The NT digital micro tape recorder

The description of an audio recorder may at first glance seem out of place in a conference which has been dedicated to the discussion of the technology and requirements of mass data storage. However, there are several advanced features of the NT system which will be of interest to the mass storage technologist. Moreover, there are a sufficient number of data storage formats in current use which have evolved from their audio counterparts to recommend a close attention to major innovative introductions of audio storage formats. While the existing analog micro-cassette recorder has been (and will continue to be) adequate for various uses, there are significant benefits to be gained through the application of digital technology. The elimination of background tape hiss and the availability of two relatively wide band channels (for stereo recording), for example, would greatly enhance listenability and speech intelligibility. And with the use of advanced high-density recording and LSI circuit technologies, a digital micro recorder can realize unprecedented compactness with excellent energy efficiency. This is what was accomplished with the NT-1 Digital Micro Recorder. Its remarkably compact size contributes to its portability. The high-density NT format enables up to two hours of low-noise digital stereo recording on a cassette the size of a postage stamp. Its highly energy-efficient mechanical and electrical design results in low power consumption; the unit can be operated up to 7 hours (for continuous recording) on a single AA alkaline battery. Advanced user conveniences include a multifunction LCD readout. The unit's compactness and energy-efficiency, in particular, are attributes that cannot be matched by existing analog and digital audio formats. The size, performance, and features of the NT format are of benefit primarily to those who desire improved portability and audio quality in a personal memo product. The NT Recorder is the result of over ten years of intensive, multi-disciplinary research and development. What follows is a discussion of the technologies that have made the NT possible: (1) NT format mechanics, (2) NT media, (3) NT circuitry and board.

Extending Rucio with modern cloud storage support

Rucio is a software framework designed to facilitate scientific collaborations in efficiently organising, managing, and accessing extensive volumes of data through customizable policies. The framework enables data distribution across globally distributed locations and heterogeneous data centres, integrating various storage and network technologies into a unified federated entity. Rucio offers advanced features like distributed data recovery and adaptive replication, and it exhibits high scalability, modularity, and extensibility. Originally developed to meet the requirements of the high-energy physics experiment ATLAS, Rucio has been continuously expanded to support LHC experiments and diverse scientific communities. Recent R&D projects within these communities have evaluated the integration of both private and commercially-provided cloud storage systems, leading to the development of additional functionalities for seamless integration within Rucio. Furthermore, the underlying systems, FTS and GFAL/Davix, have been extended to cater to specific use cases. This contribution focuses on the technical aspects of this work, particularly the challenges encountered in building a generic interface for self-hosted cloud storage, such as MinIO or CEPH S3 Gateway, and established providers like Google Cloud Storage and Amazon Simple Storage Service. Additionally, the integration of decentralised clouds like SEAL is explored. Key aspects, including authentication and authorisation, direct and remote access, throughput and cost estimation, are highlighted, along with shared experiences in daily operations.

Preparing MPICH for exascale

The advent of exascale supercomputers heralds a new era of scientific discovery, yet it introduces significant architectural challenges that must be overcome for MPI applications to fully exploit its potential. Among these challenges is the adoption of heterogeneous architectures, particularly the integration of GPUs to accelerate computation. Additionally, the complexity of multithreaded programming models has also become a critical factor in achieving performance at scale. The efficient utilization of hardware acceleration for communication, provided by modern NICs, is also essential for achieving low latency and high throughput communication in such complex systems. In response to these challenges, the MPICH library, a high-performance and widely used Message Passing Interface (MPI) implementation, has undergone significant enhancements. Here, this paper presents four major contributions that prepare MPICH for the exascale transition. First, we describe a lightweight communication stack that leverages the advanced features of modern NICs to maximize hardware acceleration. Second, our work showcases a highly scalable multithreaded communication model that addresses the complexities of concurrent environments. Third, we introduce GPU-aware communication capabilities that optimize data movement in GPU-integrated systems. Finally, we present a new datatype engine aimed at accelerating the use of MPI derived datatypes on GPUs. These improvements in the MPICH library not only address the immediate needs of exascale computing architectures but also set a foundation for exploiting future innovations in high-performance computing. By embracing these new designs and approaches, MPICH-derived libraries from HPE Cray and Intel were able to achieve real exascale performance on OLCF Frontier and ALCF Aurora respectively.

Machine Learning Analysis of Temperature-Strain Relationships for Structural Health Monitoring of Pipes: Self-powered wireless sensor system for health monitoring of liquid-sodium cooled fast reactors

This report presents machine learning (ML) analysis of temperature-strain relationships for structural health monitoring of nuclear reactor stainless steel (SS) pipes with the strain gauge sensor directly printed on the pipe with a 3D conformal aerosol jet printer. We investigate correlations for two sensor pairs installed on the same SS304 pipe: commercial K-type thermocouple with a printed gold strain gauge (TC3-SG3), and commercial K-type thermocouple with commercial Kyowa strain gauge (TC0-SG0). The temperature ranges for the sensor pairs TC0-SG0 and TC3-SG3 are 20.00°C to 266.37°C and 39.95°C to 219.28°C respectively. ML algorithms in this study include Linear Regression (baseline method), Ridge Regression, Lasso Regression, and Gradient Boosting. Performance evaluation metrics include Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Square Error (MSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), R 2 Score, and Explained Variance. Using advanced feature engineering techniques, we extracted 27 temperature-based features and 30 strategic inclusion features. The best performance was obtained with the Gradient Boosting method, which achieves prediction accuracy of R 2 = 0.9999 and RMSE = 7.69 μStrain for TC0-SG0, and R 2 = 0.9998 and RMSE = 18.03 μStrain for TC3-SG3. While the temperature-strain correlations are weaker for the gauge directly printed on the pipe than for the commercial strain gauge, deployment-ready performance exceeding industry standards is achieved for both sensor pairs.

Energy efficient engine. Low pressure turbine test hardware detailed design report

The low pressure turbine for the energy efficient engine is a five-stage configuration with moderate aerodynamic loading incorporating advanced features of decambered airfoils and extended blade overlaps at platforms and shrouds. Mechanical integrity of 18,000 hours on flowpath components and 36,000 hours on all other components is achieved along with no aeromechanical instabilities within the steady-state operating range. Selection of a large number (156) of stage 4 blades, together with an increased stage 4 vane-to-blade gap, assists in achieving FAR 36 acoustic goals. Active clearance control (ACC) of gaps at blade tips and interstage seals is achieved by fan air cooling judiciously applied at responsive locations on the casing. This ACC system is a major improvement in preventing deterioration of the 0.0381 cm (0.015 in.) clearances required to meet the integrated-core/low-spool turbine efficiency goal of 91.1% and the light propulsion system efficiency goal of 91.7%.

SSME structural dynamic model development, phase 2

A set of test correlated mathematical models of the SSME High Pressure Oxygen Turbopump (HPOTP) housing and rotor assembly was produced. New analysis methods within the EISI/EAL and SPAR systems were investigated and runstreams for future use were developed. The LOX pump models have undergone extensive modification since the first phase of this effort was completed. The rotor assembly from the original model was abandoned and a new, more detailed model constructed. A description of the new rotor math model is presented. Also, the pump housing model was continually modified as additional test data have become available. This model is documented along with measured test results. Many of the more advanced features of the EAL/SPAR finite element analysis system were exercised. These included the cyclic symmetry option, the macro-element procedures, and the fluid analysis capability. In addition, a new tool was developed that allows an automated analysis of a disjoint structure in terms of its component modes. A complete description of the implementation of the Craig-Bampton method is given along with two worked examples.

The implementation and use of Ada on distributed systems with high reliability requirements

The general inadequacy of Ada for programming systems that must survive processor loss was shown. A solution to the problem was proposed in which there are no syntatic changes to Ada. The approach was evaluated using a full-scale, realistic application. The application used was the Advanced Transport Operating System (ATOPS), an experimental computer control system developed for a modified Boeing 737 aircraft. The ATOPS system is a full authority, real-time avionics system providing a large variety of advanced features. Methods of building fault tolerance into concurrent systems were explored. A set of criteria by which the proposed method will be judged was examined. Extensive interaction with personnel from Computer Sciences Corporation and NASA Langley occurred to determine the requirements of the ATOPS software. Backward error recovery in concurrent systems was assessed.

Adiabatic diesel engine component development: Reference engine for on-highway applications

The main objectives were to select an advanced low heat rejection diesel reference engine (ADRE) and to carry out systems analysis and design. The ADRE concept selection consisted of: (1) rated point performance optimization; (2) study of various exhaust energy recovery scenarios; (3) components, systems and engine configuration studies; and (4) life cycle cost estimates of the ADRE economic worth. The resulting ADRE design proposed a reciprocator with many advanced features for the 1995 technology demonstration time frame. These included ceramic air gap insulated hot section structural components, high temperature tribology treatments, nonmechanical (camless) valve actuation systems, and elimination of the cylinder head gasket. ADRE system analysis and design resulted in more definition of the engine systems. These systems include: (1) electro-hydraulic valve actuation, (2) electronic common rail injection system; (3) engine electronic control; (4) power transfer for accessory drives and exhaust energy recovery systems; and (5) truck installation. Tribology and performance assessments were also carried out. Finite element and probability of survival analyses were undertaken for the ceramic low heat rejection component.
