Enhancing Application Performance Using Mini-Apps: Comparison of Hybrid Parallel Programming Paradigms

In this work, several mini-apps have been created to enhance a real-world application performance, namely the VULCAN code for complex flow analysis developed at the NASA Langley Research Center. These mini-apps explore hybrid parallel programming paradigms with Message Passing Interface (MPI) for distributed memory access and either Shared MPI (SMPI) or OpenMP for shared memory accesses. Performance testing shows that MPI+SMPI yields the best execution performance, while requiring the largest number of code changes. A maximum speedup of 23X was measured for MPI+SMPI, but only 10X was measured for MPI+OpenMP.

Viscosity Measurements of the HLW APPS Glasses

The U.S. Department of Energy is responsible for building the Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) at the Hanford site in Washington to remediate 56 million gallons of radioactive waste historically stored in 177 underground tanks. The Office of River Protection has requested that the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) contribute in areas of recognized capabilities and expertise for glass waste form development to support successful startup of the WTP. SRNL support of this work is defined in the Task Technical and Quality Assurance Plan.1 This report provides results from viscosity measurements on a series of simulated nuclear waste glasses designed and fabricated at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). The glasses were designated the high-level waste – Aspen Process Performance Simulation (HLW-APPS) study glasses. The data provided in this report is to be used in the development, validation, and implementation of enhanced property/composition models for nuclear waste glasses.

Sensitivity Analysis for the Component Design App: Analysis of Success Assured Data

A new tool has been developed to perform variance-based global sensitivity analysis (VBGSA) on data from a set-based concurrent engineering software called Success Assured (SA). The tool is part of a digital component design app, which is currently in production as an Accelerated Digital Engineering Pathfinder at Sandia National Laboratories. When working with complex digital models, it is important to understand relationships between inputs and outputs, i.e., how “sensitive” model outputs are to changes in model inputs. After extensive research and trials of various sensitivity analysis methods, it was determined that estimation of Sobol’ indices for VBGSA with Monte Carlo simulation, paired with simple surrogate models, produces the best results for SA data. This tool increases understanding of SA models and streamlines the creation of SA datasets. This report details the methodology and implementation of this sensitivity analysis tool so others can understand it and implement it.

Lithium-Ion Battery Design for Grid-Scale Energy Storage App

A software that delivers parameters from energy storage system (ESS) to container, rack, module and single cell design, as well as data analysis on arbitrage energy and frequency regulation of ESS in different regions, has been developed. The Lithium-ion Battery Design for Grid-scale Energy Storage App V1.0 has the capability to output the system, module and cell design with the energy, power, capacity, group method, cost of single cell, and single cell test protocol which break down from input energy storage system data in different regions. The default chemistry of the battery is LiFePO4 and graphite. The energy density of the graphite/LiFePO 4 pouch cell ranges from 100 Wh/kg to 200 Wh/Kg in the software. Graphite/LiFePO 4 pouch cell (up to 1Ah in lab) manufacturing line is also built and can be used to evaluate the test protocol, moreover, for electrolyte evaluation in other ESMI seedling projects. The software enables rapid prototyping to accelerate energy storage research, development, and manufacturing.

Aerosol physical properties in the stratosphere (APPS) radiometer design

The measurement concepts and radiometer design developed to obtain earth-limb spectral radiance measurements for the Aerosol Physical Properties in the Stratosphere (APPS) measurement program are presented. The measurements made by a radiometer of this design can be inverted to yield vertical profiles of Rayleigh scatterers, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, aerosol extinction, and aerosol physical properties, including a Junge size-distribution parameter, and a real and imaginary index of refraction. The radiometer design provides the capacity for remote sensing of stratospheric constituents from space on platforms such as the space shuttle and satellites, and therefore provides for global measurements on a daily basis.

Audio App Brings a Better Nights Sleep

Neuroscientist Seth Horowitz was part of a NASA-funded team at State University of New York Stony Brook demonstrating that low-amplitude vestibular stimulation could induce sleep. After recognizing the same stimulation could be applied through sound, Horowitz founded Sleep Genius, located in Park City, Utah, and released a mobile app of the same name that helps people to get a more restful sleep.

PVT+AUDIO. Online Psychoacoustic Testing iOS App for Evaluating AAM/UAM Noise Resonse

PVT+AUDIO is an extension of the existing Psychomoter Vigilance Task application that NASA released over 2 years ago for evaluating pilot fatigue. PVT+AUDIO is designed to present audio stimuli using a method of limits to determine the relationship between objective acoustic parameters and psychacoustic response, for application to Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). Responses include annoyance, acceptance, blend with ambient sound, and detection. The app runs within Apple's iOS ecosystem and utilizes binaural audio simulations of vehicles and ambient sound, and is designed to compensate for headphone response. A prototype experiment is described, along with issues related to calibration and subject engagement.

If We Build Them, They Will Run: Automated HPC Apps Deployment and Profiling with eBPF in Cloud

The high performance computing (HPC) community is in a period of transition. The rise of AI/ML coupled with a changing landscape of resources deems portability a new metric of performance, and methods to move between on-premises and cloud environments and assess compatibility are paramount. Here we design and test a strategy for bridging the gap between traditional HPC and Kubernetes environments – first containerizing applications, providing automated orchestration to run studies, and packaging the setup with automated means to assess performance using low overhead eXtended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) programs. We first assess different designs for eBPF collection, demonstrating a tradeoff between number of programs deployed on a node and overhead added. We develop 5 low overhead eBPF programs that combine with streaming ML models to assess CPU, futex, TCP, shared memory, and file access across four different builds of an HPC application for CPU and GPU. We use eBPF data to generate insights into the possible underlying etiology of scaling issues. We then assess compatibility of a well-known benchmark, HPCG, across matrices of micro-architectures and optimization levels (217 containers across 24 instance types and over 7500 runs). We provide to the community 30 applications to deploy in our automated setup and perform a scaling study from 4 to a maximum of 256 nodes for both CPU and GPU applications. Finally, we use our gained knowledge about performance to generate compatibility artifacts that are used by a newly developed Kubernetes controller to intelligently select instance type based on optimizing a figure of merit. Along with insights to scaling in this environment with a collection of applications and templates to work from, we provide an overall strategy for approaching HPC application deployment and image selection based on compatibility in cloud.

useeio-infra-app

This GitHub repository hosts the source code to an RShiny web application that implements the U.S. Environmentally-Extended Input-Output (USEEIO) model in order to conduct a screening-level life cycle analysis. The USEEIO model is an open-source model developed and maintained by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), along with colleagues and contractors, and is available on GitHub (https://github.com/USEPA/USEEIO). The USEEIO model incorporates environmental data into pre-existing Economic Input-Output Models, which look at the interdependence of different economic industries. In this web application, the focus is on energy infrastructure applications; however, it can be used to implement USEEIO in any area for which this model is applicable.

Spacecraft 3D Augmented Reality Mobile App

The Spacecraft 3D application allows users to learn about and interact with iconic NASA missions in a new and immersive way using common mobile devices. Using Augmented Reality (AR) techniques to project 3D renditions of the mission spacecraft into real-world surroundings, users can interact with and learn about Curiosity, GRAIL, Cassini, and Voyager. Additional updates on future missions, animations, and information will be ongoing. Using a printed AR Target and camera on a mobile device, users can get up close with these robotic explorers, see how some move, and learn about these engineering feats, which are used to expand knowledge and understanding about space. The software receives input from the mobile device's camera to recognize the presence of an AR marker in the camera's field of view. It then displays a 3D rendition of the selected spacecraft in the user's physical surroundings, on the mobile device's screen, while it tracks the device's movement in relation to the physical position of the spacecraft's 3D image on the AR marker.
