An Approach for Utilizing Power Flow Modeling for Simulations of Hybrid Electric Propulsion Systems

This paper describes an approach to creating simulations of the electric components for a hybrid electric propulsionsystem. The proposed modeling technique is based on power/load flow modeling and is designed to provide a modularframework that includes buses, lines, and other electrical components that can be connected together to form the electrical distribution system. The purpose of this paper is to detail an electric distribution system modeling technique and to demonstrate how these models may be integrated with turbomachinery simulations. These general modeling techniques were created to be utilized for system and control design studies. Additionally, steady-state and dynamic performance for a proposed model example is compared with data from a hardware in the loop simulation.

Sensing The Position Of A Piston In A Cylinder

Position of piston in cylinder determined by series of ports and pressure-actuated electrical switches. Position-sensing scheme developed to help control movement of piston, which delivers fist-size objects to automatic mechanism at rate of less than 1 per second. Piston driven by either pressurized gas or hydraulic fluid. Position sensors have only fluid connections to cylinder. If cylinder or piston removed, not necessary to disturb electrical connections to switches. Scheme useful when electrical sensors create hazard or cause interference.

Series-Connected Vapor/Vapor AMTEC Cells

Size and weight reduced; operating lifetime increased. Developmental alkali-metal thermal-to-electric converter (AMTEC) in which cells fed from common supply of high-pressure sodium vapor and connected electrically in series. No liquid sodium makes contact with any part of AMTEC cells. Sodium vapor supplied to solid electrolyte of each cell through porous metal anode on upstream side. Proposed design reduces need for high-temperature feedthroughs in that cells internally connected. Power withdrawn through feedthrough at lower temperature without significant thermal loss.

The Spacelab Experiment Interface Device (SEID)

The Spacelab experiment interface device (SEID) is described which simulates the electrical, and logical connections of the Spacelab remote acquisition unit (RAU), the interface functions of the Spacelab experiment computer software, and the electrical aspects of the high rate multiplexer. Simulated RAU interfaces include PCM serial channels (up to four), user time clock (UTC), flexible inputs (up to 128) and discrete outputs (up to 64). Connectors are logically compatible with the rau. be instructed to execute sequences of input/output commands to the RAU, similar to those performed during flight. This approximation of the experiment computer software is adequate to detect interface problems and prevent these from occurring during Spacelab payload integration. The SEID hardware is a microprocessor based system, utilizing an 8085 microprocessor with 6K of PROM and 4K of static RAM. The basic unit is augmented with an LSI-11 microcomputer to provide disk storage and a more dynamic environment for generation of control data. A simulation of the general monitoring loop is provided to emulate Spacelab system timing.

High thermal power density heat transfer

Heat from a high temperature heat pipe is transferred through a vacuum or a gap filled with electrically nonconducting gas to a cooler heat pipe. The heat pipe is used to cool the nuclear reactor while the heat pipe is connected thermally and electrically to a thermionic converter. If the receiver requires greater thermal power density, geometries are used with larger heat pipe areas for transmitting and receiving energy than the area for conducting the heat to the thermionic converter. In this way the heat pipe capability for increasing thermal power densities compensates for the comparatively low thermal power densities through the electrically non-conducting gap between the two heat pipes.

Electrical double layers at the oil/water interface

This review presents the historical development and current status of the theory of the electrical double layer at a liquid/liquid interface. It gives rigorous thermodynamic definitions of all basic concepts related to liquid interfaces and to the electrical double layer. The difference between the surface of a solid electrode and the interface of two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES) is analyzed in connection to their electrical properties. The most important classical relationships for the electrical double layer are presented and critically discussed. The generalized adsorption isotherm is derived. After a short review of the classical Gouy-Chapman and Verwey-Niessen models, more recent developments of the double layer theory are presented. These include effects of variable dielectric permittivity, nonlocal electrostatics, hydration forces, the modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation and the ion-dipole plasma. The relative merits of different theories are estimated by comparing them with computer simulation of the ITIES and electrical double layer. Special attention is given to the structure of ITIES and its variation due to adsorption of ions and amphiphilic molecules.

STS-88 Day 05 Highlights

On this fifth day of the STS-88 mission, the flight crew, Commander Robert D. Cabana, Pilot Frederick W. Sturckow, and Mission Specialists Nancy J. Currie, James H. Newman, Jerry L. Ross, and Sergei Krikalev are awakened with the song "Jerry the Rigger," in honor of Mission Specialist Jerry Ross. Ross and Newman are then seen being readied for the first EVA. This space walk, which will last 6-1/2 hours, will focus on connecting computer and electrical cables between Unity, the two mating adapters attached to either end of Unity, and Zarya. In all, Ross and Newman will make about 40 connections during the spacewalk. This will enable power to flow to Unity for the first time in orbit and will permit Unity's avionics, computers and heaters to be activated.

Illumination control apparatus for compensating solar light

An illumination control apparatus is presented for supplementing light from solar radiation with light from an artificial light source to compensate for periods of insufficient levels of solar light. The apparatus maintains a desired illumination level within an interior space comprising an artificial light source connected to an electrical power source with a switch means for selectively energizing said light source. An actuator means for controlling the on-off operation of the switch means is connected to a light sensor which responses to the illumination level of the interior space. A limit switch carried adjacent to the actuator limits the movement of the actuator within a predetermined range so as to prevent further movement thereof during detection of erroneous illumination conditions.

Zee electrical interconnect

An interconnect, having some length, that reliably connects two conductors separated by the length of the interconnect when the connection is made but in which one length if unstressed would change relative to the other in operation. The interconnect comprises a base element an intermediate element and a top element. Each element is rectangular and formed of a conducting material and has opposed ends. The elements are arranged in a generally Z-shape with the base element having one end adapted to be connected to one conductor. The top element has one end adapted to be connected to another conductor and the intermediate element has its ends disposed against the other end of the base and the top element. Brazes mechanically and electrically interconnect the intermediate element to the base and the top elements proximate the corresponding ends of the elements. When the respective ends of the base and the top elements are connected to the conductors, an electrical connection is formed therebetween, and when the conductors are relatively moved or the interconnect elements change length the elements accommodate the changes and the associated compression and tension forces in such a way that the interconnect does not mechanically fatigue.

Cathode Modeling of Solid-State Batteries

The search for safe, reliable, and compact high-capacity energy storage devices has led to increased interest in all-solid-state battery research. The use of solid electrolytes provides enhanced safety and durability due to their reduced flammability and increased mechanical strength compared to organic liquid electrolytes. Still, the use of solid electrolytes remains challenging. Computational modeling plays a substantial role in addressing these challenges. A particle dynamics electromechanical model for simulating electrochemical processes in a solid-state battery cathode will be presented. The model presents cathode microstructure at the particle level as a mixture of ionically conductive solid electrolyte particles, electrically conductive carbon additives, and cathodic reactant particles. After densification, the particle connectivity is analyzed to reconstruct the complex electric network connecting reactant particles with an anodic and cathodic current collectors through the electrolyte and carbon particles. The Kirchhoff’s matrix equation describing this electric network, is solved to obtain values of various critical parameters, such as the overall conductivity of the cathode for lithium ions and electrons, cathodic reactant material utilization, and the distribution of the electric current and voltages within the cathode. In addition, by representing the reactant particles as electrolyte or galvanic microcells governed by the Butler-Volmer electrochemical equation, the overall performance of battery cells during charge or discharge processes, respectively, can be predicted for a given cathodic powder composition. The presented model, executed on a high-performance computing architecture, essentially provides a valuable guidance in designing and developing future solid-state batteries.

A tethering system for direct measurement of cardiovascular function in the caged baboon

A device suitable for the continuous measurement of physiological activity in large, conscious monkeys has permitted the direct recording of systemic arterial blood pressure and heart rate in caged baboons. The device comprises a lightweight fiberglass backpack, retained in place on the baboon by a thoracic elastic band and shoulder straps, and a flexible stainless steel tether connecting the pack to an electrocannular slip-ring in the top center of the baboon's cage. A chronically indwelling arterial catheter inserted retrograde into the abdominal aorta via the internal iliac artery and connected to a small pressure transducer on the pack provides direct measurement of blood pressure and heart rate. Body fluids can be sampled or drugs administered via an indwelling catheter in the inferior vena cava. Electrical and fluid connections between the fiberglass pack and recording and infusion equipment located outside the cage pass through the flexible tether and remain protected from the subject. The reliability of the tethering system has been demonstrated in physiological, pharmacological, and behavioral experiments with baboons.

Test apparatus for locating shorts during assembly of electrical buses

A test apparatus is described for locating electrical shorts that is especially suited for use while an electrical circuit is being fabricated or assembled. A ring counter derives input pulses from a square wave oscillator. The outputs of the counter are fed through transistors to an array of light emitting diodes. Each diode is connected to an electrical conductor, such as a bus bar, that is to be tested. In the absence of a short between the electrical conductors the diodes are sequentially illuminated. When a short occurs, a comparator/multivibrator circuit triggers an alarm and stops the oscillator and the sequential energization of the diodes. The two diodes that remain illuminated identify the electrical conductors that are shorted.
