Ku-Band rendezvous radar performance computer simulation model

All work performed on the Ku-band rendezvous radar performance computer simulation model program since the release of the preliminary final report is summarized. Developments on the program fall into three distinct categories: (1) modifications to the existing Ku-band radar tracking performance computer model; (2) the addition of a highly accurate, nonrealtime search and acquisition performance computer model to the total software package developed on this program; and (3) development of radar cross section (RCS) computation models for three additional satellites. All changes in the tracking model involved improvements in the automatic gain control (AGC) and the radar signal strength (RSS) computer models. Although the search and acquisition computer models were developed under the auspices of the Hughes Aircraft Company Ku-Band Integrated Radar and Communications Subsystem program office, they have been supplied to NASA as part of the Ku-band radar performance comuter model package. Their purpose is to predict Ku-band acquisition performance for specific satellite targets on specific missions. The RCS models were developed for three satellites: the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) spacecraft, the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) spacecraft, and the Space Telescopes.

NASNF Processing and Packaging Technical Study

The ABD program will require development of a strategy for the dispositioning the Non-Aluminum Spent Nuclear Fuel (NASNF), some of which will be very challenging to handle and dissolve as described in this report. Not all the NASNF is suitable for processing through the electrolytic dissolver. The strategy may involve dissolution of the majority of the NASNF inventory in the electrolytic dissolver combined with some other disposition alternative(s) for the fraction that is not suitable for electrolytic dissolution. This report highlights the risks and challenges associated with the baseline approach of using the electrolytic dissolver to process all of the NASNF. In addition, the characteristics of the NASNF and how those characteristics relate to the risks associated with electrolytically dissolving the specific fuel types.

Secure Display of Space-Exploration Images

Java EDR Display Interface (JEDI) is software for either local display or secure Internet distribution, to authorized clients, of image data acquired from cameras aboard spacecraft engaged in exploration of remote planets. ( EDR signifies experimental data record, which, in effect, signifies image data.) Processed at NASA s Multimission Image Processing Laboratory (MIPL), the data can be from either near-realtime processing streams or stored files. JEDI uses the Java Advanced Imaging application program interface, plus input/output packages that are parts of the Video Image Communication and Retrieval software of the MIPL, to display images. JEDI can be run as either a standalone application program or within a Web browser as a servlet with an applet front end. In either operating mode, JEDI communicates using the HTTP(s) protocol(s). In the Web-browser case, the user must provide a password to gain access. For each user and/or image data type, there is a configuration file, called a "personality file," containing parameters that control the layout of the displays and the information to be included in them. Once JEDI has accepted the user s password, it processes the requested EDR (provided that user is authorized to receive the specific EDR) to create a display according to the user s personality file.

Dose and linear energy transfer spectral measurements for the supersonic transport program

The purpose of the package, called the high altitude radiation instrumentation system (HARIS), is to measure the radiation hazard to supersonic transport passengers from solar and galactic cosmic rays. The HARIS includes gaseous linear energy transfer spectrometer, a tissue equivalent ionization chamber, and a geiger meuller tube. The HARIS is flown on RB-57F aircraft at 60,000 feet. Data from the HARIS are reduced to give rad and rem dose rates measured by the package during the flights. Results presented include ambient data obtained on background flights, altitude comparison data, and solar flare data.
