High performance ammonium nitrate propellant

A high performance propellant having greatly reduced hydrogen chloride emission is presented. It is comprised of: (1) a minor amount of hydrocarbon binder (10-15%), (2) at least 85% solids including ammonium nitrate as the primary oxidizer (about 40% to 70%), (3) a significant amount (5-25%) powdered metal fuel, such as aluminum, (4) a small amount (5-25%) of ammonium perchlorate as a supplementary oxidizer, and (5) optionally a small amount (0-20%) of a nitramine.

Near-infrared detection of ammonium minerals at Ivanhoe Hot Springs, Nevada

Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) data were collected over the fossil hot spring deposit at Ivanhoe, Nevada in order to determine the surface distribution of NH4-bearing minerals. Laboratory studies show that NH4-bearing minerals have characteristic absorption features in the near-infrared (NIR). Ammonium-bearing feldspars and alunites were observed at the surface of Ivanhoe using a hand-held radiometer. However, first look analysis of the AIS images showed that the line was about 500 m east of its intended mark, and the vegetation cover was sufficiently dense to inhibit preliminary attempts at making relative reflectance images for detection of ammonium minerals.

Complex Refractive Index of Ammonium Nitrate in the 2-20 micron Spectral Range

Using high resolution Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) absorbance/transmittance spectral data for ammonium sulfate (AMS), calcium carbonate (CAC) and ammonium nitrate (AMN), comparisons were made with previously published complex refractive indices data for AMS and CAC to infer experimental parameters to determine the imaginary refractive index for AMN in the infrared wavelength range from 2 to 20 microns. Kramers-Kronig mathematical relations were applied to calculate the real refractive index for the three compositions. Excellent agreement for AMS and CAC with the published values was found, validating the complex refractive indices obtained for AMN. Backscatter calculations using a lognormal size distribution for AMS, AMN, and CAC aerosols were performed to show differences in their backscattered spectra.

Organic Modification of a Layered Silicate by Co-Ion Exchange of an Alkyl Ammonium and a Mono-Protonated Diamine

Co-Ion exchange of the interlayer cations of a layered silicate with a mono-protonated aromatic diamine and an alkyl ammonium ion into the silicate galleries. The presence of the alkyl ammonium ion provides low oligomer melt viscosity during processing. The presence of the diamine allows chemical reaction between the silicate surface modification and the monomers. This reaction strengthens the polymer silicate interface, and ensures irreversible separation of the individual silicate layers. Improved polymer thermal oxidative stability and mechanical properties are obtained.

The Spectrum of Jupiter's Great Red Spot: The Case for Ammonium Hydrosulfide (NH4SH)

Here we present new ultraviolet-visible spectra of irradiated ammonium hydrosulfide (NH4SH), a reported Jovian atmospheric cloud component, for a range of temperatures and radiation doses and make assignments to the spectral features. We show that the combination of radiolysis and thermal annealing of NH4SH causes the originally featureless ultraviolet-visible reflectance spectrum to evolve into one that absorbs in the ultraviolet-visible region. Furthermore, we find that our laboratory spectra resemble HST (Hubble Space Telescope) spectra below 500 nanometers, suggesting that the more stable reaction products of NH4SH radiolysis are likely an important component of the Great Red Spot.

Determination of ammonium ion by fluorometry or spectrophotometry after on-line derivatization with o-phthalaldehyde

A fast, sensitive, simple, and highly reproducible method for routine assay of ammonium ion (NH4+) was developed by using HPLC equipment. The method is based on the reaction of NH4+ with o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) in the presence of 2-mercaptoethanol. After an on-line derivatization, the resulting NH4(+)-OPA product was quantified by using fluorometric or spectrophotometric detection. For fluorometric detection, the excitation and emission wavelengths were 410 and 470 nm, respectively. The spectrophotometric detection was made by measuring absorbance at 410 nm. Results on the effects of OPA-reagent composition and pH, reaction temperature, sample matrix, and linearity of the assay are presented. Even though it took about 2 min from the time of sample injection to the appearance of sample peak, sample injections could be overlapped at an interval of about 1 min. Thus, the actual time needed for analysis was about 1 min per assay. The method can be used in a fully automated mode by using an autosampler injector.

Dry matter and nitrogen accumulation are not affected by superoptimal concentration of ammonium in flowing solution culture with pH control

While it is known that superoptimal concentrations of the nitrate (NO3-) ion in solution culture do not increase NO3- uptake or dry matter accumulation, the same is not known for the ammonium (NH4+) ion. An experiment was conducted utilizing flowing solution culture with pH control to investigate the influence of superoptimal NH4+ concentrations on dry matter, nitrogen (N), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) accumulation by nonnodulated soybean plants. Increasing the NH4+ concentration in solution from 1 to 10 mM did not affect dry matter or N accumulation. Accumulations of K, Ca, and Mg were slightly decreased with increased NH4+ concentration. The NH4+ uptake system, which is saturated at less than 1mM NH4+, is able to regulate uptake of NH4+ at concentrations as high as 10 mM.
