Development of a width-modulated pulse rebalance electronics loop for strapdown gyroscopes

A new width modulated pulse rebalance electronics loop was developed for use with strapdown gyroscopes. Advantages of the width modulated binary over the ternary loop are the following: (1) The H-switch is easier to implement; (2) torque is applied in finely quantized increments; (3) the analog-to-digital conversion for data generation is inside the loop and is directly determined by the torque pulse; (4) on part of the loop compensation network bypasses the gyroscope; and (5) the torquer is fed constant power.

A class of all digital phase locked loops - Modelling and analysis.

An all digital phase locked loop which tracks the phase of the incoming signal once per carrier cycle is proposed. The different elements and their functions, and the phase lock operation are explained in detail. The general digital loop operation is governed by a non-linear difference equation from which a suitable model is developed. The lock range for the general model is derived. The performance of the digital loop for phase step, and frequency step inputs for different levels of quantization without loop filter, are studied. The analytical results are checked by simulating the actual system on the digital computer.

Hamiltonian cosmology.

The study of cosmological models by means of equations of motion in Hamiltonian form is considered. Hamiltonian methods applied to gravity seem to go back to Rosenfeld (1930), who constructed a quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian for linearized general relativity theory. The first to notice that cosmologies provided a simple model in which to demonstrate features of Hamiltonian formulation was DeWitt (1967). Applications of the ADM formalism to homogeneous cosmologies are discussed together with applications of the Hamiltonian formulation, giving attention also to Bianchi-type universes. Problems involving the concept of superspace and techniques of quantization are investigated.

A new cosmological model - Formation of organic molecules, planets, and comets.

A new model is proposed based on studies of plasma instabilities in a magnetic field, which suggests that the inside region of a star is quantized into smaller regions, each of which is rotating in the magnetic field of a central rotating stellar core. Numerous applications of such a model are explored and some, such as the earth, evaluated in detail.

Minisuperspace.

The model universe in which a Klein-Gordon type equation was first studied is reviewed, as well as a Hamiltonian statement of the corresponding classical problem of solving Einstein's equation. Developments are generalized to a minisuperspace with a nondiagonal metric in place of an appropriate wave equation, in which case minisuperspace is no longer flat. The basic commutation relations for quantization in this curved space are then related to its Killing vectors.

The effects of channel errors in DPCM systems and comparison with PCM systems.

Sampling, quantization, and channel errors in differential pulse-code modulation (DPCM) systems are considered and compared to results obtained with standard pulse-code modulation (PCM) systems. DPCM and PCM are compared for three different reconstruction filters. The optimum prediction coefficient is shown to depend on the channel noise.-

White dwarfs as infrared sources in the galactic centre.

It is shown that quantized magnetic bremsstrahlung radiation in intense magnetic fields from the surface layers of white dwarfs could serve as one of the possible explanations for the infrared emission from the center of the galaxy that has been detected by Hoffmann et al. (1971). It is assumed, in particular, that the infrared radiation is from clusters of white dwarfs.

Strapdown system Performance Optimization Test evaluations (SPOT), volume 2

A three axis inertial system is packaged in an Apollo gimbal fixture for fine grain evaluation of strapdown system performance in dynamic environments. These evaluations have provided information to assess the effectiveness of real-time compensation techniques and to study system performance tradeoffs to factors such as quantization iteration rate. The strapdown performance and tradeoff studies conducted in this program are discussed.

Simulation study of communication link for Pioneer Saturn/Uranus atmospheric entry probe

A digital simulation is presented for a candidate modem in a modeled atmospheric scintillation environment with Doppler, Doppler rate, and signal attenuation typical of the radio link conditions for an outer planets atmospheric entry probe. The results indicate that the signal acquisition characteristics and the channel error rate are acceptable for the system requirements of the radio link. The simulation also outputs data for calculating other error statistics and a quantized symbol stream from which error correction decoding can be analyzed.

Optimal space communications techniques

Digital multiplication of two waveforms using delta modulation (DM) is discussed. It is shown that while conventional multiplication of two N bit words requires N2 complexity, multiplication using DM requires complexity which increases linearly with N. Bounds on the signal-to-quantization noise ratio (SNR) resulting from this multiplication are determined and compared with the SNR obtained using standard multiplication techniques. The phase locked loop (PLL) system, consisting of a phase detector, voltage controlled oscillator, and a linear loop filter, is discussed in terms of its design and system advantages. Areas requiring further research are identified.

Structural analysis of vibroacoustical processes

The method of automatic identification of acoustical signals, by means of the segmentation was used to investigate noises and vibrations in machines and mechanisms, for cybernetic diagnostics. The structural analysis consists of presentation of a noise or vibroacoustical signal as a sequence of segments, determined by the time quantization, in which each segment is characterized by specific spectral characteristics. The structural spectrum is plotted as a histogram of the segments, also as a relation of the probability density of appearance of a segment to the segment type. It is assumed that the conditions of ergodic processes are maintained.

Bounds on the performance of a class of digital communication systems

Bounds on the capacity of a class of digital communication channels are derived. Equating the bounds on capacity to rate-distortion functions of (typical) sources in turn produces bounds on the performance of a class of digital communication systems. For ratios of squared quantization level to noise variance much less than one, the power requirements for this class of digital communication systems are shown to be within approximately 3 dB of the theoretical optimum.

An all digital phase locked loop for synchronization of a sinusoidal signal embedded in white Gaussian noise

An all digital phase locked loop which tracks the phase of the incoming sinusoidal signal once per carrier cycle is proposed. The different elements and their functions and the phase lock operation are explained in detail. The nonlinear difference equations which govern the operation of the digital loop when the incoming signal is embedded in white Gaussian noise are derived, and a suitable model is specified. The performance of the digital loop is considered for the synchronization of a sinusoidal signal. For this, the noise term is suitably modelled which allows specification of the output probabilities for the two level quantizer in the loop at any given phase error. The loop filter considered increases the probability of proper phase correction. The phase error states in modulo two-pi forms a finite state Markov chain which enables the calculation of steady state probabilities, RMS phase error, transient response and mean time for cycle skipping.

Phase operators and phase relations for photon states

For a quantized mode of the radiation field, the operator whose classical analog is the ordinary phase factor of the mode amplitudes has been shown to be nonunitary. A rigorous formulation of the phase P is given on the basis of the canonical factorization theorem. Many of the seemingly complex features of phase operators are found to be simple direct consequences of the general mathematical theory. It can be readily seen that P is a partial isometry but not a unitary operator. In contrast to the amplitude operator, it is found that P is not a spectral operator and that the set of phase eigenstates is not complete. Mathematically precise operator relations are developed, and a complete spectral analysis is given for each of the phase operators.-

Multimegabit Operation Multiplexer System

The Multimegabit Operation Multiplexer System (MOMS) is a high-data-rate PCM telemetry unit capable of sampling and encoding 60 scanning radiometer and four vidicon channels at 250 kilosamples/second and 5 megasamples/second, respectively. This sampling capacity plus the seven-bit quantization requires a total throughput rate of 40 megasamples/second and 280 megabits/second. To produce these rates efficiently, the system was divided into a pair of identical 140-megabit blocks. A low-power 20-MHz analog multiplexer and analog-to-digital converter were developed together with a video sample-and-hold that features an aperture time error of less than 50 psec. Breadboard testing of these basic building blocks confirmed the design prediction that the total system would consume 27 watts of power. Two 140-megabit output parts are suitable for quadriphase modulation.

Transmission of radiometer data from the Synchronous Meteorological Satellite

The Synchronous Meteorological Satellite uses a spin scanner radiometer which generates eight visual signals and two infrared signals. These signals are multiplexed and converted into a 28-Mbps data stream. This signal is transmitted to ground by quadriphase modulation at 1686.1 MHz. On the ground, the digital signal is reconstructed to an analog signal. To conserve bandwidth, an analog-to-digital converter with a nonlinear transfer function was used for the visual signals. The size of the quantization step was made proportional to the noise output of the scanner photomultiplier tube which increases as the square root of incident light. The radiometer data transmission link was simulated on a digital computer to determine the transfer function. Some results of the simulation are shown.
