AMD Radeon e9173 Low Power PCIE GPU Single Event Effects Test Report

The AMD Radeon Embedded e9170 Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), notably the e9173 Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIE) variant, is of interest to Artemis generation programs with requirements for graphics rendering, compute, artificial intelligence (Ai) with a constraints-requiring piece-part procurement and power consumption of less than 50W. In addition to collecting heavy ion data on this device, a secondary purpose of this test campaign was to validate video capture hardware and software workflows used with GPU, microprocessor and system-on-chip device testing. Five (5) test patterns from the NEPP Processor Enclave (NPE) test suite were used with the e9173. The test patterns covered the operating system’s (OS) idle contribution towards the cross section, matrix math using tensorflow-rocm, two artificial intelligence models developed at NASA GSFC, and an industry standard GPU benchmarking application called Mesa GLXGears.

ML-AMD/exa-pd

Exa-pd is a highly parallelizable workflow for constructing multi-element phase diagrams (PDs). It uses standard sampling techniques—molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC)—as implemented in the LAMMPS package, to simultaneously sample multiple phases on a fine temperature–composition mesh for free-energy calculations. The workflow uses Parsl as a global controller to manage the MD/MC jobs to achieve massive parallelization with almost ideal scalability. The resulting free energies of both liquid and solid phases (including solid solutions) are then fed to CALPHAD modeling using the PYCALPHAD package for the construction of a multi-element PD.

Manned space flight nuclear system safety. Volume 3: Reactor system preliminary nuclear safety analysis. Part 2: Accident Model Document (AMD)

The Accident Model Document is one of three documents of the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) - Reactor System as applied to a Space Base Program. Potential terrestrial nuclear hazards involving the zirconium hydride reactor-Brayton power module are identified for all phases of the Space Base program. The accidents/events that give rise to the hazards are defined and abort sequence trees are developed to determine the sequence of events leading to the hazard and the associated probabilities of occurence. Source terms are calculated to determine the magnitude of the hazards. The above data is used in the mission accident analysis to determine the most probable and significant accidents/events in each mission phase. The only significant hazards during the prelaunch and launch ascent phases of the mission are those which arise form criticality accidents. Fission product inventories during this time period were found to be very low due to very limited low power acceptance testing.

Wind-tunnel investigation of aerodynamic performance, steady amd vibratory loads, surface temperatures, and acoustic characteristics of a large-scale twin-engine upper-surface blown jet-flap configuration

Static and wind-on tests were conducted to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of and the effects of jet impingement on the wing of a large scale upper surface blown configuration powered with an actual turbine engine. The wing and flaps were instrumented with experimental dual-sensing transducer units consisting of a fluctuating pressure gage, a vibratory accelerometer, and a surface mounted alumel thermocouple. Noise directivity and spectral content measurements were obtained for various flap configurations and various engine thrust settings to provide baseline noise data for other upper surface blown configurations.

Continuing investigation of sweeping Jovian resonances - The 7:3 amd 3:2 resonances with further discussion of the 2:1 resonance

The formation of the solar system from an accretion disk around the protosun can have a significant impact on the celestial mechanics of the early solar system. The solids in the disk settled to the midplane and formed a planetesimal swarm while an early-formed Jupiter was present. The gravity of the disk makes the radial force law become non-Keplerian, causing the commensurability resonances of the early-formed Jupiter to be displaced from where they would otherwise be. An analysis similar to that previously applied to the 2:1, 3:1 and 5:2 resonances is presently undertaken for the 7:3 and 3:2 resonances, and a Kirkwood-like gap is obtained for a sweeping 7:3 resonance. An accumulation of objects is obtained near the 3:2 resonance which, with the ejection of objects on either side of the resonance, would resemble the Hilda group of asteroids. Agreement between the exact commensurability location and the gap center is discussed for the 2:1 resonance.

Assessment of a career development program for executive amd mid-level managers

This project sought to validate the competencies required of mid-level and executive managers at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), in order to enable an assessment of the Resident Management Education Program (RMEP). Forty (40) statements describing management competencies were presented to a sample of 37 KSC managers, who judged each as essential, useful but not essential, or not needed at each of two management levels. A content validity ratio (CVR) was calculated for each competency statement at the two management levels. There was general agreement on the validity of 36 or the 40 competency statements. Based on the content validity ratios and comments from respondents, recommendations for improvement of the RMEP were made.

Targeted Rare Earth Element Extraction from Mine Drainage Treatment Solids Informed by Advanced Characterization

In support of a clean energy transition in the U.S., National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has collaborated with staff at Hedin Environmental and students at the University of Pittsburgh to characterize critical mineral content and recovery potential from acid mine drainage treatment solids (AMD solids). AMD solids in Appalachia are an unconventional feedstock of rare earth elements (REEs), with potential of suppling 1,102 tons REE/year. To inform recovery efforts, select AMD solids were examined using synchrotron microprobe analysis in conjunction with USGS-developed geochemical modeling to indicate likely phases hosting critical minerals (REE, Co, Ni, etc.) and associated metals . More than 100 AMD solids were collected from 94 passive AMD treatment systems in Pennsylvania, where limestone aggregates are used for acidity neutralization. As pH increases, dissolved metals and critical minerals in AMD are attenuated as surface coatings on limestone. The collected AMD solids contained up to 2000 mg/kg REE, up to 13,000 mg/kg transition metals (Co, Ni, Zn) and up to 440 mg/kg Li. Regardless of the diverse chemical compositions from AMD solids (Al-rich, Mn-rich, or Al,Fe,Mn-rich), REEs were mostly associated with Al and Mn (hydr)oxides, while select heavy REEs (e.g., Gd, Dy) were co-localized with Fe (hydr)oxides. Co and Ni have different distribution zones, while both co-localized with Mn (hydr)oxides. Based on this characterization, NETL developed a patent-pending innovative step-leaching protocol, “Targeted Rare Earth Extraction (TREE)” to effectively recover up to 90% REE and 60% Co in separate steps. In addition, select post-TREE solid residuals (purified Al oxides, or Mn oxides) can be further developed into functional materials (e.g., lithium and CO2 sorbents) needed for green energy transition and carbon management. This characterization-informed approach as well as TREE processing from AMD solids can be used for other legacy wastes (e.g., coal ash, oil and gas drill cutting, mine tailings), and offers an opportunity to transform waste streams into environmental and economic assets that meet U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency goals.

Mechanisms of alpha 1-adrenergic vascular desensitization in conscious dogs

To investigate the mechanisms of alpha 1-adrenergic vascular desensitization, osmotic minipumps containing either saline (n = 9) or amidephrine mesylate (AMD) (n = 9), a selective alpha 1-adrenergic receptor agonist, were implanted subcutaneously in dogs with chronically implanted arterial and right atrial pressure catheters and aortic flow probes. After chronic alpha 1-adrenergic receptor stimulation, significant physiological desensitization to acute AMD challenges was observed, i.e., pressor and vasoconstrictor responses to the alpha 1-adrenergic agonist were significantly depressed (p < 0.01) compared with responses in the same dogs studied in the conscious state before pump implantation. However, physiological desensitization to acute challenges of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (NE) (0.1 micrograms/kg per minute) in the presence of beta-adrenergic receptor blockade was not observed for either mean arterial pressure (MAP) (30 +/- 7 versus 28 +/- 5 mm Hg) or total peripheral resistance (TPR) (29.8 +/- 4.9 versus 28.9 +/- 7.3 mm Hg/l per minute). In the presence of beta-adrenergic receptor plus ganglionic blockade after AMD pump implantation, physiological desensitization to NE was unmasked since the control responses to NE (0.1 micrograms/kg per minute) before the AMD pumps were now greater (p < 0.01) than after chronic AMD administration for both MAP (66 +/- 5 versus 32 +/- 2 mm Hg) and TPR (42.6 +/- 10.3 versus 23.9 +/- 4.4 mm Hg/l per minute). In the presence of beta-adrenergic receptor, ganglionic, plus NE-uptake blockade after AMD pump implantation, desensitization was even more apparent, since NE (0.1 micrograms/kg per minute) induced even greater differences in MAP (33 +/- 5 versus 109 +/- 6 mm Hg) and TPR (28.1 +/- 1.8 versus 111.8 +/- 14.7 mm Hg/l per minute). The maximal force of contraction induced by NE in the presence or absence of endothelium was significantly decreased (p < 0.05) in vitro in mesenteric artery rings from AMD pump dogs compared with saline control dogs. Furthermore, alpha 1-adrenergic receptor density, as determined by [3H]prazosin binding in membrane preparations from vessels in the mesentery, was decreased (8.2 +/- 1.0 versus 18.4 +/- 1.4 fmol/mg protein, p < 0.001) without any change in Kd in the AMD pump dogs compared with the saline pump dogs.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS).

Optimizing Screening for Preventable Blindness With Head-Mounted Visual Assessment Technology

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness and is diagnosed as early-stage or late-stage. Early-stage AMD is usually asymptomatic and entails pigmentary changes of the retina (Ayoub & Patel, 2009). As the disorder progresses, there are atrophic or neovascular changes that distort vision, especially the central visual field (Ayoub & Patel, 2009). There are several genetic and non-genetic risk factors for AMD and no proven therapy to slow or reverse late-stage atrophic AMD, while anti-VEGF has effectively treated late-stage neovascular AMD. Several genes of interest have also been investigated thoroughly thus far in their connection to AMD and the CFH and ARMS2 genes have shown promise in understanding the genetic basis of the disorder (Awh et al., 2013). There are other epigenetic and environmental factors as well including smoking and low antioxidant levels (Cano et al., 2010). Ongoing investigations include antioxidant supplementation and a smoking cessation regimen to reverse early-stage AMD (Cano et al., 2010). Progress in treating AMD as a disorder across its varied stages requires newer therapeutics along with a more detailed understanding of the genetic and cellular pathways of pathophysiology is needed to better counter this prevalent disorder of the eye.

Bacterial Biomining Rare Earth Elements in Abandoned Coal Mine Drainage: Solubilization and Sequestration

Bacteria can be used to biomine rare earth elements (REEs) domestically from abandoned coal-mine drainage (AMD) solids. Pennsylvania has ~11,000 abandoned mines, with ~500 AMD passive remediation systems that precipitate AMD REE rich solids onsite. In passive systems, REEs, co-precipitate with manganese (Mn), accumulating as solids that can produce a valuable leachate when resolubilized. REEs like lanthanum (La) are used in battery technology. Microbial metabolic changes that co-resolubilize Mn and REEs could result in an affordable release process that does not require chemical additives and the select sequestering of REEs like La allow for the selective purification from a mixed REE composition. Currently, the microbial mechanisms that contribute to mass REE resolubilization and selective sequestration are poorly understood. We have isolated bacteria (Bacillus mycoides JR07 and Bacillus pseudomycoides KB7) that solubilize Mn oxide, La oxide, and AMD solids by acidogenesis. We have determined that isolates JR07 and KB7 solubilize the La from AMD PRS solids by their production of organic acids. Preliminary results show methylotrophic bacterial isolate B3 can take up soluble La(III), giving an avenue to purification of La from a rich REE leachate. Determining the microbial metabolism and genes involved in the mass resolubilization of REEs and selective biomining of La(III) is crucial to optimize the biomining of AMD solids. Our work addresses the growing need to develop novel REE recovery methods from domestic sources.
