Resonance three-wave interactions and strange attractor

We report it is shown that the incorporation of linear sink/source terms in the three-wave resonance interaction model results in the time dependence of the wave amplitudes, which could exhibit the properties of a strange attractor. This finding demonstrates that the transition to turbulent dynamics of the waves could be related not only to the coupling of wave triads but also to the establishing of the strange attractor-like dynamics within individual wave triads.

An Unipolar Terminal-Attractor Based Neural Associative Memory with Adaptive Threshold and Perfect Convergence

For the first time, a unipolar terminal-attractor based neural associative memory (TABAM)system with adaptive threshold and perfect convergence is presented. By adaptively setting thethreshold values for the dynamic iteration for the unipolar binary neuron states with terminal-attractors and inner-product approach, we demonstrate via computer simulation the achievement ofperfect convergence and correct retrieval. The simulation is completed with a small number of storedstates (M) and a small number of neurons (N) but a large M/N ratio. An experiment with exclusive-or logic operation using LCTV SLMs is used to show feasibility of the optoelectronic implementationof the models.

DNA Reaction–Diffusion Attractor Patterns

Abstract Living systems can form and recover complex chemical patterns with precisely sized features in the ranges of tens or hundreds of microns. We show how designed reaction–diffusion processes can likewise produce precise patterns, termed attractor patterns, that reform their precise shape after being perturbed. We use oligonucleotide reaction networks, photolithography, and microfluidic delivery to form precisely controlled attractor patterns and study the responses of these patterns to different localized perturbations. Linear and “hill”‐shaped patterns formed and stabilized into shapes and at time scales consistent with reaction–diffusion models. When patterns were perturbed in particular locations with UV light, they reliably reformed their steady‐state profiles. Recovery also occurred after repeated perturbations. By designing the far‐from‐equilibrium dynamics of a chemical system, this study shows how it is possible to design spatial patterns of molecules that are sustained and regenerated by continually evolving towards a specific steady state configuration.

α-attractor dark energy in view of next-generation cosmological surveys

The α-attractor inflationary models are nowadays favored by CMB Planck observations. Their similarity with canonical quintessence models motivates the exploration of a common framework that explains both inflation and dark energy. Here, we study the expected constraints that next-generation cosmological experiments will be able to impose for the dark energy α-attractor model. We systematically account for the constraining power of SNIa from WFIRST, BAO from DESI and WFIRST, galaxy clustering and shear from LSST and Stage-4 CMB experiments. We assume a tensor-to-scalar ratio, 10 -3 < r < 10 -2 , which permits to explore the wide regime sufficiently close, but distinct, to a cosmological constant, without need of fine tunning the initial value of the field. We find that the combination S4CMB + LSST + SNIa will achieve the best results, improving the FoM by almost an order of magnitude; respect to the S4CMB + BAO + SNIa case. We find this is also true for the FoM of the w 0 -w a parameters. Therefore, future surveys will be uniquely able to probe models connecting early and late cosmic acceleration.

Phenomenology and cosmology of no-scale attractor models of inflation

We have recently proposed attractor models for modulus fixing, inflation, supersymmetry breaking and dark energy based on no-scale supergravity. In this paper we develop phenomenological and cosmological aspects of these no-scale attractor models that underpin their physical applications. We consider models in which inflation is driven by a modulus field (T-type) with supersymmetry broken by a Polonyi field, or a matter field (φ-type) with supersymmetry broken by the modulus field. We derive the possible patterns of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms, which depend in T-type models whether the Polonyi and/or matter fields are twisted or not, and in φ-type models on whether the inflaton and/or other matter fields are twisted or not. In φ-type models, we are able to directly relate the scale of supersymmetry breaking to the inflaton mass. We also discuss cosmological constraints from entropy considerations and the density of dark matter on the mechanism for stabilizing the modulus field via higher-order terms in the no-scale K¨ahler potential.

Upper semicontinuous global attractors for viscous flow

A particular form of regularization of the Navier-Stokes equations is studied. It is shown that as the regularization parameter goes to zero, the global attractor for the regularized system converges to the global attractor for the conventional Navier-Stokes system.

A chaotic attractor in timing noise from the Vela pulsar?

Fourteen years of timing residual data from the Vela pulsar have been analyzed in order to determine if a chaotic dynamical process is the origin of timing noise. Using the correlation sum technique, a dimension of about 1.5 is obtained. This low dimension indicates underlying structure in the phase residuals which may be evidence for a chaotic attractor. It is therefore possible that nonlinear dynamics intrinsic to the spin-down may be the cause of the timing noise in the Vela pulsar. However, it has been found that the stimulated random walks in frequency and frequency derivative often used to model pulsar timing noise also have low fractal dimension, using the same analysis technique. Recent work suggesting that random processes with steep power spectra can mimic strange attractors seems to be confirmed in the case of these random walks. It appears that the correlation sum estimator for dimension is unable to distinguish between chaotic and random processes.

Connecting coherent structures and strange attractors

A concept of turbulence derived from nonlinear dynamical systems theory suggests that turbulent solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations are restricted to strange attractors, and, by implication, that turbulent phenomenology must find some expression or source in the structure of these mathematical objects. Examples and discussions are presented to link coherent structures to some of the commonly known characteristics of strange attractors. Basic to this link is a geometric interpretation of conditional sampling techniques employed to educe coherent structures that offers an explanation for their appearance in measurements as well as their size.

Unipolar terminal-attractor based neural associative memory with adaptive threshold

A unipolar terminal-attractor based neural associative memory (TABAM) system with adaptive threshold for perfect convergence is presented. By adaptively setting the threshold values for the dynamic iteration for the unipolar binary neuron states with terminal-attractors for the purpose of reducing the spurious states in a Hopfield neural network for associative memory and using the inner product approach, perfect convergence and correct retrieval is achieved. Simulation is completed with a small number of stored states (M) and a small number of neurons (N) but a large M/N ratio. An experiment with optical exclusive-OR logic operation using LCTV SLMs shows the feasibility of optoelectronic implementation of the models. A complete inner-product TABAM is implemented using a PC for calculation of adaptive threshold values to achieve a unipolar TABAM (UIT) in the case where there is no crosstalk, and a crosstalk model (CRIT) in the case where crosstalk corrupts the desired state.

Stochastic Representation of Chaos using Terminal Attractors

A nonlinear version of the Liouville equation based upon terminal attractors is proposed for describing post-instability motions of dynamical systems with exponential divergence of trajectories such as those leading to chaos and turbulence. As a result, the post-instability motions are represented by expectations, variances, and higher moments of the state variables as functions of time. The proposed approach can be applied to conservative chaos, and in particular, to n-bodies problem, as well as to dissipative systems, and in particular, to chaotic attractors and turbulence.

Double-copy towards supergravity inflation with α-attractor models

A bstract Key to the simplicity of supergravity α -attractor models of inflation are Volkov-Akulov fermions, often in the form of nilpotent superfields. Here we explore the possibility of using the double-copy to construct theories of Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov (DBIVA) coupled to supergravity. A color-dual bootstrap admits scattering amplitudes involving pions and vectors through five-point tree-level order by order in mass-dimension, but requires the introduction of a Tr( F 3 ) operator. Gauge theories with this operator were recently found to require a tower of higher-derivative operators to be compatible with the duality between color and kinematics. Adjoint-type double-copy construction at its most conservative seems to require the UV completion of DBIVA + pure Poincaré supergravity scattering amplitudes to a family of theories involving DBIVA-like particles coupled to Weyl-Einstein supergravity. We also point out an alternative solution to color-dual gauged pions that allows adjoint double-copy without a tower of higher derivative corrections but at the cost of exchange symmetry between scalars.

Novel features of attractors and transseries in nonconformal Bjorken flows

In this work we investigate the impact of conformal symmetry breaking on hydrodynamization of a far-from-equilibrium fluid. We find a new kind of transseries solutions for the nonconformal hydrodynamic equations of a longitudinal boost invariant expanding plasma. The new transseries solutions unveil a rich physical structure which arises due to the interplay of different physical scales. In the perfect fluid case the nonconformal speed of sound slows down the cooling of the temperature due to the emergence of logarithmic corrections that depends on the mass of the particle. Further, these terms propagate into the perturbative and nonperturbative sectors of the transseries once viscous corrections are included. The logarithmic mass contributions increase the asymptotic value of the Knudsen number while decreasing the damping rate of the transient nonhydrodynamic modes and thus, yielding to an extremely slow hydrodynamization process where flow lines merge to their forward attractor at extremely late times. The early time free streaming expansion is modified and receives logarithmic mass corrections induced by the shear-bulk couplings. The global flow structure and numerical analyses carried out in our work demonstrate the existence of local attraction at early and late times for the shear viscous tensor and bulk viscous pressure.
