Development of a forced advection sampling technique (FAST) for quantification of methane emissions from orphaned wells

Abstract. Orphaned wells, meaning unplugged and non-producing wells lacking responsible owners, pose a significant and undersampled environmental challenge due to their vast number and unknown associated emissions. We propose, develop and test an alternative method for estimating emissions from orphaned wells using a forced advection sampling technique (FAST) that can overcome many of the limitations in current methods (cost, accuracy, safety). In contrast to existing ambient Gaussian plume methods, our approach uses a fan-generated flow to force advection between the emission source and a point methane (CH4) sensor. The fan flow field is characterized using a colocated sonic anemometer to measure the 3D wind profile generated by the fan. Using time-series measurements of CH4 concentration and wind, a simple estimate of the CH4 emission rate of the source can be inferred. The method was calibrated using outdoor controlled-release experiments and then tested on four orphaned wells in Lufkin, TX, and Osage County, OK. Our results suggest that the FAST method can provide a low-cost, portable, fast and safe alternative to existing methods with reasonable estimates of orphaned well emissions over a range of leak rates below 40 g h−1 and within certain geometric and atmospheric constraints.

CCN PI sample dataset from two BNF facilities

This dataset contains CCN instrument data files showing the sample time series of CCN concentrations in #/cm^3. The file also shows the instrument records and CCN data. The CCN_S20_data_250605000000.csv data file contains information from the S20 facility at Courteland, and the CCN_S30_data_250605000000.csv data file contains information from the S30 facility at Falkville. See the attached CCN-200 Manual for information about the variables and units with the data files.

Photonuclear Production of Radioxenon for Air Samples

Radioxenon plays an important role in ensuring compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty due to its ability to be transported through the atmosphere, as well as the fact that the half-lives of its isotopes provide a window long enough to be detected but not long enough that it could become background radiation. This allows it to be correlated with specific events that indicate the testing of nuclear weapons. Idaho National Laboratory supports this mission by providing spiked air samples for monitoring stations to enable instrument calibration and ensure measurement accuracy. We tested a photonuclear method of producing one of the main isotopes of radioxenon, Xe-135. We also tested the separation of Xe-135 from the parent isotope Xe-136 using the method of kinematic recoil. Aluminum coils were placed in quartz ampoules filled with enriched Xe-136 and were irradiated by a bremsstrahlung beam with an endpoint energy of 21 MeV. The results showed that we were not only successful in producing Xe-135 but also that the Xe-135 was deposited into the coil allowing it to be removed from the Xe-136 gas. The coil and the Xe-135 can then be chemically separated. At the time of counting the coil, it was calculated that there was about 18 Bq of activity from Xe-135 remaining in the coil. Future work includes determining the optimal material and geometry of the catcher to maximize the amount of Xe-135 captured.

Workflow for Process Automation of Soil Gas Results from an Automated Soil Gas-Sampling System for Application in Carbon Storage Projects

Extended abstract for Geoconvention, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, May 12–14, 2025. The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) developed an automated workflow for processing soil gas measurements collected from the automated soil gas-sampling systems deployed across the project site. Raw soil gas measurements are collected from each station every 4 hours and automatically uploaded to a cloud database. The workflow begins by writing code to download the data to a workstation automatically, then the data are published to an online dashboard that visualizes the measurements in time-series plots and a process-based decision-making framework. This automated workflow accelerates the time from data acquisition to decision-making. It supports carbon storage project operators by preparing and delivering a live, standardized dataset for quick analysis and source attribution to provide assurance of containment and overall permit compliance.
