Electrical Resistivity Tomography based monitoring of stress perturbations to optimize placement of high-precision strain meters

The Center for Understanding Subsurface Signals and Permeability is a new U.S. Department of Energy Earthshot Center focused on understanding and predicting the long-term evolution of permeability in enhanced geothermal systems. The center will use a highly instrumented testbed within the Sanford Underground Research Facility to conduct field scale experiments that elucidate and test capabilities to simulate geochemical-geomechanical interactions and permeability evolution. Here we demonstrate initial developments using previously collected electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) monitoring data with high-performance multi-physics modelling advancements to inform the optimal location of two new monitoring boreholes. Specifically, ERT monitoring data collected during shear stimulation testing shows marked responses to changes in stress during borehole pressurization. We demonstrate how the same response is being simulated, ultimately to train a machine-learning algorithm to estimate rock properties and enable enhanced prediction of stress and strain responses anticipated during future testing campaigns.

High-Resolution Regional Atmosphere–Ocean–Wave Coupled Simulations of Hurricane Henri (2021)

To explore the integrated effects of ocean and ocean surface wave related physical processes on TC simulations, a set of three model simulations is performed. * In experiment 'A', the event is modeled using the Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model alone with prescribed Sea Surface Temperature (SST) at 6-hour intervals. * In experiment ‘AO,’ WRF is coupled with the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM), enabling variable exchange between atmosphere and ocean, but without considering ocean surface wave-related physical processes. * In experiment ‘AOW’, WRF, FVCOM, and Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) exchange variables with each other every hour through the OASIS3-MCT Coupler to allow direct and indirect atmosphere-ocean-wave interactions. * Observational data are also included in this dataset (Dropsonde, HRD-Radar, NDBC_wave). All simulations are initialized at 18:00 UTC on August 19, 2021, within a domain encompassing the western North Atlantic Ocean. The atmospheric domain features a horizontal resolution of 3 km. The ocean domain, which covers a substantial portion of the WRF ocean domain, employs an unstructured triangular grid with resolutions ranging from 3 km near the coast to 9 km in the open ocean, effectively resolving the complex coastline of the U.S. Northeast Coast. Initial and boundary conditions for the atmosphere model are obtained from the 6-hourly 0.25° NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) Global Forecast System (GFS; NCEP, 2015) data.

Analysis of runaway electron driven whistler wave instability experiments

Data acquired on the DIII-D tokamak were analyzed. The data are from experiments that were conducted to study an instability that is driven unstable by intense populations of electrons with MeV energies that are known as runaway electrons. The instability is a type of plasma wave called a whistler wave that occurs at frequencies above the ion cyclotron frequency but well below the electron cyclotron frequency. The waves were measured by magnetic fluctuation coils that are embedded in the DIII-D vacuum vessel wall. After upgrades to this diagnostic were completed, new experiments were conducted on July 13, 2020 in order to measure the toroidal mode number of the whistler waves and to extend the frequency of the detected waves. Through the use of mixers, instability between 600-700 MHz was detected. (The initial experiments only measured up to 200 MHz.) Analysis of the data was led by Hari Choudhury, a PhD student at Columbia University. Mr. Choudhury has submitted two papers for publication that include contributions by UC Irvine (UCI) Professor Heidbrink and his graduated PhD student Genevieve DeGrandchamp: “Detailed Characterization of Runaway Electron Driven Whistler Waves in Low-Density DIII-D Discharges” and “First Demonstration of Resonant Pitch-Angle Scattering of Relativistic Electrons by Externally-Launched Helicon Waves.” The first paper, which has been submitted to Physics of Plasmas, has significant contributions to both the data and the interpretation by UCI scientists. In contrast, UCI contributions to the second paper, which has been submitted to Physical Review Letters, are relatively minor.

PV Operations Software Transparency: A PVMAC Industry Snapshot

The rapid growth of photovoltaic (PV) deployment has increased reliance on software platforms for monitoring, workflow automation, diagnostics, and performance analytics. As these tools play a central role in asset management and operations and maintenance (O&M), greater transparency in methodologies, data handling, and validation practices benefits the broader PV ecosystem. To better understand current practices and identify opportunities for improved clarity and interoperability, 24 software providers contributed detailed responses through the PV O&M Analytics Collaborative (PVMAC) initiative, the first structured questionnaire of its kind in the industry, covering onboarding, interoperability, data quality, diagnostics, AI/ML, and other operational categories. These providers represent over 1.1 TW of solar assets under management. The analysis shows broad adoption of digital twins, AI/ML, and API integrations, but also highlights challenges in onboarding processes, inconsistent definitions and methodologies, variability in key performance indicator (KPI) calculations, and limited independent validation. Greater standardization, clearer documentation, and stronger validation frameworks could improve transparency, comparability, and trust across PV operations software platforms.

A Comment on “Deep Proteogenomics of a Photosynthetic Cyanobacterium”

Proteomic researchers strive to achieve complete annotation of protein-coding DNA sequences to provide a foundational context for their relevant biological data. A recent deep proteogenomic study using a photosynthetic cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 by Spät et al. proposed 64 refined open reading frames (ORFs). By searching LC-MS/MS data from affinity chromatography-isolated protein complexes, our laboratory identified that six of these high-abundance ORFs possess Nterminal initiation start sites that differ than those proposed in the alternative models. Our findings are supported by highly confident MS2 data, phylogenetic analysis, chemical labeling, and established data from two independent research groups. Based on these highquality experimental identifications, we subsequently propose a standardized strategy and set of criteria for future deep proteogenomic efforts to ensure accurate and stringent proteogenomic annotation.
