High oxygen pressure floating zone growth and crystal structure of the metallic nickelates R4Ni3O10 ( R=La,Pr )

Single crystals of the metallic Ruddlesden-Popper trilayer nickelates R 4 Ni 3 O 10 ( R = La , Pr ) were successfully grown using an optical-image floating zone furnace under oxygen pressure ( p O 2 ) of 20 bar for La 4 Ni 3 O 10 and 140 bar for Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 . Furthermore, a combination of synchrotron and laboratory x-ray single-crystal diffraction, high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and measurements of physical properties revealed that R 4 Ni 3 O 10 ( R = La , Pr ) crystallizes in the monoclinic P 2 1 / a ( Z = 2 ) space group at room temperature, and that a metastable orthorhombic phase ( Bmab ) can be trapped by postgrowth rapid cooling. Both La 4 Ni 3 O 10 and Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 crystals undergo a metal-to-metal transition (MMT) below room temperature. In the case of Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 , the MMT is found at 157.6 K. For La 4 Ni 3 O 10 , the MMT depends on the lattice symmetry: 147.5 K for Bmab vs 138.6 K for P 2 1 / a . Lattice anomalies were found at the MMT that, when considered together with the pronounced dependence of the transition temperature on subtle structural differences between Bmab and P 2 1 / a phases, demonstrate a not insignificant coupling between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in these trilayer nickelates.

Crystal structure of hexachlorothallate within a caesium chloride–phosphotungstate lattice Cs 9 (TlCl 6 )(PW 12 O 40 ) 2 ·9CsCl

Crystal formation of caesium thallium chloride phosphotungstates, Cs 9 (TlCl 6 )(PW 12 O 40 ) 2 ·9CsCl showcases the ability to capture and crystallize octahedral complexes via the use of polyoxometalates (POMs). The large number of caesium chlorides allows for the POM [α-PW 12 O 40 ] 3- to arrange itself in a cubic close-packing lattice extended framework, in which the voids created enable the capture of the [TlCl 6 ] 3- complex.

Effects of Ice-Crystal Structure on Halo Formation: Cirrus Cloud Experimental and Ray-Tracing Modeling Studies

During the 1986 Project FIRE (First International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project Regional Experiment) field campaign, four 22 deg halo-producing cirrus clouds were studied jointly from a ground-based polarization lidar and an instrumented aircraft. The lidar data show the vertical cloud structure and the relative position of the aircraft, which collected a total of 84 slides by impaction, preserving the ice crystals for later microscopic examination. Although many particles were too fragile to survive impaction intact, a large fraction of the identifiable crystals were columns and radial bullet rosettes, with both displaying internal cavitations and radial plate-column combinations. Particles that were solid or displayed only a slight amount of internal structure were relatively rare, which shows that the usual model postulated by halo theorists, i.e., the randomly oriented, solid hexagonal crystal, is inappropriate for typical cirrus clouds. With the aid of new ray-tracing simulations for hexagonal hollow-ended column and bullet-rosette models, we evaluate the effects of more realistic ice-crystal structures on halo formation and lidar depolarization and consider why the common halo is not more common in cirrus clouds.

Crystal structure of N-terminally hexahistidine-tagged Onchocerca volvulus macrophage migration inhibitory factor-1

Onchocerca volvulus causes blindness, onchocerciasis, skin infections and devastating neurological diseases such as nodding syndrome. New treatments are needed because the currently used drug, ivermectin, is contraindicated in pregnant women and those co-infected with Loa loa . The Seattle Structural Genomics Center for Infectious Disease (SSGCID) produced, crystallized and determined the apo structure of N-terminally hexahistidine-tagged O. volvulus macrophage migration inhibitory factor-1 (His- Ov MIF-1). Ov MIF-1 is a possible drug target. His- Ov MIF-1 has a unique jellyfish-like structure with a prototypical macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) trimer as the `head' and a unique C-terminal `tail'. Deleting the N-terminal tag reveals an Ov MIF-1 structure with a larger cavity than that observed in human MIF that can be targeted for drug repurposing and discovery. Removal of the tag will be necessary to determine the actual biological oligomer of Ov MIF-1 because size-exclusion chomatographic analysis of His- Ov MIF-1 suggests a monomer, while PISA analysis suggests a hexamer stabilized by the unique C-terminal tails.

Stacking faults and alternate crystal structures for the shape-memory alloy NiTi

Here, we use ab initio calculations to study the role of stacking faults in connecting the high-temperature B2 and the theoretically predicted low-temperature B33 NiTi phases. In contrast with prior work, we describe the B 2 → B 33 phase transformation in terms of alternate bilayer shifts by 1 2 [100] on the ( 011 ) B 2 plane, obtaining a viable pathway; the same mechanism could also work with the B19 parent phase. We then examine B33-like structures built from alternate stacking sequences of B19 bilayers, constructed to have monoclinic tilt angles close to the experimentally reported NiTi B19' martensite, and find four low-energy stacking-fault variants with energies 5.8–8.5 meV/atom above the calculated B19' martensite structure, suggesting that such structures might appear as a part of the NiTi martensite phase at low temperatures. Investigating further the occurrence of specific coordinated planar shifts in NiTi systems, we report a dynamically stable NiTi B27 phase and find that it is only 1.2 meV/atom above the calculated B33 ground-state structure, thus having a potential to also play a role in NiTi martensitic phase transformation.

Crystal Structure and C–H Bond-Cleaving Reactivity of a Mononuclear Co IV –Dinitrate Complex

High-valent Fe IV =O intermediates with a terminal metal–oxo moiety are key oxidants in many enzymatic and synthetic C–H bond oxidation reactions. While generating stable metal–oxo species for late transition metals remains synthetically challenging, notably, a number of high-valent non-oxo–metal species of late transition metals have been recently described as strong oxidants that activate C–H bonds. In this work, we obtained an unprecedented mononuclear Co IV –dinitrate complex (2) upon one-electron oxidation of its Co(III) precursor supported by a tridentate dianionic N3 ligand. 2 was structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, showing a square pyramidal geometry with two coordinated nitrate anions. Furthermore, characterization of 2 using combined spectroscopic and computational methods revealed that 2 is a low-spin (S = 1/2) Co(IV) species with the unpaired electron located on the cobalt d z2 orbital, which is well positioned for substrate oxidations. Indeed, while having a high thermal stability, 2 is able to cleave sp 3 C–H bonds up to 87 kcal/mol to afford rate constants and kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) of 2–6 that are comparable to other high-valent metal oxidants. The ability to oxidize strong C–H bonds has yet to be observed for Co IV –O and Co III =O species previously reported. Therefore, 2 represents the first high-valent Co(IV) species that is both structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and capable of activating strong C–H bonds.

Crystal structures and rotational dynamics of a two-dimensional metal halide perovskite (OA) 2 PbI 4

The extended charge carrier lifetime in metal halide perovskites is responsible for their excellent optoelectronic properties. Recent studies indicate that the superb device performance in these materials is intimately related to the organic cation dynamics. Here, we focus on the investigation of the two-dimensional hybrid perovskite, (C 8 H 17 NH 3 ) 2 PbI 4 (henceforth, OA + = C 8 H 17 NH 3 + ). Using elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering techniques and group theoretical analysis, we studied the structural phase transitions and rotational modes of the C 8 H 17 NH 3 + cation in (OA) 2 PbI 4 . Here, our results show that, in the high-temperature orthorhombic ( T > 310 K) phase, the OA + cation exhibits a combination of a twofold rotation of the NH 3 –CH 2 head group about the crystal c -axis with a characteristic relaxation time of ~6.2 ps, threefold rotations (C 3 ) of NH 3 and CH 3 terminal groups, and slow librations of the other atoms. Contrastingly, only the C 3 rotation is present in the intermediate-temperature orthorhombic (238 K < T < 310 K) and low-temperature monoclinic ( T < 238 K) phases.

Deciphering the crystal structure of a novel nanobody against the NEIL1 DNA glycosylase

Nanobodies (VHHs) are single-domain antibodies with three antigenic CDR regions and are used in diverse scientific applications. Here, an ∼14 kDa nanobody (A5) specific for the endonuclease VIII (Nei)-like 1 or NEIL1 DNA glycosylase involved in the first step of the base-excision repair pathway was crystallized and its structure was determined to 2.1 Å resolution. The crystals posed challenges due to potential twinning and anisotropic diffraction. Despite inconclusive twinning indicators, reprocessing in an orthorhombic setting and molecular replacement in space groupP2 1 2 1 2 enabled the successful modeling of 96% of residues in the asymmetric unit, with finalR work andR free values of 0.199 and 0.229, respectively.

Robust magnetism and crystal structure in Dirac semimetal EuMnBi 2 under high pressure

Dirac materials offer exciting opportunities to explore low-energy carrier dynamics and novel physical phenomena, especially their interaction with magnetism. In this context, this work focuses on studies of pressure control on the magnetic state of EuMnBi 2 , a representative magnetic Dirac semimetal, through time-domain synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy in 151 Eu. Contrary to the previous report that the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed by pressure above 4 GPa, we have observed robust magnetic order up to 33.1 GPa. Synchrotron-based x-ray diffraction experiment on a pure EuMnBi 2 sample shows that the tetragonal crystal lattice remains stable up to at least 31.7 GPa.
