Contract engineering item specifications for the modular space station are presented. These specifications resulted from the development and allocations of requirements which are concise statements of performance or constraints on performance. Specifications contain requirements for functional performance and for the verification of design solutions.
The orbiting laboratory which can take many forms and can be configured to house a crew of up to 12 men is discussed. The initial study of the 33-foot-diameter Space Station, launched by the Saturn INT-21 and supporting a complement of 12 crewmen, has been completed and documented. A Modular Space Station comprised of smaller, shuttle-launched modules is described. These modules could ultimately be configured to provide for a crew of the same size as envisioned for the 33-foot-diameter Space Station-but buildup would be gradual, beginning with a small initial crew and progressing toward greater capability by adding modules and crewmen on a flexible schedule.
The mission analysis on the modular space station considers experimental requirements and options characterized by low initial cost and incremental manning. Features that affect initial development and early operating costs are identified and their impacts on the program are assessed. Considered are the areas of experiment, mission, operations, information management, and long life and safety analyses.
A modular approach for assessing the affects of radiation environments on man in operational systems has been developed. The feasibility of the model has been proved and the practicality has been assessed. It has been applied to one operational system to date and information obtained has been submitted to systems analysts and mission planners for the assessment of man's vulnerability and impact on systems survivability. In addition, the model has been developed so that the radiobiological data can be input to a sophisticated man-machine interface model to properly relate the radiobiological stress with other mission stresses including the effects of a degraded system.
An organized approach is defined for establishing the most significant requirements pertaining to mission operations, information management, and computer program design and development for the modular space station program. The operations plan pertains to the space station and experiment module program elements and to the ground elements required for mission management and mission support operations.
The interface requirements cover both the ground and orbital phases of operation from the launch of the first MSS module until the initial modular station has been manned and in routine operation. As a point of reference, the two-stage, fully reusable space shuttle was selected. The space shuttle is briefly described from the standpoint of its features most important to the interface requirements with the MSS. The environment induced upon the MSS elements when transported to and from orbit by the shuttle orbiter also is included. The mission operation includes the space shuttle launch facilities, the ground flow of the MSS modules, and the orbital operations of rendezvous, MSS buildup, resupply of the manned station, and orbiter descent and landing. The shuttle's once-around abort case is described as it affects the MSS interface requirements. The interfaces between the orbiter and the MSS resulting from the ground and orbital operations, are also described.
The design and operation of the initial modular space station are summarized. The design for a crew of six is presented and concepts for growth to twelve are discussed, including the configuration, subsystems, experiment laboratories, and flight operations. Station module designs are described and design features of the arrangements, configuration, and subsystems are discussed. A reference experiment program is presented which includes a representative phasing of experiment activity for both initial and growth stations. The flight operations required for station assembly and for carrying out the reference experiment program are also covered.
This document contains trades and analyses conducted during the Modular Space Station Phase B System Definition. Requirements and concepts considered and the tradeoff analysis leading to the preferred concept are presented. Integrated analyses are presented for subsystems and thermal control. Specific trades and analyses are presented for water management, atmosphere control, energy storage, radiators, navigation, control moment gyros, and system maintenance. The analyses of manipulator concepts and requirements, and supplemental analyses of information management issues are summarized. Subsystem reliability analyses include a detailed discussion of the critical failure analysis.
A narrative summary is presented of technical, programmatic, and planning information developed during the space station definition study extension period. The modular space station is emphasized, but tasks pertaining to shuttle sorties missions and information management advanced development are included. A series of program options considering technical, schedule, and programmatic alternatives to the baseline program are defined and evaluated.
The modular space station mockup is described in detail with emphasis on the interior arrangements of the crew living spaces, control center, and general purpose laboratory facilities. The results of three mockup reviews are also presented.
The project is defined for design, development, fabrication, test, and pre-mission and mission operations of a shuttle-launched modular space station. The project management approach is described in terms of organization, management requirements, work breakdown structure, schedule, time-phased logic, implementation plans, manpower, and funding. As part of a modular inverter-converter development program, control techniques were developed to provide load sharing among paralleled inverters or converters. An analysis of the requirements of paralleling circuits and a discussion of the circuits developed and their performance are included in this report. The current sharing was within 5.6 percent of rated-load current for the ac modules and 7.4 percent for the dc modules for an initial output voltage unbalance of 5 volts.
The system safety analyses and requirements developed for the modular space station during the phase B extension are reviewed. Residual hazards and unresolved safety issues are summarized. Hazards resulting from equipment failures or malfunctions, operations, or credible accidents are identified and evaluated. Special safety trade studies are presented.
The functional requirements for the design of an interpretive simulator for the space ultrareliable modular computer (SUMC) are presented. A review of applicable existing computer simulations is included along with constraints on the SUMC simulator functional design. Input requirements, output requirements, and language requirements for the simulator are discussed in terms of a SUMC configuration which may vary according to the application.
Detailed configuration and subsystems preliminary design data are presented for the modular space station concept. Each module comprising the initial space station is described in terms of its external and internal configuration, its functional responsibilities to the initial cluster, and its orbital build up sequence. Descriptions of the subsequent build up to the growth space station are also presented. Analytical and design techniques, tradeoff considerations, and depth of design detail are discussed for each subsystem. The subsystems include the following: structural/mechanical; crew habitability and protection; experiment support; electrical power; environmental control/life support; guidance, navigation, and control; propulsion; communications; data management; and onboard checkout subsystems. The interfaces between the station and other major elements of the program are summarized. The rational for a zero-gravity station, in lieu of one with artificial-gravity capability, is also summarized.
For several proposed configurations of the modular space station, the gravity gradient torque distribution is examined for both Y-POP and inertial hold orbits. The necessary equations are derived to allow for solar panel gimbaling, and a procedure is established which will allow any desired space station configuration to be built up. Results indicated that solar panel gimbaling can be a significant factor in the torque distribution in Y-POP orbits. In addition, for the two configurations that were plotted, bias torque magnitudes varied widely in inertial hold modes.
