Study of Epoxy Sealant Layer for Use in Tank Bottom Refurbishment for the DOE EM Tank Waste R&D Program

This study addresses the DOE National Laboratory Program on Hanford Tank Waste Cleanup Research and Development, focusing on tank waste retrieval, transport, and closure. Millions of gallons of high-level waste are stored in the double shell tanks (DSTs) at Hanford site. The waste is stored in the primary tank, while the secondary shell acts as a buffer between the primary tank and environment. The DSTs’ bottoms could be corroded due to the corrosive waste properties and contents. Therefore, they are being emptied, and refurbishment is needed before waste storage continues. SRNL addresses the refurbishment of still operational DSTs bottoms with a two-layer refurbishment approach. We propose that the bottom layer consists of a high-density cementitious material to shield the epoxy top layer from radioactive residuals, while the top layer serves as an epoxy sealant. This work focuses on the experimental evaluation on the formulation and testing of the epoxy layer.

Power and Limitations of Linear Programming Decoder for Quantum LDPC Codes

Decoding quantum error-correcting codes is a key challenge in enabling fault-tolerant quantum computation. In the classical setting, linear programming (LP) decoders offer provable performance guarantees and can leverage fast practical optimization algorithms. Although LP decoders have been proposed for quantum codes, their performance and limitations remain relatively underexplored. In this work, we uncover a key limitation of LP decoding for quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes: certain constant-weight error patterns lead to ambiguous fractional solutions that cannot be resolved through independent rounding. To address this issue, we incorporate a post-processing technique known as ordered statistics decoding (OSD), which significantly enhances LP decoding performance in practice. Our results show that LP decoding, when augmented with OSD, can outperform belief propagation with the same post-processing for intermediate code sizes of up to hundreds of qubits. These findings suggest that LP-based decoders, equipped with effective post-processing, offer a promising approach for decoding near-term quantum LDPC codes.

Evaluations for Nuclear Criticality Safety Program 12 C, 139 La, minor actinides, 235 U [Slides]

For light nuclei, preliminary work extends the evaluation from 6.5 MeV to ~ 10 MeV. For 139 La, the team delivered full evaluation in fast region to ORNL, including covariances. For sup>235 U, RPI data simulations, the team performed simulations and showed some improvement for neutrons below 5 MeV. Some of the changes needed for more improvement might not be supported by the current format. Some of the changes above 12 MeV to account for the angular distribution of preequilibrium neutrons require a change in the PFNS evaluation procedure.

A New NCSP Nuclear Criticality Safety Training and Pipeline Program

Nuclear criticality safety (NCS) training is vital and mandatory for NCS professionals to ensure the safe processing, handling, storage, and transportation of fissionable materials outside nuclear reactors. The requirement for this training is prescribed in several international and domestic guidance documents.
