My vehicle is a data mine

In this talk we explore how analysis of vehicle data provides information of individual vehicle behaviors, information of other vehicles in the flow of traffic, and insights into the behavior of drivers. Over the last two decades traditional passenger vehicles have been transformed from integrated two-port electrical nodes to cyber-physical systems of communicating computational nodes whose individual state and control variables are shared on a standard controller area network (CAN) bus. As driver assistance systems have crept into vehicles as safety features, driver behaviors can be observed through analysis of the data streams on the CAN bus as these new nodes communicate with one another. The properties of these data streams, as well as architectures and approaches to gather the data, are important to consider when drawing conclusions on the relevance of the data in making decisions at varying levels of the information hierarchy. We will demonstrate several technical challenges associated with these data collection processes, as well as preliminary results that demonstrate application relevance of the data to behavior, traffic, and systems domains.

CANShield: Signal-based Intrusion Detection for Controller Area Networks

Modern vehicles rely on complex cyber-physical systems made up of hundreds of electronic control units (ECUs) connected through controller area network (CAN) buses. However, the CAN bus attack surface is increasing due to advanced features in automobiles, making it prone to injection attacks. The ordinary injection attacks disrupt the typical timing properties of the CAN data stream, and the rule-based intrusion detection systems (IDS) can easily detect them. However, advanced attackers can inject false data to the signal level, maintaining the regular pattern/frequency of the CAN messages. Such attacks can bypass the rule-based IDS or any anomaly-based IDS built on binary payload data. To make the vehicles robust against such intelligent attacks, we propose CANShield, a signal-based intrusion detection framework for the CAN bus that consists of three modules. A data preprocessing module handles the high-dimensional CAN data stream at the signal level and make them suitable for any machine learning model. A data analyzer module consists of multiple deep autoencoder networks, each analyzing the time series data from a different perspective. Finally, an attack detection module uses an ensemble method to make the final decision. Evaluation results on a standard signal-based dataset show the effectiveness of the CANShield in detecting five advanced attacks.

A Research Testbed for Experimental Connectivity and Automation in Cars

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are engineered systems in which the computational components and physical components of the system are interdependent and deeply linked. Discovery and development of CPS technologies are changing the way people interact with engineered systems. To demonstrate this point, consider the Global Positioning System (GPS) which revolutionized personal mobility. Its research origins stem from the US Department of Defense in 1973 for military use. By 2000 limitations on civilian consumption of GPS service were lifted. Immediately, personal GPS products were shipped for in-car navigation systems. Soon after, GPS receivers were embedded into mobile phones with the introduction of the Nokia N95 and Apple iPhone for maps and turn-by-turn navigation. With the benefit of hindsight we can see that GPS has become a cornerstone technology of our daily life. Satellite-based navigation has gone from a radical space technology, to a matter of uninteresting availability; it is the typical way that people navigate through roadways now. The combination of the satellite infrastructure, the integration of receiver modules, and powerful maps applications has significantly changed mobility in the 21st century.

Design and Implementation of Full-Scale Industrial Control System Test Bed for Assessing Cyber-Security Defenses

In response to the increasing awareness of the Ethernet-based threat surface of industrial control systems (ICS), both the research and commercial communities are responding with ICS-specific security solutions. Unfortunately, many of the properties of ICS environments that contribute to the extent of this threat surface (e.g. age of devices, inability or unwillingness to patch, criticality of the system) similarly prevent the proper testing and evaluation of these security solutions. Production environments are often too fragile to introduce unvetted technology and most organizations lack test environments that are sufficiently consistent with production to yield actionable results. Cost and space requirements prevent the creation of mirrored physical environments leading many to look towards simulation or virtualization. Examples in literature provide various approaches to building ICS test beds, though most of these suffer from a lack of realism due to contrived scenarios, synthetic data and other compromises. In this paper, we provide a design methodology for building highly realistic ICS test beds for validating cybersecurity defenses. We then apply that methodology to the design and building of a specific test bed and describe the results and experimental use cases.

Cyber State Awareness For Resilience

Characterization of cyber-physical attacks requires a holistic understanding of cyber and physical behavior in a system. Machine Learning Anomaly Detection provides a compelling solution for continuously identifying suspicious behavior within these complex systems. In our software, we present an approach for holistic characterization of cyber-physical systems based on cyber and physical anomaly correlation. The approach consists of three main components: 1) an architecture for real-time data acquisition, management, and analysis of both cyber and physical data; 2) cyber and physical data driven anomaly detection systems (ADSs), 3) a metric that combines cyber and physical ADSs to provide a holistic characterization of the system..

System and method associated with expedient detection and reconstruction of cyber events in a compact scenario representation using provenance tags and customizable policy

A system associated with detecting a cyber-attack and reconstructing events associated with a cyber-attack campaign, is disclosed. The system performs various operations that include receiving an audit data stream associated with cyber events. The system identifies trustworthiness values in a portion of data associated with the cyber events and assigns provenance tags to the portion of the data based on the identified trustworthiness values. An initial visual representation is generated based on the assigned provenance tags to the portion of the data. The initial visual representation is condensed based on a backward traversal of the initial visual representation in identifying a shortest path from a suspect node to an entry point node. A scenario visual representation is generated that specifies nodes most relevant to the cyber events associated with the cyber-attack based on the identified shortest path.A corresponding method and computer-readable medium are also disclosed.

Assessing the Impact of Cybersecurity Attacks on Energy Systems

This paper investigates the cyber resiliency of future power systems with high penetration of distributed energy resources using advanced distributed and (or) hierarchical control architectures. Specifically, we simulate cyberattacks on three prototypical use cases, and we identify attack scenarios that are the most damaging to the overall system performance. We show that these attacks can have a significant impact on grid operation. Results provide additional insights into the robustness of the system to the most common cyberattacks.

Cyber threat assessment of machine learning driven autonomous control systems of nuclear power plants

We report advanced cyber-attacks against critical infrastructure and the energy sector are becoming more common. With the invention of autonomous control systems (ACS) within advanced nuclear reactor designs, system designers, reactor operators, and regulators must consider cybersecurity during the design and operational phases. This article provides a cyber threat assessment of machine learning (ML)-based digital twinning (DT) technologies in the context of advanced reactor ACS. A cyber–physical testbed was created to emulate nuclear reactor digital instrumentation and controls (I&C) and act as a basis for the ACS. The ACS was designed as two plant-level DTs predicting reactor malfunctions and determining control actions and two component-level DTs responsible for classifying component states and forecasting component inputs and outputs (I/O). Two duplicate ACS designs– one using a traditional ML framework and one using an automated ML (AutoML) framework– were created and tested against cyber-attacks on training data, real-time process data, and ML model architectures to determine their respective qualitative cyber-risk in terms of likelihood and impact. Both frameworks showed similar cyber-resilience against training, real-time, and ML architecture attacks, proving that neither is inherently more secure. Recommended safeguard and security measures are posed to system designers, reactor operators, and regulators to maintain the cybersecurity of ML-based DT technologies such as ACS, prompting a holistic view of shared responsibility for maintaining cyber-secure ML-based systems.

Cyber Risk Considerations for Nuclear Digital I&C Systems

Many engineers and scientists researching modeling and analysis methods for nuclear energy advancement are focused on proof-of-concept and early-stage development for new reactor designs. Since instrumentation and control (I&C) systems are traditionally developed later in the systems engineering lifecycle, researchers may be unfamiliar with modern digital technology used in these I&C systems. It is even more likely that they are unfamiliar with the cyber risks associated with them. This paper provides a brief overview of nuclear digital I&C systems before examining the importance of cyber risk management at nuclear reactors and the benefits of including Cyber-Informed Engineering throughout the systems engineering lifecycle. The primary goal is for engineers and scientists to develop a mindset that incorporates cybersecurity as another discipline alongside safety when designing and developing new technologies, regardless of technology readiness level.

ARCADE Analysis Methods & Validation Pathway

The Advanced Reactor Cyber Analysis and Development Environment (ARCADE) provides an automated analysis system which supports risk-informed performance based (RIPB) evaluations of nuclear control systems. Every possible cyber threat which could lead to consequence is identified by simulating the unsafe control action sequences which transform digital harm into physical harm. Eliminating the simulation of complex digital cyber attack chains cuts out unnecessary computational overhead and focuses directly on the physics of cyber-physical attacks. This focus enables designers to make informed decisions which can entirely eliminate categories of cyber threats against advanced reactors through the physical nature of the plant design. This narrowing of cyber threat against nuclear power plants through the physics of the system is intended to make any remaining threat management and cost efficient. This is the goal of the Tiered Cyber Analysis (TCA) outlined in NRC Draft Regulation Guide (RG) 5.96, which provides a RIPB cybersecurity approach for new reactors. ARCADE has been custom developed to meet the demands of the rigorous analysis required in Tier 1 of the TCA, which forms the foundation of the TCA process. Currently, ARCADE is still under development, but has made significant leaps in capability. A pilot analysis on the opensource Asherah simulator was performed which demonstrated key functionality goals. The next stage of ARCADE development involves improvements to the applications which support the analysis system, and enabling the analysis system to utilize the full suite of unsafe control action simulations. Since the analysis method’s core functions are complete, validation of the analysis method will be started concurrent to the next development stages. The automated analysis ARCADE will provide can radically change the cybersecurity design process for advanced reactors, reducing the cost of security implementation while enhancing cyber resilience. The pathway for ARCADE’s development to this goal has become much clearer. The majority of technical hurdles have been cleared, and the remaining development needs have been solidified. ARCADE is now capable of assisting the advanced reactor design process and directly support advanced reactor industry RIPB practices.

Quality datasets serve a critical purpose in cyber security research. Data is needed to understand system behavior and develop security controls to protect critical systems. However, for critical infrastructure operational environments there is a lack of available datasets to study because of the high cost and specialized capabilities necessary to generate them. This paper documents the development of a dataset of high fidelity hardware in the loop laboratory simulated models of electric and natural gas distribution systems with real cyber attack test cases. A deep dive discussion for the experimental setup and controls for generating the data is provided along with observations from using the data in evaluating intrusion detection approaches.

Epistemology of voltage control in DER-rich power system

Despite the recent development of several scalable, robust, and resilient control approaches with superior convergence properties considering an increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), cognitive oversights often simplify several aspects of the cyber–physical power system in the controller development. Here, following the identification of the limitations of classical controller definitions, we justify alternative definitions of voltage control approaches classifiers considering three inter-disciplinary domains: (i) power system, (ii) optimization and decision-making, and (iii) networking and cyber-security, to develop a taxonomy for helping in real-world comparative performance analysis and deployability of these controllers. We observe that classical and introduced domain-based definitions together can better classify the control algorithms.
