Improved upper limit on the photon rest mass

It is shown that application of standard MHD arguments to hydromagnetic waves observed in the Crab Nebula dramatically improves the upper bound on photon rest mass. The standard argument that massive photons are governed by the Phoca field equations is outlined and applied to wisp features (identified as hydromagnetic waves) observed in the Crab. The results imply an upper limit for the photon rest mass of between 3 by 10 to the -54th power and 3 by 10 to the -53rd power gram, which is smaller than the best previous limits by a factor of 10,000 to 100,000. It is noted that although the present limit is probably valid in order of magnitude, some doubt remains since there are inconsistencies in the standard arguments.

An upper limit on interstellar C IV in the spectrum of gamma-2 Velorum

An upper limit on the column density of C IV along the line of sight to gamma-2 Vel is derived from upper limits placed on the equivalent widths of the interstellar C IV doublet with rest wavelengths at 1548.20 A and 1550.77 A. A lower limit of 250,000 K is calculated for the electron temperature of O VI emitting regions by combining the C IV results with a measurement of the column density of interstellar O VI for the same star and using calculations for the relative ionization of some abundant elements as a function of electron temperature in a low-density plasma. Since gamma-2 Vel is in the central part of the Gum Nebula, the high temperature suggested by these results is shown to support the idea that a high-temperature phase of the interstellar medium, possibly maintained by supernova explosions, may exist.-

The solar-flare infrared continuum - Observational techniques and upper limits

Exploratory observations at 20 microns and 350 microns have determined detection thresholds for solar flares in these wavelengths. In the 20-micron range, solar atmospheric fluctuations (the 'temperature field') set the basic limits on flare detectability at about 5 K; at 350 microns, extinction in the earth's atmosphere provides the basic limitation of about 30 K. These thresholds are low enough for the successful detection of several infrared-emitting components of large flares. The upper limits obtained for subflares indicate that the thickness of the H-alpha flare region does not exceed approximately 10 km. This result confirms the conclusion of Suemoto and Hiei (1959) regarding the small effective thickness of the H-alpha-emitting regions in solar flares.

Solar-wind tritium limit and the mixing rate of the solar atmosphere

Tritium has been measured, in Surveyor 3 samples, some of which were adjacent to those in which solar-wind-implanted He-4 had previously been measured. Little of the H-3 can be attributed to solar-wind implantation. The upper limit for the H-3/He-4 ratio in the solar wind is four times ten to the minus tenth power and corresponds to a H-3/H-1 limit of two times ten to the minus eleventh power. This limit imposes a requirement on the mixing rate in the solar atmosphere if the H-3 production rate in solar-surface nuclear reactions is greater than 160 sq cm/sec.

Investigation of performance limits in axial groove heat pipes

The entrainment-shear performance limit which occurs in axial groove heat pipes was investigated and explained. In the existing heat pipe literature the entrainment heat flux limit is defined as the condition where the Weber number is greater than or equal to one. In this analysis, the critical value for the entrainment Weber number is found to be 2 pi less than or equal to 3 pi. Perhaps more important to the heat pipe designer than the entrainment performance limit is the prediction of the performance degradation due to vapor-liquid shearing stress which is also described. Preliminary qualitative experiments were conducted to observe the shear. stress wave formation phenomena. The equations presented may be used to predict and minimize the vapor-liquid shear stress performance effects that occur in axial groove and puddle flow artery heat pipes.

Fourier and Hadamard transform spectrometers - A limited comparison

An encoding figure of merit is established for a detector-noise limited Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) and compared to the comparable figure for a Hadamard transform spectrometer (HTS). The limitation of the Fourier system is partly that it does not truly Fourier analyze the radiation. Instead a cosine squared modulation is imposed on the different spectral frequencies. An additional difficulty is that neither the cosine nor the cosine squared functions form an orthonormal set. This makes the Fellgett's advantage (root-mean-squared figure of merit) for a single detector Michelson interferometer a factor of the square root of (N/8) greater than for a conventional grating instrument - rather than the square root of (N/2). The theoretical limit would be the square root of N.

Measurement of material parameters that limit the open-circuit voltage in P-N-junction silicon solar cells

The greatest gains in solar energy conversion efficiency of p-n-junction silicon solar cells come from increasing the open-circuit voltage V sub OC; it is important to understand and characterize the material parameters that limit the V sub OC. Strong experimental evidence exists to support the assertion that either an anomalously large minority carrier charge storage or an anomalously small minority carrier lifetime in the quasi-neutral emitter region limits the open circuit voltage. A method is presented for measuring charge storage and effective lifetime. Static and transient measurements are analyzed using physical models of the solar cell characteristics. This analysis yields the emitter charge storage and life-time, which then can be related to the various physical mechanisms, such as energy band gap shrinkage, that have been proposed earlier as responsible for limiting V sub OC.

Low-speed test limit of V/STOL model located vertically off-center

A vertically off-centered V/STOL model - a 2-ft-diam three-bladed aluminum propeller operating in a rotor mode - is tested in an 8 by 12 ft wind tunnel with and without ground plane along with an associated 3 by 4.5 ft test section insert. The objective was to assess the effect of the vertically off-centered model on the low-speed test limit. The aerodynamic data of the model at a constant negative angle of attack (-3 deg) are recorded at selected tunnel dynamic pressures to provide adequate data points to define the model lift variation with respect to the tip speed ratio. The adverse effect of the rotor low-speed test limit is observed in the form of lift change with respect to the tip speed ratio. A major conclusion is that for rotors tested with a ground plane or in the vicinity of the floor, the ratio of distance between floor and model to rotor radius defines the low-speed test limits.

Detectability limit and uncertainty considerations for laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy in flames

Laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy of flames is discussed, and derived uncertainty relations are used to calculate detectability limits due to statistical errors. Interferences due to Rayleigh scattering from molecules as well as Mie scattering and incandescence from particles have been examined for their effect on detectability limits. Fluorescence trapping is studied, and some methods for reducing the effect are considered. Fluorescence trapping places an upper limit on the number density of the fluorescing species that can be measured without signal loss.

Solar-wind tritium limit and nuclear processes in the solar atmosphere

Tritium in Surveyor 3 material is measured, and the resulting H-3/H-1 ratio for the solar wind is applied in a solar flare-solar wind relation to investigate the mixing requirements for the solar atmosphere. The flare-wind relation is derived. None of the tritium can be attributed to solar-wind implantation. The upper limit for the H-3/He ratio in the solar wind is 4 times 10 to the minus tenth power and corresponds to a H-3/H-1 limit of 2 times 10 to the minus eleventh power. This limit imposes a requirement on the mixing rate in the solar atmosphere if the H-3 production rate in solar-surface nuclear reactions is greater than 160/sq cm per sec.

Techniques used for limiting degradation products of polymeric materials for use in the space environment

Techniques are discussed for limiting or controlling the degradation products (outgassing) of polymeric materials in the space environment. One technique, now ASTM E-595-77, is used to screen out those materials which lose greater than 1% Total Mass Loss when in vacuum for 24 hours at 125 C and which have more than 0.10% Collected Volatile Condensable Materials condensing on a collector surface at 25 C. Examples of silicone materials which are high and low in outgassing are given. The numerous mechanical motions in spacecraft experiments require liquid lubricants which also might degrade in space. Labyrinth seals and barrier films are utilized to limit the degradation of or from these lubricants. A recoverable in-flight experiment has been proposed for making definitive measurements of how effective these techniques are in limiting the amounts and escape paths of outgassed molecules.

Predicting dynamic performance limits for servosystems with saturating nonlinearities

A generalized treatment for a system with a single saturating nonlinearity is presented and compared with frequency response plots obtained from an analog model of the system. Once the amplitude dynamics are predicted with the limit lines, an iterative technique is employed to determine the system phase response. The saturation limit line technique is used in conjunction with velocity and acceleration limits to predict the performance of an electro-hydraulic servosystem containing a single-stage servovalve. Good agreement was obtained between predicted performance and experimental data.

Limiting process in shallow junction solar cells

In extending the violet and nonreflective cell technology to lower resistivities, several processes limiting output power were encountered. The most important was the dark diffusion current due to recombination at the front grid contacts. After removal of this problem by reduction of the silicon metal contact area (to 0.14 percent of the total area), the electric field enhanced junction recombination current J sub r was the main limitation. Alteration of the diffusion profile to reduce the junction field is shown to be an effective means of influencing J sub r. The remaining problems are the bulk recombination in the n+ layer and the surface recombination at the oxide-silicon interface; both of these problems are aggravated by band-narrowing resulting from heavy doping in the diffused layer. Experimental evidence for the main limitations is shown, where increased diffusion temperature is seen to reduce both the influence of the front grid contacts and the junction electric field by increasing the junction depth. The potential for further significant improvement in efficiency appears to be high.

Experimental and theoretical examples of the value and limitations of transition state theory

Value and limitations of transition-state theory (TST) are reviewed. TST analyses of the temperature dependence of the 'direct' reactions CH3 + CH3CHO yields CH4 + CH3CO(1) and O + CH4 yields OH + CH3(2) are presented in detail, and other examples of TST usefulness are recalled. Limitations are discussed for bimolecular processes in terms of 'complex' vs. 'direct' mechanisms. The reaction OH + CO yields CO2 + H is discussed in this context. Limitations for unimolecular processes seem to arise only for simple bond fission processes, and recent advances are noted.

A limit to the X-ray luminosity of nearby normal galaxies

The hypothesis that normal galaxies are on the average more luminous in the X-ray region than the Milky Way galaxy or M31 and therefore are possible candidates for the low-luminosity sources of the 2 to 60 keV extragalactic diffuse background is tested. Data from the A-2 detectors on the HEAO-1 spacecraft were examined for emission from positions coincident with 76 selected normal galaxies, and upper limits to the average galactic luminosity for various luminosity distributions resulting in the observed count rate distribution were determined. For uniform and exponential galactic luminosity distributions, limits of 2.7 x 10 to the 38th erg/sec and 3.4 x 10 to the 38th erg/sec, respectively, at the 90% confidence level were obtained. It is shown that the Hubble-constant-independent upper limit to galactic emissivity is less than 1% of the diffuse background emissivity, indicating that normal galaxies are not responsible for the diffuse X-ray background and have luminosities comparable to that of the Galaxy.

Analysis and correlation with theory of rotor lift-limit test data

A wind tunnel test program to define the cruise performance and determine any limitations to lift and propulsive force of a conventional helicopter rotor is described. A 2.96 foot radius model rotor was used. The maximum lift and propulsive force obtainable from an articulated rotor for advance ratios of 0.4 to 0.67, and the blade load growth as the lift approaches the limit are determined. Cruise rotor performance for advance ratios of 0.4 to 0.67 and the sensitivity of the rotor forces and moments to rotor control inputs as the lift limit is approached are established.

Pressure limiting propellant actuating system

A pressure limiting propellant activating system for simultaneously limiting the output force while maintaining a constant output pressure from the combustion chamber is described. The propellant actuated system includes an outer barrel, outer housing and a combustion chamber. A main piston is movable in the barrel housing when gas pressure is developed in the combustion chamber. A relief piston is concentrically mounted and fixedly movable with the main piston when gas pressure is exerted from the combustion. A relief piston has a force-activated separation mechanism for limiting the output force while simultaneously maintaining constant output pressure on the main piston from the combustion chamber.

The quantum limit for gravitational-wave detectors and methods of circumventing it

The Heisenberg uncertainty principle prevents the monitoring of the complex amplitude of a mechanical oscillator more accurately than a certain limit value. This 'quantum limit' is a serious obstacle to the achievement of a 10 to the -21st gravitational-wave detection sensitivity. This paper examines the principles of the back-action evasion technique and finds that this technique may be able to overcome the problem of the quantum limit. Back-action evasion does not solve, however, other problems of detection, such as weak coupling, large amplifier noise, and large Nyquist noise.
