2008 East Tennessee Household Travel Survey

The 2008 East Tennessee Household Travel Survey, conducted by NuStats, was a comprehensive study of travel behavior in Knox, Blount, Anderson, Jefferson, Loudon, Roane, Sevier, and Union counties. The purpose of the survey was to collect weekday travel characteristics of households in the eight-county region during a 24-hour timeframe. The data will be used by the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization and local agencies to update transportation and air quality models and to identify transportation needs in the region. The survey collected demographic and travel data from a sample of 1,400 households between February and May 2008. In total, 12,012 trips were reported by 3,301 persons.

Puget Sound Regional Council 2006 Household Activity Survey

The purpose of the 2006 Puget Sound Regional Council Household Activity Survey was to provide data for travel demand models for the Puget Sound region, for the assessment of current activity and travel patterns, and for the estimation of future activity and travel within the region under various policy scenarios. One important goal of this project is to improve planners' ability to evaluate impacts of future policies and actions on travel patterns and transportation facility use through the development of a database. This database both captures the current status of activity and travel in the region and includes attitudes, preferences, and choices about activities and travel. In the design of the 2006 survey, basic demographics, activities, and tour and travel characteristics were collected for every member (including children) of 4,746 households during a consecutive 48-hour travel period. Vehicle global positioning system (GPS) data were collected from a subsample of 220 of these households, including completed activity/travel diaries for each household member. (Up to three vehicles per household were equipped with GPS units). The final GPS tracking data contained detailed information on the travel paths of 220 households with two vehicles in the same 48-hour period recorded in the diaries.

2000 The Twin Cities Metropolitan Area Travel Behavior Inventory

The 2000 Twin Cities Metropolitan Area Travel Behavior Inventory, conducted by Twin Cities Metropolitan Council—Saint Paul, was the first major travel survey in the region since 1990. The 2000 inventory includes a home interview survey, an establishment survey, a transit survey, external station traffic counts, and an external station origin/destination survey. The study area under the household inventory survey included the seven counties of the regional Metropolitan Planning Organization and thirteen adjacent counties. Demographic, socioeconomic, and travel data were gathered for 6,386 households. Of these, 6,219 households completed the travel logs, which includes household members older than five years old.

2000-2001 California Statewide Household Travel Survey

The 2000-2001 California Statewide Household Travel Survey, conducted under the auspices of the California Department of Transportation, was conducted between October 2000 and December 2001 among households located in each of California's 58 counties. The purpose of the study was to update the statewide database of household socioeconomic and travel information and helped to refine travel estimates, models, and forecasts throughout California. The survey was an essential element in determining statewide and regional travel patterns. A total of 17,040 households participated in the survey, contributing household socioeconomic and travel data. Travel variables collected include trip times, mode, activity at location, origin and destination, and vehicle occupancy, among other travel-related data from 134,173 trips. Residents completed diary records of their daily travel over a 24-hour (weekday) or 48-hour period (Friday/Saturday or Sunday/Monday pair).

2000 Evansville Household Travel Survey

The Evansville Metropolitan Planning Organization conducted a household travel survey in 2000. This study aimed to produce a detailed analysis of travel behavior for the residents of the Evansville Metropolitan Area. The survey contains data from 1,737 participating households. From participants' travel records, a total of 20,096 trips were reported by 4,069 people for a 24-hour period.

1982 The Twin Cities Metropolitan Area Travel Behavior Inventory

The purpose of the 1982 Travel Behavior Inventory was to update socioeconomic and travel data gathered in a 1970 home interview survey. The area in Minnesota studied included the counties of Ramsey, Hennepin, Dakota, Anoka, Washington, Carver, and Scott. The inventory collected demographic and travel data from September 1, 1982, to February 27, 1983. The survey contains data from 2,640 participating households. From participants' travel records, a total of 21,944 trips were reported by 6,059 household members for a 24-hour period.

2001-2003 Ohio Statewide Household Travel Survey

The purpose of this study, conducted under the auspices of the Ohio Department of Transportation between August 2001 and May 2003, was to update the statewide database of household socioeconomic and travel information. Data insights were used to refine travel estimates, models, and forecasts throughout Ohio and specifically for the nine smallest metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs). The study area consists of all Ohio counties except for those that are within the MPO boundaries of Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus. The study is an essential element in determining statewide and regional travel patterns. A total of 16,112 households provided recruitment and travel/activity data, and the information was retrieved from all household members regardless of age. A total of 122,463 trips were profiled during the survey during the 24-hour assigned weekday.

The California Statewide Travel Survey was conducted in 1991. Data were collected from 17,040 households throughout the state, with a minimum of 500 samples in any one region. The survey was primarily used to update trip generation rates.

2004 Kansas City Regional Household Travel Survey

The 2004 Regional Household Travel Survey documented the travel behavior characteristics of Kansas City residents to update the area's transportation model. The Mid-America Regional Council and the Kansas and Missouri Departments of Transportation sponsored the survey, which was administered by NuStats. Activity and travel information was collected for all household members, regardless of age, during a specific 24-hour period. It relied on the willingness of households to provide demographic information about its members and vehicles and to have all household members record all travel and activity for a specific 24-hour period. The study also included a subsample of household vehicles with global positioning system (GPS) devices. The objectives of the GPS component were twofold: (1) to provide an independent data stream of vehicular travel in order to measure the accuracy of the travel data reported over the telephone, and (2) to obtain details about those trips that were captured by GPS but not reported over the telephone, in order to derive a trip-correction factor.

2014 Madison County, Indiana, Heartland in Motion Transportation Study

The 2014 Heartland in Motion Transportation Study collected household demographics and travel information from Madison County, Indiana, residents and evaluated preferred travel options between the county and Indianapolis, Indiana. Resource Systems Group administered the study for the Madison County Council of Governments. Prior to conducting the main survey in February to March 2014, a pilot study was conducted in December 2013 to evaluate the methods, approach, and response rates. The main study data collection occurred while public schools were in session, prior to spring break, and included a household travel survey and stated preference experiments. Households were asked to provide details of their trips for one weekday.

2008 NIRPC Household Travel Inventory

The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) Household Travel Inventory, also sponsored by the Indiana Department of Transportation, is a comprehensive study of the demographic and travel of residents of Lake, Porter, and La Porte counties in northwest Indiana. The primary objective of the study was to provide data for the continued development and refinement of the Indiana regional travel demand forecast models. 3,838 households from northwest Indiana participated in the survey, which entailed the collection of activity and travel information for all household members regardless of age during a randomly assigned 24- or 48-hour period. NIRPC travel survey data provided the information required on base-year daily trips made by study area residents to the Chicago CBD. This travel market is treated separately because of the importance of transit for its travelers.

2000 Knoxville Urban Area Household Travel Behavior Survey

This survey, conducted by NuStats, was a comprehensive study of travel behavior in Knox and Blount counties in the Knoxville urban area. The purpose of the survey was to collect weekday travel characteristics of household members (ages five and older) in the counties during a 24-hour timeframe. The data will be used by the Knoxville Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and local agencies to update transportation and air quality models and to identify transportation needs in the region. The survey was conducted between November 2000 and February 2001. In total, 2,674 households were recruited to participate in the survey. Of these, 1,538 households reported data from a one-day travel log, totaling 12,631 trips by 3,522 persons. Of all trips originating in the study area, three-fourths were made by persons residing in Knox County.

2001 KIPDA Regional Household Travel Survey

The Kentuckiana Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA) conducted this four-month study from October 2000 through January 2001 to update regional travel demand models. The universe for the survey consisted of households in the five-county Louisville transportation planning study area, including Clark and Floyd counties in Indiana and Bullitt, Jefferson, and Oldham counties in Kentucky. Demographic variables and travel behavior characteristics were collected for 4,433 households in a 24-hour period. Of these, 4,113 were completed with households that were selected at random, and the remaining 320 were completed with representatives. The data from the survey only reflect travel by the selected residents of the five counties listed above and do not account for travel in the region by persons who were not residents of those five counties.

2001 Household Travel Survey: Baltimore Region Analysis

The Baltimore Metropolitan Council conducted the Baltimore Regional Household Travel Survey to collect demographic and travel features. The travel data mainly focus on weekday travel, collecting 27,363 one-day travel itineraries from 3,131 Baltimore-region households in June 2001. The council also sampled a smaller survey of 325 households to obtain weekend travel behavior.

1988/1989 Maricopa Household Travel Study

This study was commissioned by the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Transportation and Planning Office. The primary objectives of this study were to update the trip generation rates used in the MAG travel demand forecasting process and to provide data to validate the MAG trip distribution model. Demographic, socioeconomic, and travel data was collected for 2,992 households residing within the MAG Urban Planning Area. Respondents were asked to record their travel and activities for a 24-hour period. A total of 26,733 trips were recorded by 6,463 people.

The 1990 San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission Household Survey

The San Francisco Bay Area's Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the regional transportation planning agency for the nine-county Bay Area conducted the survey. The basic purpose for the survey was for the development of travel demand models to simulate the various components of travel behavior: auto ownership, trip frequency (trip generation), and the distribution of trips between origins and destinations by travel mode. Planners at MTC envisioned the 1990 survey as the first wave of a multi-wave household panel survey designed to capture both short- and long-term changes in regional travel behavior. The 1990 survey collected single-weekday travel data from nearly 9,900 Bay Area households and multiple-weekday travel data from nearly 1,500 households. The 1990 survey effort also included a separate sub-project, funded by the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) District, to collect multiple-weekday travel data from 1,000 BART-using households. The BART survey and the MTC multiple-weekday survey were completed in the spring of 1990; the MTC single-weekday survey was continued and completed during the autumn of 1990.

2003 Yakima County Household Travel Survey

The Yakima County Household Travel Survey was sponsored by the Yakima County Department of Public Works in Yakima, Washington, and it was conducted over a six-month period from December 2002 through June 2003. The study is an essential element in the transportation planning and modeling efforts for Yakima County. The purpose of the survey was to gather data on the socioeconomic characteristics and travel behavior of county residents, including household characteristics, person characteristics, vehicle characteristics, and travel-activity patterns. A total of 1,503 households were recruited to participate in the study, 1,107 of which provided travel data for all household members age 16 and older. Unweighted, the 1,107 households represent 3,084 persons (of which 2,221 were age 16 and older), had 2,138 vehicles available to them, and recorded a total of 7,369 trips.

1988 Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission Household Travel Survey

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission conducted household travel surveys in 1988 for the Delaware Valley region of Pennsylvania, which consists of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. The home interview travel survey was intended to measure the travel habits of area residents, and it generated needed information on trip generation rates, trip distribution, and model choice. This information was used for model calibration and validation on the trip generation, trip distribution, and model split models. The data includes demographic and socioeconomic details, as well as travel patterns, for 1,567 households. A total of 5,733 people reported a total of 18,899 trips. The survey was conducted on a weekday, Monday through Friday, and only ten survey locations contained weekend day travel.
