An amplitude analysis of Λ c + → p K - π + decays together with a measurement of the Λ c + polarization vector in semiōleptonic beauty hadron decays is presented. A sample of 400 000 candidates is selected from proton-proton collisions recorded by the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. An amplitude model is developed and the resonance fractions as well as two- and three-body decay parameters are reported. The mass and width of the $Λ$(2000) state are also determined. A significant Λ c + polarization is found. A large sensitivity of the Λ c + → p K - π + decay to the polarization is seen, making the amplitude model suitable for Λ c + polarization measurements in other systems.
The polarization of the Λ and $\bar{Λ}$ hyperons along the beam direction has been measured in proton-lead (𝑝-Pb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data were obtained with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 186.0 ± 6.5 nb −1 . A significant azimuthal dependence of the hyperon polarization, characterized by the second-order Fourier sine coefficient 𝑃 𝑧,s2 , is observed. The 𝑃 𝑧,s2 values decrease as a function of charged particle multiplicity, but increase with transverse momentum. A hydrodynamic model that describes the observed 𝑃 𝑧,s2 values in nucleus-nucleus collisions by introducing vorticity effects does not reproduce either the sign or the magnitude of the 𝑝-Pb results. These observations pose a challenge to the current theoretical implementation of spin polarization in heavy ion collisions and offer new insights into the origin of spin polarization in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.
We analyze the potential of rare charm decays as probes of new physics at a high-luminosity flavor facility operating at the Z pole, such as the FCC-ee or CEPC. In particular, we identify clean null-test observables in $D^0 → π^+ π^- v\bar{v}$ and in polarized $Λ^+_c → p ℓ^+ ℓ^-$ decays with $ℓ = e, μ$. Complementarity with the LHC and HL-LHC flavor programs arises from the characteristic features of a Tera-Z environment: the capability to study missing-energy modes and charm production with significant polarization. We improve the theoretical description of $D^0 → π^+ π^- v\bar{v}$ decays and work out the phenomenology of polarization-induced null-test observables in $Λ^+_c → p ℓ^+ ℓ^-$ decays. In regions of dilepton mass near the φ resonance, polarization asymmetries can reach $O$(5%) for muons and $O$(14%) for electrons times the $Λ^+_c$ polarization. We also point out synergies between the dineutrino and the dilepton modes using the SMEFT framework of heavy new physics. Using the IDEA detector concept at FCC-ee, we find in simulation studies that dineutrino branching fractions as low as ~ 2 x 10 -7 can be probed, which reaches well into the parameter space of new physics, and also allows for discrimination of lepton flavor structures. Furthermore, the measurement of asymmetries in $Λ^+_c → p ℓ^+ ℓ^-$ at $O$(1%) will be possible. Similar sensitivities are expected for dielectron final states, although robust predictions will require further dedicated studies.
Hyperon recoil polarization measurements for the exclusive electroproduction of 𝐾 + Λ and 𝐾 + Σ 0 final states from an unpolarized proton target have been carried out using the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The measurements at beam energies of 6.535 and 7.546 GeV span the range of four-momentum transfer 𝑄 2 from 0.3 to 4.5GeV 2 and invariant mass 𝑊 from 1.6 to 2.4 GeV, while covering the full center-of-mass angular range of the 𝐾 + . These new Λ polarization observables extend the existing data in a similar kinematic range but from a significantly larger dataset. However, they represent the first electroproduction measurements of this observable for the Σ 0 . These data will allow for better exploration of the reaction mechanism in strangeness production, for further understanding of the spectrum and structure of excited nucleon states that couple to 𝐾𝑌, and for improved insight into the strong interaction in the nonperturbative domain.
The longitudinal and transverse spin transfers to Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) hyperons in polarized proton-proton collisions are expected to be sensitive to the helicity and transversity distributions, respectively, of (anti)strange quarks in the proton, and to the corresponding polarized fragmentation functions. We report improved measurements of the longitudinal spin transfer coefficient, D LL , and the transverse spin transfer coefficient, D TT , to Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ in polarized proton-proton collisions at √s = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The dataset includes longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 52 pb –1 , and transversely polarized proton-proton collisions with a similar integrated luminosity. Both datasets have about twice the statistics of previous results and cover a kinematic range of |η Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) | < 1.2 and transverse momentum p T , Λ($\overline{Λ}$) up to 8GeV/c. We also report the first measurements of the hyperon spin transfer coefficients D LL and D TT as a function of the fractional jet momentum z carried by the hyperon, which can provide more direct constraints on the polarized fragmentation functions
We present B-, V-, R-, and I-band linear polarimetric observations of 73 stars in the direction of open star cluster Casado Alessi 1 (hereafter Alessi 1). We aim to use polarimetry as a tool to investigate the properties and distribution of dust grains toward the direction of the cluster. The polarimetric observations were carried out using the ARIES IMaging POLarimeter mounted at the 104 cm telescope of ARIES, Nainital (India). Using the Gaia photometric data the age and distance of the cluster are estimated to be 0.8 ± 0.1 Gyr and 673 ± 98 pc, respectively. A total of 66 stars with a 26′ radius from the cluster are identified as members of the cluster using the astrometric approach. Out of these 66 members, 15 stars were observed polarimetrically and found to have the same value of polarization. The majority of the stars in the region follow the general law of polarization for the interstellar medium, indicating that polarization toward the cluster Alessi 1 is dominated by foreground dust grains. The average values of the maximum polarization (P {sub max}) and the wavelength corresponding to the maximum polarization (λ {sub max}) toward the cluster are found to be 0.83 ± 0.03% and 0.59 ± 0.04 μm, respectively. Also, dust grains toward the cluster appear to be aligned, possibly due to the galactic magnetic field.
A measurement of the transverse polarization of the Λ and $\bar{Λ}$ hyperons in p Ne fixed-target collisions at $\sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 68.4 GeV is presented using data collected by the LHCb detector. The polarization is studied using the decay Λ → p $π$ − together with its charge conjugated process, the integrated values measured are $P_Λ = 0.029 ± 0.019$ (stat) $±$ $0.012$ (syst), $P_{\bar{Λ}} = 0.003 ± 0.023$ (stat) $±$ $0.014$ (syst). Furthermore, the results are shown as a function of the Feynman x variable, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and rapidity of the hyperons, and are compared with previous measurements.
The polarization of Λ, $\overline{Λ}$, $Ξ$ – , and $\overline{Ξ}$ + hyperons along the angular momentum of the system has been measured in isobar collisions of Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. The polarization dependence on collision centrality exhibits an increasing trend in more peripheral collisions. Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ polarization dependence on the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity have been investigated, but no significant dependence was observed. The polarizations of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ are found to be consistent with each other, indicating little contribution of the spin-magnetic coupling to the measured polarization. Comparison to previously measured polarization in Au+Au collisions show no obvious system size dependence. The results are qualitatively consistent with hydrodynamic calculations including contributions from shear-induced polarization and thermal vorticity. For the first time in heavy-ion collisions, the dependence of the global polarization on the hyperon’s emission azimuthal angle relative to the second-order event plane has been measured, indicating stronger polarization for the in-plane emitted hyperons at the level of 2.4 σ significance in 20–50 % centrality. The $Ξ$ hyperon polarization measurements via polarization transfer analysis yield finite positive values with 2.9 σ significance in 20–50 % centrality, slightly larger compared to the inclusive Λ polarization.

The polarization of Λ hyperons is preserved in the angular distribution of their decay products. This property allows one to study the spin structure of the Λ. In semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering where a high energy lepton interacts with a nucleon target and one or more hadrons and the scattered lepton are detected in the final state, the probability for a struck quark to impart the polarization of the lepton to the Λ may be measured. In particular, in electron-proton scattering this quantity may be related to the longitudinal light quark polarization of the Λ. Currently, limited experimental data cannot discriminate between different models of Λ spin structure. This work reports on the measurement of the longitudinal spin transfer 𝐷$^{Λ}_{𝐿𝐿′}$ to the Λ using data taken by the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab with a 10.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized hydrogen target. This measurement is the most precise to date, and, in comparison with theory predictions, it offers valuable insight into the relative dominance of current and target fragmentation in Λ production.
Here, we systematically study the hyperon global polarization's sensitivity to the collision systems' initial longitudinal flow velocity in hydrodynamic simulations. By explicitly imposing local energy-momentum conservation when mapping the initial collision geometry to macroscopic hydrodynamic fields, we study the evolution of systems' orbital angular momentum (OAM) and fluid vorticity. We find that a simultaneous description of the $\Lambda$ hyperons' global polarization and the slope of pion's directed flow can strongly constrain the size of longitudinal flow at the beginning of hydrodynamic evolution. We extract the size of the initial longitudinal flow and the fraction of orbital angular momentum in the produced QGP fluid as a function of collision energy with the STAR measurements in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program. We find that there is about 100-200 $\hbar$ OAM that remains in the mid-rapidity fluid at the beginning of hydrodynamic evolution. We further exam the effects of different hydrodynamic gradients on the spin polarization of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$. The gradients of $\mu_B/T$ can change the ordering between $\Lambda$'s and $\bar{\Lambda}$'s polarization.
Relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) as a dedicated nuclear facility has made a few major discoveries in physics. This year marks the 30th year STAR Collaboration formation and the 23th year of STAR detector operation and data collection at RHIC. In the last two decades, STAR has collected many datasets, exhibiting scientific versatility and flexibility of the RHIC facility. The total dataset in the first year is less than 1 million good events, and currently there are about 1 billion events per dataset. The Global Hyperon Polarization was proposed in 2004. This immediately prompted the STAR Collaboration to search for this phenomenon from the early datasets. The null results were presented at Quark Matter Conference in Shanghai in 2006 and subsequently published. Although there were peripheral and continuous efforts in the following decade, no positive result has been observed experimentally. This situation changed in the following decade with the upgrade of high data rate and time-of-flight (TOF) detector and the progress of the Beam Energy Scan Phase I (BES-I). The experimental discoveries of the global polarization of hyperons in 2017 and the spin alignment of vector mesons in 2023 at RHIC-STAR confirm the theory which was established nearly twenty years ago. The theory and these measurements open the way to studying the properties of the hot and dense nuclear matter created in high-energy heavy ion collisions from a new degree of freedom, spin. We briefly review these discoveries from the proposals of theory to the experimental measurements, and summarize the related measurements at the existing facilities and the theoretical explanations to the original proposal. The basic understanding and the original proposal are still valid and fundamental, that is, the angular momentum of system can transform into a spin effect observable in experiment. However, it appears that in each case a new model is needed to explain the new experimental observation. We need a more basic theory to help us unify all these spin related phenomena. Over the past five years, STAR has successfully installed 3 new detectors and we have begun to see the physical analysis results from datasets with those new functions. What makes the STAR detector viable after 20 years of operation is its continuous evolution through successful upgrades, with new scientific programs added year by year. The next big thing is to forward upgrade a tracking system (3 layers of silicon strips and 4 layers of sTGC chambers) and a calorimetry system (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters). In addition to studying the spin structure of protons by using the polarized proton beams at RHIC, the upgrades also provide a unique ability to investigate the origin of Λ Global Polarization as a function of rapidity and rapidity (de-)correlations in Au+Au collisions.
The polarizations of prompt and non-prompt Image 2 and ψ ( 2S ) mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV, using data samples collected by the CMS experiment in 2017 and 2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 103.3 fb − 1 . Based on the analysis of the dimuon decay angular distributions in the helicity frame, the polar anisotropy, λ ϑ , is measured as a function of the transverse momentum, p T , of the charmonium states, in the 25–120 and 20–100 GeV ranges for the Image 2 and ψ ( 2S ) , respectively. The non-prompt polarizations agree with predictions based on the hypothesis that, for p T ≳ 25 GeV , the non-prompt Image 2 and ψ ( 2S ) are predominantly produced in two-body B meson decays. The prompt results clearly exclude strong transverse polarizations, even for p T exceeding 30 times the Image 2 mass, where λ ϑ tends to an asymptotic value around 0.3. Taken together with previous measurements, by CMS and LHCb at s = 7 TeV, the prompt polarizations show a significant variation with p T , at low p T .
We examine the new physics sensitivity of the rare decay Λ b → Λ ν ν ¯ , which can be accessible at future Z -pole machines like Future Circular Collider and Circular Electron Positron Collider. We find that the longitudinal polarization of Λ b baryons produced in Z decays introduces a novel observable, the forward-backward asymmetry A FB ↑ in the angle between the outgoing Λ momentum and the Λ b spin. We provide Standard Model predictions for the Λ b → Λ ν ν ¯ branching ratio and A FB ↑ , and show that future precision measurements of these observables are complementary and probe new physics scales comparable to other b → s ν ν ¯ and b → s ℓ + ℓ − processes. We also show that the zero crossing of the forward-backward asymmetry offers a robust test of form factor calculations independent of new physics. Published by the American Physical Society 2025
The quark–gluon plasma (QGP) produced by collisions between ultrarelativistic heavy nuclei is well described in the language of hydrodynamics. Noncentral collisions are characterized by very large angular momentum, which in a fluid system manifests as flow vorticity. This rotational structure can lead to a spin polarization of the hadrons that eventually emerge from the plasma, and thus these collisions provide experimental access to flow substructure at unprecedented detail. Recently, the first observations of Λ hyperon polarization along the direction of collisional angular momentum were reported. These measurements are in broad agreement with hydrodynamic and transport-based calculations and reveal that the QGP is the most vortical fluid ever observed. However, there remain important tensions between theory and observation that might be fundamental in nature. In the relatively mature field of heavy-ion physics, the discovery of global hyperon polarization and 3D simulations of the collision have opened an entirely new direction of research. We discuss the current status of this rapidly developing area and directions for future research.
The polarization of inclusive J/ψ and Υ(1S) produced in Pb–Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02 TeV at the LHC is measured with the ALICE detector. The study is carried out by reconstructing the quarkonium through its decay to muon pairs in the rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4 and measuring the polar and azimuthal angular distributions of the muons. The polarization parameters λ θ , λ φ and λ θφ are measured in the helicity and Collins-Soper reference frames, in the transverse momentum interval 2 < p T < 10 GeV/c and p T < 15 GeV/c for the J/ψ and Υ(1S), respectively. The polarization parameters for the J/ψ are found to be compatible with zero, within a maximum of about two standard deviations at low p T , for both reference frames and over the whole p T range. The values are compared with the corresponding results obtained for pp collisions at √s = 7 and 8 TeV in a similar kinematic region by the ALICE and LHCb experiments. Although with much larger uncertainties, the polarization parameters for Υ(1S) production in Pb–Pb collisions are also consistent with zero
