The fluid definition of the ‘waters of the United States’: Non-uniform effects of regulation on US wetland protections

Recent revisions to the definition of the ‘waters of the United States’ (WOTUS) have considerably altered how wetlands are federally regulated under the Clean Water Act. The two most recent modifications to WOTUS, the Clean Water Rule (CWR) and the Navigable Waters Protection Rule (NWPR), represent two opposing approaches to the federal wetland policy. The impacts of these two rules on the regulation of wetlands have as of yet been poorly characterized at broad spatial scales. Using New York State (NYS) as a case study, we evaluated the jurisdictional statuses of more than 253 000 wetlands under the CWR and the NWPR to assess the landscape-scale effects of WOTUS re-definitions. Here, we found that statewide and within each of NYS's hydrologic regions, the NWPR protects fewer wetlands and less total wetland area than the CWR. The efficacy of the two regulations varied considerably in space across NYS, highlighting the need for comprehensive, nationwide assessments of wetland policy outcomes. We also observed that both rules produced non-uniform patterns in jurisdiction across a range of landscape positions and wetland sizes, preferentially protecting large wetlands close to the stream network. This effect was particularly pronounced under the NWPR, which excludes all geographically isolated wetlands from protection. Our findings in NYS emphasize the existence of unique patterns in protected wetlands across spatial scales, highlighting the value in applying geospatial analyses to evaluate environmental policy.

Unexpected structural/motional mode of water intercalated into an α-crystalline zirconium phosphate deduced by 31 P and 2 H solid-state MAS NMR spectra

Here, in developing the approach to understanding dynamics of intercalates in layered materials, crystalline-layered zirconium phosphate Zr (HPO 4 ) 2 ·0.35D2O has been prepared and characterized by the 1 H, 31 P, and 2 H solid-state MAS NMR spectra, including 31 P and 2 H T 1 measurements. At temperatures >253 K, the intercalated water shows two spectrally-distinguished deuterons unprecedentedly with different DQCC's and 2 H T 1 times, one of which is hydrogen bonded. The collected data allowed to identify an unexpected bonding/dynamic mode of water molecules, which experience fast rotation around the hydrogen bond, formed with a zirconium-coordinated oxygen. The low-temperature 2 H MAS NMR experiments have demonstrated the presence of additional hydrogen bond P—(H)O˙˙˙ DO, population of which grows on cooling to 195 K corresponding to the doubly hydrogen-bonded immobile water molecule.

Carbonate clumped isotope analysis (Δ 47 ) of 21 carbonate standards determined via gas‐source isotope‐ratio mass spectrometry on four instrumental configurations using carbonate‐based standardization and multiyear data sets

Rationale Clumped isotope geochemistry examines the pairing or clumping of heavy isotopes in molecules and provides information about the thermodynamic and kinetic controls on their formation. The first clumped isotope measurements of carbonate minerals were first published 15 years ago, and since then, interlaboratory offsets have been observed, and laboratory and community practices for measurement, data analysis, and instrumentation have evolved. Here we briefly review historical and recent developments for measurements, share Tripati Lab practices for four different instrument configurations, test a recently published proposal for carbonate‐based standardization on multiple instruments using multi‐year data sets, and report values for 21 different carbonate standards that allow for recalculations of previously published data sets. Methods We examine data from 4628 standard measurements on Thermo MAT 253 and Nu Perspective IS mass spectrometers, using a common acid bath (90°C) and small‐sample (70°C) individual reaction vessels. Each configuration was investigated by treating some standards as anchors (working standards) and the remainder as unknowns (consistency standards). Results We show that different acid digestion systems and mass spectrometer models yield indistinguishable results when instrument drift is well characterized. For linearity correction, mixed gas‐and‐carbonate standardization or carbonate‐only standardization yields similar results. No difference is observed in the use of three or eight working standards for the construction of transfer functions. Conclusions We show that all configurations yield similar results if instrument drift is robustly characterized and validate a recent proposal for carbonate‐based standardization using large multiyear data sets. Δ 47 values are reported for 21 carbonate standards on both the absolute reference frame (ARF; also refered to as the Carbon Dioxide Equilibrated Scale or CDES) and the new InterCarb‐Carbon Dioxide Equilibrium Scale (I‐CDES) reference frame, facilitating intercomparison of data from a diversity of labs and instrument configurations and restandardization of a broad range of sample sets between 2006, when the first carbonate measurements were published, and the present.

Measurement of the branching fraction of ${\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+}$ → τ + ν τ via τ + → μ+ν μ $\overline{\nu}$τ

Utilizing 7 . 33 fb - 1 of e + e - collision data taken at the center-of-mass energies of 4.128, 4.157, 4.178, 4.189, 4.199, 4.209, 4.219, and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, the branching fraction of the leptonic decay ${D}_s^{+}$ → τ + ν τ via τ + → μ + ν μ $\overline{\nu}$ τ is measured to be ${\mathcal{B}}_{D_s^{+}\to {\tau}^{+}{\nu}_{\tau }}$ = (5 . 37 ± 0 . 17 stat ± 0 . 15 syst )%. Combining this branching fraction with the world averages of the measurements of the masses of τ + and ${D}_s^{+}$ as well as the lifetime of ${D}_s^{+}$, we extract the product of the decay constant of ${D}_s^{+}$ and the c → s Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element to be ${f}_{D_s^{+}}$ |V cs | = (246 . 7 ± 3 . 9 stat ± 3 . 6 syst ) MeV. Taking |V cs | from a global fit in the standard model we obtain ${f}_{D_s^{+}}$ = (253 . 4 ± 4 . 0 stat ± 3 . 7 syst ) MeV. Conversely, taking ${f}_{D_s^{+}}$ from lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations, we obtain |V cs | = 0 . 987 ± 0 . 016 stat ± 0 . 014 syst .

Gradient synthesis of carbon quantum dots and activated carbon from pulp black liquor for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and supercapacitor

Black liquor (BL) is a by-product of the chemical pulping industry and is mainly used as a low-value fuel; however, its potential to produce high-value products has not been fully exploited. In this study, a green and simple strategy is reported for the gradient production of Na + -functionalized carbon quantum dots (Na + -CQDs) for the first time, N and S co-doped CQDs (N/S-CQDs), and N and S co-doped KOH-activated carbon (N/S-KAC) from BL by dialysis, hydrothermal carbonization and activation-carbonization, respectively. Due to the good electron trapping ability, photoluminescence and promising up-conversion luminescence of CQDs, the hydrogen evolution efficiency of Na + -CQDs/TiO 2 and N/S-CQDs/TiO 2 photocatalysts was improved by 2.45 and 1.46 times, respectively, compared with pure TiO 2 . N/S-KAC with a high specific surface area of 2294 m 2 g -1 provides an excellent specific capacitance of 253 F g -1 at 0.5 A g -1 and a promising energy density of 26.92 Wh kg -1 under a power density of 566 W kg -1 for the fabricated symmetrical supercapacitor. Moreover, the electrode material has good cycling stability with a capacitance retention of ~ 93.91% after 5000 cycles. In conclusion, this pathway provides a versatile and scalable approach for the construction and co-production of nanostructured materials, photocatalysts and energy storage devices.

Improving anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge to renewable natural gas by the Advanced Pretreatment & Anaerobic Digestion technology (APAD): Pilot testing

Conventional anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge in wastewater treatment facilities suffers from low carbon conversion efficiency (CCE = 40%) and requires costly CO2 removal for injection of the produced CH4 into the natural gas grid. To address these limitations, we developed the Advanced Pretreatment and Anaerobic Digestion (APAD) process. This integrates Advanced Wet Oxidation & Steam Explosion (AWOEx) pretreatment of residual sludge after conventional AD, followed by biogas upgradation using a novel methanogenic strain, Methanothermobacter wolfeii BSEL, converting CO2 with H2 into CH4 or RNG (renewable natural gas). Pilot-scale results demonstrated that AWOEx pretreatment achieved a CCE of 62% for the residual sludge, 68% higher than the conventional AD process. The CH4 production was further increased by 79%. Subsequent biogas upgrading in a trickling bed reactor with H2 further enhanced total methane output by 100% and resulted in a final CO2 concentration of =3%. The integrated APAD process achieved a remarkable overall CCE of 83%, resulting in a 200% increase in RNG output when compared to conventional AD. Techno-economic analysis revealed that AWOEx pretreatment alone reduced sludge treatment costs from $494 to $253 per ton of dry solids. The complete APAD process incurred a higher cost of treatment of $530 per ton, driven by prices for bottled H2. The process did, however, show gains in energy recovery and decarbonization. Renewable H2, which may reduce in price in the near future, can positively improve the economics of biogas upgrading for the APAD process.

Capillary-Enhanced Two-Phase Micro-Cooler Using Copper-Inverse-Opal Wick with Silicon Microchannel Manifold for High-Heat-Flux Cooling Application

In this work, we demonstrate a two-phase capillary-fed boiling micro-cooler that consists of a ~ 25-..mu..m-thick copper inverse opal (CIO) porous wicking structure for high-heat-flux boiling and a silicon 3D-manifold for distributed liquid delivery and vapor extraction across a 0.5 cm x 0.5 cm heated area. At low inlet water mass flow rates of 1.5 to 1.9 g(min)-1, the micro-cooler displays nearly two-phase boiling with exit vapor quality ~ 1 and a high critical heat flux (CHF) of 253 to 320 W cm-2 with low superheat of ~ 10 degrees C resulting in a thermal resistance of boiling ~ 0.025 cm2 degrees C W-1 or heat transfer coefficient of 0.4 MW m-2 degrees C-1. For higher flow rates of 5, 10, and 15 g(min)-1, the micro-cooler exhibits a hybrid single-phase and two-phase cooling regime where the contribution of the sensible heat (single-phase) cooling is linearly added to that of the two-phase cooling. For the highest flow rate of 15 g(min)-1, the CHF is increased to ~ 500 W cm-2 resulting in an overall thermal resistance of ~ 0.18 cm2 degrees C W-1. However, the two-phase heat transfer effectiveness, which estimates the utilization level of the inlet mass flow rate for two-phase boiling, is reduced to ~ 0.11. To achieve the best cooling system performances, the micro-cooler must operate entirely within the two-phase boiling regime (exit vapor quality or two-phase heat transfer effectiveness ~ 1). Ideally, the "coolant" should be delivered near its saturation temperature (~ 100 degrees C for water), which provides significant advantages for the energy-efficient operation of data centers and power electronics. We present detailed analysis with Infrared and high speed camera images at various inlet flow rates and heat fluxes to understand complex heat transfer in the micro-cooler. Furthermore, a conjugate thermofluidic simulation model, which incorporates the physics of capillary-fed boiling in a porous copper layer, agrees well with the experimental data.

3D-printing methacrylate/chitin nanowhiskers composites via stereolithography: Mechanical and thermal properties

We report on the mechanical and thermal properties of stereolithography (SLA) 3D-printed methacrylate (MA) resin reinforced by chitin nanowhiskers (CNWs). CNWs were synthesized by acid hydrolysis of crab shell chitin and nanocomposites with 0 wt%, 0.5 wt%, 1.0 wt%, and 1.5 wt% CNWs loading were prepared by slurry compounding method. The obtained CNWs (diameter = 23 ± 5 nm, length = 253 ± 100 nm, and aspect ratio = 11 ± 3) are well dispersed within the bulk of MA at 1.0 wt% loading, implying good interfacial adhesion between the nanofiller and the resin matrix possibly due to hydrogen bonding interactions. The addition of up to 1.0 wt% CNWs to neat MA enhances the tensile strength, strain at break, modulus, and maximum thermal degradation temperatures of the nanocomposites. Moreover, the incorporation of CNWs not only improves the mechanical and thermal properties, but also preserves the excellent resolution and accuracy of 3D-printed MA/CNWs nanocomposites.

Metal Atom (Dis)Order and Superconductivity in YCaH n ( n = 8–20) High-Pressure Superhydrides

High-pressure superhydrides have attracted much attention due to their high superconducting critical temperatures (T c s). Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations, focusing on YCaH n (n = 8–20) compositions, found a number of nearly isoenthalpic YCaH 8 phases, differing only in the arrangement of the metal atoms, suggesting the potential stability of metal alloy superhydrides. The computed T c s of the considered YCaH 8 phases were higher than those of the isostructural I 4/ mmm MH 4 parent compounds. DFT enthalpies suggested that YCaH 12 could also be disordered; however, the T c s of the ordered variants spanned a wide range from 105 to 253 K at 200 GPa, showing that alloying could either mildly enhance or drastically reduce T c from that of the $Im\bar{3}m$ MH 6 parents. Finally, for YCaH 18 and YCaH 20 , only a single dynamically stable ordered superhydride was found, which we attribute to the differences in the structures of the most stable MH 9 and MH 10 binary hydride parents.

Vapor and Liquid ( p –ρ– T–x ) Measurements of Binary Refrigerant Blends Containing R-32, R-152a, R-227ea, R-1234yf, and R-1234ze(E)

In this article, The pressure–density–temperature–composition (p–ρ–T–x) data of binary refrigerant mixtures containing R-32 (difluoromethane), R-152a (1,1,-difluoroethane), R-227ea (1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane), R-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene), and R-1234ze(E) (trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) were measured in both the vapor and liquid phases using a two-sinker, magnetic suspension densimeter. The specific samples in this study comprised two compositions of approximately (0.3/0.7) and (0.7/0.3) mole fraction for each of the following four binary refrigerant blends: R-32 + R-1234yf, R-32 + R-1234ze(E), R-1234yf + R-152a, and R-1234ze(E) + R-227ea. Single-phase vapor densities were measured over a temperature range of approximately 253 to 293 K and pressures from 0.05 to 0.98 MPa. Single-phase liquid and supercritical densities were measured over a temperature range of approximately 230 to 400 K and pressures up to 22 MPa; for refrigerant blends containing R-1234yf, the maximum pressure was limited to 14 MPa. Overall relative combined, expanded (k = 2) uncertainties in density ranged from 0.025 to 0.191%, with an average uncertainty of approximately 0.05%. Here, we present measurement results, along with comparisons to available literature data and to default equations of state and mixture models included in REFPROP.

Landfalling Droughts: Global Tracking of Moisture Deficits From the Oceans Onto Land

Abstract Droughts threaten food, energy, and water security, causing death and displacement of millions of people and billions of dollars in damages. However, there are still important gaps in the understanding of drought mechanisms and behaviors, inhibiting the accuracy of early‐warning systems designed to protect communities worldwide. We use an object‐tracking algorithm to track clusters of precipitation‐minus‐evaporation moisture deficits across land and ocean areas of the globe from 1981–2018. This analysis reveals a new type of “landfalling drought” that originates over the ocean and “migrates” onto land. We find that 16% of droughts that affected the continents worldwide from 1981–2018 were landfalling droughts. These droughts were significantly larger (220–425%) and more intense (4–30%)—and grew (253–285%) and intensified (9–28%) faster—than droughts that developed solely over the land or ocean. To identify potential underlying mechanisms, we analyze moisture transport associated with landfalling droughts over western North America. We find that landfalling droughts in this region are associated with anomalously anticyclonic atmospheric pressure patterns that reduce moisture fluxes over the Pacific Ocean toward the continent. By advancing understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution of droughts, our findings offer the potential to improve seasonal‐scale prediction and long‐term projection of global drought risks.

Electrochemically in situ formed rocksalt phase in titanium dioxide determines pseudocapacitive sodium-ion storage

Earth-abundant TiO 2 is a promising negative electrode for low-cost sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to its high capacity, rapid (dis)charging capability, safe operation potential and nonflammability. Crystalline anatase TiO 2 is not suitable for reversible Na + (de)intercalation, but it displays pseudocapacitive response after repeated cycles. Herein, we find and demonstrate that ordered rocksalt (RS) NaTiO 2 nanograins are in situ formed by electrochemically cycling with Na + ions in anatase and amorphous TiO 2 . The in situ formed RS-NaTiO 2 follows a solid-solution reaction with small volume changes of only 2.0%, that determines the pseudocapacitive “mirror-like” cyclic voltammetry curve with a couple of broad redox peaks at 0.75 V vs. Na + /Na, a high capacity of 253 mAh g −1 , high-rate capability and thousands of stable cycles. The multistep crystalline-to-amorphous-to-RS transformations are able to be electrochemically activated during the aging process of assembled full cells. Our finding provides a direction for developing unconventional Ti-based high-performance active materials for SIBs with both high energy and power densities.

A high resolution, gridded product for vapor pressure deficit using Daymet

Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) is a critical variable in assessing drought conditions and evaluating plant water stress. Gridded products of global and regional VPD are not freely available from satellite remote sensing, model reanalysis, or ground observation datasets. We present two versions of the first gridded VPD product for the Continental US and parts of Northern Mexico and Southern Canada (CONUS+) at a 1 km spatial resolution and daily time step. We derived VPD from Daymet maximum daily temperature and average daily vapor pressure and scale the estimates based on (1) climate determined by the Köppen-Geiger classifications and (2) land cover determined by the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme. Ground-based VPD data from 253 AmeriFlux sites representing different climate and land cover classifications were used to improve the Daymet-derived VPD estimates for every pixel in the CONUS+ grid to produce the final datasets. We evaluated the Daymet-derived VPD against independent observations and reanalysis data. The CONUS+ VPD datasets will aid in investigating disturbances including drought and wildfire, and informing land management strategies.

Near-cryogenic direct air capture using adsorbents

Direct air capture (DAC) of CO 2 is a key component in the portfolio of negative emissions technologies for mitigating global warming. However, even with the most potent amine sorbents, large-scale DAC deployment remains limited by high energy and capital costs. Recently, adsorbents relying on weak interactions with CO 2 have emerged as a potential alternative, thanks to their rapid adsorption kinetics and superior long-term stability, particularly under sub-ambient conditions (∼253 K). Despite these advantages, their use is hindered by the need for a water-removal process, location-specific constraints, and insufficient working capacity even in cold climates. In this study, we hypothesized that further reducing the adsorption temperature to a near-cryogenic range (160–220 K) could enable cost-effective DAC by utilizing the full potential of physisorbents. We primarily consider integrating DAC with a relatively untapped source of cold energy—liquified natural gas (LNG) regasification—to perform near-cryogenic DAC. From large-scale molecular simulations, Zeolite 13X and CALF-20 were identified as promising candidates. These materials were subsequently examined through experiments, including breakthrough analyses at 195 K. Their high CO 2 sorption capacity (4.5–5.5 mmol g −1 ), combined with a low desorption enthalpy and robust long-term stability, led to a threefold reduction in the levelized cost of capture (down to 68.2 USD per tonne CO 2 ). Estimates of the global LNG regasification resource suggest that LNG–DAC coupling could potentially enable the capture of 103–142 megatonnes of CO 2 annually as of 2050.

GRB 180128A: A second magnetar giant flare candidate from the Sculptor Galaxy

Magnetars are slowly rotating neutron stars that possess the strongest magnetic fields known in the cosmos (10 14 − 10 15 G). They display a range of transient high-energy electromagnetic activity. The brightest and most energetic of these events are the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) known as magnetar giant flares (MGFs), with isotropic energies E iso ≈ 10 44 − 10 46 erg. Only seven MGF detections have been made to date: three unambiguous events occurred in our Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, and the other four MGF candidates are associated with nearby star-forming galaxies. As all seven identified MGFs are bright at Earth, additional weaker events likely remain unidentified in archival data. We conducted a search of the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor database for candidate extragalactic MGFs and, when possible, collected localization data from the Interplanetary Network (IPN) satellites. Our search yielded one convincing event, GRB 180128A. IPN localizes this burst within NGC 253, commonly known as the Sculptor Galaxy. The event is the second MGF in modern astronomy to be associated with this galaxy and the first time two bursts have been associated with a single galaxy outside our own. Here we detail the archival search criteria that uncovered this event and its spectral and temporal properties, which are consistent with expectations for a MGF. We also discuss the theoretical implications and finer burst structures resolved from various binning methods. Our analysis provides observational evidence of an eighth identified MGF.

Measurement of the Lifetime and Λ Separation Energy of H Λ 3

The most precise measurements to date of the $^{3}_{Λ}$H lifetime τ and Λ separation energy B Λ are obtained using the data sample of Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The $^{3}_{Λ}$H is reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel ($^{3}_{Λ}$H → 3 He + π – and the charge-conjugate process). The measured values τ = [253 ± 11 (stat.) ± 6(syst.)] ps and B Λ = [102 ± 63 (stat.) ± 67 (syst.)] keV are compatible with predictions from effective field theories and confirm that the $^{3}_{Λ}$H structure is consistent with a weakly-bound system.
