Surrogate modeling of the leaching process in a rare earth elements recovery plant

The data are summarized in the slides for a poster as presented at the 2024 AIChE annual meeting in San Diego, California, USA. The slides summarize our work on the PrOMMiS project over the past year. The slides describe the systematic design and optimization of a flowsheet for the recovery of critical minerals and rare earth elements. Then, it summarizes the results of our benchmarking of surrogate modeling methodologies for the optimization of these flowsheets.

RAPID Manufacturing Institute Final Report

The Rapid Advancement of Process Intensification Deployment (RAPID) Manufacturing Institute, founded in 2017, is a public/private partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). RAPID promotes the development, deployment and commercialization of Process Intensification (PI) and Modular Chemical Process Intensification (MCPI) technologies, enabling U.S. manufacturing to reduce energy consumption, improve process efficiencies and lower investment and operating costs. This mission was carried out through parallel work breakdown structure elements including the establishment of committees to guide the operations and technical direction of RAPID, the establishment of management practices and institute processes, education and workforce development (EWD), and six technical focus areas for the development of technologies to advance PI and MCPI. Throughout the initial six-year cooperative agreement, RAPID worked to meet performance metrics which focused on the operation and sustainment of the institute, education and workforce development and the development of PI and MCPI for the advancement of U.S. manufacturing. All these metrics were successfully met through a total of 43 projects which leveraged $\$$70M Federal with $\$$90M cost share. As a result of these efforts, 84 private and public organizations were brought together by RAPID as members to co-invest in R&D, commercialization and deployment of innovative technologies. In the research portfolio, 82% of the 38 projects achieved > 20% energy efficiency improvement. A RAPID Test Network was developed with 51 testbed facilities to enable access to resources, facilities, tools, and expertise. Eight EWD programs were also developed with over 13,000 impressions. RAPID’s efforts to research, develop, demonstrate, and deploy high-impact PI and modular process technology solutions have enabled reduced energy use, increased sustainability, and improved profitability for U.S. manufacturing.

On the Feasibility of Geophysical Methods for CO 2 Monitoring in the North Dakota CarbonSAFE Project

Conference presentation at American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting, Phoenix, AZ, November 13–18, 2022. An analysis of rock physics crossplots and diagnostic models suggests that the baseline seismic data may be sensitive to changes in lithology and porosity of the Broom Creek Formation and that these changes may be detectable by prestack seismic inversion.

North Dakota CarbonSAFE - A Success Story

Conference presentation at American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting, Phoenix, AZ, November 13–18, 2022. The EERC and the project team leveraged North Dakota’s Class VI primacy status to prepare and submit successful applications for two storage facility permits and associated monitoring and UIC Class VI injection wells. The applications and their supporting documents were prepared in accordance with the North Dakota Century Code and the North Dakota Administrative Code and show the effectiveness of working with a state that has been granted Class VI primacy.

CarbonSAFE North Dakota – Early Successes

Conference presentation for American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting, Boston, MA and virtual, November 5–11 and 15–19, 2021. As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) CarbonSAFE program, the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) is conducting commercial-scale site characterization and permitting of up to two geologic horizons for the geologic storage of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. These storage horizons would collectively and permanently store nearly 4 million metric tons (MMt) of CO2 per year captured as part of Minnkota Power Cooperative’s (Minnkota’s) Project Tundra. Minnkota’s ambitious initiative to build the world’s largest postcombustion carbon capture and storage facility in central North Dakota demonstrates the existence of a business case for carbon capture, and storage (CCS).

Carbon Ore-Derived Critical Materials for Clean Energy Technologies

Conference presentation at American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting, San Diego, California, October 27–31, 2024. Trends in the manufacture of electric vehicles that use graphite-based LIBs are rising steeply in the United States and globally, but the U.S. domestic supply chains for graphite, the largest component in an LIB by mass, is severely limited and faces complicated geopolitical dynamics with foreign sources. Consequently, the United States has designated graphite as a critical mineral to focus attention and resources to develop technologies to meet the challenge of limited domestic graphite supply chains. Results obtained so far based on the UCOP process have successfully validated the technology at the laboratory scale, with the produced graphite material showing up to 95% degree of graphitization, high carbon purity of ~99.98%, residual ash content of ≤0.02%, negligible moisture, low trace elements, and high electrochemical stability. These results suggest that the emerging UCOP technology is a promising approach to effectively synthesize high-quality graphite from abundant coal and coal waste resources in the United States to create a sustainable domestic critical graphite supply chain. A brief description of the status of UCOP process development and representative results will be presented.

Novel Carbon Storage Monitoring Methods

Conference presentation at American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting, San Diego, California, October 27–31, 2024. We presented a high-level overview of many novel and sustainable carbon storage monitoring methods that are at various stages of planning or demonstration to accelerate the deployment of CCS technologies at future CCS sites across the United States. Our work impacts the general CCS industry by providing novel and more sustainable methods for tracking CO 2 plume migration and performing assurance monitoring. Our work primarily benefits three parties: 1) CCS community members through knowledge sharing of lessons learned; 2) CCS operators through commercialization of additional methods, including improvements on workflows and simplification of fieldwork; and 3) stakeholders of CCS projects through implementation of low-impact and more autonomous monitoring solutions.

CO 2 Injection Monitoring with a Scalable, Automated Sparse Seismic Array

Conference presentation at American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting, Virtual, November 16–20, 2020. The scalable, automated sparse seismic array (SASSA) method has been ideated as a cost-effective alternative or complementary to conventional 3D seismic methods. Based on a sparse array of receivers deployed strategically on Earth’s surface and one or more fixed seismic sources, the SASSA method can be used to study specific portions of the subsurface to detect the movement of CO 2 in a reservoir with lower environmental footprint and shorter turnaround time to deliver results than conventional 3D seismic methods. Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) carried out seismic monitoring of an oilfield undergoing CO 2 enhanced oil recovery in Montana, USA, using the SASSA method.
