Erase-mode recording characteristics of photochromic CaF2, SrTiO3, and CaTiO3 crystals.

Erase-mode optical recording characteristics of photochromic crystal wafers of CaF2:La,Na; CaF2:Ce,Na; SrTiO3:Ni,Mo,Al; and CaTiO3:Ni,Mo have been measured. An argon laser operating at 5145 A was used for both optical recording and optical readout. Sensitometric curves of optical-density change versus logarithm of exposure are shown for a number of erase-beam intensities between 0.2 mW/sq cm and 2 W/sq cm. In this range, time-intensity reciprocity holds for the CaF2 materials but fails for the titanates, particularly at low intensities. The dependences of sensitivity, gamma, and maximum transmission contrast ratio on wafer thickness and material are discussed. Wafers of SrTiO3, CaTiO3, and CaF2 exhibiting approximately equal maximum contrast ratios have relative sensitivities approximately in the ratio 5:2:1, respectively, at an erase intensity of 1 W/sq cm.

An improved holographic recording medium

Solid, linear chain hydrocarbons with molecular weight ranging from about 300 to 2000 can serve as long-lived recording medium in optical memory system. Suitable recording hydrocarbons include microcrystalline waxes and low molecular weight polymers or ethylene.

Hologram recording tubes

Optical memories allow extremely large numbers of bits to be stored and recalled in a matter of microseconds. Two recording tubes, similar to conventional image-converting tubes, but having a soft-glass surface on which hologram is recorded, do not degrade under repeated hologram read/write cycles.

On-film optical recording of camera lens settings

An apparatus is described for recording a representation of the camera lens aperture and focus setting on the film of a camera, while the photographic image is being recorded. A data lens is provided between the camera lens and film, by means of which the aperture and focus setting may be determined. The determination is made by measuring both the location and the size of a data image provided by the data lens. The data lens apparatus requires no electrical power, is low in weight, and does not result in an increase in the external dimensions of the camera.

High-data-rate, spacecraft tape recorders.

Description of magnetic head designs, tape transport features, encoding techniques, bit error rates, and data rate capabilities of tape recorders used on board satellites for temporary storage of sensor data. Helical- and transverse-scan rotary head mechanisms used for wideband video signals from imaging systems are explained along with associated electronic circuitry. Decoding and decision procedures employed in multiple-track recorders are outlined, and deskewing electronics are discussed.

Effect of flutter on theoretical bit error rates for digital recording systems.

Tape recorders employed to record and eventually reproduce digital data introduce errors into the data. It is desirable to understand the sources of these errors so that predictions may be made of the resultant error rate. While specific predictions are difficult to apply to whole classes of machines and their respective electronic systems, it is possible to make general predictions which give insight into the problems and processes involved. A heuristic viewpoint is developed for understanding the problems involved in machines and systems that now exist.

Mariner 9 infrared interferometer spectrometer (IRIS) reduced data records documentation

The Mariner 9 spacecraft was successfully inserted into orbit around Mars. One of the five instruments on board, an infrared interferometer spectrometer is used to record the thermal emission spectrum of Mars between 200 and 2000 cm/1. The spatial resolution for vertical viewing is a circular area of approximately 110 km diameter for a periapsis height of 1400 km. The total number of calibrated spectra included in the final data set is 21167. The final calibrated thermal emission spectra contained in the reduced data records are reported.

Device for recording the 20 Hz - 200 KHz sound frequency spectrum using teletransmission

The device described consists of two distinct parts: (1) The sound pickup system consisting of the wide-frequency band condenser microphone which contains in the same assembly the frequency-modulated oscillator and the output stage. Being transistorized and small, this system can be easily moved, so that sounds can be picked up even in places that are difficult to reach with larger devices. (2) The receiving and recording part is separate and can be at a great distance from the sound pickup system. This part contains a 72 MHz input stage, a frequency changer that gives an intermediate frequency of 30 MHz and a multichannel analyzer coupled to an oscilloscope and a recorder.

Measuring probe position recorder

A device which enables a person to record the location of measurements made by a hand held nonconducting probe is described. The hand probe is coupled to a linear potentiometer and a sine-cosine potentiometer by means that varies the output of the linear potentiometer proportional to the distance between the hand probe and the linear potentiometer and that varies the output of the sine-cosine potentiometer proportional to the angular movement of the hand probe relative to the sine-cosine potentiometer. The output of the linear potentiometer is applied directly to one input of the sine-cosine potentiometer and is applied through an inverter to the other input or the sine-cosine potentiometer. The cosine and sine outputs of the sine-cosine potentiometer are applied to the X and Y outputs, respectively, of an X-Y recorder.

Laser recording on MnBi films

The results of laser recording experiments in which a magnetic field controls the magnetization distribution along Curie-point switched micron-wide tracks are described. These experiments showed that analog as well as digital information may be recorded in this manner.

An ultrahigh rate digital tape recorder for spacecraft applications

Spaceborne digital recorders must satisfy the conflicting requirements of maximum data storage of high-rate data (particularly for high-resolution sensor data) and a long life with high reliability (meaning rugged design and moderate head-to-tape speeds). The multitrack longitudinal (fixed head) recorder can successfully resolve this conflict and satisfy both requirements. An evolutionary machine is described which was originally designed to store and reproduce 30 minutes of 39.9-Mb/sec sensor data, for mission lives on the order of one year; newer designs have surpassed these parameters by significant amounts.

Effects of three activities on annoyance responses to recorded flyovers

Human subjects participated in an experiment in which they were engaged in TV viewing, telephone listening, or reverie (no activity) for a 1/2-hour session. During the session, they were exposed to a series of recorded aircraft sounds at the rate of one flight every 2 minutes. At each session, four levels of flyover noise, separated by 5 db increments were presented several times in a Latin Square balanced sequence. The peak levels of the noisiest flyover in any session was fixed at 95, 90, 85, 75, or 70 db. At the end of the test session, subjects recorded their responses to the aircraft sounds, using a bipolar scale which covered the range from very pleasant to extremely annoying. Responses to aircraft noises are found to be significantly affected by the particular activity in which the subjects are engaged.

Analog data recording on MnBi film

High coercive-force films have reduced sensitivity to wall-domain motion and can record at higher spatial frequencies. Tracks switched in high coercive-force films have track widths independent of applied magnetic field. Upper spatial frequency limit recorded by Curie-point switching in alternating field is greater.

In addition, the possible architectures of mass data storage systems have been studied.
