Auroral excitation of the N2 2P(0,0) and VK(0,9) bands

The low-energy secondary electron flux caused by auroral electron precipitation is examined using data from the Atmosphere Explorer C satellite. An energetic electron transport algorithm is used to compute the differential electron flux produced by measured primaries. Emissions of N2 in the 2P(0,0) band at 337 nm and the VK(0,9) band at 335 nm predicted by the model are compared with photometric observation of their combined volume emission rate altitude profile made by the visible airglow experiment. Reasonable correspondence between model and measurement is obtained. Ratios of emissions at 337 nm and 630 nm to the N2(+) 1N(0,0) band at 428 nm are also studied. It is concluded that the 337/428 nm ratio responds to changes in the characteristic energy of primary auroral electrons only insofar as part of the 337 nm brightness is due to N2 VK(0,9) emission. The 630/428 nm ratio, which is strongly dependent on characteristic energy, also varies significantly with changes in atomic oxygen density.

Search for Rare Decays of D s + to Final States π + e + e − , ρ + e + e − , π + π 0 e + e − , K + π 0 e + e − , and K S 0 π + e + e −

Using 7.33 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies in the range of s = 4.128 – 4.226 GeV , we search for the rare decays D s + → h + ( h 0 ) e + e − , where h represents a kaon or pion. By requiring the e + e − invariant mass to be consistent with a ϕ ( 1020 ) , 0.98 < M ( e + e − ) < 1.04 GeV / c 2 , the decay D s + → π + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − is observed with a statistical significance of 7.8 σ , and evidence for the decay D s + → ρ + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − is found for the first time with a statistical significance of 4.4 σ . The decay branching fractions are measured to be B ( D s + → π + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − ) = ( 1.1 7 − 0.21 + 0.23 ± 0.03 ) × 10 − 5 , and B ( D s + → ρ + ϕ , ϕ → e + e − ) = ( 2.4 4 − 0.62 + 0.67 ± 0.16 ) × 10 − 5 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. No significant signals for the three four-body decays of D s + → π + π 0 e + e − , D s + → K + π 0 e + e − , and D s + → K S 0 π + e + e − are observed. For D s + → π + π 0 e + e − , the ϕ mass region is vetoed to minimize the long-distance effects. The 90% confidence level upper limits set on the branching fractions of these decays are in the range of ( 7.0 – 8.1 ) × 10 − 5 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of Ω c 0 baryon production and branching-fraction ratio BR ( Ω c 0 → Ω - e + ν e ) / BR ( Ω c 0 → Ω - π + ) in p p collisions at s = 13 TeV

The inclusive production of the charm-strange baryon $Ω^0_c$ is measured for the first time via its semileptonic decay into $Ω$ - e + ν e at midrapidity (|y| < 0.8) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the center-of mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The transverse momentum (p T ) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 2 < p T < 12 GeV=c. The branching-fraction ratio BR($Ω^0_c$ → $Ω$ - e + ν e )/BR($Ω^0_c$→ Ω - π + ) is measured to be 1.12 ± 0.22 (stat) ± 0.27 (syst). Comparisons with other experimental measurements, as well as with theoretical calculations, are presented

Measurement at different temperatures of absolute intensities, line half-widths, and broadening by Ar and N2 for the 30 0 1 II--00 0 0 band of CO2

Vibration-rotation line intensities, self-broadening coefficients, and foreign-gas-broadening (Ar and N2) coefficients were measured at 197, 233, and 294 K for the 30 0 1 II--00 0 0 band of CO2 at 6348/cm. Values for the total band intensity, purely vibrational transition moment, and vibration-rotation interaction factor were deduced from the measurements.

The v = 0 - 0 spectrum of H2

Ground-state rotational parameters for molecular hydrogen are evaluated using a combination of laboratory and observational data. High-accuracy v = 0 - 0 S(0)-S(5) frequencies from infrared laboratory measurements are analyzed simultaneously with available observed frequencies for the S(8), S(9), S(12), S(13), S(14), and S(15) Orion emission lines. The laboratory and Orion measurements are consistent with each other within their measurement errors. The combined data set yields a determination of five v = 0 rotational parameters and an improvement in the high-J calculated line positions. The analysis produces the parameters (in per cm): B(0) = 59.334627(30), D(0) = 0.0456912(30), H(0) = 4.8974(90) x 10 to the -5th, L(0) = -6.320(110) x 10 to the -8th, M(0) = 7.19(30) x 10 to the -11th, where a correction is made for the estimated contribution of sixth and higher orders.

Search for Time-Dependent C P Violation in D 0 → π + π − π 0 Decays

A measurement of time-dependent C P violation in D 0 → π + π − π 0 decays using a p p collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment in 2012 and from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.7 fb − 1 , is presented. The initial flavor of each D 0 candidate is determined from the charge of the pion produced in the D * ( 2010 ) + → D 0 π + decay. The decay D 0 → K − π + π 0 is used as a control channel to validate the measurement procedure. The gradient of the time-dependent C P asymmetry Δ Y in D 0 → π + π − π 0 decays is measured to be Δ Y = ( − 1.3 ± 6.3 ± 2.4 ) × 10 − 4 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, which is compatible with C P conservation. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

High resolution absorption cross-sections and band oscillator strengths of the Schumann-Runge absorption bands of isotopic oxygen, (0-16)(0-18), at 79 K

Cross-sections of (0-16)(0-18) at 79 K have been obtained from photoabsorption measurements on mixtures of (0-16)2, (0-18)2, and (0-16)(0-18) at various pressures throughout the wavelength region 180.5-195.3 nm with a 6.65 m photoelectric scanning spectrometer equipped with a 2400 lines/mm grating and having an instrumental width (FWHM) of 0.0013 nm. The measured absorption cross-sections of the (0-16)(0-18) Schumann-Runge bands (11.0)-(3.0) are independent of the instrumental width. The measured cross-sections are presented graphically.

Investigating the composition of the $K$$^{*}_{0}$(700) state with π ± $K$$^{0}_{S}$ correlations at the LHC

The first measurements of femtoscopic correlations with the particle pair combinations π ± $K$$^{0}_{S}$ in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are reported by the ALICE experiment. Using the femtoscopic approach, it is shown that it is possible to study the elusive $K$$^{*}_{0}$(700) particle that has been considered a tetraquark candidate for over forty years. Source and final-state interaction parameters are extracted by fitting a model assuming a Gaussian source to the experimentally measured two-particle correlation functions. The final-state interaction in the π ± $K$$^{0}_{S}$ system is modeled through a resonant scattering amplitude, defined in terms of a mass and a coupling parameter, The extracted mass and Breit–Wigner width, derived from the coupling parameter, of the final-state interaction are found to be consistent with previous measurements of the $K$$^{*}_{0}$ (700). The small value and increase of the correlation strength with increasing source size support the hypothesis that the $K$$^{*}_{0}$(700) is a four-quark state, i.e. a tetraquark state of the form (q 1 , $\bar{q}$ 2 , q 3 , $\bar{q}$ 3 ) in which q 1 , q 2 and q 3 indicate the flavor of the valence quarks of the π and $K$$^{0}_{S}$. This latter trend is also confirmed via a simple geometric model that assumes a tetraquark structure of the $K$$^{*}_{0}$(700) resonance.

Search for B 0 → K *0 𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − Decays at the Belle II Experiment

We present a search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay 𝐵 0 →𝐾 *0 ⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − with data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The analysis uses a 365 fb −1 data sample recorded at the center-of-mass energy of the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance. One of the 𝐵 mesons produced in the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆)→𝐵 0 $⁢\overline{𝐵}$ 0 process is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while its companion 𝐵 meson is required to decay into a 𝐾 *0 and two 𝜏 leptons of opposite charge. The 𝜏 leptons are reconstructed in final states with a single electron, muon, charged pion or charged 𝜌 meson, and additional neutrinos. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction of ℬ⁡(𝐵 0 →𝐾 *0 ⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − )<1.8×10 −3 at the 90% confidence level, which is the most stringent constraint reported to date.

First detection of the ground-state J(K) = 1(0)-0(0) submillimeter transition of interstellar ammonia

The JK = 1 sub 0 approaching 0 sub 0 transition of ammonia at 572.5 GHz was detected in OMC-1 from NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The central velocity of the line (VLSR approximately = 9 km/s) indicates that it originates in the molecular cloud material, not the hot core. The derived filling factor of approximately 0.09 in a 2' beam implies a source diameter of approximately 35' if it is a single clump. This clump area is much larger than that derived from observations of the sub 1 inversion transition. The larger optical depth in the 1 sub 0 approaching 0 sub 0 transition (75-350) can account for the increased source area and linewidth as compared with those seen in the 1 sub 0 inversion transition. Previously announced in STAR as N83-25630
