Clusters in the distribution of pulsars in period, pulse-width, and age

The question of whether pulsars form a single group or whether pulsars come in two or more different groups is discussed. It is proposed that such groups might be related to several factors such as the initial creation of the neutron star, or the orientation of the magnetic field axis with the spin axis. Various statistical models are examined.

Pulse width fluctuations in mode-locked Nd:YAG lasers

The experiment consisted of a flashlamp-pumped Nd:YAG laser rod in the Brewster-Brewster configuration, passively modelocked by a thick flowing dye in contact with the high reflectivity rear mirror. A single pulse was selected by a cylindrical-ring electrode Pockel's cell, and amplified by two Nd:YAG amplifiers. Calibrated photodiodes measured the total pulse energy at the fundamental frequency and the total pulse energy at the second harmonic frequency. The signals were monitored by a digital data acquisition system and displayed on a teletype printer.

The width of electron-photon cascades in air

Results of a Monte-Carlo simulation of electron-photon cascades are presented with particular emphasis on cascade lateral spread. The effects of single and multiple Coulomb scattering are represented by giving the particles suitable displacements in position and angle at each interaction point. Some of the more oblique particle tracks are first divided into a number of steps between interaction points and the scattering procedure is applied to each step separately. To represent the particle defections due the geomagnetic field, a field of 0.3 gauss is supposed present and the appropriate helical path is imposed on each particle between interaction points. The results are in good agreement with the calculations of Nordheim et al., with simulations using the Berger-Seltzer electron photon transport program and with experimental measurements in water.

Pulse-width-modulated high-current power supply

Power supply achieves efficiency rating of approximately 80 percent at rated maximum output current. Protection circuitry prevents logic/memory loads from losing stored data if supply protection circuit initiates power shut down; prevents damage caused by overtemperature condition; protects logic/memory load from undervoltage to overvoltage conditions. Warning signal indicates power shutdown.

Pulse-width-modulated attenuator for AGC

Automatic-gain-control (AGC) circuit regulates gain of intermediate-frequency and radio-frequency signals over wide dynamic range with high linearity and very low phase shift. Device has potential uses in radio and television receivers, signal distribution systems, and test and measurement instruments.

Measurement at different temperatures of absolute intensities, line half-widths, and broadening by Ar and N2 for the 30 0 1 II--00 0 0 band of CO2

Vibration-rotation line intensities, self-broadening coefficients, and foreign-gas-broadening (Ar and N2) coefficients were measured at 197, 233, and 294 K for the 30 0 1 II--00 0 0 band of CO2 at 6348/cm. Values for the total band intensity, purely vibrational transition moment, and vibration-rotation interaction factor were deduced from the measurements.

Washburn extraction and width of the IUE point spread function

The Washburn Extraction Routine for low dispersion IUE spectra was reviewed. The shape of the point spread function (PSF) in low dispersion spectra is sufficiently well described by a gaussian function. The PSF is in large and small aperture essentially identical and values of sigma are presented. Several advantages of the extraction routine are mentioned.

Field size, length, and width distributions based on LACIE ground truth data

The development of agricultural remote sensing systems requires knowledge of agricultural field size distributions so that the sensors, sampling frames, image interpretation schemes, registration systems, and classification systems can be properly designed. Malila et al. (1976) studied the field size distribution for wheat and all other crops in two Kansas LACIE (Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment) intensive test sites using ground observations of the crops and measurements of their field areas based on current year rectified aerial photomaps. The field area and size distributions reported in the present investigation are derived from a representative subset of a stratified random sample of LACIE sample segments. In contrast to previous work, the obtained results indicate that most field-size distributions are not log-normally distributed. The most common field size observed in this study was 10 acres for most crops studied.

Internal and edge cracks in a plate of finite width under bending

Internal and edge cracks were studied by using Reissner's transverse shear theory. The effect of stress-free boundaries on the stress intensity factors in plates under bending were investigated. Among the results found, particularly interesting are those relating to the limiting cases of the crack geometries. The numerical results are given for a single internal crack, two collinear cracks, and two edge cracks. The effect of Poisson's ratio on the stress intensity factors was studied.

Sensitivity of ozone retrievals in limb-viewing experiments to errors in line-width parameters

The variance of atmospheric ozone concentration profiles retrieved in i.r. limb-viewing experiments is examined over the range of published ozone halfwidth values. Simulated retrievals are performed for a typical satellite-based high-resolution absorption experiment and a broad-band emission experiment. The results indicate that, for limb-viewing experiments, inaccurate collision-broadened linewidth values can lead to significant errors in retrieved profiles for broad-band radiometric data or for isolated strong lines in high-resolution spectra.
