Reconstruction of 3D Concrete Microstructures Combining High-Resolution Characterization and Convolutional Neural Network for Image Segmentation

After water, concrete is the second most used material in the world. Concrete’s forming adaptability and low-cost constituents make it a predominant material used in the construction of civil infrastructures in nuclear power plants such as concrete biological shields, containment buildings, turbine buildings, fuel handling and storage buildings, underground piping for cooling, cooling towers, and so on. Depending on environmental and operating conditions, these passive structures are subject to time-dependent phenomena that can either enhance (e.g., continued hydration) or degrade concrete’s structural performance. Unlike components such as the reactor pressure vessel and the primary circuit, concrete composition varies regionally because it is manufactured using local aggregates and cement. Hence, concrete performance metrics over time cannot be derived confidently using empirical relations. Alternatively, the specific characteristics of the local concrete constituents and their assemblage in concrete must be considered.

Facial Named Entity Recognition by Attention-Based Graph Convolutional Neural Network

In the realm of facial recognition and analysis, the ability to accurately cluster large datasets of facial images stands as a cornerstone for various applications, ranging from security surveillance to user biometric identification. This project evolves a novel approach to facial data clustering by embedding facial images into a high-dimensional vector space using an advanced embedding model trained on separate data and assumes a graph-like structure on the high-dimensional vectors. We find our method works significantly better than common shallow methods.

Event Classifications on DNE2 Main Experiment Data using a Convolutional Neural Network Ensemble

The Dynamic Networks (DN) Experiment for FY24 (DNE2) is an experiment within DN with the goal of quantitatively evaluating the effectiveness of solutions developed so far by various researchers under the Low Yield Nuclear Monitoring (LYNM) program using a shared set of metrics and datasets. A key component of this experiment is the mimicking of a signature processing pipeline, and comparing currently accepted and standard-use processing methods to more state-of-the-art processes developed under DN. In this work, we focus specifically on the Event Characterization (EC) Focus Area (FA) of the pipeline, where a seismic event’s magnitude, yield and class are identified. We use Deep Learning (DL) to classify the type of events being processed as either earthquakes (EQs) or explosions (EXs) for three iterations of experiment datasets. The model is noticeably more confident and accurate in classifying explosions than earthquakes, reflecting a known shortcoming of the model, that being of a bias towards predicting explosions over earthquakes in the west coast due to training data biases.

The Application of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to Recognize Defects in 3D-Printed Parts

Cracks and pores are two common defects in metallic additive manufacturing (AM) parts. In this paper, deep learning-based image analysis is performed for defect (cracks and pores) classification/detection based on SEM images of metallic AM parts. Three different levels of complexities, namely, defect classification, defect detection and defect image segmentation, are successfully achieved using a simple CNN model, the YOLOv4 model and the Detectron2 object detection library, respectively. The tuned CNN model can classify any single defect as either a crack or pore at almost 100% accuracy. The other two models can identify more than 90% of the cracks and pores in the testing images. In addition to the application of static image analysis, defect detection is also successfully applied on a video which mimics the AM process control images. The trained Detectron2 model can identify almost all the pores and cracks that exist in the original video. This study lays a foundation for future in situ process monitoring of the 3D printing process.

1D-Convolutional Neural Network Architecture for Generalized Time-Segmentation Tasks

Time segmentation of experimental data is a common and often difficult task. Consequently, it is of interest to automate this type of segmentation to reduce manual inputs, which are labor intensive and less consistent. However, simple thresholding algorithms are often insufficiently robust due either to noise or inconsistent data. This paper proposes a simple 1D CNN architecture as a generalized solution for typical time segmentation tasks. The layer architecture, training methods, and methods for simple customization are described as well as the results of application to three separate arc jet data streams: facility condition segmentation, video highlight segmentation, and calorimeter time-series segmentation.
