Solar particle tracks in glass from Surveyor 3

Samples of glass from the Surveyor 3 TV camera filter were examined for particle tracks by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The corrected density value is 1.7 million + or - 0.1 million tracks/sq cm, and the track density vs depth curve is determined. Comparisons with other estimated and calculated data are discussed, and lack of agreement between data sets is considered. It is felt that considerable erosion occurs, and that erosion also occurs by a flaking of small thicknesses of material, possibly caused by solar wind irradiation.

Enhanced emission of iron nuclei in solar flares

A silica glass window from Apollo 12 CM and a piece of flint glass from the Surveyor 3 camera filter were examined for Fe nuclei tracks. A large difference between observed and predicted track densitites was found. At low rigidity (or energy), the solar particle Fe/He ratio is much higher than the photospheric abundance ratio, but decreases with increasing rigidity until it approaches the photospheric value at a rigidity of about 500 MV. It is felt that the low-energy Fe tracks are of solar origin. The implications that heavy nuclei can be preferentially emitted from a source of energetic particles are discussed. Other conclusions are the following: Rocks exposed on the lunar surface for 10 million yr would accumulate about 6 x 10 to the 12th power tracks/sq cm, and the rate of radiation-induced erosion is about 10 to the -9 cm/yr. The lunar soil should contain heavily irradiated small grains, some with track densities of about 10 to the 12th power/sq cm that have flaked from radiation-damaged rock surfaces and some that were irradiated while at the top of the soil layer.

Accretionary processes in the early solar system - An experimental approach.

Results are given of an experiment to determine the range of silicate particle velocities over which accretion occurs. It was shown that micrometer-size silicate flakes do not accrete during impacts in the velocity range of 1.5 to 9.5 km/sec. Silicate accretion took place only between particles whose orbits were similar. Over at least part of the velocity range in which silicate accretion was efficient, metal particles would have rebounded without accreting. This suggests that if both metal and silicate were present during accretion, fractionation of one with respect to the other would have occurred.

Application of diffusion barriers to the refractory fibers of tungsten, columbium, carbon and aluminum oxide

A radio frequency powered ion-plating system was used to plate protective layers of refractory oxides and carbide onto high strength fiber substrates. Subsequent overplating of these combinations with nickel and titanium was made to determine the effectiveness of such barrier layers in preventing diffusion of the overcoat metal into the fibers with consequent loss of fiber strength. Four substrates, five coatings, and two metal matrix materials were employed for a total of forty material combinations. The substrates were tungsten, niobium, NASA-Hough carbon, and Tyco sapphire. The diffusion-barrier coatings were aluminum oxide, yttrium oxide, titanium carbide, tungsten carbide with 14% cobalt addition, and zirconium carbide. The metal matrix materials were IN 600 nickel and Ti 6/4 titanium. Adhesion of the coatings to all substrates was good except for the NASA-Hough carbon, where flaking off of the oxide coatings in particular was observed.

An unusual meteor spectrum

An extraordinary spectrum of a meteor at a velocity of about 18.5 + or - 1.0 km/s was observed with an image orthicon camera. The radiant of the meteor was at an altitude of about 49 deg. It was first seen showing a yellow red continuous spectrum alone at a height of 137 + or - 8 km which is ascribed to the first positive group of nitrogen bands. After the meteor had descended to 116 + or - 6 km above sea level it brightened rapidly from its previous threshold brightness into a uniform continuum, the D-line of neutral sodium appeared, and at height 105 + or - 5 km all the other lines of the spectrum also appeared. The continuum remained dominant to the end. Water of hydration and entrained carbon flakes of characteristic dimension about 0.2 micron or less are proposed as constituents of the meteoroid to explain these phenomena.

Eight cm technology thruster development

A structural integrated ion thruster with 8-cm beam diameter (SIT-8) was developed for attitude control and stationkeeping of synchronous satellites. As optimized, the system demonstrates a thrust T=1.14 mlb (not corrected for beam V sub B = 1200 V (I sub sp = 2200 sec) total propellant utilization efficiency nu sub u = 59.8% (is approximately 72% without auxiliary pulse-igniter electrode), and electrical efficiency n sub E 61.9%. The thruster incorporates a wire-mesh anode and tantalum cover surfaces to control discharge chamber flake formation and employs an auxiliary pulse-igniter electrode for hollow-cathode ignition. When the SIT-8 is integrated with the compatible SIT-5 propellant tankage, the system envelope is 35 cm long by 13 cm flange bolt circle with a mass of 9.8 kg including 6.8 kg of mercury propellant. Two thrust vectoring systems which generate beam deflections in two orthogonal directions were also developed under the program and tested with the 8-cm thruster. One system vectors the beam over + or - 10 degrees by gimbaling of the entire thruster (not including tankage), while the other system vectors the beam over + or - 7 degrees by translating the accel electrode relative to the screen electrode.

Solutions for discharge chamber sputtering and anode deposit spalling in small mercury ion thrusters

Proposed solutions to the problems of sputter erosion and sputtered material spalling in the discharge chamber of small mercury ion thrusters are presented. The accelerated life test evaluated three such proposed solutions: (1) the use of tantalum as a single low sputter yield material for the exposed surfaces of the discharge chamber components subject to sputtering, (2) the use of a severely roughened anode surface to improve the adhesion of the sputter-deposited coating, and (3) the use of a wire cloth anode surface in order to limit the size of any coating flakes which might spall from it. Because of the promising results obtained in the accelerated life test with anode surfaces roughened by grit-blasting, experiments were carried out to optimize the grit-blasting procedure. The experimental results and an optimal grit-blasting procedure are presented.

Accelerated life test of sputtering and anode deposit spalling in a small mercury ion thruster

Tantalum and molybdenum sputtered from discharge chamber components during operation of a 5 centimeter diameter mercury ion thruster adhered much more strongly to coarsely grit blasted anode surfaces than to standard surfaces. Spalling of the sputtered coating did occur from a coarse screen anode surface but only in flakes less than a mesh unit long. The results were obtained in a 200 hour accelerated life test conducted at an elevated discharge potential of 64.6 volts. The test approximately reproduced the major sputter erosion and deposition effects that occur under normal operation but at approximately 75 times the normal rate. No discharge chamber component suffered sufficient erosion in the test to threaten its structural integrity or further serviceability. The test indicated that the use of tantalum-surfaced discharge chamber components in conjunction with a fine wire screen anode surface should cure the problems of sputter erosion and sputtered deposits spalling in long term operation of small mercury ion thrusters.

Performance of a mullite reusable surface insulation system in a hypersonic stream

The thermal and structural performance of a large panel of mullite reusable surface insulation (RSI) tiles was determined by a series of aerothermal tests in the Langley 8-foot high-temperature structures tunnel. The test panel was designed to represent a portion of the surface structure on a space shuttle orbiter fuselage along a 1,150 K isotherm with the mullite tile system bonded directly to the primary structure. Aerothermal tests were conducted at a free-stream Mach number of 6.7, a total temperature of 1,880 K, a unit Reynolds number of 4.6 million per meter, and dynamic pressure of 62 kPa. The thermal response of the mullite tile was as predicted, and the bond-line temperature did not exceed the design level of 570 K during a typical entry-heat cycle. Geometric irregularities of the tile gaps affected the tile edge temperatures when exposed to hypersonic flow. The tile coating demonstrated good toughness to particle impacts, but the coating cracked and flaked with thermal cycles. The gap filler of woven silica fibers appeared to hinder flow penetration into the gaps and withstood the flow shear of the present tests.

Near-opposition limb darkening of solids of planetary interest

Results are presented for a general laboratory study of the limb darkening at small phase angles of various materials of planetary interest, with particular attention given to the wavelength dependence of limb darkening. Only substances stable at room temperature were measured, including basalt, graphite, mixtures of MgO and charcoal powders, olivine, goethite, bronzite, CaCO3, MgSO4, BaSO4, limonite, and hematite. Previous studies aimed at determining the nature of limb darkening at opposition for different common materials are reviewed. It is found that the scattering properties of most particulate materials near phase zero can be described adequately by Minnaert's law, but that such a representation is totally inadequate for materials that tend to fracture into flakes with mirrorlike surfaces (e.g., bronzite and graphite). The results also indicate that materials such as olivine have scattering properties within deep absorption bands which exhibit definite departures from Minnaert's law at large angles of incidence or emission.

Wedge immersed thermistor bolometers

An immersed thermistor bolometer for the detection of ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation is described. Two types of immersed bolometers are discussed. The immersion of thermistor flakes in a lens, or half immersed by optical contact on a lens, is examined. Lens materials are evaluated for optimum immersion including fused aluminum oxide, beryllium oxide, and germanium. The application of the bolometer to instruments in which the entrance pupil of the immersion optics has a high aspect ratio is considered.

Aluminum-encased lead mallet

Soft hammer will not mar or distort work piece. Aluminum casing, made from aluminum tube, reduces flaring and flaking of lead. Lead can be melted out and recast to refurbish hammer when necessary. Hammer would replace plastic, lead, and aluminum soft hammers currently used widely in industry.

Ozonation of cooling tower waters

Continuous ozone injection into water circulating between a cooling tower and heat exchanger with heavy scale deposits inhibits formation of further deposits, promotes flaking of existing deposits, inhibits chemical corrosion and controls algae and bacteria.

Investigation of electrical noise in selenium-immersed thermistor bolometers

The selenium immersed, thermistor bolometer, IR detector failed due to spurious and escalating electrical noise outburst as a function of time at elevated temperatures during routine ground based testing in a space simulated environment. Spectrographic analysis of failed bolometers revealed selenium pure zones in the insulating selenium arsenic (Se-As) glass film which surrounds the active sintered Mn, Ni, Co oxide flake. The selenium pure film was identified as a potentially serious failure mechanism. Significant changes were instituted in the manufacturing techniques along with more stringent process controls which eliminated the selenium pure film and successfully produced 22study bolometers.

Pressure Assist Makes Coating More Reliable

Applying pressure improves bond between viscous coating and porous surface. Pressurization forces silicone resin into pores of anodized surface. Resin must completely fill pores of anodized surface, or resin flakes off after put in service.

Powder and particulate production of metallic alloys

Developments of particulate metallurgy of alloyed materials where the final products is a fully dense body are discussed. Particulates are defined as powders, flakes, foils, silvers, ribbons and strip. Because rapid solidification is an important factor in particulate metallurgy, all of the particulates must have at least one dimension which is very fine, sometimes as fine as 10 to 50 microns, but move typically up to several hundred microns, provided that the dimension permits a minimum solidification rate of at least 100 K/s.

Hybridized polymer matrix composites

Methods of improving the fire resistance of graphite epoxy composite laminates were investigated with the objective of reducing the volume of loose graphite fibers disseminated into the airstream as the result of a high intensity aircraft fuel fire. Improvements were sought by modifying the standard graphite epoxy systems without significantly negating their structural effectiveness. The modifications consisted primarily of an addition of a third constituent material such as glass fibers, glass flakes, carbon black in a glassy resin. These additions were designed to encourage coalescense of the graphite fibers and thereby reduce their aerodynamic float characteristics. A total of 38 fire tests were conducted on thin (1.0 mm) and thick (6.0 mm) hybrid panels.
