Thermal Transport Measurements of LaCoO{sub 3} and SrTiO{sub 3}

Thermal conductivity and thermopower measurements as functions of temperature were carried out on SrTiO{sub 3} single crystals below room temperature and compared to those obtained for LaCoO{sub 3} polycrystalline samples. The maximum value of thermal conductivity for SrTiO{sub 3} (110) and Nb-doped SrTiO{sub 3} single crystals was 1.09 and 0.91 W/mK, respectively, at 300 K. The thermopower measurements were − 5.47 and − 41.17 μ V/K, respectively, at 300 K. This indicates the predominance of negative charge carriers or electrons in the material. Measurements on LaCoO{sub 3} polycrystalline samples yielded maximum values of 0.37 W/mK and 620 μ V/K for thermal conductivity and thermopower, respectively. These positive values suggest that positive charge carriers are predominant or that the compound is slightly hole-doped. We studied the effect of Nb doping on the thermopower and thermal conductivity of SrTiO{sub 3} and contrasted the results obtained with similar measurements on LaCoO{sub 3}.

Effect of W and WC on the oxidation resistance of yttria-doped silicon nitride

The effect of tungsten and tungsten carbide contamination on the oxidation and cracking in air of yttria-doped silicon nitride ceramics is investigated. Silicon nitride powder containing 8 wt % Y2O3 was doped with 2 wt % W, 4 wt % W, 2 wt % WC or left undoped, and sintered in order to simulate contamination during milling, and specimens were exposed in air to 500, 750 and 1350 C for various lengths of time. Scanning electron and optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction of the specimens in the as-sintered state reveals that the addition of W or WC does not affect the phase relationships in the system, composed of alpha and beta Si3N4, melilite and an amorphous phase. Catastrophic oxidation is observed at 750 C in specimens containing 2 and 4 wt % W, accompanied by the disappearance of alpha Si3N4 and melilite from the structure. At 1350 C, the formation of a protective glassy oxide layer was observed on all specimens without catastrophic oxidation, and it is found that pre-oxidation at 1350 C also improved the oxidation resistance at 750 C of bars doped with 4 wt % W. It is suggested that tungsten contamination from WC grinding balls may be the major cause of the intermediate-temperature cracking and instability frequently observed in Si3N4-8Y2O3.

Ligand removal energetics control CO 2 electroreduction selectivity on atomically precise, ligated alloy nanoclusters

Atomically precise, thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (TPNCs) exhibit remarkable catalytic performance for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 R) to CO. The origin of their high CO 2 R activity and selectivity has been attributed to partial ligand removal from the thiolate-covered surfaces of TPNCs to expose catalytically active sulfur atoms. Recently, heterometal doped (alloy) TPNCs have been shown to exhibit enhanced CO 2 R activity and selectivity compared to their monometallic counterparts. However, systematic studies on the effect of doping (metal type and location on TPNC) on active site exposure and CO 2 R activity are missing in literature. Herein, we apply Density Functional Theory calculations to investigate the effect of heterometal (Pt, Pd, Hg and Cd) doping of Au 25 (SR) 18 TPNC on the active site exposure and CO 2 R activity and selectivity. In this study, we reveal that doping significantly modifies relevant TPNC electronic properties, such as electron affinity, while also altering partial ligand removal and carboxyl (*COOH) intermediate formation energies. Furthermore, we demonstrate that changing the dopant (e.g. Hg) position can change the selectivity of the TPNC towards CO (g) or H 2(g) formation, highlighting the importance of dopant locations in TPNC-based CO 2 R. Most notably, we report a universal (i.e. capturing different dopant types and positions) linear trend between the ligand removal energy and i) the *COOH formation energy, as well as, ii) the hydrogen (*H) formation energy on the different alloy TPNCs. Thus, utilizing the ligand removal energy as a descriptor for CO 2 RR activity and selectivity, our work opens new avenues for accelerated computational screening of different alloy TPNCs for electrocatalytic CO 2 R applications.

Lattice defects in semiconducting Hg/1-x/Cd/x/Te alloys. I - Defect structure of undoped and copper doped Hg/0.8/Cd/0.2/Te. II - Defect structure of indium-doped Hg/0.8/Cd/0.2/Te

Hall effect and mobility measurements were conducted on undoped Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Te crystals which were quenched to room temperature after being subjected to equilibration at temperatures ranging from 400 to 655 C in various Hg atmospheres. The variation of the hole concentration in the cooled crystals at 77 K as a function of Hg's partial pressure at the equilibration temperature, together with a comparison of the hole mobility in the undoped samples with that in copper-doped ones, yields a defect model for the undoped crystals according to which they are intrinsic at the equilibration temperatures and the native acceptor defects are doubly ionized. In the second part of this paper, the effects of indium doping are considered. The concentration of electrons obtained in the cooled crystals was found to be lower than the intrinsic carrier concentration at the equilibration temperatures. A defect model is proposed according to which most of the indium is incorporated as In2Te3(s) dissolved in the crystal, with only a small fraction of indium acting as single donors occupying Hg lattice sites.

Enhanced Density-of-States Effective Mass and Strained Endotaxial Nanostructures in Sb-Doped Pb 0.97 Cd 0.03 Te Thermoelectric Alloys

Here we report that CdTe alloying and Sb doping increase the density-of-states effective mass and introduce endotaxial nanostructuring in n-type PbTe, resulting in enhanced thermoelectric performance. A prior theoretical prediction for the presence of resonance states in the conduction band of this system, however, could not be confirmed. An amount of 3 mol % CdTe alloying widens the band gap of PbTe by 50%, leading to enhanced carrier effective mass and Seebeck coefficient. This effect is even more pronounced at high temperatures where the solubility of CdTe increases. At 800 K, when the carrier concentration is the same (4 × 10 19 cm -3 ), the Seebeck coefficient of CdTe-alloyed PbTe is -195 μV K -1 , 16% higher than that of the Cd-free control sample (-168 μV K -1 ). Sb doping considerably increases the electron concentration of Pb 0.97 Cd 0.03 Te, giving rise to optimized power factors of ~17 μW cm -1 K -2 at 800 K. More importantly, Sb induces strained endotaxial nanostructures evenly distributed in the matrix. Furthermore, these Sb-rich nanostructures account for the ~40% reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity over the whole measured temperature range. As a result, a maximum ZT of 1.2 is attained at 750 K in 0.5 mol % Sb-doped Pb 0.97 Cd 0.03 Te alloys.

Synthesis, structural and dielectric properties of Ce-doped lead lanthanum titanate

Highlights: • The effect of Ce doping on the structural, dielectric properties and ac conductivity of Pb{sub 0.79-x}Ce{sub x}La{sub 0.21}TiO{sub 3} was studied. • A pseudo-cubic single phase was observed for all samples. • The phase transition temperature is found to decrease with increasing Ce content. • Change of the nature of Pb{sub 0.79}La{sub 0.21}TiO{sub 3} phase transition upon Ce-doping. • Several essential dielectric parameters were extracted. - Abstract: The influence of Ce doping on the structural, dielectric and ac conductivity properties of Pb{sub 0.79-x}Ce{sub x}La{sub 0.21}TiO{sub 3} powders (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.1) was investigated. X-ray diffraction shows that all samples have the pseudo-cubic crystal structure, in which the tetragonality and cell volume decrease with increasing Ce content. The change of the dielectric constant as a function of temperature demonstrates that the phase transition temperature decreases with the increase of Ce content. Normal behavior of the phase transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric was observed for Ce-doped samples, while the undoped powders exhibit a combination of diffuse phase transition and relaxor behaviors. From electrical conductivity versus 1/T plots, we have determined the activation energy, which was found to increase with increasing Ce concentration.

Effect of W and WC on the oxidation resistance of yttria-doped silicon nitride

The effect of W and WC contamination on the oxidation and cracking in air of sintered Si3N4 - 8 w/o Y2O3 ceramics at 500, 750, and 1350 C is examined. A mixture of Si3N4 - 8Y2O3, milled with alumina balls, was divided into four portions. Three portions were doped with 2 w/o WC W, and 4 w/o W respectively, in order to simulate contamination during milling. The fourth portion was undoped and used on a control. The addition of W or WC did not affect the phase relationships in the system, as all bars with or without additions contained melilite as the major Si-Y-O-N phase after sintering. At 750 C, instability (rapid oxidation and cracking) of W-doped bars appears to have occurred as a result of oxidation of the tungsten containing melilite phase. No intermediate temperature instability was observed in bars containing 2 w/o WC or in bars with no additive. Specimens exposed at 1350 C had good oxidation resistance due to the formation of a protective siliceous oxide layer. A specimen containing 4 w/o W which was preoxidized at 1350 C had improved oxidation resistance at 750 C. The tendency towards oxidation and cracking of Si3N4 - 8 Y2O3 at 750 C is concluded to be related to tungsten content of the sintered bars.

Effect of 1 MeV electrons on ceria-doped solar cell cover glass

The effect of 1 MeV electrons on the transmission properties of 1.5-percent ceria-doped solar cell cover glass was studied. Samples of doped and undoped cover glass and synthetic fused silica were irradiated with a total integrated flux of 10 to the 15th power e/sq cm. Wideband transmission and spectral transmission measurements were made before and after irradiation. The results indicate that 1.5-percent ceria-doped cover glass is much less sensitive to radiation induced discoloration than undoped cover glass. Consequently, the glass is comparable to synthetic fused silica when used as a radiation resistant solar cell cover for many space missions.

Sb-Doped SnO 2 Nanorods Underlayer Effect to the α-Fe 2 O 3 Nanorods Sheathed with TiO 2 for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

In this paper, a Sb-doped SnO 2 (ATO) nanorod underneath an α-Fe 2 O 3 nanorod sheathed with TiO 2 for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is reported. The experimental results, corroborated with theoretical analysis, demonstrate that the ATO nanorod underlayer effect on the α-Fe 2 O 3 nanorod sheathed with TiO 2 enhances the PEC water splitting performance. The growth of the well-defined ATO nanorods is reported as a conductive underlayer to improve α-Fe 2 O 3 PEC water oxidation performance. The α-Fe 2 O 3 nanorods grown on the ATO nanorods exhibit improved performance for PEC water oxidation compared to α-Fe 2 O 3 grown on flat fluorine-doped tin oxide glass. Furthermore, a simple and facile TiCl 4 chemical treatment further introduces TiO 2 passivation layer formation on the α-Fe 2 O 3 to reduce surface recombination. Finally, as a result, these unique nanostructures show dramatically improved photocurrent density (139% higher than that of the pure hematite nanorods).

Full characterization of ultrathin 5-nm low-k dielectric bilayers: Influence of dopants and surfaces on the mechanical properties

Ultrathin films and multilayers, with controlled thickness down to single atomic layers, are critical for advanced technologies ranging from nanoelectronics to spintronics to quantum devices. However, for thicknesses less than 10 nm, surfaces and dopants contribute significantly to the film properties, which can differ dramatically from that of bulk materials. Therefore, for amorphous films being developed as low dielectric constant interfaces for nanoelectronics, the presence of surfaces or dopants can soften films and degrade their mechanical performance. Here we use coherent short-wavelength light to fully and nondestructively characterize the mechanical properties of individual films as thin as 5 nm within a bilayer. In general, we find that the mechanical properties depend both on the amount of doping and the presence of surfaces. In very thin (5-nm) silicon carbide bilayers with low hydrogen doping, surface effects induce a substantial softening - by almost an order of magnitude - compared with the same doping in thicker (46-nm) bilayers. These findings are important for informed design of ultrathin films for a host of nano- and quantum technologies, and for improving the switching speed and efficiency of next-generation electronics.

Magnetic Field Effects on Optical Conductivity of Doped Armchair Graphene Nanoribbon

We address the optical conductivity of armchair graphene nanoribbon within tight-binding model Hamiltonian using Green’s function approach. The possible effects of ribbon width, magnetic field, and chemical potential on optical absorption are investigated. We have also found the dependence of the optical conductivity for various ribbon widths and chemical potentials. Our results show a peak appears in the frequency dependence of optical conductivity of graphene nanoribbon. Upon increasing ribbon width, the height of the optical conductivity at frequency of peak increases. Also, applying the magnetic field causes an increase of the optical conductivity. However, upon more increase of the magnetic field leads to a decrease of the optical conductivity. Moreover, we study the effects of chemical potentials on frequency behavior of optical absorption of graphene nanoribbon for both metallic and insulator cases.

Magnetic and transport properties of Fe-doped Weyl semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2

Ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 has recently attracted a lot of interest on account of its large non-saturating magnetoresistance and the high carrier mobility common to topological semimetals. Moreover, the material also provides a platform for studying the interplay between the intrinsic magnetism and topological band structures, which generates a significant anomalous Hall effect. Chemical doping is the usual approach to adjust materials’ properties, and it can lead to fascinating results. Here, we present the influence of Fe-doping on the magnetic and transport properties of polycrystalline Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 . The Fe-doping suppresses the sample’s magnetic order, increases the electrical resistivity, results in a skew-scattering contribution to the anomalous Hall effect and Fe impurities cause the Kondo effect. In addition, we report on the impact of Fe-doping on the magnetoresistance of Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , where Fe-doping leads to a dramatic decline in magnetoresistance. Furthermore, the hysteresis behavior in the low magnetic field region, detected previously in nanoflake samples only, is observed in both pure and Fe-doped Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 bulk samples. Finally, our findings serve as a reference and source of inspiration for future chemical doping research on topological semimetals.

Longitudinal Magnetic Field Effects on Thermal Transport of Doped Bilayer Graphene

We address thermal conductivity of doped biased bilayer graphene for AA-stacking in the context of tight binding model hamiltonian. The effect of magnetic field as its direction is along perpendicular to graphene plane on thermal conductivity has been investigated. Green’s function approach has been implemented to find the behavior of thermal conductivity of bilayer graphene within linear response theory. We have found the chemical potential dependence of thermal conductivity for different values of magnetic field and bias voltage. Also a peak in the dependence of thermal conductivity on magnetic field has been observed. Moreover, in the absence of magnetic field, we find a monotonic decreasing behavior for chemical dependence of thermal conductivity. However, a peak appears in chemical potential dependence of thermal conductivity at nonzero magnetic field. Finally, the behavior of Seebeck coefficient in terms of magnetic field and chemical potential has been studied in details.

Bandgap engineering of SrZrS 3 chalcogenide perovskite via substitutional doping for photovoltaic applications: a first-principles DFT study

Strontium zirconium sulfide (SrZrS 3 ) has garnered significant attention for photovoltaic (PV) applications due to its excellent optoelectronic properties, high chemical and moisture stability, and non-toxicity. However, the bandgaps of both the α- and β-phases lie outside the optimum ranges for both single-junction solar cells (SJSCs) and tandem solar cells (TSCs), thereby limiting their applications in PV technologies. In this study, we employed hybrid density functional theory to engineer the band gaps of α- and β-SrZrS 3 through substitutional doping. We considered three dopants (Hf, Sn, and Ti) at the Zr site of SrZrS 3 with varying doping concentrations and investigated their effects on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the materials. We found that Sn and Ti doping effectively lowers the band gaps of both α- and β-SrZrS 3 , whereas Hf doping increases them. For x values up to 0.25, the band gaps of the α-SrZr 1−x Sn x S 3 and α-SrZr 1−x Ti x S 3 are within the optimum range for SJSCs, and those of β-SrZr 1−x Sn x S 3 and β-SrZr 1−x Ti x S 3 lie within the optimum range for Si/perovskite as well as perovskite/perovskite TSCs. The three dopants exhibited significant effects on the optical properties of both α- and β-SrZrS 3 , including the absorption coefficient, energy-loss functions, reflectivity, and refractivity spectra. Thermodynamic stability analysis revealed that for both phases, SrZr 1−x Hf x S 3 can be synthesized via exothermic processes, whereas the formation of SrZr 1−x Ti x S 3 and SrZr1−xSn x S 3 is endothermic and hence, not thermodynamically favorable. Further analysis showed that SrZr 1−x Ti x S 3 in both α- and β-phases are stable under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions, whereas SrZr 1−x Sn x S 3 is prone to dissociation into ternary phases (SrZrS 3 and SrSnS 3 ), especially at higher doping concentrations. These results show that Ti doping is effective in tuning the band gaps of α- and β-SrZrS 3 toward the optimal values for PV applications.

Spin-orbital coupling and slow phonon effects enabled persistent photoluminescence in organic crystal under isomer doping

When periodically packing the intramolecular donor-acceptor structures to form ferroelectric-like lattice identified by second harmonic generation, our CD49 molecular crystal shows long-wavelength persistent photoluminescence peaked at 542 nm with the lifetime of 0.43 s, in addition to the short-wavelength prompt photoluminescence peaked at 363 nm with the lifetime of 0.45 ns. Interestingly, the long-wavelength persistent photoluminescence demonstrates magnetic field effects, showing as crystalline intermolecular charge-transfer excitons with singlet spin characteristics formed within ferroelectric-like lattice based on internal minority/majority carrier-balancing mechanism activated by isomer doping effects towards increasing electron-hole pairing probability. Our photoinduced Raman spectroscopy reveals the unusual slow relaxation of photoexcited lattice vibrations, indicating slow phonon effects occurring in ferroelectric-like lattice. Here, we show that crystalline intermolecular charge-transfer excitons are interacted with ferroelectric-like lattice, leading to exciton-lattice coupling within periodically packed intramolecular donor-acceptor structures to evolve ultralong-lived crystalline light-emitting states through slow phonon effects in ferroelectric light-emitting organic crystal.

Toughening Sm–Co sintered magnets via microstructure modification with additives

We report the mechanical properties of the brittle Smsingle bondCo permanent magnets are of great practical significance. However, studies on the magnets have mostly focused on their magnetic properties. This paper reports the modified microstructure and refined unimodal grain size, enhanced flexural strength, and magnetic properties of Sm 2 (Co,Fe,Cu,Zr) 17 sintered magnets doped with La 2 O 3 , MgO, and CaF 2 fine particulates. The correlations between microstructure, phase composition, and mechanical and magnetic properties were studied. Doping of a small amount (e.g., 0.5–3 wt%) of La 2 O 3 , MgO, or CaF 2 fine particulates could significantly refine the unimodal grain sizes of the Smsingle bondCo magnets via the Zener pinning effect. Moreover, doping significantly improved the flexural strengths σ of the magnets. For example, the σ values of the magnets with 0.5 wt% MgO, 1 wt% La 2 O 3 , and 1 wt% CaF 2 were approximately 65%, 63%, and 42% higher than that of the reference magnet, respectively. Micromechanical simulations revealed that the fine particles of La 2 O 3 could deflect crack growth, while the CaF 2 particles could attract or arrest cracks during the fracture process. The mechanical strengthening effect was mainly due to grain size refinement. The Smsingle bondCo magnets with 0.5–1.5 wt% CaF2 and 0.5 wt% La 2 O 3 exhibited excellent magnetic properties while doping 1–3 wt% La2O3 and 0.5–3 wt% MgO deteriorated magnetic performance. The rational design of CaF 2 - or La 2 O 3 -doped microstructure can be an economical and effective method for producing toughened Sm–Co sintered magnets with high magnetic performance.
