A SIFT ion-molecule study of some reactions in Titan's atmosphere. reactions of N(+), N(2)(+), and HCN(+) with CH(4), C(2)H(2), and C(2)H(4)

The results of a study of the ion-molecule reactions of N(+), N(2)(+), and HCN(+) with methane, acetylene, and ethylene are reported. These studies were performed using the FA-SIFT at the University of Canterbury. The reactions studied here are important to understanding the ion chemistry in Titan's atmosphere. N(+) and N(2)(+) are the primary ions formed by photo-ionization and electron impact in Titan's ionosphere and drive Titan's ion chemistry. It is therefore very important to know how these ions react with the principal trace neutral species in Titan's atmosphere: Methane, acetylene, and ethylene. While these reactions have been studied before the product channels have been difficult to define as several potential isobaric products make a definitive answer difficult. Mass overlap causes difficulties in making unambiguous species assignments in these systems. Two discriminators have been used in this study to resolve the mass overlap problem. They are deuterium labeling and also the differences in reactivities of each isobar with various neutral reactants. Several differences have been found from the products in previous work. The HCN(+) ion is important in both Titan's atmosphere and in the laboratory.

Substituted 1,1,1-triaryl 2,2,2-trifluoroethanes and processes for their synthesis

Synthetic procedures to tetraalkyls, tetraacids, and dianhydrides substituted 1,1,1-triaryl 2,2,2-trifluoroethanes which comprises: (1) 1,1-bis(dialkylaryl) 1-aryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, (2) 1,1-bis(dicarboxyaryl) 1-aryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, or (3) cyclic dianhydride or diamine of 1,1-bis(dialkylaryl) 1-aryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethanes. The synthesis of (1) is accomplished by the condensation reaction of an aryltrifluoromethyl ketone with a dialkylaryl compound. The synthesis of (2) is accomplished by oxidation of (1). The synthesis dianhydride of (3) is accomplished by the conversion of (2) to its corresponding cyclic dianhydride. The synthesis of the diamine is accomplished by the similar reaction of an aryltrifluoromethyl ketone with aniline or alkyl substituted or disubstituted anilines. Also, other derivatives of the above are formed by nucleophilic displacement reactions.

Interactions Between Oxygen and Nitrogen: O[Single Bond]N, O[Single Bond]N (sub 2), and O (sub 2)[Single Bond]N (sub 2)

Potential energy curves for 0-N interactions corresponding to the X (sup 2) II (sub t/2), X (sup 2) II (sub 3/2), A (sup 2) Eta (sup plus), B (sup 2) II, C (sup 2) II, D (sup 2) Eta (sup plus), E (sup 2) Eta (sup plus), and B prime (sup 2 delta) states of nitric oxide have been calculated from spectroscopic data by the Rydberg- Klein-Rees method. Curves for the (sup 4) II, (sup 2) Eta, (sup 4) Eta, (sup 6) Eta, and (sup 6) II states have been obtained from limited spectroscopic results and from relations derived from approximate quantum-mechanical calculations. Two semi-independent calculations have been made, and are in good agreement with each other. The quantum-mechanical relations also lead to approximate curves for the O[Single Bond]N, and O[Single Bond]N (sub 2) interactions over a limited range. The O (sub 2)[Single Bond]N (sub 2) interaction is consistent with one valid at larger separation distances which has been derived from high-temperature gas viscosity data.

The nu(sub 2) and 2nu(sub 2) - nu(sub 2) bands of N-14 (16)O2: Electron Spin-Rotation and Hyperfine Contact Resonances in the (010) Vibrational State

High-resolution Fourier transform spectra covering the 720-9-10/ cm spectral region have been used to perform a reanalysis of the 2nu(sub 2) band ((010) - (000) vibrational transition) together with the first analysis of the nu(sub 2) - nu(sub 2) hot band of nitrogen dioxide ((020)-(010) vibrational transition). The high-quality spectra show that, for numerous nu(sub 2) lines, the hyperfine structure is easily observable in the case of resonances due to the hyperfine Fermi-type operator. By performing a full treatment of the spin-rotation and of the hyperfine operators, a near line list of the nu(sub 2) band (positions and intensities) has been generated, and it is in excellent agreement with the experimental spectrum. Also, a thorough analysis of the -2nu(sub 2) nu(sub 2) hot band has been performed leading to an extended set of new (020) spin-rotation levels, These levels, together with the (100), (020), (001) spin-rotation levels deduced previously from the analysis of thenu(sub 1), 2nu(sub 2), and nu(sub 3) cold bands performed in the 6.3 - to 7.5 microns spectral range were least-squares fitted, allowing one to derive a new set of vibrational band centers and rotational. spin-rotation, and interaction constants for the {(100)(020)(001)} interacting states of N-14(16)O2.

Space Station needs, attributes and architectural options. Volume 2, book 2, part 2, Task 2: Information management system

Missions to be performed, station operations and functions to be carried out, and technologies anticipated during the time frame of the space station were examined in order to determine the scope of the overall information management system for the space station. This system comprises: (1) the data management system which includes onboard computer related hardware and software required to assume and exercise control of all activities performed on the station; (2) the communication system for both internal and external communications; and (3) the ground segment. Techniques used to examine the information system from a functional and performance point of view are described as well as the analyses performed to derive the architecture of both the onboard data management system and the system for internal and external communications. These architectures are then used to generate a conceptual design of the onboard elements in order to determine the physical parameters (size/weight/power) of the hardware and software. The ground segment elements are summarized.

High-temperature polyimides prepared from 2,2-bis-[(2-halo-4-aminophenoxy)-phenyl]hexafluoropropane

There are provided the aromatic diamines 2,2-bis-[(2-halo-4-aminophenoxy)-phenyl]hexafluoropropane, where the attached ortho halogen is preferably chlorine, and 4,4'-bis(4-aminophenoxy)biphenyl, as novel monomers for polyimide polymerizations. The former, when reacted with 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride, provides a polyimide having exceptional high-temperature performance. The latter diamine is a low-cost monomer for polyimide production.

Blade loss transient dynamics analysis, volume 2. Task 2: TETRA 2 user's manual

This is the user's manual for the TETRA 2 Computer Code, a program developed in the NASA-Lewis Blade Loss Program. TETRA 2 calculates a turbine engine's dynamic structural response from applied stimuli. The calculation options are: (1) transient response; and (2) steady state forced response. Based on the method of modal syntheses, the program allows the use of linear, as well as nonlinear connecting elements. Both transient and steady state options can include: flexible Bladed Disk Module, and Nonlinear Connecting Elements (including deadband, hardening/softening spring). The transient option has the additional capability to calculate response with a squeeze film bearing module. TETRA 2 output is summarized in a plotfile which permits post processing such as FFT or graphical animation with the proper software and computer equipment.

Theoretical study of the bonding in LaFe(2+), LaRu(2+) and YRu(2+)

The bonding in LaFe(2+) and LaRu(2+) involves nearly equal contributions from La(+) and La(2+). The second IP of Y is larger than that of La and this leads to predominantly Y(+) + Ru(+) character in the YRu(2+) wavefunction. The remarkable stability of these systems derives from multiple d-d bonds that lead to a bond-order of between two and three. Thus the ground states of these dications, which have relatively deep molecular wells and large barriers to dissociation, have essentially infinite lifetimes with respect to unimolecular decay.

The Rotational Spectra of IO X(sub 1) (sup 2)pi(sub 3/2), v <= 13 and X(sub 2) (sup 2)pi(sub 1/2), v <= 9

The rotational spectra of IO in vibrational states up to v = 13 in the X(sub 1) (sup 2)pi(sub 3/2) state and up to v = 9 in the X2 (sup 2)pi(sub 1/2) state have been observed in an O2 discharge over molecular I2. In addition, I(18)O has been observed for both the X(sub 1) and X(sub 2) states up to v = 5. All data have been analyzed simultaneously with fixed isotopic ratios among the constants. This extends the data set for the X(sub 1) state described last year at this meeting and provides the first high resolution data for the X(sub 2) state and for I(18)O. An extensive set of parameters has been derived. These will be interpreted in terms of the electronic structure and the interatomic potential.

Interaction Energies for the H-H (sub 2) and H (sub 2) - H (sub 2) System

Interaction energies for the H-H (sub 2) and H (sub 2) - H (sub 2) systems have been obtained by a semi-empirical perfect-pairing procedure used previously. The results have been compared with interaction energies obtained from other sources and the agreement among the different curves is reasonably good. A brief discussion of the previous applications of this semi-empirical scheme to other systems is included.
