KCl-UCl 3 molten salts investigated by Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD) simulations: A comparative study with three dispersion models

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD) simulations are performed on molten KCl-UCl 3 salt mixtures to determine energies, heat capacities, and densities. The density-dependent energy correction (DFT-dDsC), Grimme et al.’s DFT-D3, and Langreth & Lundqvist (vdW-cx) models are used for dispersion forces and combined with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) exchange-correlation potential with a Hubbard U param eter for the 5$f$ electrons of uranium. After validating predictions for the end-member systems to literature data, KCl-UCl 3 mixtures are studied at select temperatures. Densities and energies both deviate from ideal solution behavior, with the maximum deviation occurring around 36% UCl 3 for mixing energies and slightly lower (29% UCl 3 ) for densities. Compared to the NaCl-UCl 3 system, which was previously investigated using the same simulation methodologies, the KCl-UCl 3 density and mixing energy deviations from ideal solution behavior are larger by almost a factor of two. No deviation from ideal solution behavior for heat capacity was observed. The AIMD predictions for mixing energies and densities agree qualitatively with experimental data, though the spread in data obtained from the various dispersion force models utilized, measurements, and empirical estimates makes strong conclusions difficult. The dependence of thermodynamic and thermophysical properties on composition is correlated with the local chemistry of the solution phase, in particular, the tendency of UCl 3 to form network structures.

Neural network representation of electronic structure from ab initio molecular dynamics

Despite their rich information content, electronic structure data amassed at high volumes in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are generally under-utilized. Here we introduce a transferable high-fidelity neural network representation of such data in the form of tight-binding Hamiltonians for crystalline materials. This predictive representation of ab initio electronic structure, combined with machine-learning boosted molecular dynamics, enables efficient and accurate electronic evolution and sampling. When it is applied to a one-dimension charge-density wave material, carbyne, we are able to compute the spectral function and optical conductivity in the canonical ensemble. The spectral functions evaluated during soliton-antisoliton pair annihilation process reveal significant renormalization of low-energy edge modes due to retarded electron-lattice coupling beyond the Born–Oppenheimer limit. The availability of an efficient and reusable surrogate model for the electronic structure dynamical system will enable calculating many interesting physical properties, paving the way to previously inaccessible or challenging avenues in materials modeling.

Stoichiometric tuning of lattice flexibility and Na diffusion in NaAlSiO 4 : quasielastic neutron scattering experiment and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

We have performed quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments up to 1243 K and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to investigate the Na diffusion in various phases of NaAlSiO4 (NASO), namely, low-carnegieite (L-NASO; trigonal), high-carnegieite (H-NASO; cubic) and nepheline (N-NASO; hexagonal) phases. The QENS measurements reveal Na ions localized diffusion behavior in L-NASO and N-NASO, but long-range diffusion behavior in H-NASO. Furthermore, the AIMD simulation supplemented the QENS measurements and showed that excess Na ions in H-NASO enhance the host network flexibility and activate the AlO 4 /SiO 4 tetrahedra rotational modes. These framework modes enable the long-range diffusion of Na across a pathway of interstitial sites. The simulations also show Na diffusion in Na-deficient N-NASO through vacant Na sites along the hexagonal c-axis.

TeraChem: A graphical processing unit-accelerated electronic structure package for large-scale ab initio molecular dynamics

TeraChem was born in 2008 with the goal of providing fast on-the-fly electronic structure calculations to facilitate ab initio molecular dynamics studies of large biochemical systems such as photoswitchable proteins and multichromophoric antenna complexes. Originally developed for videogaming applications, graphics processing units (GPUs) offered a low-cost parallel computer architecture that became more accessible for general-purpose GPU computing with the release of CUDA in 2007. The evaluation of the electron repulsion integrals (ERIs) is a major bottleneck in electronic structure codes and provides an attractive target for acceleration on GPUs. Thus, highly efficient routines for evaluation of and contractions between the ERIs and density matrices were implemented in TeraChem. Here, electronic structure methods were developed and implemented to leverage these integral contraction routines, resulting in the first quantum chemistry package designed from the ground up for GPUs. This GPU acceleration makes TeraChem capable of performing large-scale ground and excited state calculations in the gas and condensed phase. Today, TeraChem's speed forms the basis for a suite of quantum chemistry applications, including optimization and dynamics of proteins, automated and interactive chemical discovery tools, and large-scale nonadiabatic dynamics simulations.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Study of Pd Nucleation on a γ-Al 2 O 3 Surface

We perform ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) free energy simulations to investigate the stability and dynamics of dispersed Pd atoms and subnanometer clusters on γ-Al 2 O 3 . We consider nucleation for varying Pd loadings on dry γ-Al 2 O 3 (100), dry γ-Al 2 O 3 (110) and wet γ-Al 2 O 3 (110) and examine temperature, entropy and water coverage effects on the stability and dynamics of Pd clusters. At low Pd loading (1.07 Pd atoms/nm 2 on the (100) and 0.75 Pd/nm 2 on the (110)), association of the Pd atoms is thermodynamically unfavorable on the dry surfaces and almost thermoneutral on the wet (110) owing to water blocking of the AlIII defect sites. In agreement with past studies, the Pd atoms are quite mobile but the diffusion free energy barriers do not increase with the water coverage, as previously suggested, but rather remain similar in magnitude owing to translational entropy at finite temperatures. At these Pd loadings, oxidized Pd(II) atoms on the wet (110) surface are dispersed and immobile. At higher Pd loading (1.12 and 1.5 Pd atoms/nm 2 ) on the (110) surface, Pd 3 and Pd 4 clusters are thermodynamically very stable and form fast. At the 1.12 Pd atoms/nm 2 loading, the formation of the Pd 3 cluster is two orders of magnitude slower when the surface is hydroxylated as the system becomes somewhat trapped before the dinuclear cluster Pd 2 collides with a Pd atom.

TeraChem: Accelerating electronic structure and ab initio molecular dynamics with graphical processing units

Developed over the past decade, TeraChem is an electronic structure and ab initio molecular dynamics software package designed from the ground up to leverage graphics processing units (GPUs) to perform large-scale ground and excited state quantum chemistry calculations in the gas and the condensed phase. TeraChem’s speed stems from the reformulation of conventional electronic structure theories in terms of a set of individually optimized high-performance electronic structure operations (e.g., Coulomb and exchange matrix builds, one- and two-particle density matrix builds) and rank-reduction techniques (e.g., tensor hypercontraction). Recent efforts have encapsulated these core operations and provided language-agnostic interfaces. Finally, this greatly increases the accessibility and flexibility of TeraChem as a platform to develop new electronic structure methods on GPUs and provides clear optimization targets for emerging parallel computing architectures.

Investigation of γ - ( U , Z r ) structural properties and its interfacial properties with liquid sodium using ab initio molecular dynamics

In this study, the elastic properties, structural parameters, sound velocity, and Debye temperature of γ–(U,Zr) were computed using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) at temperatures between 1000 K and 1400 K and for Zr content between 0 at. % and 100 at. %. UZr is used as a metallic fuel for Sodium Fast Reactors (SFRs). The study of the mechanical and thermal behavior of these alloys leads to a better data-informed fuel design. The bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio were calculated from the elastic constants and their dependence on Zr content and temperature was investigated, comparing the results with previous computational work and the available experimental data in the literature. Interfacial properties between UZr (up to 32 at. % which typically exists in nuclear fuel) and liquid sodium are also of interest due to the presence of a sodium bond between the fuel and the cladding in metallic nuclear fuel. The interfacial energy between γ–(U,Zr) and liquid sodium, the surface tension of liquid sodium, and the work of adhesion were computed at different temperatures and Zr concentrations. It was demonstrated that γ–(U,Zr) is completely wetted by liquid sodium at all the investigated temperatures and Zr concentrations. Finally, this work provides the basis for the determination of interfacial resistances in SFRs and their implementation into heat transfer fuel performance simulations, which will be the subject of future work.

Coordination Sphere of Lanthanide Aqua Ions Resolved with Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

To resolve the fleeting structures of lanthanide Ln 3+ aqua ions in solution, we (i) performed the first ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of the entire series of Ln 3+ aqua ions in explicit water solvent using pseudopotentials and basis sets recently optimized for lanthanides and (ii) measured the symmetry of the hydrating waters about Ln 3+ ions (Nd 3+ , Dy 3+ , Er 3+ , Lu 3+ ) for the first time with extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). EXAFS spectra were measured experimentally and generated from AIMD trajectories to directly compare simulation, which concurrently considers the electronic structure and the atomic dynamics in solution, with experiment. In this study, we performed a comprehensive evaluation of EXAFS multiple-scattering analysis (up to 6.5 Å) to measure Ln–O distances and angular correlations (i.e., symmetry) and elucidate the molecular geometry of the first hydration shell. This evaluation, in combination with symmetry-dependent L 3 - and L 1 -edge spectral analysis, shows that the AIMD simulations remarkably reproduces the experimental EXAFS data. The error in the predicted Ln–O distances is less than 0.07 Å for the later lanthanides, while we observed excellent agreement with predicted distances within experimental uncertainty for the early lanthanides. Our analysis revealed a dynamic, symmetrically disordered first coordination shell, which does not conform to a single molecular geometry for most lanthanides. This work sheds critical light on the highly elusive coordination geometry of the Ln 3+ aqua ions.

Understanding Hydrogenation Chemistry at MgB 2 Reactive Edges from Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics

Solid-state hydrogen storage materials often operate via transient, multistep chemical reactions at complex interfaces that are difficult to capture. Here, we use direct ab initio molecular dynamics simulations at accelerated temperatures and hydrogen pressures to probe the hydrogenation chemistry of the candidate material MgB 2 without a priori assumption of reaction pathways. Focusing on highly reactive ($10\overline{1}0$) edge planes where initial hydrogen attack is likely to occur, we track mechanistic steps toward the formation of hydrogen-saturated BH 4 – units and key chemical intermediates, involving H 2 dissociation, generation of functionalities and molecular complexes containing BH 2 and BH 3 motifs, and B–B bond breaking. Further, the genesis of higher-order boron clustering is also observed. Different charge states and chemical environments at the B-rich and Mg-rich edge planes are found to produce different chemical pathways and preferred speciation, with implications for overall hydrogenation kinetics. The reaction processes rely on B–H bond polarization and fluctuations between ionic and covalent character, which are critically enabled by the presence of Mg 2+ cations in the nearby interphase region. Our results provide guidance for devising kinetic improvement strategies for MgB 2 -based hydrogen storage materials, while also providing a template for exploring chemical pathways in other solid-state energy storage reactions.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Spectra for Characterization of Hydrated Al 2 O 3 Supported MoO x

The structure of supported MoO x /Al 2 O 3 catalysts is investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and density-functional theory (DFT). Phase diagrams were computed to understand the hydroxylation coverage as a function of the temperature, H 2 O partial pressure, and MoO x loading. We relate the shifts in experimental Raman vibrational frequencies under hydrated conditions to hydrogen bonding interactions and the MoO x anchoring location. We showcase that the use of AIMD as a benchmark for DFT can provide insight into how, under certain hydrated conditions, DFT excels as an inexpensive method for computing vibrational frequencies, while, under dehydrated conditions, it is susceptible to the largest errors. Additionally, to facilitate the analysis of the hydroxyl region of experimental infrared spectra, we compute the power spectra of individual hydroxyls and see a strong relationship between OH stretching frequencies and the surrounding coordination environment, which are also impacted by anchored MoO x . Here, we compare computational and experimental IR and Raman spectra of catalysts synthesized herein under the same conditions.

Pressure-induced phase transformations in Nb 2 O 5 from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

Here, the equations of state for the H-, L- and T-Nb 2 O 5 polymorphs were investigated with density functional theory. The shock Hugoniot curves were predicted from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations along 300–2500 K isotherms. Enthalpies derived from simulations at 300 K show that the H → L transition occurs at 6.2 GPa, in agreement with the measured value of ~5.9 GPa, and is more favorable than the H → T transition. Pressure-induced amorphization (PIA) of L-Nb 2 O 5 is in the range ~18-25 GPa, consistent with experiments reporting PIA above 21.4 GPa. The simulated PIA of T-Nb 2 O 5 between ~16 and 26 GPa reproduces PIA observed above 19.2 GPa.

High-temperature chromium diffusion in austenitic stainless steel: Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

Chromium self-diffusion through stainless steel (SS) matrix and along grain boundaries is an important mechanism controlling SS structural materials corrosion. For this work, Cr diffusion in austenitic SS was simulated using canonical ab initio molecular dynamics with realistic models of type-316 SS bulk, with and without Cr vacancies, and a low-energy Σ3 twin boundary typically observed at active corrosion sites. Cr self-diffusion coefficients at 750 and 850 °C calculated using Einstein’s diffusion equation are 4.2 × 10 –6 and 8.1 × 10 –6 Å 2 ps –1 in pristine bulk, 3.8 × 10 –3 and 5.5 × 10 –3 Å 2 ps –1 in bulk including Cr vacancies, and 9.5 × 10 –2 and 1.0 × 10 –1 Å 2 ps –1 at a Σ3[1 1 1]60° twin boundary.

Infrared Spectroscopy of Li + Solvation in EmimBF 4 and in Propylene Carbonate: Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics and Experiment

Infrared (IR) spectra of solutions of the lithium salt LiBF 4 in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EmimBF 4 ) and in the organic solvent propylene carbonate (PC) are studied via infrared spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The measurements show that the major effects of LiBF 4 in both solutions, compared to their neat counterparts, are the appearance of a new broad band in the 300-450 cm -1 frequency region and a broadening of the IR structure in the 900-1200 cm -1 region with the development of a new peak at 980 cm -1 . Computational analysis indicates that hindered translational motions of Li + in its solvation cage are mainly responsible for the former, while the latter is due to Li + -induced structural changes and accompanying vibrational frequency shifts of constituent ions and molecules of the solutions. In addition, molecular motions in these and lower frequency regions are generally correlated, disclosing the collective nature of the vibrational dynamics, which involve multiple ions/molecules. Herein, detailed analysis of these features via AIMD simulations of the spectrum and its components arising from auto- and cross-correlations of motions of constituent molecular species, combined with generalized normal modes of the solutions and normal modes of small Li + -containing clusters, is presented. Furthermore, other minor spectral changes caused by the lithium salt as well as the interaction-induced effect on IR spectra are also discussed.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Study of the Reduction of Acetone by the Hydrated Electron

We have investigated the reaction dynamics of the reduction of acetone by the solvated electron in water using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations at 298 and 373 K. The rate constants derived from the simulations are consistent with experimental observations that the reaction has a low activation energy. Detailed analyses carried out to shed light on the mechanism of the reaction show that solvent reorganization plays a key role as a reaction coordinate, as expected from the Marcus electron transfer theory. Furthermore, constrained density functional theory calculations indicate that the electronic coupling is large, placing the reaction in the adiabatic limit. Indeed, the activation energies and rate constants of the simulations are in accordance with the predictions of adiabatic Marcus theory.

An ab initio molecular dynamics exploration of associates in Ba-Bi liquid with strong ordering trends

Fictive associates are widely used to describe and model liquid phases with strong ordering trends. However, little evidence is known about the assumed associates in most cases. In the present work, an ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) study is employed to investigate the characters of the Ba-Bi liquid, in which associates have been assumed in existing thermodynamic modeling. It is found that in the Ba rich melt, the Bi atoms are almost completely surrounded by Ba atoms. The Bi-centered coordination polyhedrons are strongly associated to crystalline structures of Ba 5 Bi 3 and Ba 4 Bi 3 with a longer lifetime than other polyhedrons during the AIMD simulations. In addition, these Bi-centered polyhedrons in Ba rich melt connect with each other through vertex, edge, face, and/or bipyramid sharing to form medium range orders (MRO). In the Bi rich melt, the Ba-centered polyhedrons also form MROs, but they are both structurally and compositionally diverse with a shorter lifetime. These findings from AIMD study provide evidences that there exist a strongly ordering Ba 4 Bi 3 associate and a weakly ordering BaBi 3 associate in the Ba-Bi liquid. Here, the predicted enthalpy of mixing in the liquid agrees well with the results by the CALPHAD modeling in the literature.

Minimal Experimental Bias on the Hydrogen Bond Greatly Improves Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Water

Experiment Directed Simulations (EDS) is a method within a class of techniques seeking to improve molecular simulations by minimally biasing the system Hamiltonian to reproduce certain experimental observables. In a previous application of EDS to ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation based on electronic density functional theory (DFT), the AIMD simulations of water were biased to reproduce its experimentally derived solvation structure. In particular, by solely biasing the O-O pair correlation functions, other structural and dynamical properties that were not biased were improved. In this work, the hypothesis is tested that directly biasing the OH pair correlation (and hence the H-O∙∙∙H hydrogen bonding), will provide an even better improvement of DFT-based water properties in AIMD simulations. The logic behind this hypothesis is that for most electronic DFT descriptions of water the hydrogen bonding is known to be deficient due to anomalous charge transfer and over polarization in the DFT. Using recent advances to the EDS learning algorithm, we thus train a minimal bias on AIMD water that reproduces the O-H radial distribution function derived from the highly accurate MB-pol model of water. Finally, it is then confirmed that biasing the O-H pair correlation alone can lead to improved AIMD water properties, with structural and dynamical properties in even closer to experiment than the previous EDS-AIMD model.

Solvation at metal/water interfaces: An ab initio molecular dynamics benchmark of common computational approaches

Determining the influence of the solvent on electrochemical reaction energetics is a central challenge in our understanding of electrochemical interfaces. To date, it is unclear how well existing methods predict solvation energies at solid/liquid interfaces, since they cannot be assessed experimentally. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations present a physically highly accurate, but also a very costly approach. In this work, we employ extensive AIMD simulations to benchmark solvation at charge-neutral metal/water interfaces against commonly applied continuum solvent models. We consider a variety of adsorbates including *CO, *CHO, *COH, *OCCHO, *OH, and *OOH on Cu, Au, and Pt facets solvated by water. The surfaces and adsorbates considered are relevant, among other reactions, to electrochemical CO 2 reduction and the oxygen redox reactions. We determine directional hydrogen bonds and steric water competition to be critical for a correct description of solvation at the metal/water interfaces. As a consequence, we find that the most frequently applied continuum solvation methods, which do not yet capture these properties, do not presently provide more accurate energetics over simulations in vacuum. We find most of the computed benchmark solvation energies to linearly scale with hydrogen bonding or competitive water adsorption, which strongly differ across surfaces. Furthermore, we determine solvation energies of adsorbates to be non-transferable between metal surfaces, in contrast to standard practice.

Structural water in amorphous carbonate minerals: ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of X-ray pair distribution experiments

Water is known to play a controlling role in directing mineralization pathways and stabilizing metastable amorphous intermediates in hydrous carbonate mineral MCO 3 ·nH 2 O systems, where M 2+ is a divalent metal cation. Despite this recognition, the nature of the controls on crystallization is poorly understood, largely owing to the difficulty in characterizing the dynamically disordered structures of amorphous intermediates at the atomic scale. Here, we present a series of atomistic models, derived from ab initio molecular dynamics simulation, across a range of experimentally relevant cations (M = Ca, Mg, Sr) and hydration levels (0 ≤ n ≤ 2). Theoretical simulations of the dependence of the X-ray pair distribution function on the hydration level n show good agreement with available experimental data and thus provide further evidence for a lack of significant nanoscale structure in amorphous carbonates. Upon dehydration, the metal coordination number does not change significantly, but the relative extent of water dissociation increases, indicating that a thermodynamic driving force exists for water dissociation to accompany dehydration. Mg strongly favors monodentate conformation of carbonate ligands and shows a marked preference to exchange monodentate carbonate O for water O upon hydration, whereas Ca and Sr exchange mono- and bidentate carbonate ligands with comparable frequency. Finally, water forms an extensive hydrogen bond network among both water and carbonate groups that exhibits frequent proton transfers for all three cations considered suggesting that proton mobility is likely predominantly due to water dissociation and proton transfer reactions rather than molecular water diffusion.
