous to those found in terrestrial labs. Based on what we know about current and future spacecraft environments, SWIM will seek to provide enhanced analytical capability that enables NASA to confidently send astronauts on distant missions without the possibility of returned water samples. The SWIM architecture can be broken down in an Organic Water Module (OWM) and an Inorganic Water Module (IWM), independent of each other but can be flown together if desired; an integrated system may share some commonality, e.g., single sample injection, sampling consumables, waste, etc. Each of these main modules can be broken down further into separation (if required) and detection modules. And, each separation module can be paired with one or more detection module depending on mission, spacecraft, customer needs, and size/mass/power constraints. This paper discusses the research and development progress toward the goal of a total water analysis system. Systematic Kmtnet Planetary Anomaly Search V. Complete Sample of 2018 Prime-Field

We complete the analysis of all 2018 prime-field microlensing planets identified by the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) Anomaly Finder. Among the ten previously unpublished events with clear planetary solutions, eight are either unambiguously planetary or are very likely to be planetary in nature: OGLE-2018-BLG-1126, KMT-2018-BLG-2004, OGLE-2018-BLG-1647, OGLE-2018-BLG-1367, OGLE-2018-BLG-1544, OGLE-2018-BLG-0932, OGLE-2018-BLG-1212, and KMT-2018-BLG-2718. Combined with the four previously published new Anomaly Finder events and 12 previously published (or in preparation) planets that were discovered by eye, this makes a total of 24 2018 prime-field planets discovered or recovered by Anomaly Finder. Together with a paper in preparation on 2018 subprime planets, this work lays the basis for the first statistical analysis of the planet mass-ratio function based on planets identified in KMTNet data. By systematically applying the heuristic analysis to each event, we identified the small modification in their formalism that is needed to unify the so-called close-wide and inner-outer degeneracies.

Paint and Oil Locker, SWMU 067 Southern Treatment Area Air Sparge System Construction Completion and Performance Monitoring and Paint and Oil Locker, Northern Area (SWMU 067) and Supply Warehouse #3, SWMU 088 Long-Term Monitoring Report Kennedy Space Center, Florida

This Air Sparge (AS) System Construction Completion, Performance Monitoring, and Long-Term Monitoring (LTM) Report presents activities conducted at the Paint and Oil Locker (POL) (Solid Waste Management Unit [SWMU] 067) and Supply Warehouse #3 (SW3) (SWMU 088) sites located at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida. Activities include implementation and Year 1 (Quarters [Q] 1 through 4) and Q5 operation, maintenance, and monitoring (OM&M) activities and performance monitoring results for the AS Interim Measure (IM) in the POL Southern Treatment Area, LTM results for the POL Northern Area and SW3, and supplemental direct push technology (DPT) sampling at both sites to support the LTM and performance monitoring programs. The timeframe for activities included in this report extends from August 2019 to August 2022. The scope for these sites currently includes two main components, which are documented within this report: (1) LTM at SW3 and POL Northern Area where an AS system began operation at these sites in May 2009 and June 2013, respectively, and subsequently turned off for both sites in March 2018 (during the previous reporting period); and (2) Active AS operations and performance monitoring in the POL Southern Treatment Area where an AS system was installed and began operation in 2021. The AS IM in the POL Southern Treatment Area was implemented between 2019 and 2021 to treat a chlorinated solvent groundwater plume that resulted from historic operations supporting the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Space Program. The objective of the AS IM is to remediate groundwater within the treatment zone to support transition to monitored natural attenuation (MNA). The overall Corrective Action objective is to reduce concentrations of trichloroethene (TCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE), trans-1,2- dichloroethene (tDCE), and vinyl chloride (VC) present in groundwater to levels below their respective State of Florida Groundwater Cleanup Target Levels (GCTLs). The AS IM was installed in the POL Southern Treatment Area to target the high concentration plume (HCP), which includes a source zone (SZ) area where TCE was found to exceed 11,000 micrograms per liter (µg/L), and extend to a depth of 30 feet below land surface (bls).

The Completion of a Geosynchronous Earth Orbit Survey with the Eugene Stansbery-Meter Class Autonomous Telescope

The Eugene Stansbery-Meter Class Autonomous Telescope (ES-MCAT) is the primary optical sensor used by the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office (ODPO) to statistically characterize the geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) debris environment and support future Orbital Debris Engineering Model (ORDEM) releases. The ES-MCAT completed its first optical survey of the GEO region from 2020 to 2022. The primary goal of this survey was to autonomously collect and process GEO data with calculated photometric and astrometric uncertainties. A pointing plan was developed to provide uniform sampling within the region of interest (ROI) while accounting for predicted downtime due to insufficient observing conditions. Detections are autonomously correlated to the Space Surveillance Network (SSN) catalog to determine if objects are correlated targets (CTs) or uncorrelated targets (UCTs), the latter of which are of interest for modeling the GEO orbital debris environment. To assess the size detection sensitivity over time and monitor the general performance of the telescope’s optics and software, the optical throughput of the system and limiting magnitudes are evaluated on a routine basis. While the telescope’s ability to operate autonomously and remotely allowed for the GEO survey to continue throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions hampered routine cleaning of the optics during this time, and the primary mirror degraded enough to require recoating. The mirror was removed in 2022, concluding the first GEO survey. The primary mirror received a new coating designed to be more robust against the harsh environment surrounding the ES-MCAT’s location on Ascension Island, accounting for experience gained during operations over the first GEO survey. In early 2023, the recoated primary mirror was reinstalled, and the second GEO survey was initiated. The primary goal of the second GEO survey is to characterize the evolving GEO debris environment with updated optics, software, and pointing strategies while allowing for the inclusion of non-GEO regimes or those that are outside of the ROI. While the pointing method implemented in the first survey allowed for adequate coverage of the ROI over two years, it has been improved to include pointings that avoid the Moon’s position and the galactic plane to reduce software processing time and maximize the detection capabilities of fainter objects. This method also accounts for the changing weather patterns throughout the year and reduces coverage gaps in the ROI. Provided the success of the first two-year GEO survey using autonomous operations, the ODPO is actively collaborating with the United States Space Force (USSF) to make the ES-MCAT a contributing sensor to the SSN. This paper presents results from the first GEO survey including magnitude distributions and orbital parameters for CTs and UCTs. Details are provided for the automated processing pipeline and the optical system throughput for the previous and current primary mirror coatings. In addition, an updated strategy for the second GEO survey to optimize coverage over the ROI is discussed, as are preliminary results from the ongoing second survey.

Astrobee: Completed, Current, and Future Research Using Free Flying Robots on the International Space Station

After four years on the International Space Station (ISS), the Astrobee Research Facility, has completed over 130 Test Sessions logging over 1000 hours of operations. Managed by the NASA ISS Program OZ office and supported by NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) in California, the Astrobee Team maintains three identical free-flying Astrobee robots for research on the ISS. As a technology demonstration platform, the Astrobee Robots are available for Guest Scientists to use for a spectrum of research capabilities.

The Completion of a Geosynchronous Earth Orbit Survey with the Eugene Stansbery-Meter Class Autonomous Telescope

Completion of NASA’s Two-Year Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) Experiment Program

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) completed its two-year experiment program in June 2024. The LCRD geosynchronous payload includes two laser communications terminals interconnected via an onboard electronic switch. The payload relays data between two optical ground stations located in California and Hawaii and can also exchange data with an RF ground station in New Mexico. The addition of the Integrated LCRD Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) User Modem and Amplifier Terminal (ILLUMA-T) on the International Space Station in 2023 enabled data relay demonstrations between a laser terminal in low Earth orbit and either one of the optical ground stations or the RF ground station. The experiment program has included a variety of experiments originating within the LCRD project, NASA, and industry. The experiments have included measurements of the effects of the atmospheric optical channel (turbulence, weather) on the performance and availability of laser communications, adaptive optics characterization, demonstration of optimetrics techniques, and demonstration of Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN). Furthermore, various future operational scenarios including robotic and exploration missions and various network service configurations have been emulated. This conference paper provides an overview and highlights of the LCRD experiment program with an emphasis on activities and results since the start of the ILLUMA-T testing in December 2023. A discussion of the expectations for the next phase of the LCRD mission, as well as how LCRD results may be applied to future applications is also included. LCRD is a joint project involving NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), the California Institute of Technology Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory (MIT LL).

Progress towards the completion of the proton power upgrade project

The Proton Power Upgrade project at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will increase the proton beam power capability from 1.4 to 2.8 MW. Upon completion in early 2025, 2 MW of beam power will be available for neutron production at the existing first target station (FTS) with the remaining beam power available for the future second target station (STS). The project has installed seven superconducting radio-frequency (RF) cryomodules and supporting RF power systems to increase the beam energy by 30% to 1.3 GeV, and the beam current will be increased by 50%. The injection and extraction region of the accumulator ring are being upgraded, and a new 2 MW mercury target has been developed along with supporting equipment for high-flow gas injection to mitigate cavitation and fatigue stress. The first four cryomodules and supporting systems were commissioned in 2022-2023 and supported neutron production at 1.05 GeV, 1.7 MW with high reliability. The first-article 2 MW target was operated successfully for approximately 4400 MW-Hours over two run periods. The long outage began in August 2023 for installation of the remaining technical equipment and construction of the Ring-to-Target Beam Transport tunnel stub that will enable connection to the STS without interrupting operation of the FTS. The upgrade is proceeding on-schedule and on-budget, and resumption of neutron production for the user program is planned for July 2024.
