Search strategy effects on PN acquisition performance

The present paper focusses on 'random' and 'expanding window' PN acquisition search strategies and analytically develops the PN acquisition time statistics as functions of salient system parameters such as prediction SNR, detection and false alarm probabilities and a priori information on epoch location. The significance of this analysis is its general applicability to arbitrary postdetection processing schemes. Computed performance results account for the above salient parameters, wherein sequential detection is employed in conjunction with random and selected expanding window search strategies.

A user-operated model to study strategy in aircraft evacuation

A computer model is described to study strategies used by passengers evacuating a burning aircraft. Two baseline cases are presented to demonstrate the model. In the first case, in a simple scenario, strategies were found to change from even movement to the nearest exit to others farthest from the fire. In the second case, a test studying the effects of obstacles on passenger movement, nonlinear effects were found that may increase the time required to escape. The presence of obstacles created bottlenecks and, in some cases, isolated whole sections of the passenger cabin, making it impossible to escape. This occurred even though exits were still available for escape, but passengers could not reach them.

A study of optimal abstract jamming strategies vs. noncoherent MFSK

The present investigation is concerned with the performance of uncoded MFSK modulation in the presence of arbitrary additive jamming, taking into account the objective to devise robust antijamming strategies. An abstract model is considered, giving attention to the signal strength as a nonnegative real number X, the employment of X as a random variable, its distribution function G(x), the transmitter's strategy G, the jamming noise as an M-dimensional random vector Z, and the error probability. A summary of previous work on the considered problem is provided, and the results of the current study are presented.

An efficient iteration strategy for the solution of the Euler equations

A line Gauss-Seidel (LGS) relaxation algorithm in conjunction with a one-parameter family of upwind discretizations of the Euler equations in two-dimensions is described. The basic algorithm has the property that convergence to the steady-state is quadratic for fully supersonic flows and linear otherwise. This is in contrast to the block ADI methods (either central or upwind differenced) and the upwind biased relaxation schemes, all of which converge linearly, independent of the flow regime. Moreover, the algorithm presented here is easily enhanced to detect regions of subsonic flow embedded in supersonic flow. This allows marching by lines in the supersonic regions, converging each line quadratically, and iterating in the subsonic regions, thus yielding a very efficient iteration strategy. Numerical results are presented for two-dimensional supersonic and transonic flows containing both oblique and normal shock waves which confirm the efficiency of the iteration strategy.

Guidance strategies for near-optimum take-off performance in a windshear

This paper is concerned with guidance strategies for near-optimum performance in a windshear. This is a wind characterized by sharp change in intensity and direction over a relatively small region of space. The take-off problem is considered with reference to flight in a vertical plane. First, trajectories for optimum performance in a windshear are determined for different windshear models and different windshear intensities. Use is made of the methods of optimal control theory in conjunction with the dual sequential gradient-restoration algorithm (DSGRA) for optimal control problems. In this approach, global information on the wind flow field is needed. Then, guidance strategies for near-optimum performance in a windshear are developed, starting from the optimal trajectories. Specifically, three guidance schemes are presented: (1) gamma guidance, based on the relative path inclination; (2) theta guidance, based on the pitch attitude angle; and (3) acceleration guidance, based on the relative acceleration. In this approach, local information on the wind flow field is needed.

Simulated performance of an order statistic threshold strategy for detection of narrowband signals

The application of order statistics to signal detection is becoming an increasingly active area of research. This is due to the inherent robustness of rank estimators in the presence of large outliers that would significantly degrade more conventional mean-level-based detection systems. A detection strategy is presented in which the threshold estimate is obtained using order statistics. The performance of this algorithm in the presence of simulated interference and broadband noise is evaluated. In this way, the robustness of the proposed strategy in the presence of the interference can be fully assessed as a function of the interference, noise, and detector parameters.

Flexiwall 3 SO: A second order predictive strategy for rapid wall adjustment in two-dimensional compressible flow

An improvement is presented for the 2-D strategies for adjustment of the flexible top and bottom walls of an Adaptive (Wind Tunnel) Wall Test Section (AWTS). This adjustment is part of the wall adaptation process to eliminate top and bottom wall interference at the source. The improvements to account for second order effects are described in mathematical detail. It is intended that these improvements should further minimize the necessary iterations in the wall adaptation process. An associated computer program written in BASIC is presented and several test cases run with this program are discussed. The strategy performs well for a theoretical test case but when applied to experimental AWTS data some discrepancies in the adapted wall shapes are found.

A flexible search strategy for production systems

Most problems considered to be solvable by expert systems have very large search space. It is imperative to use efficient search strategy in expert system tools. Thus, OPS5 uses a kind of hill climbing which is very efficient. However, hill climbing is inadequate for many problems because it is one of the least dependable search strategies. In order to make the search efficient and adequate one can: (1) adopt best-first search instead of hill climbing, or (2) modify hill climbing with intelligent backtracking. The second alternative is adopted. It is implemented in a production system called PRO2 embedded in C running on UNIX. It is called hill tracking. It is a general purpose tool for developing expert systems. This is a rule based production system with an effective, intelligent and flexible backtracking control mechanism, which makes the system more dependable. The advantages and disadvantages of PRO2 are discussed.

Adaptive control strategies for cooperative dual-arm manipulators

Three strategies for adaptive control of cooperative dual-arm robots are discussed. Implementation of these adaptive controllers does not require the use of complex mathematical models of the arm dynamics or knowledge of the arm dynamic parameters or load parameters. These strategies have simple structures, and are computationally fast for on-line implementation with high sampling rates. In all three cases, the coupling effects between the arms through the load are treated as disturbances which are rejected by the adaptive controllers while following desired commands in a common frame of reference. Simulation results demonstrate the usefulness of the controllers.

Strategies for high-precision Global Positioning System orbit determination

Various strategies for the high-precision orbit determination of the GPS satellites are explored using data from the 1985 GPS field test. Several refinements to the orbit determination strategies were found to be crucial for achieving high levels of repeatability and accuracy. These include the fine tuning of the GPS solar radiation coefficients and the ground station zenith tropospheric delays. Multiday arcs of 3-6 days provided better orbits and baselines than the 8-hr arcs from single-day passes. Highest-quality orbits and baselines were obtained with combined carrier phase and pseudorange solutions.

Optimal reconfiguration strategy for a degradable multimodule computing system

The present quantitative approach to the problem of reconfiguring a degradable multimode system assigns some modules to computation and arranges others for reliability. By using expected total reward as the optimal criterion, there emerges an active reconfiguration strategy based not only on the occurrence of failure but the progression of the given mission. This reconfiguration strategy requires specification of the times at which the system should undergo reconfiguration, and the configurations to which the system should change. The optimal reconfiguration problem is converted to integer nonlinear knapsack and fractional programming problems.

Ion propulsion system design and throttling strategies for planetary missions

This paper describes recent advances in ion propulsion system design which promise to increase the propulsion system reliability by reducing the overall system complexity. The greatest simplification in the overall propulsion system operation is accomplished through a change in the ion engine throttling strategy. By using three grid optics it is possible to effect engine throttling at a constant beam curent over at least a 3.8 to 1 variation in input power. Throttling at a constant beam current results in a single discharge chamber operating point and eliminates the need for active propellant flow controllers and complex engine throttling software. Detailed mission analysis calculations for a CNSR mission performed using this constant beam current throttling strategy indicate only a small reduction in delivered payload and increase in required propellant relative to a conventional throttling profile based on varying the beam curent.
